Chapter 7: True strength
"Are you ready for round two?" A smug looking archer looked down at Subaru who was looking back up at him, unsure of how to react, Subaru answers honestly
"Honestly? No, I am not, however, I have no choice but to move forward so that is what I'll do. Onwards to the path of success!" Striking a 'Subaru pose', he talked up to Archer with understanding, he knew that this wasn't some game world designed to help him, he knew he would have to work hard and put in effort and push beyond his limits, he knew that the path of the hero was not an easy one but he would walk this path, despite the consequences of his actions, he would trudge on and become a hero, but first he had training with Archer, something he was most certainly not looking forward to
'I know I can't win, I know that, yet, I have to try, to struggle till I can no longer stand and until I emerge victorious, I have to do something' Carefully reinforcing his body to its limit he prepared to fight with his fists, he remembered some of Archers techniques from last time and would like to try them out, maybe even use his new found 'Authority' to give him the edge in this battle, Subaru began to get ready to pull out his 'unseen hands' when he felt slightly nauseas about it, the only kind of drawback that Beatrice talked about was when you were not compatible with the witch factor, but it didn't happen last time 'What happened between then and now, I can assume that this is the Authority of sloth, if they go off of the seven deadly sins, considering how Betelgeuse went on about slothfulness and diligence, so it means I have become less compatible with the witch factor? How? I'm gonna have to ask Beako about it later after I get my clothes to one of the maids for tailoring but for now, I have to focus on this fight'
Subaru had fully reinforced his body, being his arms, legs, senses, torso, everything. He had to get every edge if he even wanted to land a hit, so Subaru waited, he waited for a chance to exploit a weakness of Archer's. Archer's combat stance had an absurd number of openings, Subaru was wary as he thought this might be on purpose but he had no choice but to take this opportunity or he would never land a hit or improve. Subaru leapt forth with superb power and speed, not the best but still well above average, and threw his fist out to an opening left by his stance, Subaru found himself quickly blocked and countered by a devastating punch making contact with Subaru's jaw, Subaru rolled around violently before stopping and observing himself, he found that he had many scrapes, bruises and cuts littering his body, he could barely stand and his legs felt like spaghetti yet he still had to stand, he would not fall, nor would he break
The reinforcement helped with the damage but not much, he still felt like hell and he could barely remain conscious so he had to steel himself to not buckle under the newfound pressure, he was finding it extremely hard to not just give up, to sit back and relax and not worry about anything, Subaru thought to when he was stabbed in the alleyway and when he nearly died with Elsa, and then with Betelgeuse when he twisted and snapped every bone, muscle and ligament with his unseen hands, no one deserved this kind of pain and torture, so why was he so willing to throw himself into the fray and take the blunt of it all, to take the burdens of all those he cared about, to sacrifice himself for everyone and save them all
In truth, he didn't want to give up, in truth, he really didn't want to give up so he stood, he stood tall and proud with his head held high and glared with determination flaring up all over his face as he once again prepared to go beyond his limits and catch up to Archer and surpass him, he would by all means go beyond his own limits and go beyond! Plus Ultr-! -Sorry wrong series- He would land a hit on Archer, if he had to overpower him with his speed and power of his reinforcement, he would, he no longer would remain slothful, he would struggle until his last breath, he would become strong
The fight went on for a solid ten minute before Subaru was inevitably thrown back forcefully before not being able to get back up and trying to crawl over to Archer to still fight but Archer walked over to him and spoke to him
"You're getting better, you took those opportunities that I had left in my guard, they may have been intentional but you took them without hesitation and you kept getting up no matter how many times, you may not have landed a hit on me yet you still have improved well, your reinforcement has gotten better as well"
"Yeah, I guess but I'm still slightly disappointed though. I tried to use my 'Authority' but I felt really nauseas and dizzy, the only conclusion I can think of is that I'm not compatible with the witch factor" Archer had his interest piqued, they both thought to theorize on the matter as it could help them to find out how to work with the ability
"That spirit did say that, perhaps you did something that did not relate or did the opposite of what the witch factor dictates, we can assume it is sloth due to the mad man's ramblings so perhaps you did something that was not sloth? Maybe you did something diligent or hard working?" Subaru remembered when he was willing to push past the pain and continue forth, perhaps that was his diligence? Was this what his authority didn't agree with?
