Before I knew it, it was eight twenty at night. I had just put on a loose, blue t-shirt and a pair of pajama pants for the night. I was excited about watching Titanic. Last time I watched it was Olivia's birthday in sophomore year. Now that was a party. We stayed up watching Titanic and Singin in the Rain, but it was insane.
"Hey, Abigail, dinner is ready." Shouted Rodrick from the kitchen.
"Coming!" I yelled back. I opened the door to my room to see Rodrick in the kitchen. Where I walked over to. The TV was already on, and it was clear the channel was planning on playing Titanic in a few more minutes.
"I have prepared for you a lightly breaded, baked chicken breast, served with a tangy, tomato sauce, and a side of sliced potatoes." Said Rodrick fancily as he handed me a plate with four box chicken tenders, a helping of fries, and a squirt of ketchup.
"Thanks." I said with a smile as I took the plate from Rodrick's hands. The two of us slowly made our way to the old leather couch that was across from the boxy TV. "Oh, it's starting." I said excitedly as the murky, blue waters of the Atlantic flashed brightly on the screen.
"I forgot that it starts this way." Rodrick said as the 90's submarine crew glowed on the pixels instead of rich people in Edwardian outfits. The movie continued, and the two of us were mostly silent, until that scene when the drawing of Rose was washed off. Rose's chest was blurred out, since this was on cable.
"Damn, no tiddies." Rodrick said with a sigh. I nearly choked on my chicken tender from laughing.
"Gross you pervert!" I exclaimed, but I couldn't stop myself from laughing. The couch had three cushions, Rodrick sitting on the far right one, me sitting on the far left. Titanic continued on, and soon, old Rose recalled how "it's been 84 years."
"Here we go, baby." Rodrick said as the wreck began to morph back into the grand ship, I smiled.
Then, a commercial break. We both groaned and rolled our eyes. Then we looked at each other. I had finished my dinner so I brought my paper plate back into the kitchen to throw it out. Young Rose steps out of the old car. "It is unsinkable, God himself could not sink this ship!" Exclaimed Cal.
"I now blame the Titanic's sinking on him." Rodrick said.
"Honestly, same." I said with a nod.
Then the movie continued. A young Leonardo DiCaprio was sitting at a table in old clothes, playing cards.
"Oh, he's so hot." I sighed. I could tell this made Rodrick a little antsy.
"Ehhh." He said with a shrug. "That is the most raggedy deck of cards I have ever seen." He said when he saw the deck of cards that Jack was using. "Honestly, I like the italian friend." He said a few moments later after he saw Jack and Fabrizio running towards the ship with the fast music playing in the score.
"Man, this music is popping off." I said, bopping my head to the fast fiddling. Rodrick seemed to be enjoying it too.
"Rose is so damn cool," Rodrick said. We had just watched the scene where Cal and Rose were talking about Picasso's art in their room. Titanic continued. Jack was shouting "I'm the king of the world!" with Fabrizio standing really close to him. "Why do I ship the Italian guy and Leo?" Rodrick asked.
"Don't worry, Rodrick, we all do?" I said, looking at Rodrick with a little sass. Then, Rose was having lunch with the old rich people. "Damn, I hate that guy with the ugly mustache." I said, pointing to Mr. Ismay. Rodrick exclaimed loudly with delight when Rose roasted the heck out of the men.
"Oh forget it boyo, you'd as like have angels fly out of your arse to get next to the likes of her." Tommy Ryan said on the screen.
"Whatever, they hook up anyway." I say with a shrug. Rodrick snickered. "Oh I hate this scene." I said as we both say Rose hanging off the railings of the Titanic. I was tensing up, I thought I saw Rodrick do the same.
"This dude is so smooth." Rodrick said as Jack and Rose began to talk with each other, and Jack was convincing Rose to climb back over. When Rose slipped and was being held on one arm by Jack we both jolted back in surprise, and our breathing quickened. I heard Rodrick breathe a huge sigh of relief when he and Rose fell back onto the ship.
