*Drumroll*
I have updated a new chapter, Nodoka finally communicates with her daughter! So I know Nodoka canon in the series can use a sword due to Genma's promise. However, I don't see her doing the same to her daughter Ranko in my fic. But I do see her as a protective mother with traditional values with her child's best interest at mind.
I really see Asami and Nodoka being best friends but clashing, due to Asami being more modern and patient while Nodoka may expect marriage dates etc. But yes, Ranko and Nodoka finally being able to bond as family and living alongside Ryoga's family and readjusting to their life.
Please review and enjoy the fluffy feels
Ranko burst into the living room urgently, her blue eyes wide and bright, unshed tears of excitement and shock filling her eyes, she never thought this day would come. Her whole life ripped apart at the seems and everything felt as though it was moving too fast. Her whole body was shaking and she wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. She couldn't speak, she couldn't think, she didn't even feel hunger. Her body couldn't think about food, or sleep, everything was on red alert and she felt like she was full of electricity. All of her nerves and instincts were combating each other to figure out what she needed. She knew Asami had reached out to her mother Nodoka, wishing to reunite them, but she never thought it would happen so soon. She thought it would take months, maybe a year but not weeks. "Ryoga… my… I can't…. is this real? Holy shit!" Ranko babbled breathlessly. Ryoga blinked, averting his gaze to Ranko in concern, he hadn't seen her this on edge before. Sure Ranko had a lot of energy and she tended to express herself rather loudly. But he had never seen her so anxious, thrown off balance by something severe.
Asami sat opposite him with a cup of coffee smiling patiently at the redhead "Ohaiyo Ranko-chan, good news I hope?" she questioned. She appeared to have slept well and was in good spirits. But something surprising had occurred and clearly in a positive way, though she was having trouble expressing what the matter was. Since Genma had left her residence to live elsewhere, Ranko had begun to breathe easier, relax and lower her guard. No longer putting up walls and getting short tempered so easily due to her father baiting her all the time. She was acting as a normal teenage girl, which brought her so much joy.
Ranko flashed the letter in front of their eyes, holding it protectively as though it was the holy grail of letters. "Mum! she wrote me a letter!" Ranko blurted loudly, not realising the volume of her voice. Her mother had finally reached out to her, it had been so many years, she would have thought her mother forgot about her. She never knew what her mother looked like, sounded like, how old she was and just what she was doing with her life. Her time with her mother had been so short she had barely any memories of the woman. Compared to most teenagers her age she could never speak about her mother, due to the fact she was never part of her life. This was the first piece of physical evidence that she existed, that she was part of her life. That somewhere out there she had a mother who existed outside of her imagination.
Asami smiled warmly "It seems my communication with Nodoka has paid off, I told her you were residing here so she now has my address. If you do wish to communicate you can. I did send our phone number for further conversation" she explained. Her address had been troubling to find given Genma was secretive about his marriage and his wife. He pretended it never happened or that Nodoka was even part of his life. Like a dirty secret that he was ashamed of. Happily pretending to be a bachelor to flirt with whatever woman he desired while Nodoka remained in the dark of any of Genma's antics. Though when she was finally able to find the woman, she was relieved to find her efforts bore fruit. Ranko felt her lip wobbling, all her life she had held back tears, held back her feelings unless she was in private because Genma berated her on being a weakling crybaby. But she could no longer restrain the storm raging within herself, her emotions breaking free. Asami had done so much for her, she'd helped with her Neko-ken, she'd helped her with Genma, now she finally had a branch to her mother. She felt her hands trembling, staring down at her mothers writing, wondering what her mother had to say. She couldn't bring herself to open it, her body fighting two separate desires, for it to remain secret and a mystery, or to finally have the relief of knowing what could have been and what would be.
"Ranko?" Ryoga questioned in concern, he could see she was hesitating but this was everything she had ever wanted. A healthy relationship with her mother, the one parent who loved her. He didn't know if Ranko would choose to live with her mother, or if Nodoka would move out of the family home and live with them, but whatever happened he wanted her to be happy and have that choice. Ranko had been at the mercy of Genma's mistakes all her life, she was never able to live life on her own terms. Now she finally had that chance to be free of his control and make her own decisions.
"Gomen…. I… I can't stop shaking" Ranko muttered shakily, her body seemed to have no control, her mind reacting to her anxiety. Everything coursing through her in waves as she tried to control herself. Trying to make sense of what was happening and prepare herself for what was to come. She should be happy, she should be dancing on cloud nine yet she was filled with such fear.
"Take your time dear, I suppose this will be rather shocking for you. Given Genma separated you for the nearly two decades" Asami reassured her. Finally getting to know her mother, being able to speak to her, to know her, it would be a strange feeling. Someone so personally connected to her who had remained a ghost or a whisper all her life. To finally be able to cross the bridge and mend their broken bond, it would be a strange feeling. Ranko took a deep breath, ripping open the letter slowly, allowing her eyes to roam the words, absorbing each letter into her mind.
My dearest Ranko, my beloved daughter
How pleased I am to finally be able to send you this letter
I do hope your memories aren't too vague
For the last time I laid eyes on you, my child you were but an infant
I am deeply saddened that the mistakes your father caused forced us to be apart for so long
I am relieved to know Asami-san is taking care of you
I will be pleased to call her a mother-in-law
With these details, I will be able to communicate more efficiently and more often
I have so much to say to you, yet I cannot find the words
Just know I love you
Love Mama
(Ps here is my number so we can speak in person)
Ranko felt as though her whole world had frozen, the barrier which Genma had created all her life that left her childhood a brief memory had now began to crumble. The ability to know she didn't have to hide from her mother anymore brought her such relief. Tears of relief filling her, she couldn't make them stop even if she wanted to, knowing her mother never stopped thinking about her all these years. Genma had denied her of the knowledge that her mother never had a choice in letting her go, hoping for the moment she would see her child again. Waiting for the day she would come home, an empty home devoid of her family. Genma had ripped her child from her arms and dragged her around the world to train, pressing onto her that family and love were distractions from being a martial artist. Such a coward that he never thought to return to her for visits, but now she could call her mother or write whenever she wanted. Making the distance easier. The tears spilling over and pouring down her cheeks, holding the letter close to her chest, wishing that she had been able to speak to Nodoka sooner. Knowing she could have tried to run away or even figure out her address somehow made it harder. The letter was so simple, so brief and yet shared nothing about how her mother was doing, yet she felt so happy to know her mother still cared. Only making her wish she could see her all the more.
"Ranko?" Ryoga panicked, he could see she was trembling and on the verge of tears. He didn't know she would respond like this, wondering if this had been a good idea. He wanted to do whatever it took to comfort her. She had to have been a mess, all of her feelings pouring out of her, wondering what the letter had said. He'd seen Ranko cry more than enough times because of Genma, so his instinct was to assume she was crying because of something negative.
"H… Heiki….I… I'm just happy" Ranma sobbed, she knew she was making a scene but she couldn't help herself. She felt like the severed ties to her mother caused by Genma had finally been repaired, she never thought this would be possible. She'd forgotten that you could cry from happiness, that you could feel so utterly whole that you couldn't stop the tears. No doubt she would have puffy eyes after crying this much, but somehow she didn't care. Asami smiled, enjoying the touching moment as it unfolded before her. This was a deep moment for Ranko, life changing and something she would remember for the rest of her life. She was glad she could bring this closure to Ranko and allow her to finally her maternal family. The mother she had been neglected of, the woman who birthed her, the woman who remained a stranger to her was finally back in her life. She must be moved beyond belief, she finally had a loving parent back in her life. God knows Genma never had a parental body in his life and was the epitome of a selfish man-child who sulked and complained about every little thing in life when nothing went his way. He was an awful role model to Ranko but perhaps her mother could step up to the plate.
Ryoga got to his feet slowly, reaching out to ruffle Ranko's head affectionately, sensing her soften underneath his touch. Due to the fact that Genma had never been the affectionate parent type, he took great joy in spoiling her with as much love as humanely possible "Yokatta, you must have missed her a lot" he smiled. Ranma peered up at Ryoga through tearful eyes, her blue eyes shining like a mirror. He'd done so much for her, accepting her Neko ken, staying with her all night when she reverted. He'd always been there to help pick up her messes, sort through her problems and bullshit. He never got jealous, he trusted her and he never judged her. He was the nicest person she'd ever met, why couldn't more boys be like him? She was crying like a baby and here he was comforting her, smiling back at her with those big brown eyes. She flung her arms around him tightly, pressing her face against his body, sobbing with joy as the tears soaked his shirt. If not for him, if not for Asami, she never would have reunited with her mother. Ryoga blushed, not expecting Ranko to hug him suddenly, her soft body pressing against him and her shampoo smelled so nice. Remembering now just how small and short she was compared to him. He awkwardly wrapped his free arm around her to soothe her, he was still getting used to touching her affectionately. Stroking her hair as she cried, remembering how his mother would do the same when he would cry as a child. Asami watched the two in silence, sipping her coffee as they shared a touching moment.
"WHAAAAAT! You got a letter from your Okaa-san?" Ukyo yelled in surprise. She knew this was something deeply important to Ranko, a moment she had been waiting years for. Never knowing if her mother was still alive, if she had moved house, forgotten about her or even wanted anything to do with her. This had to be a truly emotional moment for her. She wished she could be there in person to share this with her, to offer moral support and hype her up about what was to come. Ukyo made the adult decision to leave home and start her own business, while her uncle kept an eye on her, but still communicated with her parents to update them on her life. But she had always been fiercely independent and preferred her personal space compared to Ranko who never had that choice.
Ranko winced slightly but smiled, her eyes still puffy from crying so much, but she felt so relieved and content. She never thought she could experience such a thing as crying and for it to be a positive experience. So many times she had cried from anger, resentment, frustration and loneliness but never from such joy. She felt excited, something unknown and surprising was happening in her life, yet she was eager for it. She wanted it to happen, showing no fear, compared to how she felt about Genma. "Hai, Asami-san got in contact with her some time ago. I finally got a response from her, she even left her number".
"That's huge Ran-chan! Now you can speak to her, god you must be nervous" Ukyo babbled. She was sending all of her prayers and wishes to Ranko, making sure nothing got in the way to deter this from happening. Nothing and no-one would ruin this for her best friend if she had anything to say about it. This was something Ranko deserved, she was owed, her childhood was ripped from under her and now she could get some of it back. She could feel herself shaking, all of her feelings for Ranma's situation pouring through her at once, but she tried to remain calm and rational. She wanted to hear all about this, hell, she would be there beside her best friend every step of the way. She wouldn't let her face this alone, she would be sure to watch out for Ranko every step of the way.
Ranko twisted the phone cord in her hand nervously "Mmm, I dunno, I was always worried she would have forgotten about me by now" she laughed awkwardly.
The phone went quiet for a brief time
Ukyo took a deep breath, she had anticipated this was how Ranko would feel. All of her negative traits and emotions that had grown inside of her due to Genma would be pouring out at once. But she would never be unloved, unwanted or hated by anyone, sure she wasn't perfect but she wasn't a bad person. Ranko deserved love as much as anyone. "Ran-chan, I know how scary this must seem, your estranged mother is now part of your life. What if she isn't like the woman you imagined right? You're scared and confused, your poor head is running a mile a minute. But if your mother is anything like you and how she wrote that letter. I bet she can't wait to meet you" she reassured her friend. She would be on edge, feeling jittery, trapped, wanting to escape, trying to figure everything out. Someone who had remained a secret all of her life was finally being given a face and a name. What if she didn't meet up to Ranko's expectations as a parent?
Ranma smiled, as always Ukyo always knew just what to say, she sensed Ranko's moods and concerns and shared her intellect and wisdom with her. Sometimes she forgot they were the same age due to how independent and resourceful Ukyo was at times. No doubt come graduation, Ukyo would hit the ground running and do well to adapt to adult life. She was the best friend a girl could ask for, knowing she would always have Ranko's back. She felt this was selfish and she was asking so much of Ukyo already, but she needed her now more than ever. "I um… I'm going to try calling her but… if… if she chooses to visit. I… would you… could you…." she babbled. Ukyo had a resteraunt she needed to take care of, she had bills and an income to prioritize, she was a student. She had plenty of issues in her life that needed attention and Ranko respected that. She couldn't keep begging Ukyo for favours when her life was a mess.
"Of course I'll come baka! You're like my little sister Ran-chan, I won't let you face this alone" Ukyo huffed. Ukyo would never deny that her business meant the world to her, she had created it all on her own and worked hard to earn her reputation as a chef. But Ranko was her family, someone close to her whom she had known all her life. Ranko needed her help and like hell she was going to ignore her during her time of need. She would run head on into this and make sure Ranko got through it. Ranko never needed to worry about asking her for anything, that was what best friends were for.
Ranko smiled, as always she could turn to her best friend when she needed her most. Knowing that despite how fucked up her life had been, she still had people she could trust. The walls she had put up all these years were lowering, thanks to the new family she had built and repaired. "Arigato Ucchan, it means a lot" she hummed, hanging up the phone.
"YOU DID WHAT?!" Genma yelled in outrage, he had enough problems in his life that he was already trying to escape. His marriage to Nodoka, the Chinese Amazons who wanted his head after he visited their village with Ranko as an adolescent. His master whom he hoped was still in confinement, all of his mistakes he never hoped to be reminded of. But now the woman of whom he made a deal with to train Ranko was re-entering his life? He'd hoped to put that behind him and somehow raise Ranko into a decent fighter while enjoying the quiet life away from his responsibilities. If Ranko remained chained to her mother she would become soft, selfish and bratty, he didn't want to deal with that. Ranko had enough attitude directed at him, if Nodoka came into the picture she would only get worse.
"Ranko received a letter from Nodoka-san after I reached out to her and shared our family number with her. Now Ranko can speak to her mother whenever she so wishes, I do believe they may plan a reunion" Asami responded. Genma wouldn't ruin this for Ranko like he had every other moment in her life, she finally had something meaningful to look forward to. It would make the distance easier and Ranko could now visit whenever she wanted. She could form a life outside of Nerima and breathe easier. She was reconnecting with old roots from her past that would unlock memories and allow personal growth in which she had been denied for a large part of her life. She couldn't wait to hear all about it, making sure things went smoothly for them both.
Genma felt a shiver run down his spine, remembering why he had severed ties to his past and why he continued to run. Though he had been popular in his youth, Genma had never seen himself settling down. However, he realised that he needed an heir to continue his family in the future, allowing the line to continue. Finally accepting the peaceful life in which he had never known during his student years. He had married Nodoka shortly after getting rid of his master with Soun Tendo many years ago, blessing the heavens for gifting him with such a wonderful woman. Though their courtship had been anything but easy he was determined to marry her which he did, but being a naive younger idiot he had ignored any complexities that followed. He later met and married Nodoka and she bore him a daughter, Ranko, one of the happiest moments of his life. But something that irked Genma was the attention Nodoka vented towards her child in unnecessary amounts, how his dreams and wishes greatly deterred from what his wife had in mind. Nodoka doted on and spoiled her child immensely, forever carrying her, kissing her, playing with her and rarely talking of little else. Telling Ranko stories and life lessons, while teaching her child of what was to come once she grew up, wishing for her to become a proper young lady. Often helping Nodoka in the garden by finding flowers, bugs and getting messy which Nodoka found endearing. Often getting injured due to her accident prone nature and childlike innocence, to which her mother would laugh and simply patch her up. However, as Ranko became a toddler, she took an interest in spending time with Ukyo, a tomboy, someone from their local neighbourhood. Ukyo was very attached to Ranko early on and often visited their home or played together before separating for the night. As the two got older, they formed a bond, a clear trust and affection blossoming between the two.