"It might have been when I pushed through the pain and damage, that was my diligence but then it doesn't explain why Betelgeuse could use it so well, from where I was, he was also pretty diligent"
"I'm afraid we will have to refer to the spirit for this, she probably knows the answer, at least she would have a better chance than us just grasping at straws" Archer was referring to Beatrice, the spirit guarding the forbidden library, as she was the first one to inform them of the witchcraft and the basics regarding it so she would give the information with a little probing and, if necessary, a little bit of convincingbut he hoped it wouldn't have to come to that
"Well, I guess so but what now. Considering I can't really move because of the beating that I just took which wounded my pride as well as my body, so guess I have to thank you for that, huh?" Subaru said as he deadpanned at Archer, Subaru was not impressed, after beating him within an inch of his life, he has to go to the angry little girl again and hope to not get blasted out
"Well, you are going to wake up in a minute, you will probably feel some pain but there will be no damage to your body and you will have to go to that library again, we need some answers" Archer wanted answers to his questions and only the spirit of the forbidden library would be able to give them, thus he urged Subaru to meet with her as soon as possible
"But what about Emilia-tan!? I can't just leave her of she shows up"
"I'm sure she will understand, after all a womaniser like you can't just settle for one now, can he?" The mocking tone of Archers voice and what he said was starting to give Subaru PTSD, Subaru had hoped that he got over this phase yet he also inherited Archers E rank luck so he would face eternal torment, in the form of teasing of course
"I actually hate you, I hope you know that, if Hitler and you were hanging off a cliff and I could only save one of you, I'd stomp your fingers off the cliff so it's quicker" Subaru was only half joking with his statement, Archer was still unfazed with his smug grin and prideful and condescending glare quickly fading into a more serious one, he told Subaru one last thing
"Seriously, we need to speak to the spirit, you should have recovered enough mana to allow me to materialise for longer, because of that I will be present" The barren, apocalyptic wasteland of swords quickly fading out as Subaru stirred awake to be presented with the two maids about to wake him up, initially surprised by this, Subaru asked what they were doing
"Hey Rem, Ram, what's got you in here so early?"
"Sir Subaru, we were merely here to wake you from your slumber" The maids explained with straight faces and monotonous voices
"Remember what I asked? Drop the honorifics, it makes me feel uncomfortable, even if it just when we're alone, just call me Subaru, ok?" Subaru pushed for the maids to call him by his first name
"Sister, sister, Barusu's lust is already in full force and he's just woke up, filthy, just die Barusu"
"Hey! You just turned my name into a binding curse and told me to go die! I'm a knight now you know? You could probably get beheaded for that!" Subaru exaggerated, not realising he is digging his own grave by flaunting his new authority around
"Throwing your power and authority to force people to do whatever you want already, you truly are disgusting, Barusu, go die" The monotonous tone of voice just worsened his pride more, Subaru was feeling attacked
"It's like having a second Archer around, I can't deal with this, I'm actually gonna die from stress or something"
"That is wishful thinking, Barusu, unfortunately that's probably not going to happen" The onslaught of insults only got worse and crueller, he was a knight, how could they treat him like this? This is blasphemy!
"Blasphemy, I say! Blasphemy!"
"Subaru, what is going on so early in the morning?" Emilia came into the room to see a distressed Subaru arguing with an indifferent Ram, not wanting a fight to break out between friends, she stopped the two from arguing and scolded the both of them "Both of you shouldn't fight with eachother! Mouu~ Subaru, I know you are new around here but try to get along with everyone, ok?"
"Exactly, Barusu, stop making trouble so early in the morning, it would ruin your already swiftly decreasing image that people have of you" Interjecting the conversation between the two, she added her own opinion, to the dismay and irritation of a certain black haired, sharp eyed boy
"Ok, but literally nobody was talking to you, so wait your turn, ok?" a bit of venom, barely noticeable, came from Subaru's tone with a bit of smugness mixed in, Emilia was visibly shocked, no one had ever silenced Ram like that and Subaru had just done it as if it was nothing and didn't even bat an eyelid, Ram and Rem were also shocked, albeit less than Emilia but still so, by how Subaru spoke to her, Ram wanted to retort but not in the presence of Emilia
"Ok! That's enough, the both of you, Subaru I'm here to take you to breakfast this morning again" This might become a daily occurrence, Subaru had hoped so before remembering that he had something to do before breakfast today
Bowing before Emilia and clasping his hands together, he asked Emilia "Sorry Emila-tan, go on without me, I have to speak to Beako this morning about something this morning, really sorry! Seriously!"