"Oh, and now these sons of a biscuit are back." Rodrick said, lifting his hand to the old, rich men running towards the two of them.
"Women and machinery do not mix." Said one of the men.
"Fuck you and your mustache!" Exclaimed Rodrick, pointing to the old, round man who said the misogynistic thing.
"Yeah!" I retorted. We looked at each other, nodded, and high fived. Soon, Jack and Rose were talking on the sun deck.
"God look at that thing, you would have gone straight to the bottom." Jack said cheekily about Rose's engagement ring. Rodrick burst out in a short cackle of laughter, I smiled.
"Wow, he's not bad." Rodrick said with a nod as the screen flashed with Jack's drawings. Some of the more revealing drawings were blurred out, because cable. "Still no tiddies." This time I laughed.
"We called her Madame Bijoux." Explained Jack about one of his drawings.
"What, Misses Jewelry, that's a stupid name." Rodrick said. Then, the old, rich ladies were sipping tea and gossiping. "Oh, here comes that vulgar Brown woman." One of them exclaimed.
"No, she's a badass!" I said emphatically. I saw Rodrick nod out of the corner of my eyes. "Oh, and now this crusty and his mustache are back." I said, the camera panned out to Mr. Ismay and I pointed at him.
"If we were to get into New York on Tuesday night and surprise them all. Make the morning paper." Explained Mr. Ismay.
"Oh, you'll make the morning papers alright," Rodrick said. Then Jack was teaching Rose how to spit, and Jack's first spit travelled quite a distance. "Now that was impressive." Rodrick said, pointing at the screen. Then, Molly Brown was on screen, dressing Jack in a set of tails. "Can we admit that she is awesome?" Rodrick asked.
"One hundred percent," I added. Soon, Jack found himself conversing with the group of first-class passengers, who were all asking him demeaning questions. However, Jack answered each one perfectly.
"He handled himself really nicely there." Rodrick said as he nodded. "So you want to go to a real party?" Jack asked. Then, the tonal whiplash hit. They were in the plain, dingy steerage, with a rowdy Irish jig playing. Fabrizio was dancing with a blond woman, and the crowded space was filled with the third class passengers dancing and drinking.
"Now that's a party." I said with a smile. Then, Jack was asking Rose to dance. Two of their hands were intertwined and raised up, Jack had a hand on Rose's hip, Rose rested one of her's on Jack's shoulder.
"You know what, Abigail, let's dance." Rodrick said as he stood up. I blushed, but thankfully it was too dark for Rodrick to notice. I scoffed and paused for a second. However, I stretched my hand out, and Rodrick yanked me off of the couch, and we adjusted our hands accordingly.
"We're gonna have to get a little bit closer." Jack said to Rose. Then, Rodrick pushed my back closer to his, and our faces were only a few inches apart. Then, the music began to pick up, Rose and Jack began to prance around the steerage. Rodrick and I pranced around the room, hoping in a small orbit around the center of the room. However, our eyes were glued onto the screen.
When Jack and Rose broke apart, Rodrick and I did. Then, Jack entered into his footwork frenzy of toe digs, heel digs, and shuffles. With my eyes glued to the screen, I was able to copy all of the footwork that switched between Jack and Rose almost exactly, and Rodrick's jaw dropped.
"Nice job, Owen." Rodrick said, and soon, the two of us had our hands clasped together, and we ended up spinning in a circle until the scene cut out. Then, we plopped ourselves back onto the couch, this time a cushion closer to each other. Then, Rose showed off and outmanned the men when she stood en pointe, barefoot. "That was insane!" Rodrick exclaimed as Rose's bare, big toe was all that kept her up.
"My friend Michelle took ballet for a while, she can do that." I said, Rodrick stared at me, shocked. Then came the frightening scene when Cal swiped the table away and emotionally abused Rose, then came the scene when Rose's mother revealed to the audience that they were broke.