Genma attempted to have another child with Nodoka, a son to carry on the line, aware Ranko didn't have what it took to be the heir to the Saotome school. All of the lessons Nodoka was teaching her didn't align with what was expected of a martial artist and the strict training regime. But Nodoka didn't wish for another child, she was content with being an only child. So he was forced to train Ranko to take on the Saotome school after him, there were no other options. In doing so he went travelling taking his toddler daughter along with him, she needed to see the world and learn all she could if she was to ever surpass him and make him proud. Remaining coddled by her mother would never allow her to become someone he could take pride in. Nodoka never forgave him for taking Ranko away from her, her heart was broken at her motherhood ending so quickly. Begging Genma to reconsider and abandon the Saotome school. However, he wouldn't hear of it and demanded that Nodoka see common sense and the pressure he was under. He never knew what became of Nodoka upon his departure but he did miss her, but he contacted Nodoka sending her letters and pictures whenever possible. Up until Ranma turned fourteen in middle school, before she moved to the same high school as Ryoga, he stopped contacting her to focus on Ranko and her future engagement. He married Nodoka due to her resemblance to Asami in some ways, merely her hair was brown instead of black. She was a stunning young woman with a passion for life and a kind heart. She was a proper lady and had a good education and trained in the arts of bridal duties and was an amazing housewife. He couldn't have asked for a more perfect partner, but she wasn't without her flaws. Though he loved Nodoka, the way she doted on Ranko would make her soft, without Nodoka in his life, he was free to make his own choices.
Asami frowned at Genma, her eyes cold and unsympathetic "I'm aware you married Nodoka shortly after you escaped your master years ago. She greatly resembled me in our youth, which was cruel of you, using her as a scapegoat. She was too good of a woman for you. But she is Ranko's mother and you have no right to keep them apart" she scolded. Asami had married her husband out of love and true devotion to him, while Genma had settled which was cruel. She didn't pry into his distastefully colourful past but that was his business, but he had no right to continue to involve Ranko in the matter. Nodoka deserved better and Ranko deserved better, he would no longer control their decisions. Genma withered, the sharpness of Asami's tongue cutting him into a million pieces, making him feel smaller and smaller. "I do hope she takes full custody of Ranko and can raise her child, whether she sells your old home and moves here permanently or Ranko moves back with her. She belongs with her mother and you will have no further contact with Ranma if I have any say in the matter" Asami snapped. Ranko deserved a better life than the one she had known for the past seventeen years, a healthier one with less trauma and stress. She had a mother who had the appropriate maternal nature to raise her child and show her the love she clearly craved. Allowing them to build a life together devoid of Genma's negative influence.
"She… she's my daughter, my kin, the heir to the school. You can't keep her from me!" Genma protested. He could legally find a lawyer or some other court of justice that would allow him to act as a guardian and legal carer for Ranko. She was his responsibility and it was his job to make sure she became the perfect martial artist. They couldn't keep him from his daughter.
"You took a two-year-old from her mother, took her gallivanting across half of Japan and then China on a training mission. Behaving recklessly and even at times using her as a bargaining chip and later causing her psychological trauma reflected in her fear of cats. That alone will keep you from her, she is more my daughter than yours" Asami reminded him. He had taken a vulnerable adolescent from her mothers loving arms and traveled with her in hopes of teaching her to become a martial artist. Yet lacked the common sense to see how damaging his teachings could be to her. Apathetic to her pain, suffering or trauma, defending his mistakes as lessons. Ranko had blossomed more as a young woman and a martial artist through her methods than in all of Genma's years of supposed training. Ranko clearly trusted her and it was shown through her gestures and Neko Ken. Genma whimpered, he knew better than to argue with Asami, it was like tempting death itself. The same battle aura she had harboured since her teens was as terrifying as ever, pure animal instinct. Asami was a stronger fighter than himself, possibly the only woman capable of rivaling Happosai. She had trained her son herself which showed in his own impressive aura and skills. "I do believe I told you that you were to find another residence to stay unless this is a visit Genma. I do believe you are trespassing" Asami warned. He was pushing his luck repetitively and though she had restrained herself thus far, she would need to teach him a painful lesson to better make him understand.
Genma swallowed, when Asami threatened you it was never an empty one "Just… please place me in a favourable light with Nodoka, she was always too good a woman for me" he muttered. He was already treading on thin ice with Nodoka, he couldn't bring himself to speak to her in person but Asami would be able to help. He only needed that much of her. Nodoka was a strong woman, she was a capable woman and she had been left behind. How she hadn't filed for divorce or legally separated from him yet was beyond his knowledge but he was grateful for it.
Asami smiled coldly, it was rare Genma admitted to his mistakes so she would revel in this moment. Being able to remind him of it should he deny it later on. "That at least you can admit to" she scoffed, Nodoka had deserved far better in husband prospects. But had she never married Genma, Ranko never would have been conceived. Thank god for the small mercies in life.
Ranko gripped the handle of the phone like a vice, the note including her mother's number staring back at her, like some form of cursed scriptures that she dare not speak aloud. She couldn't keep avoiding this, after all it was what she had longed for all these years. Controlling her breathing and trying to steady her nerves, she could do this, she could do this. This was nothing compared to half the crap Genma had dragged her into over the years, why was she freaking out about a piece of paper? Yet somehow her body couldn't stop shaking, her hand were trembling and her heart was hammering in her chest. She felt sick with anxiety, her body on red alert as though she was running head on into danger. She closed her eyes and then began to punch the number into the dial on autopilot, gripping the receiver tightly as she heard the phone ring. Would her mother answer? What if it ended up going to voicemail meaning all along it was a waste of time she never should have even considered. Was she even home? She was bound to have her own life just like Ranko, she could have friends or plans. What if she was asleep? God what if she woke her up this late? She closed her eyes tightly, waiting for a voice to respond.
"Konbanwa, Saotome residence, Nodoka speaking" a female voice responded
Ranko froze, reality finally kicking in yet she felt as though she was dreaming. Her mind going blank, everything she had prepared to say suddenly fell apart and she could find no words.
This voice
This person
This was her mother
She had a voice like honey, so warm, so comforting, so gentle, she could feel herself relaxing as a net of security began to form around her making her feel safe. She could trust this person despite having never met them, no malice or manipulation was evident. Proper, formal and yet so polite, this was the woman who had given her life. She didn't know if she could do this, what if it was a hasty decision and she was just running blindly into this without consideration? She looked to Ryoga for help, pleading with her eyes, begging for an answer of what she should do. He smiled back at her and nodded, a silent response of understanding and support, encouraging her to keep going at her own pace. "Konbanwa, um…. I'm…this is Ranko speaking" Ranko stammered bravely. The line went quiet for a while, the hours passing by painfully slow, time stretching out into eternity while Ranko chewed her lip. Waiting for her mother to say something, anything. Just to respond to her. Before she heard the woman gasp and it sounded like she was crying, the sound of relief in her voice made Ranko's heart soar. This had been a good idea after all, Ukyo had been right all along. Her mother did want to speak to her, she still loved her and she still wanted to be part of her life.
"Ranko, is… is it really you?" she sobbed
Ranko felt her lip wobble, she was trying to put on a brave face but it was too much for her to cope, she felt like this was a dream come true. She felt like she was messing up so badly, stumbling over her words and trying to make sense of it all. She wanted her mother to know the truth, how much she loved her, how much she missed her and how much she had wanted to meet her. She'd always felt like the strange kid, the one who lived nomadic, the one with no mum and an unreliable father, but now she had a chance to be normal. "H… Hai, I… I got your letter" she stammered.
"Oh Ranko, I never thought this day would come. For years I've hoped I'd find you" Nodoka wept. She'd kept count of the days until Ranko's birthday, her age, how long she had been away, all of the precious memories she held dear. Hoping and praying for the day they would be reunited, now her wishes had come to fruition at last.
Ranko felt her eyes welling up with fresh tears, how could she have been so stupid to believe that this would end badly? How could she have ever suspected that she would be abandoned. Ukyo had been right, she was her mothers daughter and they were more alike than she believed. She was right, her mother still loved her, she hated Genma for keeping them apart all this time. His fear, mistakes and selfishness had robbed Ranko of knowing her mother, unable to accept that he had made a promise he couldn't keep and refused to face Nodoka. "Mum… I…." Ranma began, where was she supposed to begin? She couldn't find the words, it was as though she forgot how to use language or speech.
"Are you well, what about school? Have you taken classes for bridal training? Are you eating well?" Nodoka pestered
Ranko swallowed, she had expected a barrage of questions eventually but she didn't know where to start. Hell, she had been prepared for the future her whole life but never on her terms. Only now that she was free of Genma's control did she have a say in anything about her personal life, but now her mother was involved. She had no idea of what to expect of her mother, what sort of thing would make her happy. She had no idea of how to respond, but maybe if she took this slow she could handle it. "School is good, I'm having a lot of fun. Me, Akane and Ukyo all hang out together a lot it's great. Mrs Hibiki is a really good cook and she lets me help out in the kitchen sometimes" Ranko babbled. There were the obviously annoying rowdy students who caused trouble, Kuno her personal stalker, and the teachers who bored her to death. But she enjoyed being able to eat lunch with Akane and her friends, but now she would have Ukyo to turn to as well. Being able to have that breath of fresh air in her life when she felt stressed was amazing. She was just rambling now, trying to reassure her mother, but it felt so good to share these things with her.
"I'm relieved to hear that, I had no idea of how your education was coping with Genma dragging you around the country. I was so worried you would be bullied or worse. I'm glad your getting home economic education and bonding" Nodoka sighed in relief. She'd attempted to home school Ranko during her childhood, but she had missed out on seeing Ranko attend school and share these things with her. Wondering just how long Ranko would be able to reside in a school due to funding and even Genma's ability to cause trouble wherever he went. She knew Ranko would never have an easy life so long as Genma was involved.
Ranko took a deep breath gripping her hands into balled fists, her heart hammering in her chest "I… the thing is mum I… I want to meet you, see you. I was hoping we could, I don't know… coffee…. Mrs Hibiki has plenty of spare rooms if you want to stay with us a while" Ranko suggested. She never wanted to be apart from her mother again, she'd been missing from Ranko's life for long enough. Asami would take care of everything, she would be sure to help Nodoka settle into their lives without an issue. She just wanted to make as much time for her mother as she could. She gripped the phone, waiting for her mother to reply, the silence was killing her and every time it occurred she felt her nerves eat away at her.
"I… I don't want to impose, are you sure Mrs Hibiki won't mind?" Nodoka asked. She'd done enough as it was from her letters, helping Ranko attend Furinkan, housing her and Genma, taking care of personal matters, feeding and clothing her daughter. She couldn't thank her enough, she felt as though she would be taking advantage of her kindness by showing up out of the blue to stay in her home.
Ranko smiled, she heard reservation in her mothers tone due to panic, but she could tell she wanted to come. Her mother would never let her down, she wasn't that kind of person. "Not at all, if she can handle pops I'm sure she'd find a new guest a breath of fresh air" she joked, Asami would be sure to make Nodoka feel welcome. Nothing could go wrong and they wouldn't have to worry about Genma messing anything up ever again.
She heard a fond hum over the phone from her mother, just hearing her speak made Ranko feel as though her skin was tingling. She felt so close to her mother already, that bond everyone talked about she could feel forming in her soul. The loving affection shared between a mother and her daughter, the desire to nurture and protect. "Very well, I shall book a train for Nerima tomorrow, I shall locate us somewhere to meet and you can tell me everything then" Nodoka agreed. She would have a lot of details and baggage to bring with her and make sure the house was secure, the journey would be tedious but the weight in worth would be priceless. Ranko smiled and hung up the phone, her face ached from smiling and her whole body felt like she could fly to the stars and back. This still felt so unreal, she was going to meet her mother, she was going to finally reunite with her family. Every hurdle she had faced until now, a life without a maternal figure to guide her through life.
"You ok? You're shaking" Ryoga asked in concern, she'd been rather on edge while speaking to Nodoka as was expected, but her anxiety was something he worried about. He knew she would be overthinking and processing a lot but he would be here if she needed to talk. She'd been so happy when she got the letter and though he barely heard what was said through the phone, respecting Ranko's privacy, he could only hope it had been positive. She'd sounded happy but he knew Ranko could fake being happy when she wanted to hide something.
Ranko flung herself at Ryoga, hugging him tightly "Yatta! Ryoga I did it! I was able to speak to my mum! She still remembers me! She's coming here to stay with us!" Ranko cheered. If he hadn't been here to encourage her she never would have had the courage to make the first step. She was one step closer to learning what kind of person her mother was. She couldn't wait.
"So, you have requested Ukyo adjoin you to meet with your mother," Asami asked, she knew Ukyo was a close friend of Ranko and she would be of great moral support to her during this time. Ranko had no reason to feel she had to face this alone, showing fear and reservation was a normal response. She'd overheard Ranko talking to Ukyo over the phone and from what she knew, Ukyo had a lot to say. She'd become a large part of Ranko's life and a familiar face in the Hibiki home, Asami was pleased to have a surrogate niece-in-law in Ukyo. She was a positive role model to Ranko and someone she could rely on.
Ranko nodded, Ukyo never allowed her to face anything alone if she had a say in it. "She's moral support and she's practically family, I'd appreciate her being there" she explained. Ukyo had helped her through every hurdle in her life, she was nothing without her. If she needed head-space and a place to stay, Ukyo's door was always open, a free meal when she was down and someone familiar to joke around with. Ukyo was also a female martial artist with whom she could train with if she needed another sparring partner. Ukyo was something safe, something familiar, someone who kept her grounded.
Asami hummed, reflecting on how their life would be changing in the future. Nodoka would soon be becoming a single mother herself, giving them something to discuss. Wondering what kind of hobbies Nodoka had accumulated during her husband and daughters absence. "It will be refreshing to have your mother stay with us. It would make a nice change from the layabout fool she married". Having a helping hand aside from Ranko around the house would be delightful, meaning Ranko would have more time to focus on bonding with her friends outside of training and schoolwork. As much as she appreciated her son and daughter-in-law being helpful, she wanted them to have time to themselves too.
"Does… does she know about our engagement?" Ryoga questioned hesitantly, it was inevitable that the subject would be brought up eventually. He'd hated that Genma was his father-in-law, but Nodoka as a mother-in-law didn't seem so bad. At least he would have someone related to Ranko that he would be able to get along with. Though they were planning on delaying it until they had left high school, when they were mature enough to consider marriage and how it would balance their lives. Nodoka may have other ideas and hope they would be married through college perhaps. Neither of them needed that pressure on their shoulders.
Ranko blushed, she'd been so nervous she never even considered bringing it up "No…. I didn't come up, I know she'll find out eventually but…. If she's a traditionalist like pops, she'll pressure us about marriage…" she muttered. Genma had never shut up about it, ever since she was little he had pushed it onto her that she would take over the school someday in his place and would be married to a fiance. It was a mantra she could never forget and at times had felt more like a curse than a blessing. She was glad to be marrying Ryoga someday, a person she truly loved and cared for, but they wanted to do so on their own terms, was that so wrong?
Asami sighed, understanding the frustration between the two teenagers, while she nurtured the blossoming romance between her son and Ranko, she didn't wish to push them out of their comfort zone or pressure them. Ranko was only just adapting to having friends in her life, breathing without Genma looming over her shoulder. She didn't need to be babied or bullied into marrying her son as soon as possible. Maybe Nodoka would be more compliant than her husband, hoping she would see reason and understand Asami's opinion. "I shall speak to her on the matter, I'm sure she is a reasonable woman" Asami reassured them. Ranko shifted, she knew she was expected to take on the family line once she was older, but marriage was part of the bargain. But just how responsible did they expect her to be at seventeen years old? She was still training, she was still learning, her journey wasn't over yet. As the male patriarchy in the future, Ryoga would be expected with a lot of responsibility. Nodoka would test Ryoga no doubt, seeing if he was any good for her child. All mothers wanted to know their child would be in safe hands come marriage, but she just hoped she approved of Ryoga and wasn't too harsh on him.
