I'm back guys! Sorry for the late update, been busy with a lot of stuff! But I kept wanting to get back to this. Trust me, it won't be abandoned. I hope you all like this chapter, and I intend to make the next one soon!
Also, please read the notes at the bottom!
"Ow! That hurts!"
"Well it wouldn't hurt as much if you would just sit still!"
Carly chuckled to herself as she watched Sam attempt to tend to Qrow's wound. Sam was quite experienced in the medical field and, after the battle with Tyrian, had immediately taken action to try and "patch up" Qrow.
There was only so much that could be done, however, as Qrow didn't know that he had been poisoned from the scratch. This fact repeated in her head and wiped the smile from Carly's face. As she watched Sam apply some sort of medical ointment to the slash Qrow had, Carly racked her brain for a way to suggest that Qrow could be poisoned without appearing suspicious.
As Qrow attempted to drink from his flask while Sam pulled out a tourniquet, Carly spoke.
"You know, if I recall, some scorpions can be poisonous, right Sam?" Carly emphasized.
Sam turned and gave her a nod, responding with just as much emphases, "Yep! It's important to keep an eye on how your body reacts to any injuries from animals! There are a ton of different toxins in animals and humans don't really have every antibody to recover from it."
Qrow lowered his flask and looked at both brunettes with a raised eyebrow before saying, "What does that have to do with anything?"
Carly's jaw dropped and she stared at him for a long moment, unable to believe that he didn't connect the dots that were pretty much displayed right in his face.
"Your scratch is—gaaahh!"
Without thinking about what would happen, Carly had tried to inform Qrow that Tyrian had used his venom on him. However, much like the tree branches had stopped her from "spoiling" the future to team RNJR, the smoke from the fire immediately billowed into her face. It was thick enough that Carly had to cover her mouth while she coughed up a lung.
Seconds later the smoke settled and went back to rising upward to the sky. Carly waved any remaining smoke around her as tears fell from her eyes from the sting of the smoke. When she could see again without blurred eyes, she saw everyone simply staring with amused, but tired smiles, outside of Qrow. He appeared to find her annoying, it seemed, as his face was one of irritated patience.
Sam was giving her a sympathetic smile and shrugged when their eyes met. She then went back to wrapping the tourniquet around Qrow.
Carly groaned to herself before saying, tiredly, "I just think we should keep an eye on your scratch, is all."
"Thanks, but I feel fine, so I don't think there's anything to worry about," he finished his sentence with a glare at Sam. Without looking at him, Sam pulled the tourniquet tight for a moment.
"Ow!"
"Sorry," Sam said nonchalantly, loosening up her grip.
Carly smiled gratefully at her friend as Qrow rolled his eyes and said, "Look, I appreciate you patching me up, doc, but my aura will have this little graze healed up in a few hours."
"I don't care if you have Captain America super human healing speed, it's better to be safe than sorry!" Sam argued, giving the ash haired man an unyielding look. Qrow frowned in confusion and started saying, "Wha—?"
"He's a comic book super hero," Carly filled in.
Ruby's silver eyes grew wide and sparkled with slight excitement as she turned to look at Sam, "You read comic books too?!"
Sam paused to smile at the younger female and said, "Yep! I have a ton back home!" A faint sad look flashed quickly in her eyes at the mention of home.
Ruby squealed slightly and said, "We'll totally have to talk comic books hero's when we get to Haven!"
Sam's look turned to one of nervous excitement as she replied in a similar tone, "Sounds like a plan!"
Carly knew that was going to be tough to pull off. Neither brunette knew what kind of comic books this world had, so Carly knew her friend was going to have to play the 'These-comics-were-made-only-on-my-island,' card. But at least they would be able to something pleasant to do with one another.
Qrow rolled his eyes, but a faint smirk could be seen on his lips as lifted his flask up to take another sip, muttering, "Great, another comic book geek." It was said in a kind teasing tone, so Carly felt no need to defend her friend.
Sam pulled the tourniquet tight again.
"Ow! Hey, come on!"
"Oops," Sam grinned as she went back to focusing on tending to Qrow.
As Sam continued to treat Qrow's wound, Carly noticed Ruby looking at her. She gave the red hooded girl a questioning expression, to which the young huntress responded by asking, "So, was that you who made the shields earlier? Those orange round things from before?" She referenced Carly's semblance using her fingers to indicate a circle.
Immediately Carly understood what she meant and said, "Oh! Yes, that was me. My semblance allows me to create shields almost anywhere. From what I understand, I can make them as big or as small as I want. I can also make them fragile or unbreakable, but depending on which I choose, it takes up more of my aura. For example," Carly paused, taking a small sip of water from her canteen, "If I create a small, slightly fragile shield, then it barely uses up my aura. But if I try to make an impenetrable barrier, then I run the risk of my aura running low fast.
"I'm still experimenting with it, so who knows if I might be able to do more with it and I just haven't figured it out yet," Carly finished.
