I hate it when it rains. It absorbs all of the slime and filth and pours it right back on you. That was what New York was all about. Here, its more tame than there. Names Jessica Jones, Privet Investigator. I've spent my life doing this, watching crime after crime repeat its self, like a broken record. This city with no one to trust, and no one to love, where the only thing to drink is at the bottom of a bottle.
Looking over at my assistant, she looked disgusted. "This place is extremely messy!?" She yelled, with me just staring at her as she started cleaning up the mess of empty bottles and ramen cups.
"We've all got to deal with hardships, like me. I have a clean freak of an assistant." I said, with her taking my glass and throwing it in the bag of trash.
"Don't even start, you need customers if you want to make it here, let alone stay here." She said as she put the bag in the trash and too a seat at her desk. "I don't see how you can live like this, there next to nothing in here!" She said, with me shrugging my shoulders.
"I've lived in worse." I said as she slid her chair over to my desk.
"Ok, for real, we have a problem." She said, with me staring down at her.
"When did we have a problem?" I asked, not really caring.
"Some jerk came by and said we need to pay for cable, like now." She informed, with me rolling my eyes at her. "I'm putting a padlock outside." She said, looking off to the side.
"We don't even have cable, we have broadcast." I said, with her nodding as she agreed with me. Hearing a knock, I made my way over to the door and nearly ripped it off of its hinges, with me looking at a woman. "I'm sure my assistant has already told you to leave, and I will do the same, we don't have cable." I said, getting ready to close the door in their face.
"Wait, I want to hire you!" She said, catching both of us off guard as we thought that it was the cable person again.
Later
"Sorry about that, the cable guy has been trying to get us to get cable." I informed as I placed down some tea for her while I drank from my bottle. "Really I'm surprised someone like you would hire us." I said, with her nodding.
"Isn't that why most people come here?" She asked, with me nodding.
"Sure, to look for people, but not animals." I said, with her frowning at that.
"My husband and I love that cat like it was our child. I cant imagine what he will fill if he knew I had lost it." She informed with a saddened expression on her face.
"Sounds like he's out of the picture." I pointed out, not caring about it in the slightest.
"Yes, he passed away around a year ago." She informed with a deeper frown.
"Sorry to hear that." I said, watching as my assistant was sniffing the air around our client. "I can see why this cat means so much." I said as I glared at my assistant. "A missing person is one thing, a cat on the other hand is something that is usually taken to animal control or whatever they are called." I said, with her nodding.
"I know, its beneath you, you look like someone who would prefer something dangerous." She said, with me leaning back into my seat.
"Trust me, danger finds me." I muttered to myself.
"I'll give you five hundred thousand." She said, shocking both me and my assistant who jumped onto the couch next to me. "I'll pay you the first half up front if you take the case, you can keep that for your troubles if ou find Nico or not."
"Very generous offer but-"
"We'll take it!" My assistant said, with me glaring at her. "Jessica Jones is on the case!" She said as she stood up and gave a salute.
Later
"No one would wear that much clothing and be conferrable." I said as I watched a blond man eating a few tables in front of us. He was wearing Black boots, Black pants, Black shirt, Black vest, Black Jacket, Black gloves, and the only thing that wasn't covered was his face, hell, he even ate while keeping his hands covered. IT WAS HOT OUT, HOW WAS NE NOT DYING OF HEAT STROKE?! "He isn't normal, maybe he's one of those mutants?" I said with a frown.
"What's your problem, quit staring at him!" My assistant said, with me staring at the man.
Looking at the newspaper, I frowned once I saw a suicide on the front cover. Reading into it, I frowned as this was almost exactly what happened a month ago. "Former Cosmetics company falls to death. Family is shocked, never showed any signs of depression. If there's one thing I've learned, when two more more suicides look too familiar, its a murder." I said as I leaned back into my chair.
"We should go to the animal shelter and put up a bunch of posters. We could make fliers, even get the kids around town to help us for free." My assistant said, with me nodding as that could help with the cat case, but I was focused on this suicide.