"You don't think she'll pressure us to get married after we graduate do you?" Ryoga shivered, fear evident in his tone. The crippling expectations that came with running his family dojo and school were something he wanted to do with pride. But he was nowhere near great enough to feel like he was worthy of that title. He still wanted to experience further education and travel the world a little before he became a husband to Ranko. His mother was a good mentor to him, but he had a lot of life experience he wanted to involve himself in, he knew Ranko felt the same way. She wanted to be able to balance her life, find herself and make peace with the people her father wronged or who had been left behind and forgotten about. She wanted to become independent of her fathers control and have some say in the choices she made. She wanted to further improve her training and figure out her life.
Asami sighed, she hated to admit it but she had a feeling that may be the case. She could perhaps delay the conversation or convince Nodoka that matters of the heart couldn't be rushed. "Ryoga, as my only son I place my faith in you to take on the Hibiki school in the future, however I would rather you gained further education first. I don't doubt you'll need other careers in your life. The same with Ranko, you have your own identities outside of being our heirs" she soothed. Ryoga had always known of the life he would lead taking over the school someday, given his mother currently maintained it until he was ready to take on the mantle. But his mother had always made sure that Ryoga was prepared and taking his lessons in his own time. She wanted them to have normal lives, identities and hobbies outside of being the heirs to the school. Ranko breathed a sigh of relief, his mother always knew just what to say, just what he needed to hear when advice was deserved.
Akane, Ryoga, Ukyo and Ranma sat quietly on a bench and grab some snacks to nibble on to calm their nerves. Watching the world go by with a sense of self reflection and acceptance. They had decided to meet up and discuss the big life changes Ranko was experiencing, the moment in which you met an estranged parent was a life changing moment, someone whom had been missing for most of your life suddenly returning. Someone new, someone different, a new member of their close circle, a new face that would become part of their lives. Ranko rarely spoke about her family life but everyone knew who her father was, though Ranko tried hard to deter the conversation away from him whenever possible. She never spoke about him in front of classmates and always got annoyed when someone pressed the matter when she wasn't comfortable. Genma was known for being a cowardly problem maker who dragged his child into his mistakes. He had a bucket list of people he had wronged in his life and would never be able to repay the debts he had stacked up. But worse at times Ranko was guilty by association. However, her mother was someone important to her, she was someone who had never wronged Ranko, someone who had always loved her and had her best interests at heart.
Akane sipped her tea reflectively, her eyes wide with surprise and understanding, she'd known Ranko for over a year and considered her a best friend. She made her feel less self conscious about being a tomboy and shared her passion for the martial arts. She could tell Ranko and Ryoga had become closer than the last she had seen him, the way they looked at each other, their body language. She knew they had something to tell her and she wanted to be open-minded, she didn't know who this Ukyo girl was, only that she was attending their school this year. But Ranko was familiar with her and if Ranko trusted her, then so would Akane. Ranko gripped the cup of hot chocolate sat in front of her, poking the marshmallows floating atop her cup, imagining them as fluffy clouds above a milky chocolate ocean. Hoping to find the strength to ask them for help, she'd always been raised by her father that weakness and support from friends was shameful as a martial artist. Figuring out the words that remained entangled in her brain, this was the scariest thing she had ever done. Telling her friends about her mother, but also her severe phobia of cats. Everyone had a fear of something, but there would always be those jerks who found her phobia funny. "So, do you have a date to meet her? You swapped numbers right?" Ukyo asked abruptly, she could see Ranko was struggling so she would break the silence and take charge. Perhaps by easing Ranko into the conversation she would feel comfortable about talking about it.
"Meet who?" Akane asked suspiciously, Ukyo obviously had an inside understanding of what was going on yet she was keeping it to herself. Ranko had asked them here for a reason and she didn't appreciate being left out of the loop. She was as much a part of this as anyone, so she wanted to do her part. They had made plans which clearly involved Genma and she wanted to know what was going on. She respected Ranko's privacy and there would be personal matters she didn't feel comfortable sharing. But if she could handle a moron like Kuno, she could handle whatever it was that Ranko was getting herself into.
Ukyo smiled awkwardly, she knew Akane attended the same school as Ranko and clearly knew about her crush on Ryoga. She'd done well to look out for Ranko before they were reunited which she was grateful for. Akane seemed like a nice girl and she hoped they could be friends in the future, since she was new here it would be good to meet new people. "Sorry, this is all going to be a lot to take in, since you don't know Rancchan that well" she babbled. Due to her growing up the countryside she had rather a strong accent which was hard for residents of city's like Tokyo to understand. But since she grew up around Ranko, they would be able to communicate rather easily compared to communicating with others. She was just so adapted to falling back into old habits with Ranko that she forgot to be sociable, though she didn't admit it, at times she clung to what was familiar due to getting anxious around new people. Akane raised her eyebrow, wondering what Ukyo was attempting to say here. Was she threatened by her presence? Didn't she trust her? Did she see her as an outsider or feared she would take Ranko away from her? Though those feelings were understandable she didn't know what she had done to possibly offend her.
Ranko sighed, she could sense the tension and it was best to be truthful just to avoid any awkwardness in the future. "Akane, this is Ukyo Kuonji, Ucchan and I have been best friends since we were kids. She's attending Furinkan for the spring. Thanks to my old man when I was training, Genma separated us, this is the first time we've seen each other in years" she explained. She knew Akane tended to be hostile around new faces that seemed suspicious or antagonistic, she had an equally fiery temper herself but had a good heart. She didn't want Akane to get the wrong impression, Ukyo was equally as protective over her as Akane would be. They had a lot to catch up on and Ukyo needed time to settle into a new city while growing roots.
Akane scoffed, did Genma have no shame at all? She could understand why Ukyo would be so clingy now, she'd been apart from Ranko for years and finally had her best friend back. How lonely it must have been without her would explain why she was so close to Ranko. She hoped once Ukyo settled in they could become friends too, she seemed like a nice girl "So…. Ukyo knows your mum?" she asked. Wondering if she could ever ask Ukyo about Ranko and what their childhood was like.
Ukyo fingered her drink awkwardly "Kinda, I know of Ranko's mother, mostly from letters and stuff. I never met the woman in person due to Genma leaving home when Ranko was two. But she's a lovely woman from what I know" she explained. She knew that Nodoka was a kind and nurturing woman, a good housewife and a decent cook. She'd never had the chance to visit Ranko's home so she never got the chance to meet her. There was a lot of Ranko's personal life she was closed off from due to how secretive Genma was and how she only ever saw Ranko away from home.
"So he just been keeping you apart for years?" Akane snapped? How was that even legal? He had no official custody over Ranko and was forcefully keeping Nodoka away from her daughter. Just who in the hell thought that was ok? How had someone never called the police, why hadn't Nodoka sent someone to search for her daughter to bring her home? Did he have no shame? She could understand now why Ranko had such difficulty talking about her mother, she was still a toddler when she was taken away from home. The brief memories she had of her mother would have faded over time. Knowing that made her feel such pity for Ranko, how hard it must be for her.
"My mum knew Genma back in school and about his marriage to Nodoka. She's used some connections to get them back in communication. They now have phone numbers to talk with each other and write letters. My mum is planning on letting her stay with us for a while during their reunion" Ryoga explained. Genma had been crushing on his mother for years, but he was a known flirt and womanizer according to his mother. Genma was always chasing after a pretty face and clearly forgot about his wife. But his mother knew how to stand up to Genma and was someone he feared immensely, proving how much stronger she was as a martial artist. He was already banned from their home the same as Kuno, so every time he sneaked back he was trespassing. She had put a lot of effort into helping Ranko and loved her as her own.
"Guess it really is who you know these days" Akane hummed, she could only imagine how grateful Ranko was to Mrs Hibiki for all her kindness. With the rise of technology it made communicating and research so much easier than it had been back when their parents were young. If not for her help Ranko may have gone her whole life without ever having met her mother at all.
"You got that right hun" Ukyo scoffed, having connections made life so much easier to deal with. Thanks to her uncle and her father, she was able to get decent deals on ingredients for her cooking shipped over. Sometimes she got care packages from home too, being able to call and write allowed the distance to feel easier. Having lived out in the country, all of the technology that was so common here was something she slowly adapted to. But it was indeed a useful tool in her everyday life.
"So, you and Ukyo are going to meet your mother together? Do you want to meet up with us after?" Akane asked kindly. This was a private and personal moment for Ranko and though she wanted to support her, she respected that she may not belong in the situation. Meeting Ryoga's mother was one thing, but meeting Ranko's mother was a different matter entirely. They would have a lot to talk about and a lot of personal matters to unload. If there were sensitive subjects being brought up, surely it would be between Ranko and her mother. She didn't want to intrude in a personal conversation she wasn't welcomed in and make things awkward.
Ranko shifted and nodded "We can all meet up at Ryoga's house for dinner, I'm sure Asami wouldn't mind guests and Nodoka can meet everyone" she suggested. Her mother would undoubtedly be tired from the journey across and she would want to relax as soon as she arrived. She wanted to make sure her mother settling in went smoothly. She didn't want any unpleasant surprises or problems that may occur during her time staying with the Hibiki's. Asami loved having guests and familiar faces being around would ease her anxiety. If she felt uncomfortable she could rely on her friends to make it easier.
"Be nice to have someone other than your greedy homewrecker of a father over for once" Ryoga snorted mockingly. All Genma did while he was residing in his family home was get drunk off his ass and sleep till late, complaining about his hangover and age despite getting himself into said state and expecting everyone to clear up after him. Eat most of their food, wracking up expensive bills and never paying for a single thing he replaced. Shamelessly flirting with his mother despite her lack of interest and clear hatred for him, then berate Ranko for her mistakes yet never admitted to any he had made. Genma was a pitiful excuse for a parent and a man, he was weak, lazy and selfish, expecting to be waited upon and lounge around. How he had ever befriended his mother he would never know.
"Tell me about it, at least Ranko inherited her looks from Nodoka" Ukyo scoffed. Even during his youth Genma had never been a looker and she had the photos to prove it. Ranko had inherited a few traits from her father but purely due to the fact she was raised by him all her life and he was her only role model. In terms of appearance, Ranko was the spitting image of her mother and even Genma had mentioned it more than once. Ranko was most likely already popular at their school and it wasn't hard to see why. However, Ranko seemed disinterested in a relationship with anyone aside from Ryoga, which was understandable. She'd been manipulated all her life by a man and it would leave her with severe trust issues.
Akane reached across the table to grip Ranko's hands reassuringly, her poor head would be swimming right now. But she would be able to get through this and make it out the other side. "It'll be ok Ranko, we'll be here to support you and I'm sure Nodoka will be overjoyed to see you". She'd lost her own mother during her childhood which left a hole in its place, heartbroken at the loving mentor she had lost. How she missed her mothers cooking and her gentle smile. She was slightly jealous of Ranko for still having a mother, but pitied her for being separated from her. She could understand the conflicted emotions this would trigger. This was a new part of her life, returning to a part of her past long since repressed and hidden from her, so many doubts and questions would be swimming through her mind. She had every right to feel this way, this was her way of coping.
Ranko gripped Akane's hand in return appreciatively, she was trying and she knew Akane was raised by her older sister and father after the loss of her mother. She would be able to relate to her feelings in a way and was trying to comfort her "Arigato Akane" she mumbled. Having someone who understood her feelings at least in some way meant the world to her. It made her feel less alone, that she wasn't being childish for feeling the way she did.
Nodoka sat by her window, gazing at the photo of her toddler daughter as she stroked the glass pane, her small cherubic face and big blue eyes, her long red hair bound into two braids on either side of her head. The light of her life and the best thing that had ever come from her marriage to Genma. Remembering the day she became pregnant with Ranko, scared, excited and happy, finally able to bear a child and experience motherhood. Caring little if her baby was born male or female, so long as they were healthy. Her daughter had been merely a child when she was ripped from her arms, having only just birthed her child at home 2 years prior, her child was still very reliant on her for protection and nurture. A wide eyed child of innocence, curiosity and untainted by the cruelty of the world that adults were well aware of. Enjoying being a mother and bonding with her daughter, the bright smile and utter joy that filled Ranko's eyes when they were together.
Ranko had been a very curious, rambunctious but happy child, so full of love and energy. She loved to get into trouble and mischief, forever trying to hide when she made a mess or did something naughty. Though her actions were never out of cruelty but childhood naivety and mistakes. An appetite like her father and a love for the world around her. However, Genma would berate Ranko for following Nodoka around, clinging to her and crying, saying she needed to learn independence and to grow a strong heart that would allow her to stand up to anything. That a crybaby who used others for protection would always be weak and stupid. Soon after he chose to begrudgingly take Ranko away to train her into the family heir, despite Nodoka clinging to her child, Genma ripped her from Nodoka's arms after knocking her down. Running out of the front door with their child and leaving for a training trip. Nodoka never got to say goodbye to her child nor had she ever wanted to, forced to live alone with the mere memories she treasured. Aside from letters and some pictures, Nodoka never knew what became of her daughter, if she was healthy, happy, what her hobbies were and what kind of teenager she became. Now fifteen years later she finally had a solid address in which her child was located and means to contact her, she knew where her child was, she was within reach and she wasn't constantly moving around the country. Hearing her child's voice over the phone broke the dam within her, the tears spilling down her cheeks as her heart broke yet ached with love. The love she harboured for her child and would continue to feel for the rest of her life, an unbreakable bond between a parent and child. Knowing she had been robbed of the chance to raise her child due to her spiteful husband, a time in ones childhood that only happened once. But now she could make up for those years by finally being able to see Ranko again and make up for lost time. She just prayed Ranko didn't hold any resentment towards her for what occurred.
Ukyo wound her into Ranko's as they skipped down the street, Ryoga ambling along beside them with his hands in his pockets, he was more than used to the fact that Ukyo got super clingy when she was around Ranko. Not that he was ever jealous, he knew Ukyo and Ranko shared a different kind of bond that he would never try to come between. Ukyo smiling brightly as she clung to her best friend, her blue eyes as warm and endless as the sky above them. "We need to find you something nice to wear for seeing your mum, maybe style your hair a little. I'm going to need to look out something other than my work gear" Ukyo chuckled. Ranko needed to wear something casual but dressy to make a good impression on her mum's visit, make a little effort. Even she though she preferred to wear a shirt and shorts was going to find the nicest clothes she owned for Nodoka's visit.
"Could you help with the cooking Ukyo? My mum might need extra hands?" Ryoga questioned, she was a really skilled cook and knew her way around a kitchen. With all the stress of preparation his mother would appreciate a companion. Ukyo had become such a commonplace in their household it only felt right to ask her for help. She was very similar to Ranko in many ways which was how they became so close, he just hoped someday Ukyo found someone who cared about her as much as he did Ranko. Given Ukyo lived here all by herself, the warmth of his family home may ease the homesickness she may be experiencing.
Ukyo winked, she already loved Ryoga's mother and she found a comfort in a maternal figure after being so far away from her family. It was nice to be around someone who didn't judge her for being a tomboy. "Sure thing sugar, and call me Ucchan, I mean your going to be my brother in law someday" she smiled. Ryoga had a good heart if not somewhat socially awkward and hotheaded, as shown by how protective he was over Ranko. But he was family now and that would make him her brother in law. So he was going to have to get used to calling her a nickname and becoming a close friend. She knew that he would always be on Ranko's side and look out for her safety, which was more than Genma had ever done for her. He was her security and she appreciated that. Ryoga's face darkened, though he appreciated the nickname, he would have to get used to it, for now it was remaining Ukyo.
"I just…. I can't believe it's even happening" Ranko babbled. Years she had spent dreaming of this moment, being a small child under her fathers care and always harbouring a jealousy towards those who were able to see their mother. Daydreaming of a life where her mother was involved, where she never felt loneliness. Now her wishes, her dreams, her fantasies of that life were becoming reality. She wanted to pinch herself as many times as she could before she realised this wasn't her losing her mind. Shock was truly a frightening thing, the way it changed your perception on everything, how different the world became because of it.
