A Study in Emerald: Silver Linings
(100 PROMPTS)
Summary: "People don't get pauses like these very often. Some people never receive them at all...I did." Kagome looked at Draco, her cheeks flushed as she smiled up at him, the cold air was nipping painfully at her nose, but she didn't care. If there had been a clock nearby, it would have stopped. Occasionally, there were minutes that got extra seconds. Moments so precious the universe stretches to make additional room for them...these moments were hers.

"What are you on about?"
Looking up, Kagome pulled herself out of her surprise.
"Hey," Blaise laughed, "I'm just repeating the gossip in Pansy and Greengrass's compartment."
"You want to share the rest of this gossip with us?" Nott closed his own book and turned his attention away from teasing Draco and Kagome.
"Well, from my understanding, the youngest Greengrass daughter is the one that the contract will be bound to. You know her, Draco?"
"No, and while they are welcome to try, I doubt my mother would agree to something like this so early in my youth." Relatively sure, at least.
That's right, Kagome shivered at a sudden chill. Looking at Blaise who had cracked the window a bit before sitting down across from Kagome.
"Don't worry, Daphne said she thinks her parents are reaching blindly out of reach. Even she doubts it'll go through. Not that Pansy cared one way or the other, she was piping mad to hear that another girl would be in the way of her own negotiations."
Kagome bubbled into a fit of laughter, not able to help herself. "You're so popular, Draco."
Nott shook his head, but couldn't conceal his own humor, locking eyes with a shocked Draco who didn't know what to say or even how to respond.
"We've got a ways to go before we get to Hogwarts, I'm going to nap." Blaise sighed, leaning back comfortably with his arms crossed back behind his head. Nott and Draco returned to their books, and Kagome... Kagome pulled out a journal she'd begun doodling in not too long after she'd started school. Dating the page... she wrote down the day's proceedings.

When they'd finally arrived at Hogwarts, Draco was standing and stretching while the others grabbed their stuff. It was this moment when something flittered from the book. Going unnoticed by most of the room. Most being Blaise and Kagome who were talking about their potions class that would be the first class they had come tomorrow. Theodore picked up the small item and turned it over, obviously it was a photo, but the photo had his eyes widening. A beautiful woman, held in the arms of a kind looking man, and in her arms, there was a baby. A little thing; with a tuft of black on her head, eyes closed as she slept peacefully in her mothers arms. The family of three looked to be completely at peace, in life and love. Looking into the camera, the man tightened his arms around the woman and kissed her on the cheek before looking back down at the baby. Not a normal Slytherin family.
Giving Kagome a sidelong glance, he quickly passed the photo over to Draco who slipped it in the book it fell from.
Draco carefully put the book up in his trunk, he would return the photo to Kagome later when they were alone. Not that he didn't trust Blaise, and clearly Theo already knew about it. It just...felt personal. He knew that her father was dead, and this was one of the precious photos.
"Come on!" Blaise glanced back inside, "if you two walk any slower, you'll be stuck on the train for another twelve hour ride back to Kings Cross. Kagome's leaving all of us behind."

As night fell, Kagome was lounging in front of the fireplace alone. Her mind was busily thinking about the finals as she studied for transfigurations. She wasn't worried about potions, not in the least. Her favorite subjects were easily Charms and Potions. The two seemed to be made for her! She wondered mindlessly if maybe it had something to do with her wand. Ollivander had been a bit uncertain as to whether the wand was right for her, but it had responded well.
Twirling her wand between her fingers, she looked the strangely designed wand. The wands grip was jagged at the end, yet smooth where her fingers met the cherry wood. It bent much like a cherry blossom branch, not so much that it was awkward, but just enough that it had character. The core was Dragon Heartstring, and it was a perfect eleven inches. She really treasured it, but part of her did wonder if the wand was the reason she excelled the way she did in Charms. She couldn't wait to try her hand at Defense Against the Dark Arts, having not had much of a chance to do anything besides counter jinxes yet.
"There you are,"
Turning, she lost control of the spin of her wand and it fell into the couch. Moving quickly, she reached back into the settee and pulled her wand free of the cushions. "Draco," she met the humorous eyes of her new friend.
"Here, I don't think you meant for me to have this. I guess...your father kept it there to keep it safe."
He pulled from the book what looked like a small piece of paper, though on closer inspection, Kagome realized it was a photo. "That... wait, was this in the book?" She had thought she'd gone through the pages thoroughly enough, clearly not. This picture, she didn't recall seeing it. Not once in her house. Momentarily, she wondered if someone had taken it for her father and he'd just kept it for himself. "Thank you."
"It's nothing. I know your dad means a lot to you..." awkwardly, he leaned forward on the settee, looking at the photo. He looked the complete opposite of his own father. Where Kagome's had a warm smile, and seemed to openly show his love and devotion to his wife and daughter, well... his dad loved him. He knew that. He just showed it like a traditional pureblood did. Not with hugs and smiles, but with nods of approval and stern claps on his shoulder. Smiles were rare, but not unheard of. Thinking about it, Draco guessed he could have been unlucky and ended up with a father that was like his Uncle Rodolphus or someone else equally cold and cruel. Thankfully, he'd never had to meet the man, or the woman he'd married. His aunt... no, he was definitely luckier than some. "Are you going to be up much later?"
"I was thinking another hour, I'm going over my notes."
"Mind if I join you?"
"Sure," she smiled brightly up at him.
Moments like this, he couldn't believe she was a Slytherin. She was just... so bright... and he was her friend now. Somehow, he'd captured a bit of the worlds light, and he had no intention of ever losing it.