"Its the same company every time." I said as I remembered that this wasn't just twice, but it has happened multiple times. "A string of suicides, and each of them were an employee of VER Cosmetics." I said as I looked up at my assistant, who blinked as she knew where I was going.
"VER Cosmetics?" She asked, with me nodding. "That lady from earlier was wearing one of their perfumes, its super expensive. Didn't you notice that she broke a bottle over her head?" She asked, with me nodding.
"Yeah, I guess you could say that, but I didn't want to be rude." I said as I could still smell it. "Thanks again." We heard the man, with us watching him leave.
As he walked past, I could see it in his eyes, hell, I could feel it coming off of him. Death followed him wherever he goes. "Did you see him, he looked extremely dangerous. Think he will go out with me if I tell him that I'm in college?" She said with drool coming out of her mouth.
"He's dead on the inside, he lost someone close to him, and not just one person, multiple, almost like it was his entire family." I said, keeping my eyes on him. "Reminds me of Frank Castle." I said as I turned back around.
"You mean the Punisher?" She asked, with me nodding.
"The same. Knowing him, he's up to something, best to stay out of it." I said, looking back down at the paper. This is what I need to focus on.
Later
"Any luck on the cat?" I asked my assistant as I walked up on her as she was looking at the black cats that were brought up to to by the kids.
"No, and you?" She asked as she got up and walked over to me. "Any luck on your research on that case you decided to employ yourself to?" She asked, with me nodding.
"That widows husband owned VER Cosmetics, all of the dead employees who died were connected to said man, its more than a coincidence." I said, looking up at her as she played with the cats and kids, having ignored me. "This is why I have her do the small jobs." I said with a face palm.
The next day
"I'm sorry for the wait." The owner of the cat said as we sat in her office.
"Its fine." I said, with me looking around the room, seeing all of the perfumes and pictures around. "That's quite the collection, do you feel its a bit much?" I asked, not really caring.
"It was my husbands passion." She informed, with me nodding.
"I've read up on him." I said, with her raising an eyebrow at him. "He started VER cosmetics from the ground up, and once he left the board of directors he became an executive member." I said, looking at my notes on what I had on him.
"Yes, I cant tell that's not all you have, you practically know everything already." She said with a slight glair.
"Just the basics." I said, where her other cat climbed onto my lap and sat down.
"That's unusual, Sindel doesn't like strangers, but she likes you." She said, with me nodding as I didn't care about her cat.
"Lucky me." I said sarcastically.
"You like cats?" She asked, with me shaking my head.
"Not very fond of them." I said, as I didn't hate nor like cats. "You mind if I use your bathroom?" I asked, with her nodding, where I picked up her cat and moved it while I went down stairs to use the bathroom.
Later
'She is bound to have more information on the suicides.' I thought as I entered another room, with me stopping once I saw the man from yesterday putting books onto the shelf. "Hey, I'm detective Jones, can you tell me where I can find any information that the head of this house would have on the company VER cosmetics?" I asked, but he shook his head.
"Sorry, but no. I know the detective, and you're not her. A spy maybe, but detective no." He said, with me frowning at that.
'If he knows them he must be friends or enemies.' I thought as I got closer to him. "Why cover your body up to such a degree, its bound to be hot, hell I'm hot just by wearing this leather jacket." I said, with him looking back at me.
"PI it is, sorry, but I cant help you." He said, impressing me at how fast he figured out hat I was a PI.
"You look familiar, you got a name?" I asked, with him nodding.
"I have many, but most of them I don't go by anymore. The one I do is Dante." He said, with me frowning at that.
'He's not lying, nor is he giving up anything else. If I had to guess, he's trained to tell truths while keeping lies on the surface, S.H.I.E.L.D. maybe?' I thought as I crossed my arms. "What is someone like you doing here, I'm sure Fury doesn't have reason to be looking into this." I said, with him shaking his head.
"I don't work for Fury." He said, with me smirking.