"We got your back Rancchan, Genma won't ruin this for you" Ukyo reassured her, wrapping her arms around Ranko to hug her. Genma had taken enough from Ranko over the years, ruling her choices in life based on his decisions, now Ranko could choose for herself. He wouldn't keep manipulating Ranko to avoid her mother, making the rift bigger. Genma had many mistakes to make up for, but he wouldn't be causing any more in the future, not any that they would know of anyway. "I wonder if she can do martial arts too, I mean your mum can but you never spoke about your mum often enough" Ukyo hummed. Ranko came from a prolific family of anything goes martial arts, using anything and everything in their ability to wield it into a fighting style. A very diverse form of fighting, but did Nodoka wield a similar sort of power or was she just a normal housewife? There were so many questions of what kind of woman she was.
Ranko shrugged, due to how insane and problematic her father could be, having a normal, mundane mother sounded amazing. Just an ordinary parent who never came with any enemies, no setbacks, no problems and no deals gone wrong. A parent with no unpleasant surprises who just wanted to nurture her. "I have no idea, pops never mentioned her so she could look like or do anything" she sighed. As a small girl her mother sounded like a princess who wore an apron with a cooking utensil in her hand from the way her father spoke of her cooking.
"She sounds like a respectable person, her style of writing insinuated she got a higher education level. Meaning she's intelligent, but she could work anywhere" Ryoga reflected. She was very well spoken from how she addressed Ranko in the letter and by her manner of speaking over the phone, traditional was right. She carried manners and was a very kind person. But that didn't determine what career path she had chosen in life, but no doubt she was out of Genma's league. But his mother would somehow get to the bottom of it, she always did somehow, which was a benefit to have on your side.
"Smart and pretty no doubt, just like Rancchan" Ukyo grinned, like mother, like daughter as the saying went. Nodoka had to have her way of coping with Genma all these years for their marriage to have remained so strong. Genma had a wary attitude when she came up in conversation meaning he was afraid of her. Which only raised further questions as to what she was like. But she had to admit Nodoka had to have passed on her genes to Ranko.
Ryoga hummed, he was starting to enjoy having another female friend in the group. He'd been born an only child so having sister like figures such as Akane or Ukyo in the group was a comfort. "You're more than welcome to stay over Ukyo, it's late and my mum has a spare room now that we kicked Genma out" Ryoga offered. The idea of her spending time by herself constantly caused him to worry about her, she was a teenager like themselves forced to act like an adult. To be able to act her age and goof off with them had to be fun. Their house had always been too big even after Ranko moved in, so Ukyo becoming a resident on the regular was no issue for them whatsoever. If you weren't welcome in the Hibiki household, it was made well known.
Ukyo smiled "Sure thing hun, I have to pick up some stuff though" she thanked gratefully, she couldn't keep scrounging off Asami's kindness, she needed to bring clothes, food and other things she may need. She was already living like an adult so she may as well act like one too. She loved experimenting with food and she would love for Asami to test some of her recipes. Besides, when she was nervous Ranko always tended to stress eat to comfort herself.
"Thanks for letting me stay over Mrs Hibiki, I hate to impose" Ukyo thanked, bowing politely at the front door as she removed her shoes. The poor woman had to get bored of her face appearing in the doorway on the regular. While she enjoyed being able to visit her house, surely Asami had to be taking care of the dojo, training her son and being a mother. She had all this responsibility piled on top of her, now she was babysitting herself and Akane too. She would do her best to behave appropriately while she was a guest in the home, making sure to be as helpful as possible. Sometime she would have to ask Ranko for a sleepover at her small flat, that way she could act as a host to Ranko and give Asami some peace.
"Nonsense Ukyo, you're a close family friend to Ranko and it's a delight to have you. I'd love another helper in the kitchen and from what Ranko has told me you're a skilled young chef" Asami praised. She had only ever had one child in her life, so being able to find surrogate daughters in Ranko, Ukyo and Akane was something she took great pleasure in. Her home had a newfound sense of warmth and comfort to it which was once plagued with silence. She knew Ryoga had been lonely too, so to have new friends in their home would be entertaining. She was eager to try Ukyo's cooking and enjoy having new faces in her home to liven it up. Ukyo's cheeks flushed pink from the praise and she beamed back at her, she rarely got praised by anyone who wasn't a customer on her cooking. So for Ryoga's mother of all people to compliment her meant a lot. "Take your things upstairs dear and take a nice hot bath. Then we can discuss dinner" Asami reassured her. Ukyo nodded politely before making her way upstairs to the spare bedroom to leave her belongings, a light skip in her step as she did so.
"Thanks again for this Asami, this means a lot" Ranko thanked her, she hadn't seen Ukyo this hyper in a long time. The way her face lit up when Asami complimented her cooking skills and allowed her to stay, she was internally screaming for joy. Knowing she had been accepted by Ryoga's mother. She could finally be around her oldest friend in a place she felt safe, she could feel comfortable, she could be herself. She could escape the previous stresses in her life with the people who meant the most. She didn't know how she would ever be able to repay the debt that Asami had done.
Asami hugged Ranko warmly "You've had a long day Ranko, the letter, calling your mother, making plans, this must be an intense situation for you. But I know things will go well and I'll be here for moral support, we all shall" she soothed. She could enjoy a hot bubble bath before dinner if she wished, to help her ease her mind and body into relaxation. If she wished to train before dinner she could, it would build her appetite. Whatever made her happiest she could do, as long as she wasn't late for her meal. Ranko eased into Asami's embrace, even though she had never been held by her mother, somehow she felt that it would be as calming as Asami's affection. "Now, Ukyo will be using the bath first but you can go after. Go help her unpack and take things easy until I call for you" Asami responded.
Ranko couldn't hide the grin which formed on her face "Arigato" Ranko nodded before dashing upstairs, her bright red hair bobbing behind her. Ryoga watched Ranko dash upstairs with a bright smile and he felt his heart was melting, seeing Ranko so boundlessly happy warmed his heart. The childlike innocence that danced behind her eyes, mixed with pure joy, enthusiasm and mischief. This is how she should always feel, especially without Genma around to ruin it all. He couldn't wait to see the woman Ranko would become when they were older, how beautiful and strong she would grow to be, the woman who would become his wife.
"Ah, youth, to see you so beside yourself is truly adorable" Asami teased. Ryoga's gaze was always focused on Ranko, whether she was in the room or not, following her everywhere she went. The way his eyes lit up, the fondness behind them. The passion that filled him, it was clear to see. Not many found their soulmate at such a young age, it was a rarity, many found theirs at different moments in their life. Ryoga had simply happened to find his, mirroring how Asami and his father met. She didn't like to intrude on their relationship, allowing them their privacy, but occasionally teasing them was fun.
Ryoga's cheeks darkened, almost forgetting his mother was there for a second "Mum" he muttered bashfully. Knowing his expressions that he wore when Ranko was around were becoming so obvious to others, caused him to become embarrassed of just what he may look like. He knew his mother would never make him uncomfortable, but seeing her tease him in that motherly way did make him embarrassed. He knew he could always talk to his mother about anything without judgement, but sometimes there would be teenage things that he just wanted to keep to himself.
Asami chuckled, reaching out to ruffle his head affectionately "You remind me of how your father used to act before we married, stumbling over his words. Yet he was so kind and honest" she smiled. The overwhelming emotions that lay within his heart, so passionate and powerful like an unbridled storm. Yet those feelings were so difficult for him to express aloud in words. Seeing how much her son resembled his father at times was both endearing and heartbreaking, a sense of pride that he had his fathers spirit and yet mourning what she had lost. He was a good man, that fact alone gave her hope of the husband Ryoga would become to her someday. The thought of what her husband had missed due to his passing of watching his son grow was deeply hurtful, the memories and moments he had been robbed of.
"Dad… he was bashful too?" he asked, he had never really asked much of his father over the years out of embarrassment and guilt, only the few stories his mother had shared. He'd seen some pictures, keeping plenty around the home. He knew his death had caused his mother a great sadness, his death had broken her heart. But knowing he had inherited his father's shyness made him feel less awkward about his inability to communicate. Like Ranko he had been robbed of a bond with his father, which is why he resented Genma for being a poor excuse of a father in law. Wondering of what kind of man he could have looked up to had he not passed away when he was so young.
Asami smiled "Everyone in our class thought him a fool, even Genma made fun of him. But his endearing kindness and honesty of showing his sincerity were endearing to me. During valentines, I made him a gift and thereafter we dated" she confessed. Her husband had been a studious person much like their son became, just as bashful and awkward as their son too. But it was a trait she admired of him, knowing he would always respect Ranko and treat her well. When everyone else in their year had mocked her husband for being a social outcast without a sense of social clique. Asami had been drawn to him, the peacefulness that was found in his company brought her so much peace. She had chosen Ryoga's father that day and never looked back, knowing he was her future.
"So, did dad train to be a martial artist too?" Ryoga questioned, wondering what his father's technique would have been like. Though he couldn't deny that the story of how his parents met was cliche but he loved that, how sweet and adorable it was. That his father had been the person that never fit in and everyone ostracized. Yet his mother saw his worth and fell in love with him, showing her sincere heart. Was his father the type of man who could have run the dojo too had he not passed away?
Asami giggled "Very much so, at least after high school, during he was more defensive attack than offensive. While I was always the stronger fighter, your father admired me for it. The art style you inherited is mostly my own" she smiled. His father had never sought out a fight, unfortunately trouble had a way of finding him instead. But his attack style was always one that diverted trouble and injury away from himself. Never taking part in a fight but instead facing his opponent and blocking attacks that came his way. While later Asami was able to act as his protector, facing trouble head on and guarding him from whatever jerk happened to want to harass him.
"So, my battle aura is…" Ryoga gasped, everyone who had ever encountered his mother had always said she was an intimidating woman when angered. Her aura was powerful, dangerous and unmatched. He'd never known what kind of aura he had, only that people were wary of it, to know he had inherited his strength from his mother made him even prouder as a son. He always loved praising his mother and boasting about her when he could, but always in a positive way. But knowing her power was directly passed onto him made him even prouder.
"Like mother like son," she winked, from the day he was born she knew Ryoga had inherited much from her. His attitude, his strength and determination, but mostly his skill at fighting. She could never feel prouder of the son that would take on the mantle after her. Though his aura was strong, it was imbalanced due to his emotions and lack of focus due to conflict. But she knew someday when he was able to focus, find balance and control his emotions more level headed, he would no doubt surpass her someday.
Ryoga hummed, the saying of learning from your parents couldn't have been truer in this moment. Being able to understand himself and his parents on another personal level. "So, Nodoka, you said Genma married her due to your similarities. Did you two ever meet in person?" he asked. He couldn't help but feel curious as to what the relationship was like between the two women, if it was ever awkward or unpleasant. Was it always looks or was it personality traits too? Though it angered him that Genma was such scum that he chose someone else purely for her resemblance to a woman he once crushed on. He could never have his mother, so he chose a woman who was the next best thing.
"I met Nodoka during my time in college after which I became pregnant when I left. Nodoka met Genma during his student years as a trainee, however, she was a kendo student and a hospitality student. We became close after their engagement but years later we never spoke again" Asami explained. Nodoka had been a strong fighter and efficient with the sword, though she gave it up to provide for her family and focus on being a mother. But she was someone Asami respected and harboured her own powerful aura. However, Nodoka never resented Asami in any way, despite knowing Asami was the stronger fighter. Ryoga hummed, realising how many connections he had over the years to Ranko's family was rather intriguing to consider.
"So you wore a boys uniform in middle school too Rancchan?" Ukyo laughed, they were so alike sometimes it was scary. She'd never felt comfortable herself in the whole mini skirt, sailor uniform style that all the other girls in her year had. She preferred the comfort that came with the boys uniform while adjusting it into her own style. Knowing Ranko felt the same way was comforting, though due to this they had been mistaken for boys when they were younger, at least until puberty kicked in. She wished that she had been able to attend school with Ranko during their early teens, it would have made her feel less lonely in the school she eventually attended.
Ranko shrugged "Still do, it's more comfortable and girls uniforms are so annoying. I still did in middle school with Ryoga, he thought I was a boy too until I got my boobs" she grinned. She'd never cared about what people thought of her in that sense, whether she acted like a boy or it confused people, she was just being herself. Boys never gave her a second thought until puberty kicked in then it got awkward. Genma got annoyed by it but knew better than to harass her for it, as it only ended up with his ass being kicked. The teachers gave her judging looks and some students whispered behind her back, but it never bothered Ryoga in the slightest. Even after he found out she was a girl, the way she dressed never bothered him.
Ryoga blushed, reflecting on their memories as middle school students was always embarrassing for him. Thinking about what an ass he used to be and how he'd behaved. "How was I to know? You didn't act anything like a girl and I didn't find out until later" he defended. Ranko had been the epitome of a tomboy, loud, troublemaker, always joking around and pranking people. Stealing snacks, lazing about and keeping to herself. She had a lot of people she got on the wrong side of but always beat them in a fight, people had crushes on her but never approached her. Very few knew Ranko was a girl due to how well she had hidden it. Not even Genma told people she was a girl for a long time.
"How did you find out?" Ukyo asked curiously, this was a story she had to hear about. She had issues concealing her gender for a while as she got older, but soon it got easier. Soon she managed to find a wrap for her chest to keep them in place, but over time she became more comfortable with her gender. She wasn't ashamed of her femininity, nor her sexuality, she just preferred being herself and dressing semi masculine. She may not have been the picture of femininity, but that didn't make her any less of a woman. She was sure Ranko felt the exact same way, but how did Ranko's secret get discovered before people learned she was a woman?
Ryoga blushed, it was a mixed-gender school but dress codes weren't strict so if someone wanted to wear their uniform differently nobody cared. But the basic gendered ones were normal. Due to her mannerisms and behaviour, everyone thought Ranko was a boy, even himself. "I um... one time me and Ranko were sparring, we were fourteen at the time and Ranko had a bad habit of snatching food. I got really mad at her and wasn't aware of my own strength. I heard this loud rip and all of a sudden Ranko was blushing. When I looked down I saw her chest and well... everything pieced together" he babbled. He'd offered to buy her a new uniform and asked if he hurt her at all, he'd turned as red as a tomato and lost all ability to speak. He forgot all about yelling at her for stealing food or being unfair. His mouth had become dry and his vocabulary had been exchanged for mutters and babbles instead of coherent speech. They had stared at each other for a painfully long time, Ryoga slowly piecing together that Ranko was a girl and he'd embarrassed her in public, instantly releasing her and apologizing profusely. Ranko had been somewhat embarrassed about her chest being flashed to a guy, but appreciated that Ryoga apologised, looked away and even respected her personal space.
Ukyo smiled "Wardrobe malfunction? Geez, you're stronger than you look Ryoga" she chuckled, imagining how that went down. Luckily she never had anyone lay their hands on her unless they wanted to get in a fight. Unfortunately as puberty hit her chest stopped being flat and she inherited a sizable bust which made it harder to hide so everyone figured it out. But she could imagine knowing Ryoga's crush on Ranko how awkward it must have been to go through that situation.
Ryoga blushed, he'd been too stunned for words and freaked the hell out about it, going into a state of shock that worried even Ranko who was still pissed that he'd seen her boobs. Covering up as fast as she could, her face matching her hair colour and looking like she was about to cry while an expression of embarrassment and rage took over her. "I... I freaked out... I... I couldn't believe it but... my mum would have been disappointed if I didn't apologize to Ranko" he explained. His mother had always told him to respect women and treat them right, meaning Ryoga was never a jerk to women, polite, well mannered and helpful. For the longest time she never knew why Ryoga didn't get any dates during his time prior to Ranko. But then realising her son was the romantic type, once he fell for the right girl he would be smitten.
"Ryoga helped me fix up my uniform, he's surprisingly good at handiwork, he even skipped school with me. He even took me out for lunch and was super nice. I owed him big time but pops pulled me out again before I could thank him" Ranko sighed. He'd given Ranko his jacket for extra layering while he patched her shirt back to normal and fixed her button. He'd then decided to leave class as he couldn't leave her be in a sulky mood and concentrate after what happened. He pretended to be sick and spent the afternoon with Ranko trying to cheer her up and make friends with her. But before anything could happen between them, Genma pulled her out of school before she could express that she was attracted to him.