"O-oh ok, can I ask about what you have to talk about with Beatrice?" Emilia was disappointed that she couldn't walk with Subaru to breakfast today, he always brightened her day up and made her happy every day, she would at least like to know why he wouldn't be coming
"Oh sure! Basically, in short, I got that sin archbishops ability after he died and yesterday when I got it, I could use it fine but today I thought I was going to throw up yesterdays dinner and my knees nearly buckled from pain, Beako knows about all that weird witch stuff so me and Archer are going to confirm a few theories" Emilia was confused and didn't remember him having any ability
'But I don't remember any ability, although I did see some weird things when dust was kicked up, and I did see some random dents and craters being made, and on top of that, Subaru was dodging something but I couldn't see what'
"Oh right, I don't know why but he called them 'unseen hands' but me and Archer could see them so I got them after he died, though I could only use one at the time when I could use it" Subaru explained what little he knew about this new ability he had as well as he could to Emilia, he hardly knew anything about it apart from what Beatrice told him so he had to piece some things together with what he could gather on his own
"Ok Subaru, please be quick so your breakfast doesn't get cold, and so Roswaal can give you your orders on what you are supposed to do as a knight" Emilia explained what most of the day would be like, hopefully he was put on guard duty for Emilia all day, now that would be ideal
And with that, both parties went about their own ways, Emilia, Rem and Ram went to the dining hall while Subaru went to the forbidden library, the problem was which door they would have to take to get there, Subaru was pretty sure it was random as he opened the door it was last time and the library was not there, thus Archer and Subaru had to either try every door or get lucky, which was highly unlikely, so Subaru got to work
"Spatial disruption, huh? So, how do you propose we get through this one Subaru?" Archer hadn't fought with someone who had spatial disruption abilities in a long time and not one with the likes of this so he looked to Subaru to figure it out
"Well, Archer, just watch and learn, watch and learn"
Subaru seemingly randomly stood outside a different door before muttering a 'no good' or a 'not this one' before reaching a random door and shouting out loud "This is it! Archer we have found it, courtesy of yours truly" opening the door revealed a small blonde girl with massive drills and a pinky red frilly dress, sitting on a stool reading a book which Subaru couldn't read, Subaru couldn't read anything at all "Yo Beako! We're here to talk to you. We need your help, we need to know something"
"So, you're not going to drop this absurd nickname, and what do you mean by 'we', I suppose" Beatrice only saw Subaru there so unless she was under some sort of weird magic or spirit ar- oh right, he had a spirit didn't he? He could dematerialize at will, she was guessing it was him who was with him
"Me, I am here as well, we wish to confirm some theories of ours with you" materializing out of seemingly nowhere, Archer stood next to Subaru, still stoically as ever and with a light scowl on his face which seemed to be a permanent feature and an aura which spoke of experience and skill
"go ahead, I have nothing better to do, I suppose" Beatrice looked nonchalant about it and spoke with an uncaring tone, wasting no time Subaru started asking about his ability and why it doesn't work
"So yesterday I was able to use this ability fine, however, when I last tried to use it today, I felt really nauseas and I felt really bad pain in my chest and abdomen, we were thinking that I had somehow become incompatible with my witch factor or we had done something that didn't agree with it, we mentioned that it was likely sloth so we were trying to think if we did something that disagreed with it but there were so many events, so why could I use it yesterday and not earlier today, it makes no sense"
"You would have to do something that seriously went against sloth if you became incompatible with the witch factor for a time, was there a time where you had to do something, you would stop at nothing and after repeatedly being knocked down you got up and didn't even think of giving up as an option, I find it hard to believe something like this could happen in one day, what did you do, I wonder?
