Ladybug gripped her communicator tightly. She looked at it as though it would dial the number itself.
The call was an impulse move. It was about three am. She couldn't sleep. It didn't help that the memory of her last encounter with Chat Noir was always on her mind. It always had been. Ladybug made sure her parents were asleep. It would be an awkward situation if they eavesdropped. She even turned off her phone in case of accidental buttdails or texts.
Ladybug's biggest worry in this situation shouldn't have been any of those things. Would Chat Noir pick up? That was the real worry. Ladybug took a deep breath. Then hit the dial button.
The device gave five long rings. She considered quickly hanging up. When it rang for the last second. The call picked up from the other end.
" Hello ." Said a whispery voice on the other side.
Ladybug let out a laugh. Filled with relief. It was so nice hearing her partner's voice after so long. She never knew how much you could miss something as simple as a voice.
"I assume that's laughing or you have a hairball."
Ladybug's smile was so wide her cheeks began to hurt.
"I thought you wouldn't pick up the phone."
"Why wouldn't I pick up."
"It's three am on a school night. Shouldn't you be curled up in a circle?"
Chat Noir quietly snorted.
"I'm usually awake at this time. Though I did jump in surprise when my ring began to beep. I considered transforming to answer. Yet Plagg taught me how to answer without transforming."
" You can make calls without transforming?"
"I just poke the middle of it once to answer. Three times to hang up."
Ladybug frowned. She looked up and down at herself. Here she was all transformed in fear of someone walking in. While Chat Noir could use his ring instead of his staff to call. She totally had to talk to Tikki if she could do something similar.
Chat Noir laughter filled the silence.
"Don't tell me you're transformed."
Ladybug let the silence answer that question.
Chat Noir laughed more. Then there was the sudden sound of voices. Static. More static. Walking. The closing of a door. What appeared to be water running. Ladybug felt herself sweat.
"Sorry. Woke some people here. Lied and said I had a nightmare about a horror movie I watched recently with my cousin. Said I was gonna shower it off. Don't worry. I'm not actually showering. I'm just sitting here." Chat Noir whispered.
Ladybug remembered Chat Noir strict father. How much it affected him. Ladybug hoped she didn't get him in trouble. It brought her back to what she originally really wanted to talk to him about. Ignoring it would only cause more trouble. Ladybug was ready for this. To set things right.
"Is everything okay at home?" Ladybug started it off.
"Yeah? It's been really nice these past few days. No sarcasm by the way."
"No more ghosts. No more strange sounds?"
"What ghosts and sounds?"
Yikes she totally forgot that she had that conversation with him as Marinette.
"I meant the movie didn't freak you out at home too much?"
"No...um maybe a little…sorry for making you worry about me." Chat Noir's voice was quieter than the previous whispers.
The pain in his words were there. It would have been easy to end it there. Blame him for everything. His stress piled on top of hers. That was not who she was though. Ladybug could not let him feel that way. She would not. Never. If he could handle her at her worst. She could be with him. Even with many rocks in the way.
Ladybug let those words wrap around her heart. Willing them to form the right words.
"No, Chat Noir. I am sorry."
"For what. I should have known I was stressing you out."
"I should have been honest. What I did was not good. Screaming at you. Listen..."
Ladybug laid down. Getting comfortable. Closing her eyes as she spoke. Hating the stutters that formed.
"You are one of my bestest friends. My partner. I never want to make you feel like you can't go to anyone for support. Especially me. I never intended that. Just. I am here Chat Noir. We cool?"
The silence that followed did not help to know if they were cool.
There were a couple of sniffs on the Chat Noir side. Well a lot.
" How many lame points would you add if I'm crying right now."
"As much as me because I'm crying too"
" I'm literally sobbing. Snot coming down my nose. I win in lame points. Where is the prize?"
"The prize is being the master of T.M.I"
They laughed. Ladybug wiped the tears from her eyes. She thought she would never feel as happy as she was at this moment.
In that moment of bravery she asked. "Tell me about yourself."
"I thought we weren't supposed to reveal our identities. You and Fu are rather strict on that."
It was late at night. Suddenly Chat Noir was the mature one. Ladybug wasn't that impulsive though.
"We don't need to tell each other private identity related stuff. I know things like your family. Even your fear of chickens. Yet not even you're favorite color."
"In my defense. That akumatized chicken was quite scary...it's green. My favorite color. Not the chicken."
Two hours. That's how long they talked. Ladybug learned so much about Chat Noir in little facts.
He was lactose intolerant but found comfort in drinking milk when upset. He liked to fence. He really likes shoujo animes. Chat Noir had quite a collection of miraculous figures. His favorite artist was Jagged Stone.
In return, he learned about her.
Her favorite artist was also Jagged Stone. She also had some of those figures. Her fear of doctors.
Ladybug found herself admitting that she was envious of her cousins who knew Chinese. Unlike her.
"I feel so embarrassed that even one of my non Chinese classmate knows it." Ladybug admitted.
"I can teach you some! I'm not the best but I take lots of lessons."
"That would be nice."
Though she did feel a bit of envy that Chat Noir knew Chinese also.
"Can I ask you something." Ladybug said. Yawning a bit too loud. Her body demanded sleep.
"I would think wisely. You sound quite delirious right now, My Lady. You're in need of a long cat nap."
Ladybug had to agree. The question would not leave her brain.
"Pretend that the classmate I mentioned before had a similar situation as you. Would you say that I did a good job comforting you?."
"It did. It really did."
Ladybug raised a fist in success.
"A friend once told me when you're stressed you can just scream. I was wondering. Maybe that's what we should do when we meet again"
"I would love that. Hawkmoth would have several victims thanks to your lovely idea."
"And we'll beat him as always."
Ladybug felt three words weigh heavily on her tongue. Unsure if she should say it or not. There was no reason to hold them back. They were true in every way. S he let those three words wrap in her heart.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
The call ended there. Ladybug detranformed. Marinette had the best sleep in weeks.
One Chapter left after this. I really like this chapters compared to the last fews. Hope you all do to!