"God, Genma ruins everything" Ukyo sighed, just when Ranko experienced her first love and someone who might make her happy. Genma dragged her off on another wild goose chase, tearing her away from Ryoga and any happiness they could have had. But they could make up for lost time and they had clearly become closer since then. But hearing of how they met was truly an adorable story and she couldn't stop smiling about it.
"That was around the time I chose to have you both engaged. I mean it was clear Ryoga liked a girl and Ranko was so cute she was a clear choice" Asami chuckled. She remembered Ryoga stumbling home in a daze, his cheeks flushed and unable to focus. He picked at his food and was mostly unresponsive, which was a sign of love. She had eventually asked him what her name was and he told her the whole story. Due to her past relationship with Genma as classmates she clicked onto who Ranko was. Later arranging a marriage between the two via communication with Genma. Much like herself and her late husband, Ryoga met his soulmate while he was in school. He met Ranko under awkward and strange circumstances but realised that she was the woman for him.
Ryoga blushed, reflecting back on how foolish he had been when he was younger, yet aware that he had simply not known better. He'd had feelings for Ranko but repressed them due to not knowing she was a girl. Not wishing to make Ranko uncomfortable or cause her to get bullied merely from his actions. But upon realising she was a girl but simply a tomboy, his crush blossomed, he was able to relax more around Ranko and even realised he loved her. Her smiling face, her cheeky expressions, the curious expression she would wear whenever he zoned out, even after she left, before reuniting and attending Furinkan, he knew she was the one for him. Between the time before what led to their engagement currently, he'd been confessed to by numerous girls even dating Akane briefly. But nobody could compare to Ranko, realising he'd fallen for a feisty redhead with big blue eyes.
"Aww, so romantic" Ukyo teased, he'd picked a fight and ended up feeling bad for embarrassing her, then made it up to her leading to a friendship and crush. He'd bonded with her and was bitten by the lovebug hard which later formed into mutual love. But before he could confess Ranko was separated from him and led to heartbreak. If not for Asami using her past relationship with Genma and her contacts to him, their romance may never have blossomed. She herself had never found her crush yet, she hadn't found a guy or a girl who made her life feel worthwhile. But she hoped that someday she would meet a person who fulfilled her life as much as these two.
"Ucchan" Ranko hissed, her cheeks darkening. She reflected on how immature and stupid she had been towards Ryoga in their youth, defensively hiding her gender due to her father's desire for a son. Upon her secret being found out she panicked that Genma would flip and she would lose her home all over again, but instead Ryoga kept her secret and even became her best friend. Later she developed a fondness for Ryoga and found she truly cared about him, becoming saddened when she had to leave him behind too. She'd become adapted to stealing food or grabbing meals fast due to competing for food against Genma who always assured he was fed first and Ranko second. Even if it meant stealing someone else's, you weren't fast you didn't eat. Though it was a habit she later discarded thanks to living with Asami and her family, for a long time it was second nature to her.
"Any other cute stories of these two lovebirds I should know about?" Ukyo grinned, she wanted all the gossip and stories about their past. If Ryoga was supposed to be her lover, she wanted to be sure that Ryoga would take care of her. Knowing all his dirty little secrets in case she had to hold it against him for being a jerk. But more so she just enjoyed hearing about the life Ranko had when they were separated, all the life experiences and memories she missed out on.
Ranko shifted, there was so much she needed to offload onto Ukyo she didn't know where to begin. Reminiscing about her past was harder than Ukyo was aware of at times. Ryoga knew she was a tomboy, he knew she didn't like girly things, she didn't like makeup, hated dresses and she hated being controlled. She would never be the epitome of femininity but he loved her anyway, knowing she never had to pressure herself into being a fake version of herself. Her daddy issues, given they shared a mutual hatred of Genma and Ryoga had lost his own father. Her brief separation from her mother, her trust issues, her bisexuality, even her Neko form "I… um…." Ranko babbled. However, the same way Ryoga kept her neko form under lock and key, never uttering a word to anyone, she had sworn secrecy over his Neko form.
Asami took a deep breath, she protected her sons curse for the past three years already, and she would continue to do so until it was cured. However, though Ukyo was Ranko's best friend, this was an important secret that could never be uttered to anyone she couldn't trust. The ridicule, the embarrassment and the struggle that Ryoga faced due to his curse deeply affected him, feeling less of a man and ashamed of what he became. A small helpless, cowardly creature that despite being faster was lesser in strength. Relying on his mother and Ranko even more in order to survive before he could revert back. "Ukyo dear, how do you feel about pigs?" Asami questioned in a serious tone. Ryoga shivered and Ranko stiffened, their gazes averting to Asami with an expression of confusion and panic.
Ukyo blinked, wondering where the sudden change in conversation "Uh pigs? I guess pigs are ok, I mean I mostly use them as an ingredient sometimes" she asked in confusion. Growing up in a country town she was comfortable with farm life, nearby livestock and using pigs as a cooking ingredient. They were cute and came in all forms of breeds and types. However, she didn't know why her opinion on the creatures was suddenly so important to Asami. Wondering if this was a joke on her behalf or something.
"What I am about to reveal, is personal information and very important. It is of great importance nobody aside from you and perhaps someday Akane know of this" Asami responded. She had always put her son's wellbeing first and foremost, keeping him away from school or any possible trigger that may cause him to revert into his curse. Be it rain, a thunderstorm, accidents in the kitchen, anything to do with cold water. Ranko happened to learn by accident and had accepted him without hesitation. But Ukyo was still an outsider in that sense, she had no idea of what she was getting into. It was rather strange to believe, but life was unpredictable and mysterious in that sense.
Ukyo blinked, Asami's expression had become serious, her gaze never faltering, she wasn't kidding. She knew better than to get on the wrong side of Asami Hibiki, given she was a fiercely protective mother and a skilled martial artist with an intimidating battle aura. "I swear on my Pa's life" she swore, her father had raised her to be the best version of herself she could be. He made sure she had good language, never cursed, well educated and skilled in the kitchen, he just wanted her to be happy. He would be disappointed in her if she never kept a promise and hurt people who were good to her.
Asami smiled, turning to Ranko "Ranko dear, please be a dear and get me a kettle of hot water and some cold water" she responded. She could worry about towels later and she would make some hot tea to warm up her son after to assure he wouldn't get sick. Ranko shifted before agreeing with Asami, hoping this wasn't a mistake, gripping her hands into balled fists.
Ryoga sat with a kettle of warm water beside him and a bucket of cold on his other, he'd managed to avoid transforming all this time out of luck and repetitive avoidance to triggers. The last time he transformed it was an accident and so far he'd managed to avoid doing so again, to change now by his own will felt strange. Mentally preparing himself for the reaction that was bound to come with the form he was about to reveal. Ukyo watched with the wide-eyed curiosity of what was about to unfold, like a small child watching a Saturday afternoon cartoon run on the television. Ryoga took a deep breath, feeling his anxiety spiking as his hands began to tremble. Wondering if this was a good idea, if they should just pretend it was a joke and avoid the subject altogether. But his mother raised him to never be a coward and always be true to himself, fear was a natural response, but feeling shame of something was optional. This was his most precious secret, even Ranko finding out had been a surprise for her, but she accepted him without judgement. Ukyo was an outsider despite being Ranko's best friend, this was a big deal for him, if she so much as blabbed to anyone about this he would be screwed. The mockery, the intrusion and the lies people would come up with would be endless. He gripped the bucket of cold water, dumping it over his head without hesitation, feeling his skin tingle as his body began to shrink and his form change. Soon a small black pig crawled out from beneath the bundle of clothes, adorning a black and red bandanna that resembled Ryoga's. His brown eyes peering around the room at the people now watching him. The piglet sniffed the air before crawling towards Ranko who scooped him up and held him to her chest affectionately, rubbing his head and kissing his nose.
Ukyo stared in disbelief, Ryoga had just turned into a pig, was she dreaming? Had she eaten something off earlier? Was this real? She'd thought Asami might be joking at first "Nani? A…. a pig… what the hell?" she babbled. Humans couldn't transform like this, not without some form of magic, wasn't this sort of thing buried in folklore? Part of her wanted to laugh this off and ask where Ryoga was hiding and what the hell was going on.
"Many years ago, during a training mission in middle school, Ryoga went to China to mature himself for his future marriage to Ranko. However, he became lost and fell into a cursed spring there. The curse locked him to revert into a pig form whenever cold water touches him. Though I am still seeking a permanent cure, my son still retains this curse" Asami explained. She had asked the owners of the springs about the legend of the cursed spring of drowned man, the one that would lock her son back into his birth gender. Allowing him to no longer revert into his pig form and remain a normal human. Doing every amount of research in her grasp to obtain the answer, but so far no permanent solutions had ever come up.
Ukyo stared, wanting to pinch herself just to make sure this was truly happening. Taking in the minor mannerisms of Ryoga's behaviour to confirm this was the same person. Though she was undoubtedly smaller and didn't speak or act human in any resemblance, Ryoga was still clinging to Ranko and very affectionate but well behaved. He remained close to her like a small guard pig, protecting her from harm while relying on her for protection. Communicating with oinks, squeals and physical gestures, to which Ranko smiled, giggled and petted him with affection. Even as a pig he still loved her, showing that no matter what his form, Ryoga still chose Ranko "he… he is kinda cute" she agreed. Ranko kissed Ryoga's snout fondly causing the piglet to blush before placing him down and pouring the hot water over his head causing him to revert back.
"Due to the lack of an available cure, during wet weather or cloudy days, I keep Ryoga home in hopes of avoiding his curse being activated. This is a serious issue for my son and I would like to keep it private" Asami explained. He helped around the home, stayed in his room or trained in the dojo, so long as he remained away from water until it was safe for him to leave the house. She knew the embarrassment her son coped with due to the curse, feeling less of a man, a weakling. Hating himself for the idiocy that led to his transformation. Wanting to return to his normal life without fear of the curse being triggered.
Ukyo blinked, snapping out of her daze "I… I've never met anyone with a curse like this. I didn't even think such things were possible but…. he's still Ryoga and he's Rancchan's honey-bun. So your secret is safe with me ma'am" Ukyo promised. She wondered if anyone else had visited China and ended up being trapped in a cursed form like Ryoga's, if they had answers on how to break it. Ryoga didn't seem to act any different than usual, aside from being an animal. But the bond between himself and Ranko wasn't severed in any way, in fact it seemed to make it stronger. She promised to protect her friend from any harm that should come her way and Ryoga was now her surrogate brother. She would do her best to watch out for them both and assure nobody caused them trouble.
Ranko smiled, she knew Ukyo would understand, she knew this was a lot to handle but she was coping well "Thanks so much Ucchan". Ryoga blinked nervously, realising he was naked before awkwardly re-clothing himself with his back turned. He'd expected Ukyo to scream, panic or make a scene but she had handled it rather well. His mother calmly explaining everything and keeping control of the situation. She would need time to adjust but she was still behaving normally. Ukyo and Ranko averting their gaze to respect his privacy.
"Gotta say Rancchan, you gotta really have it bad for the guy to handle such a bummer of a curse" Ukyo hummed. Most girls would have run away, rejected him, dumped him or called him a freak upon learning of such a thing. But Ranko remained loyally by his side and still loved him, watching over her piglet prince like a warrior. Ranko blushed but she had to agree, she loved Ryoga and she would help him cure his curse, the same way he was for her Neko ken. "So a pig-boy and a cat curse, perfect match" Ukyo chuckled, it sounded like something from a fairy-story she would have read when she was little. Strange and unusual, yet it suited them. They balanced each other out in a natural way that was endearing and special, she couldn't help but feel a little bit jealous. She hadn't seen Ranko smile in a way that she did around Ryoga before, she was glowing in every sense of the word. She couldn't help but wonder if Nodoka would approve of their relationship however.
Ranko laid on her side reflectively, her red hair splayed across the pillow, no matter how much she willed herself to sleep she couldn't find herself able to relax. Staring at the moonlight casting shadows across the room, making out shapes and faces in the darkness to amuse herself. Wrapping her blankets around herself tightly, feeling like she was a small child all over again, scrabbling around for answers like a clueless fool. Counting down the hours until her mother was in this house, by her side, she couldn't sleep, her brain felt like it would burst. Ukyo had handled the reaction to Ryoga's curse better than she expected, she'd poked and prodded a little, asking questions before accepting it. But it wasn't the only strange part of Ranko's life she would interact with in the future, wait until she met Kuno. Staring at her hand as she absentmindedly began to clench it out of boredom, using it as a distraction from her racing mind. "Rancchan, you awake?" Ukyo asked curiously, she could hear her shifting around and knew she wouldn't be sleeping. She'd chosen to sleep with Ranko in the end, sleeping alone felt strange in a different house and right now she could sense Ranko didn't want to be alone. The room was big enough for Asami to gather the mattress of the bed from the spare room and place it on the floor, the two of them having a sleepover, something they'd never been able to do growing up.
Ranko wrapped her blanket tighter around herself "Mmm" she mumbled. Ukyo had always been able to read her moods and mannerisms ever since they were children, she knew when she was lying, when she was scared, when she was angry, when she needed space, when she was hungry etc. She had no secrets with Ukyo, she was like an open book and yet Ukyo never held these things against her.
"You nervous?" Ukyo asked, how could anyone sleep waiting to meet their long lost parent after all this time. Times like these she would suggest a hot bowl of Ramen, some warm milk and honey or another form of comfort food. But it was too late to be awake and they may disturb Asami or Ryoga. So for now they would just be able to talk out their feelings in hope of finding some comfort. Ranko had developed trust issues, phobias and a defensive attitude towards people among many other habits thanks to Genma. Such a stressful situation was bound to trigger some emotions in her that she long since forgot.
"Yeah…" she admitted, her stomach was in knots, her mind was racing and her hands were clammy, nervous was an understatement.
"I'm glad you told me y'know, about Ryoga, about your cat phobia and his curse. I mean… it's strange as hell and confusing but, I feel like I can look out for you now. I can be the sister I never was as kids…" Ukyo sighed solemnly. She'd been so close to Ranko as children, she was her family, but then Genma ran off with her cart and abandoned her, leaving her behind. She resented the fact that so much of the childhood they could have shared was cut short without warning. But now she had the time to understand Ranko, see what became of her and get her best friend back. There was a lot of problems in Ranko's life, a lot of secrets she had to hide, but with good reason for her actions. They had a lot to talk about and a lot to adapt to, but they would get through it in time. She lost her best friend and her sister, but she would never let that happen again. Ranko softened, rolling over to face Ukyo sleepily, sensing the sadness in her friends tone.
"I did get mad at you for a long time, thinking you'd abandoned me, but then I remember how much you cried when Genma took you away. I couldn't write to you or anything, I didn't have an address. I guess… having you back in my life after all this time. I don't want to lose you again, not when I have my family back…" Ukyo babbled. She'd thought Ranko had forgotten all about her, all about their friendship, about how much fun they had together. But now she realised Ranko never had a choice in the matter, she was dragged along by Genma's will. Cutting all ties and paper trails to make sure he would never be found.
"Ucchan…" Ranko trailed off, she knew how hard it was for Ukyo growing up, how she was bullied by other kids and how she never felt like she belonged. Ranko was her only friend in the whole world and she had nobody after that. She completely understood why Ukyo would feel some resentment towards her for that, even if it wasn't her fault.
There was a soft chuckle from Ukyo's lips "You don't have to apologise to me Rancchan, you never did. I'm really glad we found each other and we found your mum" Ukyo yawned sleepily. Ranko never wronged her, she never betrayed her and she never meant to hurt her, every action that wronged Ukyo was triggered by Genma. Ranko was as much a victim of Genma's actions as anyone. But now it was in the past, they were together again and Genma was out of the picture. They could renew their friendship over and Ranko could be with her mother again.
Ranko smiled, as always Ukyo was right, she'd always been too smart for her age and now it was clearer than ever "Oyasumi Ucchan" she yawned.
