"I want it to be a surprise to the crew," Uma told Harry. It was night and they were lying in Uma's bed, and she was happy. Whatever concern she had for her mother or anything, it was gone the moment Ben mentioned their ship. Uma loved it and it was one of her greatest pride to have win it. If Harry had to thank his father for anything, he would surely appreciate having made that career. Uma's eyes lit up so brightly that Harry couldn't help but feel his heart pound with excitement. He himself had called Lost Revenge home, a word that was as unknown on the Island as the word love. Yes, you could have a house, but a home was something different.
"I told them they should wear their best clothes tomorrow, but Gil started asking and I had to hit him."
"Harry!"
"It wasn't that hard!" Hook's son defended himself. "It hurt me more than him."
Uma snorted. She pulled Harry closer to her and they were lost for the rest of the night between rough kisses. She loved this. What fate would have awaited them if they were on the Island? Uma really didn't want to think about that. She didn't want to think at all, Harry was a dedicated lover, and he knew Uma so well...
Uma opened her eyes and, in that instant, she knew she had to get to the bathroom. She got up, almost tripping over the covers, and the next thing she knew she was vomiting into the toilet. It was a ghastly feeling that reminded her of the times she had been intoxicated on the Island. Harry was beside her in an instant, although Uma had clearly closed the door telling him not to enter. However, when he ran a gentle hand down her back, Uma thanked him for his company.
"Are you okay, love?"
Uma lowered the toilet lever and hurried to brush her teeth, desperate to get the taste out of her mouth.
"I'm fine," she told Harry. She was shaking, and he held her when her legs gave out. This always happened to her when she dreamed of Ursula's potions and she was pretty sure that she had been having a nightmare about it. Couldn´t she have a peaceful night? She did not ask for beautiful dreams, only to rest.
"Uma, are you crying?" Harry asked, surprised. She hadn't cried in the presence of anyone since the incident with Mal. Uma touched her face and was surprised when her hand got wet. Somehow, that made her cry harder. She instinctively looked for a way to hide. Scared, she thought that she didn't even know why she was crying. What was happening to her?
"Okay, captain. Come here. There's no need to hide, it's just me."
"I can't be weak, Harry. I can´t."
"You are scared, Uma. It's okay. We are no longer on the island. We will be fine."
Uma gradually calmed down, snuggled into Harry's arms. Tomorrow she would see again her beloved ship, she reminded herself, and the thought of the memory of the wind on her face as she climbed the sails' ropes reassured her enough to be able to sleep again.
Everyone at the table was dressed in their best clothes, the best hats, the best kerchiefs. Hell, they had cleaned their boots. She was wearing the turquoise dress that she had worn the day the barrier fell, but she had still told the crew nothing about the ship.
Breakfast that day was great, of course. The food at Auradon was always delicious, but Uma had no appetite, perhaps for the first time in her life. In fact, she could tell that the smell of her strawberry pie was too perfumed, and she was feeling a tremendous urge to vomit. It didn't help that her heart was beating as if she had just run a few laps around the Island. Maybe she was sick.
She just couldn't help it. Desiree slammed one of her notebooks shut and the small draft of air was enough to send the scent of strawberries straight to Uma. She felt nausea attack her again, she covered her mouth with the palm of her hand and ran like the devil's soul out of the cafeteria and straight to the nearest bathroom. She barely held out long enough to get there. She heard Harry and Desiree arguing outside.
"You can't go in there Harry, it's the girls' room!"
"I don't give a damn. I need to go in with her."
"Seriously, Harry. Don't worry, Bonny and I have this."
Seconds later, the door opened and her two pirates entered, Desiree locked the door with the latch to prevent Harry from entering (although Uma knew he would probably only break it if they didn't get out in a minute or two) and they reached her.
"Are you okay, Captain?" Bonny asked.
Uma rinsed her mouth with water. Maybe she should go back to her room.
"I think I'm sick, that's all. God, I'm starving. Let's go back."
Desiree and Bonny looked at each other as if they were thinking something at the same time.
"I think you should go to the infirmary," Desiree said. "Not that I want to scare you, but I really think you should."
Uma crossed her arms.