'Bingo.' I thought as I caught him. "So you worked for S.H.I.E.L.D?" I asked, with him shaking his head.
"I do not work for S.H.I.E.L.D." He said, keeping the same expression.
"But you know Fury and what he does." I said, with him nodding.
"Yes, I know him and what he does." He said as he placed the last book on the shelf. "I also know that you shouldn't be asking me questions for a case you are working on." He said, walking past me to get more books.
"Hey, I'm talking to you!" I said, grabbing his arm, but I wasn't expecting to get flipped over him and tossed to the ground. The next thing I knew, I had claws at my throat, shocking me at who this was. Every detective knew the legend of the Insane Detective, every man woman and child knew the Mutant Hero, Incubus.
"Do me a favor, don't get involved in my affairs'." He said, retracting his claws as the door opened.
"I heard a noise, is there something wrong?" The cat owner said as she walked in, looking at us.
"Sorry, she startled me, my reflexes kicked in!" He said as he helped me up to my feet.
"Yeah, sorry about that." I said as I looked at him. "I was going to ask him if he knew anything about your cat." I said, with her shaking her head.
"He just started here today, I doubt he would know." She said, with me keeping my eyes on him.
'Knowing him, he isn't here by chance.' I thought as I knew not to mess with someone who could drain the life out of me in a blink of an eye, someone who was a run on sight if ever turned evil. The only reason I knew he was a run on sight threat from S.H.I.E.L.D. was because of Luke Cage when he was with the avengers for a short bit. "I'll leave you to it." I said, where I followed her back into her office.
Once we walked in, I took my seat once more. "He isn't one for conversation, likes to get straight to the point and get to work as soon as possible, as far as I've seen." She informed, with me nodding. "So, have you any leads on my cat?" She asked, with me shaking my head.
"No, my assistant is using the kids around town to help look for it, we've even posted up fliers and posters of the cat." I informed, with her biting her thumb nail.
"I just know its her doing." She said, gaining my attention at the mention of some new woman. "Togishi, my husbands Ex, she must of taken the cat!" She said while narrowing her eyes.
"You've had this suspicion and you didn't bother going to check your self?" I asked, annoyed with her. "I know that you stole him from her, and with her getting nearly everything he owns, I don't see how she could be bitter enough to come here for a cat." I said, with her leaning forward.
"You don't know her like I do!" She all but yelled, with me knowing something was up. "Can you go and see, she lives nearby and I hear that she travels frequently!" She suggested, with me knowing something was going to happen.
Later
Walking up to the bus stop, I saw Dakota sitting on a bench, looking as bored as he did dead on the inside. "Why are you here?" I questioned, with him looking at me.
"Going home." He said as scooted over, with me taking a seat next to him. "You with S.H.I.E.L.D?" He asked, with me shaking my head.
"No, my husband was for a time, Power Man ring a bell?" I asked, with him nodding his head.
"Power Man, AKA, Luke Cage, Ex-Avenger, now hero for hire. Co-Workers are Iron Fist, AKA, Danny Rand, Elektra, Jessica Jones, and DareDevil, AKA, Mat Murdock." He listed off, with me nodding.
"I'm not really one of them, I just get tossed into the mix." I said, with him nodding.
"That's our life then." He said, with me nodding as I leaned back. "You drink?" He asked, with me looking at him.
"You buying?" I asked, with him nodding as he got up, where I followed him.
The next day
'This house is a complete dump.' I thought as I walked threw the yard and saw nothing but garbage bags. Making my way to the back door, I pushed it open, breaking the lock. Walking in, I saw that it was just as bad with very little room to walk. 'How does one live like this?' I thought as I walked down the hall and pushed the door to my right open, where I saw the cat. 'There it is.' I thought as I walked over to it.
Seeing it jump off the table as I reached for it, it ran out where I came in. Following after it, I opened two doors, with me seeing the cat standing there. Grabbing it by the back of the neck, I looked where it was looking and saw a dead body, and judging by the looks of it, she had been dead for six months.
This, was the start of my true case.