Jack was sneaking onto the first class deck, and snuck Rose into the gymnasium. Then, Jack gave his monologue, the "You jump I jump" iconic one to Rose, "that fire is going to burn out." Rose rejected Jack, and then she saw the mother forcing the young, first class girl to sit up straight and proper.
"Hello, Jack, I changed my mind." Rose said as she was stepping out to the deck. Soon, Rose was climbing up onto the rail, straightening her arms out. "I'm flying!" She exclaimed. "Come Josephine, in my flying machine." Jack began to sing. Then, the two of them turned their faces in towards each other, and kissed.
"Finally." Rodrick sighed out. Then a commercial break. There had been a lot of commercial breaks since the movies started. However, when it was finally over, and old Rose revealed that that was the night the Titanic sank.
"That is true, but I'm not used to working in such horrible conditions!" Jack said in a comical French accent. The two were in Rose's room.
"Jack, I want you to draw me like one of your French girls." Rose said. Rodrick and I both exclaimed "ohhhhhhh" at the same time and slowly began to look at each other. We knew what would happen next. It wasn't long until we saw Rose's blurred curves and chest. I heard Rodrick's breathing become short and heavy.
"Sorry, Rodrick, once again no tiddies." I said, looking at him with a smirk. Rodrick rolled his eyes and looked back at the screen.
"I believe you are blushing Mr. Big Artiste." Rose said.
"Well, yeah, no duh!" Exclaimed Rodrick with a slightly confused expression on his face. The drawing scene continued, Rodrick made a few jokes that I didn't hear. "You know, we could try that sometimes." Rodrick said pointing to Rose's bare body on the screen, with Jack sketching her in the background.
"Shut up!" I exclaimed. Then, the camera zoomed into her eyes, and faded back into Old Rose.
"Wasn't that guy in Lord of the Rings?" Asked Rodrick. It was a few scenes later and the captain with the white beard was in it. I shrugged. Then, it was back to Rose's suite, and Mr. Lovejoy burst in. Rose and Jack tried to scamper out of the room, but Mr. Lovejoy found them, and the iconic chase scene began, with the fast, Irish fiddle music playing in the background.
"Bye." Rose said innocently with a small wave after flipping off Mr. Lovejoy. Rodrick stood up and clapped for a few moments. Rose and Jack ran through the engine room, then they made their way to the cargo room with the old car.
"Oh, I know where this is going." Said Rodrick with a smile as he lightly shook his head. I gave a small laugh.
"To the stars." Rose said, and Rose pulled Jack from the driver's seat into the back. "Put your hands on me, Jack." Rose said a few lines later.
"Oh that's not all he is going to put on you." Rodrick said, his head angled slightly. I rolled my eyes and blushed. Rodrick stretched, and spread his arms out. Although we were much closer than before, we were still sort of far apart. Rodrick rested his hand on the back of the couch, and the tips of his fingers brushed my shoulder, and I gave a small gasp. Then there was the filler scene with the two officers in the crow's nest. After that, we were back in the cargo room, and the camera was scanning around the old car, the windows so foggy you couldn't see through them.
Then, there was that iconic bit where Rose's hand shot up and pressed against the glass before sliding down. The second Rose's hand hit the glass, Rodrick and I both let out the loudest, most obnoxious cackles of roaring laughter, and it lasted a little longer than it should have.
"When the ship docks, I'm getting off with you." Rose said, as the two of them were standing on the deck.
"I think you already did." Rodrick said. I was barely recovering from my previous bout of laughter, this didn't help it. Rose and Jack began to make out again. The lookouts got distracted. The bell rang out, and the iceberg came into view. Rodrick and I tensed up.
"Iceberg right ahead!" The officers shouted. The crew of Titanic rushed around the ship, trying to get it to turn. I looked over to Rodrick, he was tilting his head towards the left multiple times, as if to help the ship turn itself. The second the Titanic hit the iceberg, Rodrick and I were dead silent.