"Oyasumi Rancchan" Ukyo responded sleepily
Ranko, Ukyo, Ryoga and Akane stood on the train platform awkwardly, hovering about unknowing of how to behave or what to do to pass the time until Nodoka arrived in person. Nerves were high, expectations even more so, the time had come for them to finally meet in person. They had chosen to meet Nodoka together alongside Ranko for moral support, knowing she wouldn't want to be alone in this situation. She needed her family by her side at a time like this. They would then walk to a coffee shop together before taking the journey back to the Hibiki household, planning a casual but enjoyable afternoon that would feel like everyday.
Ranko had been on edge all morning, fidgeting and pacing, she'd barely been able to eat breakfast and jumped whenever she snapped out of a daze. She'd had a few panicked moments of freaking out to which Ryoga and Ukyo calmed her down. But she was distracted easily enough while they thought of a topic of conversation to relax her. She was wearing a casual white tee, black jeans and some white vans. She'd searched through her wardrobe for something nice to wear for hours but couldn't find anything she wanted, deciding to grab whatever she felt comfortable in. Anything else would feel constricting and strange to her in this moment. Ukyo wearing a yellow tee with the word rebel on the front, blue skinny jeans and a pair of vans, true to herself as always and standing out in the crowd. For once she had removed her white bow from her hair and replaced it with a bandanna around her head instead. She folded her arms expectantly while keeping her gaze fixated on the distance in case Nodoka made an appearance. Akane was wearing a red button-down sleeveless shirt, blue shorts and sandals, keeping her hands clasped in front of her politely while watching Ranko in concern and trying to comfort her. Ryoga was wearing a black Tee, navy jeans and some vans, having grabbed something from his usual attire but opting for his nicer shirts and jeans.
The trio waiting patiently for Nodoka to arrive, wondering if she was late or the train was possibly delayed at all. Mistakes and accidents happened, sometimes causing problems that nobody could foresee.
"Rancchan, you want to try some breathing exercises?" Ukyo offered kindly, if she kept pacing and panicking she would make herself dizzy and possibly trigger a panic attack. She wondered if she should try find a shop and grab some water to help her hydrate and calm down. She knew this was a stressful situation but if she freaked out now she may attract attention in the crowd and they didn't want that. If she would feel more comfortable sitting down perhaps it would be helpful. Breathing would help keep her balanced, focused and relax her body as to prevent negative triggers.
"It'll do you good" Akane agreed, she wished she had come better prepared for a situation like this, but all she could do was try her best. Maybe if they found somewhere less crowded in the station it would help.
"What…. What if she freaked out and forgot, what… what if she ain't coming?" Ranko babbled, what if she didn't want to come after all? What if she didn't want to meet her? What if something else came up at the last second? What if she ended up cancelling and realised she didn't want Ranko either?
"She wouldn't do that Rancchan, you know that" Ukyo reassured her, she knew Genma had affected Ranko's perception on what kind of woman her mother would be. But not everyone was Genma, not everyone would hurt her like he did. Her mother loved her and wanted to be part of her life. Ranko bit her lip anxiously, her brain was going a mile a minute and her skin felt like it was vibrating, everyone else in the background became white noise and she felt like she was standing on the edge of a cliff. The world was spinning, her chest felt tight and she wanted to scream. She couldn't stop shaking and she felt like she might cry, she felt so happy to finally see her mother after all this time. But her self doubt made her question that something might go wrong.
Suddenly, Akane's gaze averted as her eyes widened, catching sight of a woman approaching, the moment had finally arrived at last. She was taller than Ranko, but then she was a grown woman instead of a teenager after all. The resemblance to them was uncanny, aside from Nodoka being a brunette with big brown eyes, their facial appearance was like gazing into a mirror. She walked calmly and elegantly, gripping two suitcases in either hand. She had curly brown hair bound back into a bun styled into the side of her head, a side-parted fringe styled on the right side of her face. She was wearing a dark blue long-sleeved shirt with pink flowers, a black skirt and some black heels, the woman screamed traditional modest dress but carried an air of kindness. Ranko stiffened, staring at the woman in a daze, how many times had she dreamed of this moment? Imagining the day her mother would appear in front of her like this? Time stopped around her like the world had been frozen, time had no meaning, unaffected by her actions. The echoing sound of endless chatter and footsteps faded into the distance, suddenly, ringing deafness filled her senses as shock overcame her. Ukyo was right, she was the spitting image of her mother aside from hair colour, it was like looking in a mirror. She could see her facial shape, eye shape and smile in her mother.
Nodoka placed down her suitcases calmly, straightening herself as she took a step forward nervously "Ranko?" she questioned shakily. Hoping she wasn't mistaken, that this was the girl she was looking for. That she wasn't late, she wasn't mistaken and this wasn't a dream. She was finally face to face with her long lost daughter. Ranko stiffened, her body going into autopilot, ignoring the judgement and stares of the world around her instantly. Running at her mother in a heartbeat, her body shaking and her eyes stinging with tears, desperate to be loved, desperate to be held, desperate to be wanted. Throwing her arms around her and burying into her as a child would, the tears spilling down her cheeks as she gripped onto her mother so tightly she could break. How long had she wanted this? Dreamed of this? To be able to hold her mother, to touch her, to see her, to not just be a figment of her imagination? Nodoka was startled at the gesture for a second before her eyes widened, the warmth of her child's body against her own. The memory of her being so much smaller, so much younger, how it had all changed so fast. Her own brown eyes filling with tears as she wrapped her arms around Ranko, stroking her red hair and gripping her tightly. Her child was back in her arms after fifteen years, how quickly that time had slipped by, she had her baby back "My Ranko… my little girl…" Nodoka sniffled.
Akane beamed at the two from the background, unable to prevent the smile that formed on her face as her eyes watered with happy tears. Wishing more than anything she could have done the same to her late mother one last time. Ranko finally had her home back, she had the love she craved from her mother again. Finally, things had been made right with the world and Ranko had her mother back.
"Rancchan, I'm so happy for you" Ukyo sobbed, wiping at her eyes as tears began to fall, she probably looked like a blubbering mess but she didn't care. This was the happy ending that Ranko deserved, the one she had yearned for all these years. How could Genma keep them apart like this? Knowing how Nodoka so lovingly embraced her, no anger, no judgement, no hatred, no bitterness, just endless joy and relief. Ryoga felt his heart aching with love, Ranko had let her guard down and finally embraced her fragility and admitted how much she missed her mother. Throwing herself at the woman and clinging to her for dear life. The desire to be held by her mother, to be nurtured finally came to light. Ranko was relaxing, she'd instinctively run to her mother. She'd found her safe place and she never wanted to lose it again, now she could know some peace. That was all he ever wanted for her.
Nodoka, Ukyo, Ranko, Akane and Ryoga sat in a coffee shop reflectively before they made their way back to Ryoga's home, they needed to talk and Nodoka needed time to adjust. Nodoka would need to get used to the city she would be staying in for a while so they could act as tour guides before she adapted.
"So, Asami-san has kicked Genma out?" Nodoka responded. She wasn't surprised at the news, even in the past the neighbours always had something to say about her husband which she found embarrassing. She didn't have the heart to kick him out herself, but she was indeed relieved to be rid of him in her home. She could avoid trouble and now some peace, even able to invite the neighbours over without worry that Genma would embarrass her. She was surprised Asami had coped with Genma for so long before taking control and getting him out of her hands, wondering how Genma would be coping on his own.
Ryoga nodded "Hai, he'd been eating us out of house and home for months and did nothing to provide income or behave like a mature adult. Due to his colourful past my mum just got sick of it and kicked him out" he explained. He couldn't cook, he didn't clean, he provided no income and just expected everyone to wait on him hand and foot. Snoring and sleeping away his hangovers, complaining and making a mess of things. He whined, complained and argued constantly and loved to belittle Ranko or himself freely. Excusing his immature actions as an adult who knew better. Eventually Asami snapped and rid herself of Genma and tolerated no further protests or incidents from him, making sure he couldn't step foot in her home without being arrested.
"Gomen, my husband has caused your mother a great embarrassment and I cannot comprehend how frustrating that must have been" Nodoka responded. She was prepared for all the stories that would follow once she arrived at the home, she expected as much. Though she had not been aware or personally involved in the matter, she still felt responsible. She would do whatever she could to help around Asami's home and apologize for her husbands actions no matter what. It seemed that despite being middle aged, Genma had remained stunted in the behaviour of a teenager and refused to change.
Ryoga smiled, she needn't blame herself for what happened as it was beyond her control "My mum is tougher than she looks, she can handle Genma, she'll be delighted to have you as a guest" he reassured her.
Nodoka smiled, she'd heard a lot about Ryoga from the brief letters her husband sent, aware they attended middle school together. She'd been surprised to learn Ranko found a husband candidate so soon in her life. This boy was to be Ranko's future husband, the man she would marry when she was old enough. From what she understood they had been friends as children before Genma separated them which she found cruel. Ranko had few friends as it was growing up, so for her to make new ones while on the road brought Nodoka a lot of comfort. He was a handsome looking young man and was very sociable and well-spoken, dark hair, big reddish brown eyes and small fangs. She highly approved of this person someday marrying her daughter. Though he was somewhat awkward and shy at times she saw nothing wrong with that, he had good intentions towards her child. Though she tended to approve of manly men when it came to future husbands, Ryoga more than fit that bill. He was a martial artist, the future heir to a dojo, well mannered and he had been taking care of Ranko all this time in her place. "And you two are also classmates?" Nodoka asked, averting her attention to Ukyo and Akane.
"Yes ma'am, my family runs the Tendou Dojo and I'm to take over for my father someday. I attend Furinkan with Ranko and consider her my best friend" Akane explained. She was relieved to know some of her closest friends were also martial artists as it made her feel less awkward. Many of her classmates knew about her family, but felt it was old fashioned and strange. But she truly loved her training and her family dojo, taking her role with pride. She wasn't ready to find a husband yet, she felt like it was too early in her life for such a thing. But someday when she met the right guy they would happily run the school together. Her father praised her for her dedication to the art and how skilled she was becoming, reflecting on how much she resembled her mother. But always acting like a good teacher and making sure she remained honourable.
"Do you have any siblings?" Nodoka questioned, she had often longed to have more children herself and give Ranko some siblings, but Genma left her life so soon she never had the chance to have another. So she was trapped in the unfortunate case of having an only child, but there was always the choice of adoption. But at least now she could make up for lost time with her daughter. But she would be glad to know if Akane had any sisters, meaning Ranko could find surrogate family among her friends relatives. Meaning she had more people who could look out for her.
"My sister Kasumi takes care of the house after our mum died when I was little, my father has been attempting to set her up with Doctor Tofu our family doctor for some time. My sister Nabiki is attending college next year" Akane explained. Kasumi was nineteen and most expected her to be engaged or dating at her age, there were many suitors who would happily ask for her hand in marriage or date her. Though Doctor Tofu had eyes for her, Kasumi remained oblivious to his crush. However, she seemed mostly disinterested in the idea of having a relationship with anyone for the time being. Nabiki enjoyed manipulating any man who had an interest in her for her own amusement, but the idea of a committed relationship with someone made her uncomfortable. However, despite Nabiki's carefree and manipulative ways, there was a slight suspicion from the rest of the family that she had affection for Kuno their upperclassman who hounded Ranko and Akane.
Nodoka smiled, the tenderness in which Akane described her family showed a close bond they shared with one another. Though all siblings argued the same way friends did occasionally, there was always going to be a connection of love between them. However, she did wonder how they coped with bridal training, dates and arrangements on their fathers behalf for becoming a bridal candidate. One day they would experience love for themselves "I do hope they visit sometime, they sound like lovely young ladies" she hummed.
"Kasumi would love that, she's a great cook" Akane smiled, Kasumi was always welcoming people into their home with open arms, she didn't harbour a bad bone in her body. Offering tea, snacks, even dinner to those who entered their home. She was a gentle soul whom had taken the mantle of matriarch after their mothers passing, taking care of her family was her priority. She loved being able to fill the empty stomach of her family, bringing people together with food. Be it snacks, lunch or dinner, bringing a smile to the faces of the people she cared foe the most. Maybe she and Nodoka could share some recipes with one another and become close friends.
"I'm Ukyo Kuonji, me and Rancchan have known each other since we were tykes. But when Genma was on the road he stole my dad's family cart and ran off with Ranko. We got separated for nearly a decade before we reunited. I'm attending Furinkan with Ranko and Akane this year" Ukyo explained, cutting in. Ranko was like a sister to her, but she wasn't going to be polite and keep the fact that Genma had wronged her family a secret. She would never hold a grudge against Ranko and her mum seemed like a trustworthy and kind person, so she may as well know what her husband had been up to. She would act as Ranko's bodyguard come what may, keeping her out of trouble and making sure Ranko was able to have as much fun as possible before they graduated.
Nodoka's expression hardened, Genma's schemes had embarrassed this poor girl and ruined her family business. She knew Genma had schemes and mischief but she never thought he would stoop that low. Replacing the cart, any damages done, new equipment, new ingredients etc, anything lost or damaged by the loss of her family's run business would take a heavy toll. Especially if it was their family run business, meaning they bought everything themselves. But she was relieved Ranko had a friend like Ukyo in her life, someone loyal, passionate and genuine that would keep her from straying from the narrow path. She was tomboyish and energetic, but she had lively blue eyes, a strong spirit and a kind heart, she would look out for her daughter come hell or high water. She was passionate about her family business and friendship with her child. "I apologize for my husband's crimes and embarrassing your family name. If you need compensation for the money my husband robbed from you, I am more than happy to aid with that. But I am relieved that my daughter has two such kind and proud women by her side" Nodoka apologised. She could only imagine facing Ukyo's father and explaining her husbands wrongdoings and how embarrassed she felt about it. She didn't have much of an income on her own, surviving off of benefits and the part time job she had acquired on the side to feed herself while Genma was away. But she wouldn't allow Ukyo's family's debt to remain unpaid after all these years.
Ukyo's shoulders raised in pride, to be complemented by Ranko's mother of all people was a great honour, she couldn't wait to share her cooking with Nodoka and ask of her opinion. But Nodoka had no right to feel responsible to pay back the money Genma owed, she wasn't involved whatsoever. If anything, she would steal every coin from Genma's person and send it back to her family. A waitress arrived with their orders to which they thanked her gratefully, easing into a state of comfort and sociability.
A pot of tea for Nodoka
A cappucino for Ryoga
Akane ordered a milkshake
Ukyo ordered a hot chocolate as did Ranko
Nodoka poured her tea calmly, balancing the pot with her hand assuring nothing was spilled "And have you been learning to cook? If Genma kept you on the road all this time you would require sustenance" Nodoka questioned in concern. Ranko had loved to help her in the kitchen, acting as her little helper any chance she got. But without her mother to aid her in the kitchen or a father could capable of teaching her this. How would she eat? How would she learn to cook and become a responsible adult? She relied on Genma to act as a guardian in her place and provide care when he took Ranko away from her. Hoping he would raise Ranko into the best version of herself, yet he had failed miserably.
Ranko sighed in annoyance "As a kid pop was terrible for skipping out meals and running out on the bill. But as I got older I took lessons on how to cook on the road so I could eat. I took cooking classes briefly in middle school before he dragged me out again. But Asami's been a great teacher" she explained. The amount of debt he had wracked up from the people he had wronged or businesses he had gotten on the wrong side of was ridiculous, but Genma had no means of paying them back. But being the fast learner she was, Ranko learned to cook from locals and picked up tricks that allowed her to improve, learning to cook for herself away from the prying eyes of Genma so she could have a meal to herself. Being able to cook alongside Asami made her feel at home, allowing her to imagine what it would have been like with Nodoka.
"He stole your food?" Nodoka questioned coldly Genma had been robbing her child of nutrients to care for himself? Genma could have shared, he could have cooked, he could have done anything to give a bigger portion to Ranko. But instead he chose to squirrel food away for himself and deny Ranko of any. She was becoming increasingly disgusted by everything she was learning about Genma, the man she had married was a dishonourable man and divorce was becoming more tempting. She felt no sense of affection, loyalty or care for Genma, nowadays it was a marriage of convenience. The group felt a chill run down their spine at the hinted rage bubbling within Nodoka. The same as Asami, to get on the wrong side of Nodoka was a death wish.
