Is it Swagger or Sea Legs?...
Inko Midoryia learned two things about her son as she tried to shift him from formula to solid foods…
One: Izuku did not like leafy green vegetables of any kind, even when mixed together with other foods.
Two: Izuku really loved the stuffed toy he'd gotten from her parents shortly before the two had passed from flu related pneumonia a few months after he'd been born.
"No!" Her usually agreeable son shouted as he slapped a spoonful of pureed spinach and peas out of her hand.
He really didn't like leafy greens.
"Okay." Inko said patiently. "How about some carrots instead?" she asked him.
Izuku paused in adorable thought before nodding. "Okay." He said with a smile.
Inko sighed in relief. Thankfully her son wasn't fussy about potty training.
What Inko didn't know was that sweet Izuku's stuffed toy sometimes came to life at night and floated around the boy causing him to giggle.
"Jeep! Jeep!" The toy said sometimes as it floated around and played with the young boy.
Jeep wasn't exactly from this dimension and was checking in on the latest descendant of an old friend and protector of his.
So many generations had passed though that most of the family history was lost to time and the chaos that was the early years of life with Quirks in the world.
Jeep knew that this child was what could be considered a throwback to an earlier time so he decided to reawaken some old family traits that would activate when certain conditions were met a few years down the line.
He'd keep an eye on this one every now and then in the meantime.
He was family after all.
You know how the story goes…
Quirkless and bullied boy meets his idol and ends up impressing him by doing something equally heroic and reckless.
Said idol offers to train the boy as a new shining Beacon Of Justice…. Blah blah blah…
Here's where we come to another point of divergence….
"Okay." All Might said with a sigh as he looked at the overworked boy in front of him. "We're taking a rest day."
Izuku nodded, still reeling from his over-training and the stern speech he'd gotten from the Number One Hero about it.
"Have I ever told you about the smoothie place I go to?" All Might asked Izuku.
"Um… No?" Izuku said. "It has never really come up."
All Might shook his head. "With a digestive tract as messed up as mine, easy to digest food is a must. In fact this place has the closest thing to a chocolate milkshake that I can eat without feeling ill."
"Wow." Izuku said. "You know, if I wasn't so tired I'd probably be hungry right now."
"We'll talk some more about why you're over-training on the way there." All Might said as he fished the keys for his beat up truck out of his pocket. "I'll treat. This time."
Izuku nodded. He should have realized that this particular conversation wasn't over yet.
The Witches Cauldron… full of potions, lotions and herbal remedies.
Now with Soft Serve everything!
All Might sighed as Izuku began looking at every page of the menu and started muttering about the possible ingredient combinations.
To be fair to the kid, the menu was about the same size one would find at a Cheesecake Factory.
While the kid was stuck in a muttering tangent, All Might ordered his regular and the 'athletic shake of the day' for the kid.
Izuku did quit muttering when the large green monstrosity of a shake was set in front of him.
"Whoa." Izuku said as looked at the bright green concoction. "What's in it?"
"I dunno." All Might said with a shrug as he sipped his own shake. "You don't have any food allergies do you?"
"Nope." Izuku said. "My mom says I'm a picky eater though. I stick with most of the diet plan you gave me but I like what I like."
"Well this is supposed to be mint chocolate chip flavored." All Might said as he gestured at the green shake. "Go to town kid. You need the calories."
Izuku took a straw collapsing sip from the shake and frowned. "It's a little thick." He said before grabbing a second straw and putting a straw in each side of his mouth and began drinking the shake.
All Might was surprised at how quickly the kid managed to kill the shake in front of him. "How are you not getting brain freeze?"
"I dunno." Izuku said with a shrug. "This is really good though." He said before finishing the drink. "Hey, is it hot in here?" He asked as he started to sweat. "I feel funny."
"Uh… oh boy." All Might said as the kid seemed to ripple in front of him.
Izuku's chin suddenly became a little more defined and formed a cleft as he gripped the table with a death grip. His body seemed to gain in mass but his forearms were where the most development seemed to take place. Both forearms seemed to swell as though balloons had been inserted under his skin.
Izuku snapped the table in half and muttered "Well blow me down" before passing out.
"Well… that was different." All Might said as he sipped his drink. He shook his head and quickly grabbed the boy's phone and used Izuku's finger to unlock it before calling his mother.
"No food allergies my ass." All Might sighed as he signaled for the check and an ambulance.
A Hospital Near UA….
"It's not a Quirk." Recovery Girl said as she double checked the blood tests that had been run on the sleeping child.
"Then what is it?" All Might asked. "He drank a smoothie and this happened."
"What was in it?" Principal Nedzu asked. "Never mind I'm looking it up now." He said as he started playing with All Might's smartphone.
"What's wrong with my son and why is Recovery Girl here?" Inko Midorya asked the group of heroes.
"It's complicated." All Might said as Izuku began to stir.
"What hit me?" Izuku asked with a slightly raspy voice as he grabbed and bent the railing of the hospital bed. "I feel funny."
"You look it too kid." All Might said with a snort.
"He has my grandfather's chin." Inko said softly. "He didn't have that this morning."
