CHAPTER 25 - A NOTE
Watching the boy going through the deepest corners of his mind wasn't easy. Light was calm only for two minutes before he got visibly uncomfortable. He started breathing hard and he was scared of something. Moments later his face contorted in pain and he started sweating. L was ready to end the vision but then Light suddenly calmed down again. L decided to wait and let Light in his inner world for a bit longer.
Then Light started smiling. And not just a little but really smiling so L could see his teeth. That was really strange and confusing for L. He never saw Light smiling with teeth. He mostly smiled only with mouth closed and the corners of his mouth were shifting up. It was a cute and adorable smile which was making L's heart skip a beat everytime. But this… this was different. Even more beautiful and addictive.
Right… L thought and shook his head to stop thinking about things like this. He checked on time. The vision was already taking a little too long. According to his mother's notes, these visions usually took up to 3 minutes. Light was already long over that time.
L looked at Light again. The smile from his face was gone but there was something else now. L was not sure how to describe it but those slightly parted lips and head lightly tilted to the side looked like…
L swallowed hard.
Whatever the boy was doing in that dream was showing on his face now and L felt his own heart beat increasing. His inner alpha was also waking up and his senses started to scream at him to move forward and claim those pretty lips. L bit his inner cheek so hard that his mouth filled with blood.
Light's expression changed again. There was shock and fear and his body started trembling. He was going through something very intense and his whole being was trying to revolt against it.
"No… No, I don't want him to die!" Light said in distress and was pale with fear.
I don't want him to die? L repeated in his mind. What the hell is the kid seeing?
"Light… do you want me to end the vision?" L asked but the answer never came. Light was lost too deep in his vision and he didn't react to the outer world anymore. Before L could decide what to do, the fear from the boy's face disappeared and a different expression spreaded across his features. L couldn't sort it. Sadness, surprise, pain… then tears started falling down from Light's closed eyes. After that, he was still for quite a long time. He just kept crying.
L was watching him nervously. It was all so strange.
Why would he see someone die in his vision? What the hell his inner omega wants?
He checked the time again. It was taking too long and Light was now in this strange crying-frozen state for a few minutes already. L didn't want to stop the vision when Light got this far, but he couldn't help but worry that something went wrong.
Maybe I missed something in my mother's notes. This definitely isn't right. L thought and frowned at the crying boy who sat in front of him. His instincts were screaming at him to take the boy to his arms and calm him down.
I am giving him one last minute. If he wont wake up, I am pulling him out. L decided and literally felt the clock ticking.
59, 58, 57, 56, ….
After less than 30 seconds, Light suddenly covered his ears and then… he opened his eyes.
Light looked like he was going to pass out the very moment he snapped out of the vision, so L hurtled forward and caught him. He felt the boy shaking as he was holding him by shoulders to stabilize him. Whatever happened in that vision, must have been a terrible experience. L was highly concerned by that but he needed to calm Light down first, before he would ask him anything. So L just held his shoulders and started talking to him slowly and calmly: "You are safe, Light. You did great. You are back now and no one is going to hurt you…" He continued like that for a good minute before Light finally looked at him. Then, it was like something snapped inside the boy, because he started sobbing desperately and hurtled forward.
When Light came back to reality he was panting hard and his sight was blurred by tears. His eyes landed on Lawliet, who was kneeling right in front of him and saying something. Light couldn't understand the words but he knew he was trying to calm him down. The spicy-sweet scent was everywhere around him, sending powerful soothing waves. It took a good minute for Light to come fully back to himself. Then he realized that Lawliet was holding him by his shoulders and drawing small circles by his thumbs. His touch was warm and calming.
"See… everything is alright. You are safe, Light. No one can hurt you." Lawliet said and Light looked his professor in the eyes.
The moment their eyes locked Light felt like exploding inside him. Lawliet gave him a small smirk but his eyes were full of concern. The man had no idea that in his vision, Light was the one who took life from his eyes. Light's throat closed on him when he remembered those eyes without life. Waves of strong emotions went through his body and before he knew it he was sobbing and burying his face into Lawliet's shoulder.
The moment Light moved forward and started crying on his shoulder L felt like his whole world disappeared. His heart almost stopped and he was overwhelmed by strong emotions and needed to soothe the young omega. His body moved completely on instinct. His hands flew around the small of the boy's back and he drew Light into his arms completely. Within seconds, Light Yagami was sitting in his lap, holding his hands around L's neck, his face buried in L's shoulder and he was crying hysterically.
