Crow padded back to the den as the sun slowly settled into the horizon, a rat swaying back and forth, with its tail in her jaws. It wasn't much, she knew, but no one would care. At least it was something, which is better than what most cats got. Crow was an amazing hunter as a kit, but with hardly any training, she hardly caught anything more than a the occasional shrew.
"Hey! Crow!" Her dad's voice rang out. She flipped around to see him racing towards her. How he still managed to be quick with so little prey, she had no clue. She waved at him with her tail, gesturing towards the den. She quickly walked in, heeding the stray wires. It was nice to have her own den, now, even if it was broken up.
Her dad followed her trail, and sat next to her.
"That's a nice rat. Where did you catch it?" He sounded suspicious. Her pelt felt hot.
"Near a TwoLeg dumpster." She bluffed. Jake, after seeing her fail to catch anything else for the entire day, had given her the rodent as a gift. She knew that if she told him, Jake would be in great trouble. BloodClan wasn't very welcoming to strangers, especially ones on their land.
He sniffed the creature, but if he had any further suspicious, he didn't voice them.
"Claw needs this. Her milk could dry up any day now." Even though Crow didn't like the molly, even she had to agree. Leafbare had been awful, so not many animals were around to have cubs. There were so many cats, and so little to go around, that any prey was helpful.
Both cats left the cage, the transfer completed. She hopped up onto the overturned dumpster nearby, gazing over everything. So many cats, sick, elderly, and young, it was a wonder that the group didn't collapse. Blood ruled with an iron claw, and life was miserable. Just then, a paw unexpectedly tapped her back, and she shot into the air, hackles raised.
She flipped around, bristling, and laid her eyes on the figure before her. The tiny kitten from earlier stood, shivering.
"What are you doing here?" She growled, still startled. He stammered.
"I-I just-" His shaking got worse. Finally calming down, she lowered her fur.
"I need somewhere to stay." He finally spat out.
"Then, you shouldn't look here. You're a young kitten, any TwoLeg would take you in."
"But, you gave me that mouse earlier-"
"So what? Did you expect more? There's already too little as is, kid."
"Please, I swear I'll find some way to help! I can hunt, a little!" His voice raised. She then found herself deep in thought.
On one paw, he was correct. He's young, so he'll learn. But on the other, if she gets caught helping him, it could spell doom for the both of them. On another, he was just a kit. He couldn't hunt for himself until well into next leaf-fall by the looks of it. She looked at his begging eyes and sighed, making up her mind.
"Fine. You can stay for a while. But, don't talk to any cat who you don't know, got that. BloodClan isn't welcoming to strangers," his eyes lit up, and he whispered a quick thank you, and she gestured to the cage with her tail, "this is my den. Do NOT leave it until I saw it's ok. At least, until I can make you look like a member."
She then went on to explain the system, and how he would need to lay low, if he wanted to stay. He quietly nodded to everything, just happy to have shelter.
"I'll just have to add some teeth added to you collar, the scent issue will solve itself. Hunting, however, is something entirely different. I'll have to start teaching you. Blood doesn't accept half-moon, motherless kits."
"I'm two moons, not a half moon!" He said indignantly, proudly puffing his chest out, but his eyes betrayed his true embarrassment. She grunted.
"Must be pretty small, then. What's your name, kid?"
"T-Tiny." He said in a small, embarrassed voice. His mother wasn't very creative, clearly. "I don't like it."
"Why don't we change it, then?" His eyes lit up once more. "Why not Frost? It'll match your eyes." He nodded again.
"Great, it's a good name." She looked at the sky. It was already dark.
"Just head to the den, there's enough room for both of us." He quietly blinked in understanding, before they both went their nest.