"Has Izuku ever eaten spinach?" Principal Nedzu asked as he finally found what he was looking for on All Might's phone.
"He's always hated leafy greens. It took years to get him to eat Kombu." Inko said. "Why?"
"How far back did your family change their name from Oyl?" Nedzu asked.
"Do what now?" Inko asked.
"I think I've got an idea as to what's happened to your son." Nedzu said before he began laughing maniacally.
A nurse quickly poked her head into the room. "This is a hospital. If you want to cackle like that do it on the fifth floor!" She scolded.
"To the fifth floor!" Nedzu commanded.
"That's the psychiatric ward sir." Recovery Girl told him.
"Phooey." Nedzu said. "Anyways, it's not a Quirk. It's something else."
"What is it?" Inko asked.
"Living history." Nedzu said with a grin.
A long explanation later…
Back at UA campus….
"So we're descended from this Popeye Oyl?" Inko asked Nedzu. "How do you even know all of this?"
"I am a Quirked animal among a world of Quirked humans." Nedzu said. "I've dug deep into history to see if there are any records of other Quirked animals. I went back to the Pre-Quirk Era."
"Jeep." Izuku said as he realized what he was talking about. "My stuffed animal that came to life when mom wasn't around."
"Exactly. He's not really an animal or Quirked." Nedzu said. "That led me to the Oyl family and the man who married into it."
"Honey, I just thought you were lonely. I'm Sorry." Inko apologized.
"So what do we do now?" Izuku asked.
"We see where you're at, then we feed you some spinach." Nedzu said. "Popeye and his abilities were things of myth back in his day since they were so unbelievable. I want to see them for myself."
Izuku nodded. "What about school?"
"We'll arrange something." Nedzu promised. "Now, we need to see exactly what all you can do."
Izuku sighed.
He had a feeling this was going to take a while.
"Do I really have to walk like this?" Izuku asked as he held his arms out in an odd position.
"If you don't want to tear your shirt off yes." Nedzu said. "We're working on getting you more durable daily wear but if your arms brush against your clothes the wrong way they'll tear with your strength as it is now."
Izuku nodded. This was his life now. Everything was practically putty in his hands. Or splinters.
Is this how All Might felt when transformed? This kinda sucked.
"So now we move onto the other part." Nedzu said.
"Do I have too?" Izuku asked as he looked at the canned vegetable and poked it with a chopstick.
"You only had a handful back at the smoothie place. Hold your nose and just eat it." Nedzu ordered.
Izuku nodded, pinched his nose and started chewing.
It didn't help much.
After the basic stress tests were over.
"We're gonna need better equipment." Power Loader groaned as he did a mental tally of all the blown hydraulics.. "Man I still have to finish this year's batch of test robots too."
"Eh. He did all right." All Might said with a shrug.
"He tied the barrel of a tank into a knot." Aizawa muttered. "By eating spinach."
"He also punched two rounds from said tank into the ground." Midnight said with a half mad giggle. "Though what's with the squinting?"
"I think his eyes have been enhanced some as well. Good for sailing at night I suppose." Nedzu said. "He may need some sunglasses or tinted goggles."
"And this isn't a Quirk?" Present Mic asked. "Seriously?"
"Yep." All Might said. "Reminds me of when I was younger to be honest."
"You could never scat like that." Nedzu said as they listened to the impromptu Jazz Scatting the boy was doing as he started to put all the pieces of things he'd broken into neat piles.
"Well at least he's tidy." Power Loader said. "Any chance I can get him to help with cleaning up after the exams?"
"You could always ask." Nedzu said with a grin.
UA's Exam, testing Site B….
Izuku sighed as he adjusted his goggles. The clothing that had been woven for him by Best Jeanist was starting to wear out.
Crashing through several three pointers like they were made of tissue paper could do that after all. Even durable variants of today's sailcloth had limits.
"Yeesh."Izuku said as a giant robot burst from the center of this section of the testing city-space. "So this is the Zero Pointer."
There was an odd chorus of screams coming from some rubble about half a block from the giant robot's path.
It's head turned and its path began to change direction.
"Well there goes me not using my trump card." Izuku muttered as he pulled out a can of spinach. He squeezed the bottom half causing it to burst out of the top and he quickly chewed and swallowed the whole thing.
Izuku felt the tell tale surge of strength and he quickly ran up the body of the Zero Pointer and he literally knocked it's head off, managing to keep the bot's head from hitting anyone in the process.
The rest of the robot powered down, frozen in its current position.
"Nice." Izuku said as his shirt finally gave up and fell off him. "Eh." He said with a shrug before heading to where he'd heard the screams coming from.
He spotted some legs under building debris and called out to see if they were conscious.
They were pinned but not pressed so shifting things should be okay.
He lifted a large part of a wall and saw a girl with little blushes on her cheeks and another that was just so… pretty.
"'Sup" Izuku said to the girl with the jacks coming from her ears.
It was going to be an interesting year….
Meanwhile….
"Hey Nighteye, what was the name of that kid you wanted me to meet?" All Might asked into his phone. "Yeah the other kid… He doesn't need it. Trust me on that."
TBC….?
Props to Popeye by the way.