Suddenly Subaru had a flashback to when he resolved himself to become strong, to no longer just give up, to become a hero and to keep struggling to his final breath, resolving to try his best and go beyond his limits when he fought Archer and when he repeatedly got beaten within an inch of his life, and yet he stood, he stood up and steeled his nerves to rush forward to get better. He wante- no, needed to become strong, to protect those who can't protect themselves and stand up for the weak and smile while saving people
"Of course, it's actually scary how close you were to the truth, Beako, you pretty much got it straight on the mark, I had a sort of revelation last night, I realised that I wanted to save people and that I would no longer be slothful, would you happen to know if that's it, and if so, how would I be able to get this power back?"
"I'm not quite sure, I've never dealt with anything like this so you'll either just have to deal with the pain when you use it or figure it out on your own, anyway, you should be on your way, that half elf is starting to get restless, I'll take you just outside the dining room" Beatrice looked somewhat sad, this was picked up by Subaru, who in turn smiled brightly at her and spoke to her one last time
"Thank you, Beatrice, I appreciate it and I'll come around to speak with you when I have time, ok?" Subaru spoke softly as his features relaxed slightly and he walked out of the door into the dining room where the rest were waiting for him and the doors closed once again, Beatrice felt lonely again, it's been the same for 400 years, she has been by herself, no one to help her and the only constant in her life was her mother's order to wait for 'that' person to give the forbidden library
'I wonder, are you 'that' person?'
Back in the dining room, Subaru sat down and started eating before realising everyone was in silence looking at him, some with disdain and some with hurt while Emilia looked hurt and confused at him
"Hey hey, what's going on? Why is everyone looking at me, did I do something wrong?" Subaru questioned and got no answer
Archer materialized and got into a combat stance "They think you are an enemy, my guess is that it's the blue haired one who has spread the misinformation, she never liked you from the start and it's obvious that more than a few believe her" He turned to look directly at the blue haired maid and intensified his scowl, his bloodlust dripping out causing Rem to become paralysed in fear as he soke up once again "What did you tell them, answer me quickly because I'm losing my patience, now, speak!" Archer practically shouted at her as she felt that she could move around again and speak, Archer's scowl returned to normal and there was no longer any bloodlust coming from him
"I told them that the filth besides you is a witch cultist and that he should die! He is the enemy, why are you siding with him?! He is the one who kills and pillages villages for a genocidal witch!" Rem was enraged that a witch cultist had infiltrated their ranks and posed to be Emilia's personal knight and then he had a great spirit side with him, he was probably tricked or something because there is no way a great spirit sided with a witch cultist
"And what evidence do you have? He sacrificed himself for the kids and the villagers, he sacrificed himself to fight the sin archbishop and sacrificed himself to save you as well, had he not been there everyone here would be dead from that sin archbishop or you would have died in the loot house with that murderer that He took care of while You did nothing, he is far more heroic and far too moralistic and you have the nerve to call him a witch cultist, while he does things that would get him killed for people he doesn't know, you do nothing, so what evidence do you have?" Archer calmly explained events and provided evidence to support Subaru, Emilia's face lightened up after hearing and remembering this and remembering what Subaru said to her on the carriage, she knew whose side she was on
"Exactly Rem! You can't just say that he is a witch cultist, he killed that sin archbishop as well, why would he do that, killing one of his own wouldn't help!" Emilia was now also supporting him, Subaru would have to thank her later but for now he would focus on this
"But Emilia, he smells of the witch! When it hangs so densely over him how can he not be a witch cultist!" Rem was backed into a corner and was just saying anything that could get them to believe her, there was no way that he wasn't one of them, he must've brainwashed Emilia into a false sense of security to take advantage of her status
"Reeeeeeem, unfortunately soooooome people are cuuuuuuuursed by the wiiiiiicth, so they smeeeeell like heeeeeer" Unexpectedly, Roswaal, intervened and protected Subaru, shutting down Rem's evidence and in turn shutting down the entirety of her argument
Emilia intervened and summoned Puck "Anyway, we can have Puck see if he lies about it"
"Exactly, I can see if anyone lies so it's natural that I would be helpful I this situation. Subaru, look over here for a minute" Puck asked for Subaru's attention for a second and asked him "Subaru, are you a witch cultist?"