The third class steerage was just beginning to flood. Then, Jack and Rose returned to the suite to find Cal there, and he accused Jack of stealing. Of course, Lovejoy has planted the Heart of the Ocean in Jack's pocket, and Jack was taken to be held prisoner. Mr. Andrews revealed the Titanic was going to sink, with not enough lifeboats.
"I liked Mr. Andrews." Rodrick said sadly.
"Same." I said with a sigh. Then came the awful scene when Cal slapped Rose, and the officers on Titanic were giving them detailed instructions to go to the deck. This paralleled the brief, abrupt "Lifebelts on" given to the third class. Rose, her mother, and Cal were making their way to the deck.
"The ship will sink." Mr. Andrews told Rose. A few lines later, "You remember what I told you about the boats?"
"Women and children first." The captain ordered. Then, the band started playing "Wedding Dance." The steerage was getting crowded, and there were crowding by the locked door, being fiercely guarded by the crew. The first of the lifeboats began to lower. Mr. Lovejoy left Jack to die in his chains before kneeing him. Rose spit in Cal's face to get away from him and find Jack.
The water began to rise. Rose went on her extremely long odyssey to find Jack, then find the axe, and break his chains, which made us jolt a little bit. After what seemed like an hour of Rodrick and I watching the screen tensely, with a few scenes on the deck of the Titanic, Jack and Rose broke through that locked door and found themselves in the steerage, with the rest of third class.
"You can't keep us down here like animals, the ship's bloody sinking!" Shouted Tommy Ryan. "For God's sake there are women and children down here. Jack, Tommy, and Fabrizio reunited, and Cal took the diamond from the suite. With a bench, Tommy, Jack, and Fabrizio broke down the gate.
"Mr. Lowe, man this boat." Said one of the officers.
"Oh my goodness, my friends and I had the biggest crush on that guy." I said, pointing to Officer Lowe. Rodrick chuckled.
"Well, that was fun." Rodrick said as he stood up. Then, basically every character is trying to scramble to find a lifeboat. Rose was being pushed onto a lifeboat by Cal and Jack, but while it was lowering, Rose and Jack looked into each other's eyes, with the sad music playing, Rose jumped back onto Titanic.
"Why did she do that?" I asked in earnest, Rodrick rolled his eyes. Then I saw the two kiss. "Ok, that's cute." Then, Cal grabbed a gun and began to shoot at them. I gasped, this part always managed to knock me off guard.
"I put the diamond in the coat, I put the coat on her!" Cal exclaimed as Rose and Jack ran away.
"That's what you deserve, you ugly." I shouted at the screen. Jack and Rose run around the sinking ship some more. We watched the next few scenes silently, barely even breathing.
Then, many doomed passengers are crowding the boats, trying their best to get a place on some of the last few lifeboats. Mr. Murdoch fires a few shots, one of which hits Tommy.
"No!" Rodrick shouts as Tommy Ryan falls. Then, Officer Murdoch puts a bullet through his head. As Rose and Jack run, Rose has a brief conversation with Mr. Andrews before he reveals his doomed fate. "What, no Mr. Andrews too!" Rodrick exclaimed again. "Ugh, I hate this movie." Rodrick said, burying his face in his hands. I couldn't help but give a small smile.
Then, the band began to play their last, sad song. I felt a few tears prick my eyes. Mr. Andrews adjusted the clock, the Captain entered the steering room, the old couple lay in bed, the Irish woman told the story of Tir Na Nog, everything was floating in the water, Fabrizio was desperately trying to free the last lifeboat and remove Tommy's vest.
"I've never watched passed this scene." Rodrick said.
"What!" I exclaimed.
Then it was the final stretch. The ship had no more lifeboats, and everyone was making their way to the back of the ship, the rudders were being raised out of the water. Rodrick's jaw was dropped. Rodrick even let out a small screaming yelp when Fabrizio was crushed by the smoke billow.