The silence that followed afterwards gave everyone the indication that she was finished on the subject, so Jaune turned to Sam and asked, "What about you? What's your semblance, if you don't mind me asking?"
Sam was quiet for a moment as she finished putting the tourniquet on Qrow's body. She tapped his shoulder to let him know she was done before she stood up and spoke.
"Basically my semblance allows me to teleport things toward myself. If something is from a decent distance for me and I summon it to myself, it will transport itself to me. But the farther away an object is, and the heavier it is makes it require a bit more effort and time," Sam explained as she walked toward Carly and took a seat next to her.
"That sounds useful," Ren said.
After the battle with Tyrian and Qrow promising to explain everything to team RNJR, the others agreed to first find someplace to camp for the night. No one wanted to stay in Oniyuri, so they all chose to put off the much needed talk until they had left the town behind them.
They eventually made camp in the small woods not too far away, starting a fire and pushing some large fallen logs around it for everyone to sit on. It had only taken minutes for everyone to gather some firewood and use Dust to make some flames.
Now with darkness surrounding them, only put off by the glow of the flickering flames, everyone looked to Qrow, waiting for him to speak.
Qrow sighed, whether it was in exasperation or exhaustion, Carly couldn't tell. He began to tell everyone about the four maidens and how they possessed magical abilities without the need for an aura or Dust.
Sam and Carly already knew this fairy tale and how it was all true, but still listened quietly. During the explanation, Carly couldn't help but take the opportunity to gaze at Qrow.
The man definitely was still extremely handsome and Carly couldn't help but admire his muscles and other fine details that didn't really appear in the show back from her home. And his voice was one she could listen to for long periods of time.
But a dark thought entered Carly's mind, preventing her from truly enjoying being around the older male. She peeked at Sam out of the corner of her eyes, but her friend was too busy listening intently to Qrow's explanation to see her side glance. Carly hoped that at some point tonight she could talk to her friend about her thoughts. Sam was very respectable and most likely wouldn't bring up Carly's infatuation of the man anytime soon.
Once Qrow finished the explaining the truth about the four maidens, everyone was quiet for a long moment as they took all the information in.
The fire crackled as Qrow took a long swig of his flask. As he lowered it, he asked, "Really? No questions?"
"Of course we have questions," Jaune snapped at Qrow, his deep blue eyes glaring at the man. "This is just…a lot to take in," Jaune finished tiredly, turning back to the fire.
Carly couldn't blame him. Stuff like finding out fairy tales existed and were part of some big dark secret war would make anyone do a double take and question everything.
Qrow seemed to be thinking the same thing as he said softly and sympathetically, "Sure. Of course."
There was a long pause before Ruby spoke, looking distantly into the fire, "So these…maidens…They're powerful fighters that don't need Dust to use magic."
"Yeah," Qrow responded.
"And there are four of them?" Nora said slowly, shock all over her face.
"Yep. Always," Qrow nodded, looking at the ginger haired girl.
Ren questioned calmly, looking at the ground, "Which means that, whenever one of them dies, the power transfers to someone – a female – that they care about?"
Qrow raised his flask back to his lips as he responded by correcting, "Whoever was in their thoughts last. Important distinction," here he made a cautioned look, "Best option, it's someone we can trust," he indicated with a point of his finger.
"Regardless, their souls become combined, in a way," Qrow continued.
Carly felt her face cringe into a grimace. The thought of combining one's soul with anyone, especially someone like Cinder, didn't sound appealing. She wasn't sure she would like the idea of having that happen to her, regardless of if it meant her gaining a ton of power. She didn't know about Sam, but she was going to do her best to avoid even becoming part of the odds of receiving such power.
Jaune's voice broke her out of her thoughts, "And that's what you were trying to do to Pyrrha."
The blonde looked up and gave Qrow a dark look as he spoke accusingly, "The night the tower fell. You were trying to turn her into one of them."
Qrow stared at Jaune for a long moment, not denying his accusation, before he answered by saying, "The previous Fall Maiden, Amber, had been attacked. She was young, inexperienced. And her assailant, who we now know as Cinder, somehow managed to steal some of her power, but not all of it."
Carly bit her lip as she recalled the scene she and Sam had watched back in their world where Cinder, Emerald, and Mercury had ambushed Amber. Then had used what looked like a Grimm arachnid to absorb Amber's maiden powers. The whole scene brought goosebumps to Carly.
She also remembered being immensely satisfied when Cinder had been affected by Ruby's silver eyes. But that only lasted a short time when she realized that Cinder didn't die from the attack, but had become severely injured.
Quite frankly, Carly felt the dark part of herself wish that Cinder had died. The woman was awful and Carly hated her immensely for all the destruction and pain she caused. She didn't know how Cinder had become the way she did, and she doubted that she would ever know now that her and Sam were a part of the show. Still, Carly felt no compassion for the horrible Cinderella based character.
"We were afraid that if we didn't do something, the rest would go to her as well," Qrow explained.
"So you forced it on Pyrrha," Jaune growled, his voice harsher than Carly had ever heard it and his eyes brewing with anger.