"No, I am not one of those monsters" Subaru spoke calmly and concisely, making sure to answer the question

…
"He isn't lying, he is not a witch cultist, your suspicion was misplaced and unneeded, so everything turned out fine, right?" Puck informed everyone that Subaru was, in fact, not a witch cultist and tried to calm everyone down, the tension was thick, the pressure felt as if it would suffocate you, Rem turned to Subaru, bowed and formally apologised
"Please forgive me, Sir Subaru, I believe my actions may have severely offended you and I will accept any punishment you desire for my confrontation on false beliefs" Still bowing, Archer spoke up before Subaru
"If I had my way, I would've eliminated you as a potential threat, fortunately for you, Subaru is too much of a softie to care about something like this" Archer spat cruelly and coldly towards Rem, resentment hanging off of every word as he looked away, seemingly not wanting to look at her, and looked towards Subaru "Looks like you're the judge, Subaru, what do you want to do?"
"Well why should I punish her? It's not like she did anything wrong, I was suspicious and she saw me as a potential threat so she confronted me, at least she didn't try to kill me first, right?" Subaru gave a light chuckle "What right do I have to punish her if she didn't do something wrong, by the way Ram, did she ask you about confronting me?"
"No, why?" Ram had perked up at mention of her name and wanted to know why he needed to know this
"I mean at least she did this on her own and didn't confine in her sister for this, she tried to protect you guys without relying on anyone, I believe that's progress from last night in the carriage right?" Subaru gave a cheeky smile to Rem who was on the verge of tears looked at Subaru
"But I tried to get everyone against you, so why! Why do you defend me! Do you not feel angry towards me!?" Rem shouted at him, Emilia could see where this was going, after all, it did happen to her. As per usual, Subaru was going to help yet another person, someone who tried to have him killed for being something he wasn't
"Because I admire people like you, people who want to help and save those they love from danger, you didn't hesitate to try to defend those around you from a potential threat and you didn't back down until the end" Subaru spoke reassuringly and softly with a radiant smile spread across his face while he was filled with determination 'Just a little more, come on. We're almost there!'
"But why!? Do you want me to join a little harem of yours!? You womaniser! First it was Emilia, then me and who's next? Ram? Beatrice?! Womaniser, enemy of women!" Rem was a sobbing shouting mess, she was trying to get Subaru to admit that it was out of some cardinal desire and not out of the goodness of his heart, she wouldn't be able to take the guilt if that were the case, she just wanted it to be something that wouldn't cause her pain to know
Everything seemed to be in slow motion as Subaru walked to Rem with his chin up and eyes facing straight towards Rem, his features softened up, his already radiant smile somehow shimmering even more brightly before kneeling down to Rem's height
"No silly, I just want you to love and respect yourself, you are worth it, you have people who you care about and people who care about you, so stop putting yourself down and others on a pedestal and just… love yourself" time seemed to get even slower as Subaru wrapped Rem in an embrace as the sobbing got more erratic and she started shaking more violently, Subaru was whispering sweet nothings into her ear while caressing her head until she fell asleep, Subaru whispered one more thing into her ear as she fell to exhaustion "Love yourself, alright?" and with that the whole confrontation ended on a high note, Subaru was cleared of suspicion and probably got a lot more trust from the residents of the mansion, he also helped save Rem from the crushing pit of self-deprecation that he knew all too well, it didn't matter now though, he had saved one more person, hopefully, but with the atmosphere feeling a bit tense he got up to say something but saw Ram making her way over to him, kneeling before him she spoke
"Sir Subaru, I thank you for helping my sister, even after all she's done, she will probably want a punishment to help with the guilt so, can you do it?"