"It's just a stomach flu, Desiree. I used to work double shifts even when I got sick, remember? "
"Yes, I know. It's just that… you look tired, you just threw up, but you're hungry and… well, you're sleeping with Harry, right? "
"And? What does that have to do with it? "Asked Uma, exasperated. In truth, she appreciated the gesture of her girls, but she took care of them, not the other way.
Bonny slammed the palm of her good hand to her forehead and Desiree groaned.
"Really, Uma? Desiree is trying to tell you that you might be pregnant!" Bonny told her, completely incredulous that Uma hadn't gotten it.
It was like a blow to Uma. At that moment, the lock broke, just as she had thought, and a very angry Harry burst into the girls' bathroom. He was about to complain to Desiree for putting the lock when he saw Uma and noticed that her expression was between bewildered and incredulous.
"Uma, you're scaring me." Harry said, taking her by the shoulders. "This is all. I'll take you to the infirmary, although I don't know where it is. "
She did not say anything. For the first time, she really didn't know what to say. She let Harry guide her away from the bathroom.
"I know where it is, Harry. Let´s go," Bonny offered.
"Yeah, I'm going too," Desiree said nervously.
Uma still didn't say anything.
"Hey!" Gil yelled, standing in the cafeteria door with Jonas and Gonzo to one side. "What happened? Are you okay, Uma? "
"I'm taking her to the infirmary," Harry growled.
"She's in shock," Bonny whispered to Desiree, to which the other girl nodded.
"Wait, we'll go with you," Gonzo announced, and like that they all headed for the infirmary, with a strangely silent Uma.
Bonny greeted the nurse, the woman who had given her some medications for her wrist swelling, and then tried to decide how she could tell her what she and Desiree suspected without the rest of the crew noticing. So, when the woman asked Uma directly what symptoms she had, Bonny was relieved that she didn't have to be the one to explain it.
"Well, I'm tired, hungry and I have vomited twice between yesterday and today," Uma replied, but her voice sounded like she wasn't paying attention to what she was saying.
Twice. Well, Bonny was pretty sure what was going on. The nurse asked everyone to wait outside while she gave Uma some tests and questions, and between Gonzo, Gil and Jonas they forced Harry to go with them. However, they all clung to the door to try to hear what was happening. It wasn't like they could hear much, just something about a test Uma needed to get done and when her last period had been. At that moment, Bonny and Desiree defended Uma's privacy and a silent but rude fight began in the hallway. Between hitting, hair pulling, and hostile threats, Desiree and Bonny managed to keep the boys away. Harry even tried to give them his best lost puppy look, which was difficult because the boy had that crazy air that made him dangerous.
By the time Uma walked out the door, the crew had already had a big fight, a dice bet, and Harry was throwing a tantrum. But everyone calmed down when the Pirate Queen turned her attention to them, haughty as ever. Bonny tried to read her expression, but Uma had put on that impenetrable mask that did not let her feelings pass.
"Well?" Harry asked, eager to know what was wrong with her. "What is wrong, lass?"
Uma looked at them slowly, evaluating them, and let out a deep sigh. She was deciding whether it was right to trust them, whether she should put herself in a vulnerable position or protect herself. Desiree knew it before she said it because, even though she wasn't smiling, there was that something in her gaze that used to appear every time she took care of them, protected them or helped them. What all the children on the island had eagerly sought in her, what had made her powerful on the Island, what had won her so many followers because Uma was strong, tough, but also cared for her people, defying standards of the island.
Maternal instinct.
When she spoke, the tone of her voice had taken on the force of a hurricane.
"I'm pregnant."
Many things happened at the same time.
Bonny and Desiree hugged each other, letting out squeals of joy. Harry was only able to stammer "what?" before Gil, Jonas, and Gonzo had to slap him to get him to react. Uma gave Harry an incredulous look and Desiree noticed the hint of a smile on her lips.
Bonny took it upon herself to make a hyperventilating Harry lean against the wall while Gonzo and Jonas congratulated Uma. Gil tried to hug her, and she punched him out of habit, though she immediately began to apologize to him. Actually, it hadn't been on purpose, it was just her old habits from the Isle. She was almost on the defensive. But she let Gil give her that hug before going to Harry.
"It's time for our retreat," Desiree whispered to Jonas.