"Y'know pops, always out for number one" Ranko huffed, Genma had always put himself first in any situation, deflecting any blame from himself. Putting her through hell with training, all a learning lesson yet he ran away at the idea of enduring it himself. He was the reason for her Ailurophobia and her Neko-ken, he was the reason for her trust issues. He cared so much about pressuring her into the vision of the son he never had, trying to make her something she wasn't. Constantly living out his unhealthy hobbies and habits, yet whenever she did something selfish herself she was berated and bullied for it.
Nodoka gripped her cup, restraining her anger as to not make a scene despite the storm of emotions surging through her. The anger and bitterness she felt towards Genma's behaviour and treatment of their only child burned within her. If she hadn't been suspicious that Genma was a bad parent in the past, without question, she would take full custody of her daughter from today hereafter. He'd ruined her child's life enough as it was. She would be sure to help Ranko find a decent college to attend to further her education, which would allow her to visit if she so wished. Making sure that she was able to act as the main guardian to Ranko in the foreseeable future. "You say Asami has been teaching you? I give my thanks that Ryoga's mother was kind enough to give you lessons in my place" she sighed. Nodoka sipped her tea before placing down her cup, the tea easing her mood and allowing her to relax. "I assume you are a senior in high school now, meaning college would be the year after next. Have you chosen a future career option?" Nodoka questioned. She knew martial arts would always be a part of her daughters life due to the pressures of Genma, but surely she must have other dreams, what of her friends? What were theirs?
"Growing up Dr Tofu was a huge role model for me, how he was so kind and always took care of us. I also really loved animals, so I thought medicine or veterinary care would be great for me. I know its hard work but I truly believe I can achieve it" Akane responded. Dr Tofu was someone she had harboured a crush on for the longest time, he was so mature, kind and responsible, but he had feelings for her older sister and that would never change. Hopefully someday she would meet someone who would make her feel cherished and loved. But he had helped inspire her for the future, what path she could choose to make something of herself. She'd always loved animals, trying to adopt stray cats when she was little and smuggle them home only for her father to scold her and Kasumi to kindly explain why they couldn't keep the kitty. She had later accepted that she may never be able to match up to her sister Kasumi's innate talent for being a housewife, but she could become her own person in her terms.
"But what about the dojo?" Ranko asked in surprise, she knew Akane a weakness for cute things and hated being teased for her tomboyish ways. But she showed promise as a martial artist and for her to give it up due to peer pressure felt saddening. Even she had been teased for being a female martial artist growing up, but now she was strong enough to defeat them and leave them on their asses. She teased Akane herself sometimes but never out of malice, she knew Akane was self conscious and often hated how people teased her.
"I'll still take over for my dad, but I want my career too. It might even act as a second income should we not get enough students" Akane explained. She would always try to be the best martial artist she could be, training and educating herself, learning from her mistakes. Her father praising her for her growth and dedication to her talents. But martial arts wasn't enough to keep the dojo running and by becoming a vet she could make more money while helping people. Twice the income, more of the support and less for her family to worry about.
"Smart" Ukyo agreed, taking up a second career or job for more income wasn't uncommon. Many people took up multiple jobs to pay bills and provide for their families, hell even their parents had done so in the past. She was thinking of the bigger picture in her future, which for someone their age was impressive. Even she as much as she loved her business had to think of every option to make money, how to run her business and advertise.
"And you dear? You say your family ran a business which I assume you are a part of?" Nodoka asked. She was awfully young to be running such a burden on her shoulders, running a business took a lot of effort and time out of your daily life. If she was a student in high school it meant she had to be balancing both. While many found their careers at a young age, everyone faced troubles before finally making it work. She wondered if her family checked in or helped her in some way, they had far more experience after all and surely they would be worried about her.
Ukyo nodded "Yes Ma'am, I run an Okonomiyaki shop in the town centre. It's my baby for now but I'd love to learn all sorts of new culinary styles. So after high school I'm closing up shop and going to cooking school" she smiled. She'd been learning how to cook Okonomiyaki since she was a toddler, taking in all the skills she could. After Ranko left she dedicated her life to cooking and tried to learn as many new recipes as she could. But even she made mistakes or had flaws sometimes, but she made it work. It took her years to perfect her craft and become as proud as she was of herself today. But in cooking school she could learn even more and branch out into different styles.
"That's amazing Ucchan!" Ranko praised, she always knew Ukyo would be destined for good things, her skills were unparalleled and had acted as a comfort food to her growing up. She knew attending a cooking college would be very scary, a different kind of pressure and the fear of failure, but she would make it work. Ukyo wasn't the type to give up, she faced any storm come what may. She had no doubt in her mind that Ukyo would make it, working her way to the top.
"You'll be a contender for Kasumi's cooking" Akane chuckled, so far her skills in the kitchen were unbeaten. But she was sure Kasumi would happily teach Ukyo whatever she needed to know in the kitchen.
Nodoka averted her gaze to Ryoga "Your mother and I were familiar in college where I met Genma, is Asami well? I assume she is the current matriarch of the family school. But what are your plans for the future aside from inheriting the school?" Nodoka asked. She was amazed to see how much Ryoga resembled his mother, though he had his father's hairstyle, pointed fangs and awkward social behaviour. She knew the two had been together since high school and were sweethearts. She knew his death took a toll on Asami and deeply damaged her life, yet she remained strong and raised her son alone. Genma had been close to Asami in high school yet he never stopped harassing the poor woman. She knew Ryoga would be expected to take over in her place, but even at his age he had to have his own dreams.
Ryoga shifted "My mum still runs the school, after my dad passed away she was my teacher in martial arts. She plans on me inheriting the school when I'm old enough but she wants me to educate myself further and become more responsible to be able to take it over. I'll be training after high school but I want to join the police force. I have great respect for them and I'm sure it will teach me new skills" he explained. His mother had been the greatest mentor in his growth as a martial artist, teaching him to perfect his techniques and control his battle aura. Using defensive and offensive fighting styles that would allow him to avoid damage, avoid a fight yet protect himself and defeat someone. Survival martial arts was a very fluid style of fighting. He wanted to be the best man he could be for when he was to take over for her. But he wanted to be able to protect others using that skill and joining the police was the best way to do so. Ranko blushed, why did the mental image of Ryoga as a police officer sound so appealing?
Nodoka knew in that moment Ryoga was indeed the best suitor for her daughter. He harboured immense respect for his mother yet remained humble for all he still had to learn. "Your mother taught you well, I'm glad she ensured such respectable traditions into your teachings. I'll be very pleased to meet her" Nodoka smiled. She then turned to her daughter with a curious gaze "But then that leaves you Ranko dear, surely you have some idea of what your future holds?" she questioned in concern. She could now continue the bridal training she had in mind for Ranko before Genma took her away, she could continue training her to be a future wife for Ryoga someday. There was so much she needed to teach her, so much they had to catch up on, the work would be hard but worth it. But it seemed that wasn't the only goal in her life anymore, Ranko had found something more important in her life than what her father raised her to be.
Ranko shifted "I…. the Saotome school has been my whole life, it was all pops ever taught me. But… I want to explore, I want to learn more about my skills, I want to learn more about cooking. I love that Ryoga's school is about survival martial arts. So maybe, I might keep training there and maybe cooking school like Ucchan. Y'know figure me out" she babbled. She'd never been allowed to be selfish her whole life, she'd never been able to think for herself for one second. She knew that Martial arts were important to her, focusing her mind and body into an ancient art style that was deeply respected. But she had her own identity to figure out too, she wanted to explore and educate herself, away from Genma's prying eyes. She wanted to enjoy cooking but in a less traditional sense, be fun, be creative and enjoy herself. She could blend Ukyo and Ryoga's styles into her own and see where it led.
Nodoka nodded, Genma had restrained Ranko from any self-exploration or expression that she had been kept in a box. Of course, she would be restless and curious of what lay ahead of her, she was of that age after all. She raised her hand to caress Ranko's head "Ranko, you are a smart, free-spirited young woman and I know you will do the correct thing. You have a passion for the arts which I am proud of. But if you need to find yourself, only you can make the journey. But just be careful along the way" she smiled. She had a wild heart, a desire to learn, a thirst for life with a mind like a sponge. But so long as she followed honour, as long as she did what was right, she would be ok. This was something she had to do alone and nobody could change that. Ranko blushed but nodded, glad of her mothers support.
Ranko and the others arrived at the Hibiki household quietly, refreshed from their coffee date and conversations, but now eager for a hot meal and relaxation. "Tadaima, Mum?" Ryoga called loudly, hoping she wasn't sleeping or working, she knew they had guests but they were home a bit later than expected. He would explore the house to check up on her if he sensed something was wrong, he would always protect his home and family. He'd been communicating with his mother throughout the day via text message, but she may have become distracted or found her own plans. But she would never leave the home unattended, she was a sensible woman. But what if Genma tried to sneak back into the home again?
There were some footsteps before Asami appeared in the doorway, her blue eyes kind and patient. She was wearing her casual clothes and an apron meaning she had been in the kitchen. She brushed some of her hair from her face acknowledging her visitors, she smiled warmly at the group "Okaerinasai honey, I see you brought friends again, Konbanwa Nodoka. How was the trip?" Asami asked. She had been reflecting on how long they had been absent, but then trains were unpredictable and no doubt they had a lot to discuss. She just hoped the baggage wasn't too heavy. She knew Ryoga was responsible but she hated for him to be out so late in case he found himself in trouble. But she was relieved to see him home and hoped he brought an appetite with him.
Nodoka smiled wearily, she could smell the cooking from here and her stomach growled at the scent of a meal. It was nice to have someone else cook in her place for once "Rather taxing if I am honest, train rides often make me sleepy but the view along the way was lovely. May I ask in which room I will be residing during my stay?" she asked. The distance and length of the journey had been tedious and she found herself nearly falling asleep on the ride over. Trying to find ways to keep herself entertained until she reached her destination. But admiring the countryside and the city view from her window had been enjoyable indeed. But now she was eager to rest a little before dinner was ready.
Asami smiled in understanding, averting her gaze to her son "Ryoga will show you to your room, I'll make some tea so we can finally talk. Ukyo, be a dear and give me a hand," she asked. Ryoga would help her unpack and feel at home, he was a helpful young man and always polite to guests. She was sure Nodoka would be tired and need some time to adjust being somewhere new. But she would be glad of a helper in the kitchen to get everything finished.
"Hai" Ukyo agreed, following after Asami eagerly with a bright smile, she had become accustomed to being a sous chef and found it rather enjoyable. Being able to speak to Asami during cooking and learn new things from her. She was a good teacher and they could speak of anything together. Ryoga took Nodoka's belongings before leading her away upstairs.
Nodoka, Asami and the group sat around the table in reflective silence, a peaceful ambiance shared by the group, ensuring a sense of safety and trust. Nodoka gazed around the home curiously, though the outside was very much a traditional Japanese home, the interior was a blend of modern décor and old fashioned Japanese styling. She had to admit it was very impressive. Asami's life and decor had managed to blend the traditional sense of a home with the modern taste of the century, bringing the two together into a harmonically styled balance.
"Asami-san do you and Ryoga live here alone?" Nodoka questioned, it was a rather big house to reside in alongside merely her son. Though having Ranko here would help add companionship, surely she lived here with more than two people. Once Ryoga attended college, she would be all alone here in her home. From personal experience she knew how unpleasant that was to cope with. She didn't wish to intrude into Asami's personal life but this nagging feeling at the back of her mind wouldn't go away.
Asami gripped her hands on her lap tightly, memories of that fateful day flashing through her mind. Though time had made the process easier, she would never stop missing her husband. She was more than used to being questioned and ridiculed for being a single mother, having never found someone else after her husband passed. Wondering how she coped alone. "Hai, my late husband passed away some time ago during Ryoga's middle school years. I took on the school in his place and raised my son. He's been a big help to me, but now having Ranko and her friends here, it feels livelier" she confessed.
Nodoka gave a sympathetic expression, wondering if she had overstepped her bounds by bringing up such a subject "Gomen, I had no idea of your husbands passing" she apologised. Genma spoke so little of his past and his friendships, that she was only led to assume what may have occurred in their lives. Hoping she hadn't insulted Asami by accidentally making things awkward.
Asami smiled, she could sense Nodoka had meant no spite in what she said, she doubted Genma had told her about any of this prior to his taking Ranko away. "He was of frail health during our teens, unfortunately, it was inevitable. I am however grateful we were able to marry and he lived long enough to see the birth of our son" she expressed. There had been days when he was forced to skip school due to his health, even when he was at school he was frail or sometimes had to visit the nurses office. But he never let it get him down, even when other teens mocked him. Asami would sometimes visit and keep an eye on him, making sure he was never harmed or suffered. Causing her to become protective of him and her devotion to only deepen. The day she realised she was pregnant with their son, she recalled how happy her husband was, yet so hurt when he realised he had not long left for this world.
"I'm glad to know my daughter and her friends have brought an energy back into your home" Nodoka soothed, losing your husband was a pain no woman ever deserved to feel. Having to remain in the living world while your lover was somewhere far away you couldn't reach. Longing to see them again yet being reminded you never could. Losing your lover so tragically and so soon in life, it was a heartache nobody ever wanted to experience. It would explain why she was so close to her son and why she worried so deeply about Ranko and her friends, she didn't want them to befall any harm the same way her husband had. She was a strong willed woman and she had respect for all she had overcome in the years, she was after all younger than herself.
Asami took a deep breath, there was much to tell Nodoka about Genma's crimes and his trauma inflicted upon their daughter "How much do you know of Genma?" Asami questioned. This would be a lot for Nodoka to process, understanding what Genma was capable of and his apathy towards his actions. She hated to admit that Genma was predictable in that sense, but then Nodoka never saw him as a teen, how he had behaved. She didn't doubt that he would keep secrets or lie to Nodoka, hoping to win her over with charm and hide his mistakes from her in hopes of moving on. But now all of his dirty laundry was out in the open and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
"Aside from the brief letters of her training and growth that he sent me alongside some pictures. The last one I ever received was upon Ranko turning fourteen and entering middle school" Nodoka replied. She'd watched her little girl grow up via pictures instead of being able to experience those memories in person. Wishing she could have been there to experience them and hating what she was missing out on. Hoping that she was happy, safe and able to adapt to the life Genma forced upon her. But soon after Genma cut off all communication, no letters, no pictures, nothing, leaving her alone with the mere memories she had. Ukyo frowned, she still couldn't believe Genma cut off communication with Nodoka after three years, what an ass. The only thread she had tied to her daughter and Genma cut ties, never explaining himself and simply assuming Nodoka would accept that.
"During that time of training, Genma inflicted onto Ranko many banned arts. Unfortunately causing us to seek out therapy for Ranko" Asami explained. Though Martial arts was about training the mind and body, many tests and trials to face in order to become stronger. There were some seen as too dangerous for trainees to take part in purely for the harm they caused. Genma however, being the stubborn and oblivious fool he was ignored all warnings and subjected Ranko to many horrors that she never deserved. Though she was making leaps and bounds to overcome the trauma and hardships she had endured, the scars had happened so early on in Ranko's life that she may never truly recover.
Nodoka's eyes widened and she became anxious "Therapy? What did he do to her?" she demanded, she felt sick at just what Genma may have done to her daughter for her to need therapy. She could feel her hands trembling and her stomach in knots, every worse case scenario running through her head.
Ranko shifted, this was not a subject she enjoyed reflecting on, just the mention of cats made her skin crawl. "Well…. Uh… do… do you remember when I was little… I liked playing with the neighbour's cats?" she asked. Back then when she was still innocent and carefree, petting cats and hoping they would be her friends. But then Genma took that away from her, no longer did she see small furry balls of joy, but monstrous, creepy eyed balls of hell that scared the life out of her. The way they their eyes glowed in the darkness, the horrific sound of their meows, god she felt sick. But her mother needed to know the truth about how her phobia came to be.