"Wait did you just call me by m-"
"Barusu" Ram spoke with her indifferent tone but you could see the smallest hint of a smile
"-Huff- I suppose I could think of one… Her punishment is" Subaru took a pause before smiling warmly at Rem and Ram and continuing again "You guys have to get along with me and become my friend!" Subaru spoke confidently and with pride
"It has only been a couple of minutes and Barusu's lust is in full swing, be careful Emilia, he might do something nasty to you" Ram couldn't help but have the corners of her lips upturned slightly at the result of the confrontation, she was very wrong about Subaru and she would try to be friendlier towards him but for now they needed to eat breakfast "Regardless, I need to take Rem back to her room to rest…" Ram paused for a moment and looked directly at Subaru before letting the urge to smile run its course, she smiled a truly beautiful and pure smile and spoke once again "And… Thank you, Subaru"
Subaru, Emilia and Roswaal sat down once again to eat their breakfast again and talk about Subaru's future obligations as a knight and what they would do for the rest of the day before a peculiar noise set them off
"-Blegh- The soup is cold, and the bread is hard and stale now, I was looking forward to that as well" Emilia giggled and Roswaal gave a small laugh before speaking to Subaru again
"Suuuuubaru I could heeeeeeat up your food foooooor you with fire maaaaaaagic if you waaaaaanted" Roswaal, still with his weird accent offered to heat his food up for him which Subaru happily accepted and Roswaal chanted something for a small fire to appear under and around Subaru's and Emilia's bowls and food which quickly heated up their food, to which Subaru happily stuffed himself full of soup, bread and an ale and nearly choked but survived because Emilia came up from behind and did a makeshift Heimlich manoeuvre, spitting up the lodged piece of bread back onto his plate, Emilia was pouting while Subaru was in hysterics for some reason while Roswaal just watched with his usual wide smile before calling out to the both of them "Subaruuuu, Emilia, I neeeeed to talk toooooo the boooooth of you"
Finishing laughing and becoming calmer, Subaru listened to Roswaal and turned to face him and thanked him for before
"Oh yeah, thanks Ros-chi, for earlier I mean"
"Yes, thank you Roswaal for heating up the food" Emilia thanked Roswaal in earnest before going silent to listen to him
"Weeeeeell I need Emiliaaaaaa to teach yoooooou how to read, whaaaaaaat knight caaaaaan't read?" Roswaal said with a slight amount of mockery which ticked Subaru off but he would let it slide for now "If yoooooou want Subaruuuuuu we could get Reeeeeeem to teach yooooooou how to fiiiiight if you doooooon't know how"
"Nah, don't worry about it, I already got archer to teach me, he is a bit brutal though but it is definitely helping so I'm fine for now, although I could have someone to teach me to fight with weapons 'cause I'm only using my hands at the moment"
"I could create a sword if you wanted for you to use against me, though I would have to try a bit harder to not get hit and to get counters in"
"Hyeii!Archer! You scared the life out of me, tell me next time or you're actually gonna kill me for real!" Subaru had jumped out of his chair and jumped back all the while cowering his face behind his hands
Muffled laughs came from both Emilia and Roswaal as they watched the two converse with each other, Subaru was shocked to see that no one came to his rescue and instead laughed at his misfortune as Ram came back in and got the gist of the situation
"So Barusu is being made fun of again, how pathetic, and you're supposed to be Emilia-sama's knight, oh how cruel the world is" Seeing Ram was back to normal and back to insulting him, Subaru walked up to Ram
"So, how is Rem, is she ok?
"Sister is fine for now, she will return to work tomorrow while you two study with each other, Emilia-sama be careful of Subaru, his lust is never ending and will probably continue even through death" As Ram continued the onslaught and Subaru showed distress and protested to have these weird rumours put to rest Emilia giggled and looked contently at how her life had gone so far
"What is it Emilia-tan?" Subaru trotted up to Emilia and asked her what happened
"It's nothing Subaru, don't worry about it, anyway, I think we should all make our way now, Subaru follow me and we will begin our studying immediately" Emilia gestured for Subaru to follow her leaving Ram and Roswaal alone in the dining hall and Roswaal turned to speak to Ram
"Raaaaaam, you can taaaaake the daaaaaay of today" Roswaal suggested while standing up to go to his office but before leaving he said "Alsoooooo tell Subaruuuu he is oooooon guard duty, all arooooound the cloooock, including sleeeeping in the saaaaame room" he finally left the room and headed towards his office leaving Ram alone in the dining hall
"I guess I could look after sister today for my day off after telling Barusu his orders" and with that final line of thought, she walked off to go to her sisters' room and thus the second day at the Roswaal mansion started
And that's a wrap, first off, updates are going to be a bit slower starting now because I have to go back to school tomorrow so it'll probably be one chapter a week but I'll probably make them longer to make up for it also sorry if things seem a bit rushed at the end, I wanted to get this done as quickly as possible so I could get it up today and not tomorrow so yeah, it might seem rushed, idk.
