"How bad did I screw up?"
Cristina had still yet to adjust to the feeling of sleeping in Burke's apartment. The inside smelled like lemony furniture polish and no matter how many weeks she spent there, she never got used to it.
Burke rolled onto his side, draping a heavy arm over her torso. "Hmmm?"
"Today. During Mere's surgery." Burke's soft breathing was warm against her neck. She stated up at the patterns created in the plaster of the ceiling. "I want to know how idiotic I looked."
"You didn't look idiotic," Burke grumbled. "You looked scared."
Cristina sighed. Somehow, scared was worse. "I told Shepherd."
"What?"
"About how I froze," Cristina elaborated. "I was all freaked out and he was the first one I saw after I ran out of the OR." She tilted her head into the fabric on Burke's shoulder. It sickened her to remember how out of control she had felt, like she wasn't in command of her own body. "He probably told Meredith," she mumbled.
"I don't think he would. Derek isn't like that," Burke said softly.
Cristina snorted. "Oh, please. Derek is exactly like that."
"If you say so." Burke was evidently being claimed by sleep. Accepting the fact that this conversation would apparently be put on hold until the morning, Cristina shifted onto her side. She didn't close her eyes until long after Burke's soft snores filled their bedroom.

Meredith woke up at an ungodly hour the next morning and found she wasn't alone.
"Chief?" she asked, bewildered as Webber rounded on her with a blood pressure cuff.
"Good morning, Dr. Grey. Meredith," he said briskly, jotting down her vitals onto his clipboard. "I just thought I'd pop by before rounds-"
"Isn't this intern work? Are you going to present, too?" Meredith pointed out amusedly. She pulled a poor imitation of the cheif's voice. "Meredith Grey, 27, stuck her hand in a body cavity with a live bomb, for some reason -"
Maybe she was imagining things, but Dr. Webber looked slightly embarrassed. "No, no." He stepped back from her bed. "But I can call one in instead if you like. If you would prefer Karev checked your sutures-"
"God no!" Meredith exclaimed, recoiling. The chief chuckled and came forward to tug down the front of her gown and pull back the bandage over her incision.
"Looks good," he confirmed, making another note and putting her file onto the bedside table. Meredith thought he would leave, but Webber fixed her with a strange look. "You remind me a lot of your mother," he said abruptly.
She felt an icy chill spread up her spine. Her whole life, Meredith had done absolutely everything in her power to not be compared to her mother. "Oh - thanks, sir." She averted her eyes down into her sheets.
Webber nodded. "She was an excellent doctor. Would have sacrificed everything - just like you did." He cleared his throat awkwardly and stepped towards the door. "Burke's coming in for a post op around 10," he told her.
"Alright," Meredith said uneasily as the chief disappeared into the hall.