"We didn't force anything," Qrow practically growled back, defensively, looking at Jaune. He paused, it seemed, to calm his voice, "We explained the situation and gave her a choice, and she chose. You were there, you heard her."
This didn't appease Jaune as the blonde turned around on the log to get up and walk a short distance away. It was obvious the poor boy was going through a lot of emotions with all the information he was given and how it tied to Pyrrha.
Carly wanted to walk over and comfort the young man, but knew he needed some space. Even though Carly didn't know Pyrrha like they did, she had adored her character and was devastated when she was murdered by Cinder.
Qrow rested his elbows on his knees as he leaned forward, before Ruby spoke, "That guy. Tyrian. Why was he after me?"
Carly and Sam shared a subtle look, knowing all too well why the mad man had tracked and tried to kidnap Ruby. If only they could tell the poor kids…
Qrow sighed before pointing at Ruby with his flask, "Well, you definitely painted a target on your back with what you did at Beacon. I told you having silver eyes is a rare trait. And the face that you're someone that was able to use them seems to have upset some very powerful people. Not many people know about the silver eyes.
"But those that do aren't very happy that one has surfaced. That's why I've been keeping an eye on you. In order to make sure you were safe," he paused to subtly land his gaze, as it had begun to wander, on Sam and Carly as his gaze wandered a bit. There was suspicion in his eyes, but before either brunette could react, Qrow turned to stare at Jaune's back, "All of you."
Ruby then asked in a slightly angry voice, "Well, then, why not just travel with us? It seems like that would've been way easier."
Before Qrow could respond, Jaune said, loud enough for everyone to hear, "He was using you as bait."
Everyone turned to look at Jaune, who still had his back turned toward the group, and Qrow immediately defended himself by saying, "Look, I wouldn't put it like that; it's…complicated."
Jaune whirled around at that statement and asked angrily, "What is all of this? Ruby's being hunted, the schools are being attacked, all for what?" his voice began to rise as his questions came faster, "What is the point of all of this? Will you just tell us what's going on?!" he finished with raising and dropping his arms in exasperation, practically yelling.
Qrow sighed again, groaning casually, "Would you sit down? You're stressin' me out, kid."
Carly gave Jaune a comforting smile as the younger man stomped back to his log and sat down. He folded his arms and gave Qrow a demanding glare that was both slightly intimidating and kinda adorable. Ren and Nora looked at their team leader with sympathetic expressions.
"Not many people are super religious these days," Qrow started.
'You should see our world. Religion is practically everywhere back home,' Carly thought to herself, as Qrow put his flask down.
"This world's been around for a long time, long enough that people have created dozens of gods. But if you believe Ozpin, two of them are actually real," Qrow explained.
The older huntsman then went about telling the tale of the Two Brothers, a tale that Carly knew by heart. She had read the RWBY fairy tale book that had been published back in her realm and had spent hours reading every little detail to see if she could find clues as to what would happen next.
She had to admit that she missed how the episode back home had used firelight illustrations to depict the story. But Qrow's voice was entrancing enough that she found herself giving him her full attention. He spoke of the beginning of humanity and the relics that the gods left behind, which resulted in the creation of academies and huntsman and huntresses.
"So yeah, there's that," Qrow finished.
Ruby voice broke the silent air as she asked, "Her. You mean Salem?"
"That's right," Qrow said despondently, "Not much is known about her and quite frankly, that's not what matters."
Carly felt her hands ball into fists as she thought about Salem's tale that Jinn would tell them in the distant future. The team needed to know the details about the witch, whether they liked it or not.
Beside her, Sam looked to the ground momentarily, biting her lip to keep herself from saying anything about Jinn or Ozma or truth about Salem. Carly felt her own voice in her throat as she struggled to keep her mouth shut about all the information she knew.
"What matters right now is that she wants the relics, and if she gets them, it's not going to end well," Qrow finished.
Carly bit her lip, all the future episodes she'd seen run through her mind once more. Despite wanting to believe that Salem would never get ahold of the relics, she knew that was a foolish wish. If there was one thing Carly knew about making a good story, it was that at some point the villain would achieve their goals.
And based on how this world worked and just Salem in general, Carly was terrified.
One of the reasons why I didn't submit a chapter sooner was that I was struggling with how to go about this chapter. At first I was going to make it similar to the episode, but at one point I just got annoyed with myself. I don't want to make this story a copy and paste of the show with only a few changes because it's got two new characters. So I started thinking of skipping to after the talk with Qrow and everyone's reaction to it. But when I was looking at how to edit it, I was having a hard time making that transition from before the talk and after the talk. It just felt clunky, and I was really happy with the beginning of the chapter so I didn't want to cut that out completely. So I ended up sticking with the episode for the majority of this chapter. But I promise that this story isn't going to be like that the entire way, that's not what I want to do. The next chapter takes place the same night after Qrow finishes talking. So I am sorry if you guys are disappointed with this chapter, I assure you it won't be a word for word story. Enjoy!