"No, my ship!" Exclaimed Rodrick.
"Jack, this is where we first met." Rose said. People began to slide down the deck of Titanic.
When the man who tumbled off the ship hit the propeller, Rodrick did let out a small chuckle, but I gave a small slap on his arm, which nearly touched my shoulder. Then, Titanic's power cut, everything was dark, and Titanic began to break in half. Jack and Rose held on as the back half of Titanic began to bob up and down. Then, the end of the ship began to sink straight down. I could tell Rodrick was a little nervous. Soon, Rose was lying on the large door, and Jack was hanging onto it, fully in the water. Molly Brown was begging the boat to turn around.
"Look, Abigail it's your boyfriend." Rodrick said, pointing to Officer Lowe, who was trying to organize the boats.
Jack and Rose were having their final conversation. "Don't you do that, don't you say your goodbyes." Jack said. Jack continued to beg for Rose to promise that she would survive tonight. "Winning that ticket was the best thing that has ever happened to me." Jack said. I heard a slight sniffling noise.
"Are you crying?" I asked.
"No." Said Rodrick with a scoff as he was trying to hide his face.
"No, it's sweet." I said with a small smile. "I'll never let go." Rose said. The scene passed, Rose was still waiting on the door, and the boat was coming back, searching through the water to find any people who hadn't died of the cold.
"There's a boat, Jack." Rose said desperately, trying to wake Jack up. Their sad theme kicked in. "I'll never let go, I promise." Rose said. Rose then let Jack slowly begin to sink into the cold, Atlantic waters.
"Wait he dies!" Exclaimed Rodrick, his jaw was dropped, his eyes wide. I looked at him, confused, how has no one spoiled it for him by now. By now, Rose was blowing on the whistle, signalling her survival, and the scene cut back to Old Rose. Rodrick was still reeling in shock.
Rose and the other survivors were waiting in the boats, until a boat with the words Carpathia painted on it appeared. Cal was walking on the deck with the third class survivors, where Rose was.
"Thank you for finally dumping him." Rodrick said as she heard Old Rose narrate that it was the last time she had ever saw Cal. I nodded in agreement. "Dawson, Rose Dawson." Rose said, and Rodrick gasped. "Oh that's something."
"I love this movie." I muttered. Then it was back in the nineties. A few scenes later, Old Rose was standing at the end of the boat, and she stepped onto the railing. She opened her hand to reveal that she had the diamond.
"Wait, she had it the whole time?" Rodrick asked, I simply rolled my eyes. Then, Rose dropped it in the water, and Rodrick went ballistic. "What?! Why would she do that, doesn't her granddaughter have student loans or something?"
Then the camera panned over to all of the old photos of Rose. Rose fishing, flying planes, riding horses, and Rodrick's head tilted. The camera panned into the ocean, and Titanic faded from the sunken wreckage, back into the splendor it once was, and Rodrick gave a nod in approval.
"Oh she died." He said sadly when he saw Rose, dressed in white, going to kiss Jack. "I bet she has wanted to do that for a long time." He said with a smile. Then, the movie ended, but not before Rodrick looked at me. "That was fabulous." He said, however, the iconic song, My Heart Will Go On, began to play. "You know what Abigail, sing." He said. The intro was almost over, so I opened my mouth and…
"Every night in my dreams…" I began. Rodrick then looked at me, impressed. I continued to sing, I learned this song as a joke my junior year of college. "You're here, there's nothing to fear…" I belted. I will admit that my voice sounded really awesome, Rodrick's jaw dropped as I hit the high notes and sustained them. However, all good things must come to an end, and the song ended.
"We have a talented singer in our midst." Rodrick said happily. I gave a small curtsy. Then I turned on my phone, almost midnight.
"Whatever, it's late, good night." I said as I began to walk away from the couch and TV, and into the hallway.
"Goodnight." Rodrick said as we both retreated into our separate rooms.
A/N: Sorry for the long, really random chapter… i just love Titanic