Nodoka hummed "You were fond of Tama, the ginger tabby on our street" she reflected. Ranko had always loved animals, she loved to play and she loved to make friends. However, sometimes her energy scared them off due to her enthusiasm, but it was expected of toddlers. However, she wondered if Ranko ever made friends with any animals on her travels to prevent her from ever becoming lonely. But she had a bad feeling as to why Ranko had become so hesitant to bring up the subject of cats.
"Genma used this banned technique called Neko ken against Ranko, pretty much it involves cats and trauma. So now Ranko has an extreme phobia of cats…" Ryoga huffed. What he had put Ranko through, what she had endured, what he had seen her become, all because of Genma and an ongoing forced interaction with cats, it was difficult to watch. He would help Ranko overcome it no matter what, until she was stable enough to be around cats without being on the verge of a panic attack. Even his mother was disgusted at what he had put Ranko through, how as a parent he would even consider it a good idea.
"He…. HE DID WHAT!" Nodoka yelled, she knew Genma could be reckless and foolish with his ideas but this was insane. He'd forced her to go through forbidden training methods that had psychologically damaged her daughter without her knowledge. All of these secrets that Genma had kept from her, she wouldn't forgive him for this. He'd pushed Ranko far beyond what was necessary, there were limits to how much someone could take and Genma had ignored that. The price paid was the trauma that Ranko had been inflicted with. She stared at Ranko who bowed her head in shame, she hated to tell this to her mother, she had to be so disappointed in her. This heartfelt reunion after all this time had to be ruined with her dirty secret.
Asami expressed a look of guilt, it was best explained if she witnessed first hand just how bad her Neko ken was, it would provide a better insight as to what they were explaining. However, the toll it would take on Ranko's psyche after all the healing she had been going through worried her immensely. She didn't want to have to do this to Ranko "It would be best if we showed you" she explained.
Ryoga locked Ranko in a pantry, hating that he did this to her, trapped in a small dark place with no way out and confused as to what was about to happen. Hating himself for having to put her through this so her mother would understand. He felt like coward, no better than Genma, knowing he'd never felt this shame or guilt when he made her do this. Playing the sounds of cats in the background while he heard Ranko crying and whimpering on the other side, begging to be let out. Soon it went from whimpers and crying to Ranko turning silent and the crying of "make it stop" and "let me out" ending. He wanted nothing more than to hold her in his arms, stroke her hair and reassure her she was safe, that she would come to no harm. Ryoga took a deep breath, preparing himself for what was to come, even though he knew she wouldn't hurt him like this, it took a while to adjust. Nodoka, Asami, Akane and Ukyo lingering in the background. He nodded as he opened the closet door knowing what would occur, the rest of the group staring back at him with understanding eyes, knowing how hard this was for him. There was silence, patiently waiting for Ranko to respond after being locked in a pantry while they performed some form of strange ritual. Before long, Ranko crawled out of the pantry on her hands and sniffing the ground. She scanned her area warily, watching out for danger or prey that may fall into her line of sight, her eyes wide and feline, no longer human.
"Ranko…." Nodoka trailed off in concern watching her daughter, she was acting very strange, not at all like the girl she had seen earlier. She was behaving like an animal, her body language was the same way a cat would walk. Her caution, her eyes, her aura, everything about her felt wrong. She wanted to pinch herself just to make sure she wasn't dreaming or involved in a joke of some kind. Ranko blinked curiously, listening to the voice of the woman who was addressing her, her head tilting as she observed the stranger. Staring at Nodoka in confusion, a new face in her home.
Ryoga knelt to stroke Ranko's hair affectionately, running his fingers through her soft red waves, tickling her like one would a cat to make them purr. He knew exactly what to do and what to say in order to calm her. "Ranko, it's me, we're all here" he reassured her, she wasn't alone and nobody would cause her any harm. Ranko blinked, gazing up at her mate with wide eyes, recognizing his face and scent instantly. Her fear and reservation melting away into an expression of pure joy, purring and rubbing her head against him affectionately. Ryoga smiled to himself, even though her psyche was locked away in her feline mind, Ranko on a subconscious level still knew him. She trusted him, acting the closest to him through her transformation until she returned to normal.
"You weren't kidding sugar, she really likes you" Ukyo scoffed, she wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't seen it. Ranko had instantly softened and warmed up to Ryoga, her timid nature and hesitance to approach anyone melting away. She was curled up against him like a baby kitten, refusing to remove herself from his side. She eased into his touch and even pined for further affection from him. But then in animal terms, she was Ryoga's mate and he was hers, the way she was behaving was imprinting. Cats were very picky creatures with whom they got close to and as a human Ranko was exactly the same. The fact that Ranko had such trust in Ryoga even when she was a cat showed her feelings for him. She had to admit this was the cutest thing she had ever seen. Ryoga blushed but it was indeed true, Ranko was smitten for him be it in human form or cat form.
Akane knelt shyly, this was her first time seeing Ranko in Neko form, she didn't want to scare her and right now she needed to treat Ranko like a cat not a human. Any wrong move could send bad signals or scare her in some way. She wanted Ranko to know she cared about her "Psss, psss, psss here kitty" she soothed, she needed Ranko to trust she was still her friend. She loved animals, she had always loved animals, it was rather hard to see Ranko behaving like one given she was a human. But in her mind she had become a cat, perhaps as a form of coping with the stress she endured from being around felines.
Ranko blinked, sniffing the air before slowly prowling towards Akane, watching her with wide eyes as she crawled off Ryoga's lap towards the girl. She sensed she was another female, two strange females in her den nearby her mate. Sniffing the raven-haired girl's hand before licking it affectionately, recognizing her scent. Akane breathing a sigh of relief before scratching Ranko's head who purred in response "She's kind of cute like this" Akane giggled. She had been worried that Ranko may see her as a threat in neko form, since she was dating and engaged to Ryoga, Akane could be perceived as a rival female. Ryoga relaxed, the fear of her behaviour around her friends instantly depleting, it seemed Ranko was smarter than he gave her credit for. He just worried about how her attitude differentiated when she became a cat. But it seemed all of his worries had been for nothing after all, yet again just like before, Ranko recognised Akane as a friend. She knew she was safe, she was around familiar people. She trusted her and nuzzled against her affectionately.
Ukyo hesitated before kneeling shakily, she didn't know why she was so nervous, they had known each other all their lives. This was Rancchan, her best friend, someone she loved. But then Ranko's perception on people was vastly different to the way humans acted, she would try not to be upset if something went wrong but she just hated to see her best friend acting this way. She hoped Ranko still knew her and still cared about her like this, that nothing had changed. "Rancchan, it's me Ukyo, y'know Okonomiyaki gal?" she asked shakily. Wondering if maybe she should tie her hair back like she used to when they were little, maybe make herself look familiar to Ranko. Ranko stared at her with wide eyes, before smiling brightly and crawling into Ukyo's lap, rubbing against her happily and licking her face. She purred happily and pawed at her playfully, watching the brunette with happy eyes. Ukyo stiffened, Ranko still knew her, even in this traumatised, coping feline state, Ranko knew she was a friend.
"Must have missed you Ukyo, she's only ever done that to me or mum" Ryoga explained, Ranko had hissed and yowled at the very sight of Genma, driving him out of the home. But she had happily warmed up to himself and his mother, for her to have crawled onto Ukyo at first sight showed she accepted her. He knew that Ranko had missed her best friend during their separation and the deeper part of Ranko's psyche as a cat was afraid of losing her again.
Ukyo felt as though she may cry, her best friend was here trapped in a cat mentality after being forced to face her fears. Yet she still remained affectionate and loyal to her in this state. She hugged Ranko softly, nuzzling against her red hair, the latter surprised for a moment but she didn't escape from her grasp. "Oh Rancchan, I promise I'll help you beat this" she sniffled, she knew this was still her Rancchan, this was still the girl she knew. But her mind was so warped and broken that she behaved like a cat, she hated seeing her this way. She would make sure Genma paid dearly for this, that she would get revenge on him for putting Ranko through this.
"So whatever Genma did to my child, to cope with the fear and danger she faced. She now becomes a cat to cope with it?" Nodoka stated her tone pained. Ranko must have been subjected to this repetitively for her to have such a severe response. Genma had forced Ranko to face something she hated so often her poor mind couldn't handle it anymore. She felt like the worst mother in the world for giving her up, for even thinking that Genma was worthy of raising their daughter correctly. She couldn't hide the tears that formed behind her eyes, the stinging sensation and pain in her heart of knowing what Ranko had endured. She should have stopped him, she should have never given Ranko to her father.
Asami nodded, reaching out to grasp Nodoka's hand to comfort her "The reaction is purely psychological. We have been sending Ranko to a therapist in hopes of her getting better, but due to the long-term exposure Genma caused. It will take time" she apologised. She knew how hard this would be for her to witness, seeing her daughter behave so strangely. But she was still Ranko, somewhere within herself she remembered them. The same way Ranko had learned how to behave this way, she could be cured from this with years of therapy. It would be hard and it would take time, but it would work.
Nodoka hesitated, she had come too far to give up now, she finally had Ranko back in her grasp and she wasn't going to let her go again. She knew whatever happened in Neko form wasn't her child's fault, she was a purely animal instinct at this moment and wasn't thinking like a rational person. She would never bring herself to hate Ranko whatever happened, she would do her best to help her through this. She took a deep breath and steadied herself "Ranko, it's mother, do you know me?" she asked calmly. She knew any form of aggression or hostility may frighten Ranko, her hands shaking and her heart hammering. Ranko peered over Ukyo's shoulder with wide curious eyes, remembering the face of the person she met earlier today. This woman, the same woman with the kind eyes so full of tears when they met. So full of unbridled love for her child, so full of warmth, the woman who stood with open arms and held her so tightly as if she may break upon impact. The arms that made her feel safe and loved, who stroked her hair and spoke so politely. The woman who waited for her, she crawled out of Ukyo's lap tentatively, approaching her mother with curious eyes, before crawling onto her lap and rubbing against her mother purring. Nodoka released a gasp of relief, choking down fresh sobs, wishing more than anything to scoop Ranko into her arms and rub her face against her cheeks.
"She recognises you" Akane cried in relief, of all the people Ranko recognised as a cat, her mother was the most important. This was a special moment and this was something to be treasured. Ranko had never stopped loving her mother, even when they were apart, despite being strangers for so long. Nodoka felt her lip wobbling, cupping her hand over her mouth. Her poor baby girl had been exposed to such fear that she became a cat, but she still felt drawn to her. She would do whatever she could do make it better, knowing Asami would be of great help top her. Stroking Ranko's head gently, making her feel safe.
Ranko sat curled up on Ryoga's lap in content purring loudly while Ryoga stroked her head, after her mother had gently ushered her from her lap to excuse herself to freshen up. She had remained glued to Ryoga for the rest of the night and had refused to approach anyone else again. Though he knew it was selfish, Ryoga rather enjoyed being the favourite of Ranko in neko form. He'd always been scared that she would never feel the same way about him as his crush blossomed, that she would reject him and he would suffer heartbreak. But when she was implied to feel the same way, her feelings confirmed as a cat, he couldn't be happier. The fact that he could rub it in Kuno's face was even sweeter, that he and Ranko were meant to be.
Ukyo smiled in amusement, she could see him smiling like an idiot and it was adorable "Guess you're her favourite" she teased. She felt no sense of jealousy seeing her best friend like this, she knew Ranko loved her just in a different way. Ryoga was the first person who learned of her cat transformation so it was only right she be so close to him. She hadn't left his side once, her clear attachment to Ryoga was evident to see. Ranko had few people in her life she could trust so much, so it was natural she would cling to people even as a cat.
"How long will this last?" Akane asked in concern, if the transformation caused such a severe change in her personality, surely she could become human again. But given she had only see Ranko change once, she had no idea of how long she would be in this state. She hated the idea of Ranko being trapped like this while she couldn't do anything about it. It made her feel helpless and guilty, merely able to act as an observer and nothing more.
He gazed down at his fiance with a gentle expression "Usually she returns to normal in the morning" Ryoga explained, the first time he saw her as a cat she'd woken up the next morning herself. Meaning her mind had to heal itself on its own terms, there was nothing outside forces could do to alter it. Waiting it out was all they could do, as annoyingly frustrating as it was, there wasn't another option.
"Morning? That long?" Nodoka snapped? If she had known Ranko would be trapped like this for an entire night she never would have agreed for them to make her transform. She couldn't watch her daughter go through something like this again, it was too painful to observe. She hated to lose her temper but this was her child, her flesh and blood, her family. Did she remain trapped like this for a whole night? She hated to see her child suffering like this because of her failure of a husband. There had to be something she could do to make it go away faster, some way of bringing Ranko back from the recesses of her mind. Anything to trigger a human response in her.
Asami clasped Nodoka's hand kindly, she could sense her anxiety rising but she had to remain calm. Right now they had to watch over her, but taking care of each other was necessary also. "Nodoka, breathe. I understand your concern for Ranko and your feelings are expected. However, Ranko remains highly perceptive to our moods, should we exert ourselves or become angered it may frighten her. We need to remain level headed" she soothed. As a mother, her instincts would be on override, wanting to go above and beyond for her daughter to keep her safe. But right now Ranko was highly sensitive and the last thing they wanted was to scare her. They would be able to get through this, unfortunately it would simply get easier with time. Nodoka nodded, bowing her head sadly as she accepted the situation. Asami pitied the poor woman, understanding her conflict, finally reunited with her daughter after all these years. Only to be thrown into another mess of Genma's, picking up the pieces as always. Genma took the best of things, ruined them and never apologised for his mistakes.
"Gomen, all these years the only connection I've had to her is through pictures or letters. When Genma stopped writing to me I could only assume the worst. Now that I finally have her back and then I learn about this. I…. I only wish I could have done more" Nodoka whispered. If she had known what Genma was up to, maybe sent a private investigator to track them, she could have prevented his schemes. She put too much trust in Genma and ignored her better judgement. She had been right to assume the worst in Genma, wishing she could have protected Ranko sooner.
Asami nodded, but she underestimated Ranko's will and resilience, despite her hardships she remained a kind hearted, good natured girl. "She's a strong girl Nodoka, just like you. But she needs you now, and you have all the time in the world to make up for the time you lost" she smiled. She needed her mothers guidance and love which she would now have for the rest of her life, instead of reflecting on the past she needed to focus on the future. Nodoka shifted, knowing that Asami was correct in her words of wisdom, glad to have her as a friend. The same anxious, smiling girl she had met this afternoon was now acting with the embodiment of a cat, it didn't feel real, but she knew it was. She could see Ranko through high school and into college, she could share her current education with her and then the ones she would experience later in life. All the exciting things Ranko would experience in the next stage of her life. She could come and live with her again if she so wished, she could watch Ranko blossom into an amazing young woman. She could watch her marry and find her own happiness, Asami was right.
"Asami-san, we were associates through college due to you being a classmate of my husband. However, during the time in between, we never got to speak to each other personally. But I would very much like to be friends with you, seeing as we shall become in-laws in the future" Nodoka responded. Due to her isolated life, Nodoka hadn't had many friendships in her life which she admitted were difficult for her, causing a great deal of loneliness. Nodoka had admired that Asami's strong spirit, empathy and morals were a good example to her son, teaching him to never give up, to treat others equally and become an admirable young man. However, while she was a more passive and polite person, Asami had a fiery temper and was known to be passive-aggressive, unafraid to speak her opinion. She was a devoted mother as shown by her love for her son, acting as a parental figure to the likes of Ukyo and even Akane too, but she had to admit Asami's modern approach to dating was rather confusing. But perhaps she could learn from Asami and perhaps understand her better.
"Nodoka, I would like nothing more, I know moving to a new place will be strange for you and aside from your daughter everyone else is a stranger to you. I can see why speaking to me would be of a comfort to you. We are soon to be family after all" Asami agreed.