"Uh, uh ... we'll see you later, okay?" Gonzo said, a little uncomfortable. Uma nodded towards them.
They waited until the rest of the crew left to talk. Uma waited patiently for Harry to say something to her. Whatever. She wasn't going to deny that she was just as bewildered as he was. It seemed like a kind of unreal dream because everything was happening too fast, too far from reality.
"Are you okay?" Was the first thing he asked her, softening his expression.
Uma nodded, running her fingers through his hair. Harry disconnected from the world for a second, long enough to process what was happening. He then looked at her.
"We have never talked about children."
"No," Uma acknowledged. "While we were on the island it was not a real possibility. I would not lead an innocent person to live the same life as me."
"And now?" Harry asked, running his hand around her waist to bring her closer to him. The tension in Uma's body went away.
"It's ours and I'm going to protect it," she said simply, a hurricane building in her gaze. "I'm not going to let this baby feel what I felt. And you are better than Captain Hook, you will not be like him."
That was all Harry needed to hear. The confidence in her words, the fierce determination. And he knew what she meant. That baby was never going to feel the rejection they had felt from their parents. It belonged to Harry and Uma, and they were both going to take care of it. In that instant, hundreds of things changed to never be the same again. Harry had never considered himself apt to take care of others, or affectionate, although his exception was always Uma, but in that instant his world was rearranged and Harry knew that he loved that baby, for the simple fact of being a part of Uma and a part of him. There was not even room for doubt. He did not allow himself to think about the fear at the real prospect of having a child.
"Harry."
He looked at Uma.
"You love me, right?" She was trying to make sure that nothing had changed, that he would not walk away from her. Harry couldn't blame her. Uma knew that she was his life, but she also reminded every girl on the Island that had become pregnant. She remembered welcoming a couple of girls to the Chip Shoppe and giving them a plate of hot food because they had been thrown out of their houses, children who had no father because who would want to take over another mouth to feed on the Isle of the Lost?
He noticed how Uma's hand fell imperceptibly on her belly, a possessive and protective gesture.
"I would die for you, captain."
He took her by the waist and gently pushed her against the wall. Harry kissed her neck, her ear, her lips, trying to tell her that nothing would change. She was still his goddess, his Pirate Queen, the strong Uma who fought tooth and nail to defend what belonged to her. Harry heard her moan and felt the heat run through his body again. How did she do it? She could make his need to take her appear in a second, with just a glance or a flick from her lips.
"Maybe we should go back, we haven't told them about the Lost Revenge," Uma suggested breathlessly. Harry also loved seeing the effect he had on her. "Harry, what is that on your arm?"
Harry looked in the direction Uma was pointing.
"Ah, it must have been the tourney. Don't worry, let's go. "
Well, he wasn't going to tell her that Gil had punched him to keep him from slamming the infirmary door, right?
"I'm sure there's no need to say this is between us, right?" Uma asked the crew once they were all gathered for the next free period. They all nodded, understanding. "Okay, there is other news and this is mainly why Harry asked you to wear your best clothes today. Ben complied. At this very moment, the Lost Revenge must be arriving at the port."
"Oh yeah! Shit, our ship!" Desiree yelled, with Bonny taking second place, which attracted stares. Uma saw Evie raise an eyebrow from across the hall.
Choruses of "with a demon, yeah" and "Fuck this, Davy Jones!" (From Gonzo, who loved to curse famous pirates, including Harry's father) were yelled by the crew. Uma couldn't help but smile. She loved her the loud pirates.
"Now remember, we have to be the best crew, no matter what. We will have a party on the ship at night, and I hope everyone performs up to the task, okay?"
"Aye, aye, captain!"
"And one more little thing." She turned to Harry, who seemed to be in Uma's paradise again. "What is my name?"
Harry knelt down, took Uma's hand and kissed it reverently. And he said her name, in that tone that left no doubt that he would give his life for her in an instant. "Uma."
Uma turned to the others.
"What is my name?"
"Uma!" Everyone chanted, even Gil.
And suddenly any worries she might have had were gone. She surely would have to be terrified at the prospect of having a child. She hadn't even been raised by a caring mother. But she had her crew, Harry and Gil. And the only thing she could feel was the need to protect the little thing that was growing in her belly.