L started slowly caressing his back and whispering to his ear: "It's okay, darling… nothing is going to happen to you. I am here. I'll keep you safe."
He knew he shouldn't be doing it. He shouldn't be having his teenage student in his lap. He shouldn't be touching him this way. He shouldn't be calling him darling . But he couldn't stop.
"I am with you, baby, no one will hurt you…" L heard himself saying and even when he was acting against his better judgement, he meant every word.
Light was calming down very slowly. Even after a few minutes he spent in L's arms he was still trembling and crying. And the longer L had the boy in his arms, the harder it was for him. He had to argue with himself, that he was doing the right thing. That Light needed an alpha now. But when one of his hands went up to caress Light's silky hair and when he found himself sniffing the boy's hair, he knew there was nothing reasonable about it. He was fucking loosing his sanity with Light in his lap. He was only thanking God that Light's sweater had a turtleneck. Because the boy tried to nuzzle on his neck glands a few times. Luckily, he didn't have access there. Because if they would ever touch each other's scent glands, everything would go to hell. Light was too tempting even without a scent. L was quite sure at this point that they were somehow biologically compatible and L's inner alpha sure he wouldn't be able to restrain. It would be up to L to keep away and L himself must have admitted that…
He swallowed hard.
No… No! I DON'T want him! I am NOT growing feelings towards him. Watari is wrong. It's just pure nature… He was again trying to persuade himself.
While L was busy thinking about his conflicted feelings towards the boy, the sobs stopped and the grip around L's neck loosened.
"Light?" L asked and in that moment Light's whole body went limp. L shifted and Light's face fell from his shoulder. He was unconscious. L was not sure if he fell asleep or fainted. He quickly checked his breathing and everything seemed alright.
L chuckled while he was studying the boy in his arms: "I said I wont catch you if you faint. But you had to be stubborn about it and prove me wrong, hadn't you?"
There was no answer of course. But L didn't expect any. He knew Light fell asleep from exhaustion. L took a deep breath, before standing up and lifting the boy bridal style.
"Alright, sleeping beauty, time to go to bed."
Finding Light's room wasn't hard. At first, L was a bit afraid he might accidentally bump into a student while carrying Light, but then he realized that the only other omega in Ravenclaw was Near. And he would be able to explain the situation to him.
If you will be able to explain it to yourself first… His inner alpha offered somewhere from the deep dark corner of his mind and L completely ignored him. It was all his fault anyway.
L's wand made a tracking spell, because L had his hands full, but the boy's bedroom turned out to be the first door under the attic anyway. The wand opened the door and L brought Light in. He looked around quickly, to analyze the space.
Light's room was quite big for a single student but then again, there was plenty room for omegas in the tower and only two omegan male students in Ravenclaw. Light obviously put some wizarding effort to get rid of two other beds in the room and turned it into a king size bed. His working desk was also bigger than a normal school desk and full of books. That was probably the only messy place. The rest of the room seemed strictly organized and quite steril. No posters, no decorations, just a single family photo on the bedside table.
"A bit austere for an omega…" L mumbled to himself and headed towards bed: "... but why am I even surprised?" He asked and slowly put the boy on a bed. Then he stayed kneeling next to the bed, while resting his elbows there and watching the boy. Light was pale, had dark bags under his eyes and looked troubled. He seemed so fragile that L's heart clenched.
"You are still pushing yourself over the edge, aren't you?" He whispered with a soft tone that he didn't know he was able to produce.
L's wand didn't wait for L to wake up from his hypnose and made a spell to take off the boy's shoes and then put covers over him.
"Thank you." L whispered towards the wand and the wand painted a heart in the air in response. But L didn't see it. He never took his eyes off Light's face. Even tired he looked pretty. L reached out and removed a strand of hair from Light's face. His hair was unbelievably soft. Like silk.
Light shivered under the touch and his lips slightly parted. L's eyes widened when he watched the boy's lips parting and he swallowed hard. It wasn't the first time that night he felt the strong pull forward and wanted to press his lips to Light's. L felt his heart rate increasing and he licked his own lips. The pull was unbelievably strong and it was erasing L's ability to think. Without realizing it, he started leaning in… shifting his face closer and closer. His nose brushed against Light's. L needed only millimeters to taste those lips and get completely lost in this young, beautiful, captivating creature.
Then… L felt like someone was watching him. He froze in a place and shifted his eyes behind Light from where he felt the sight coming. His eyes fell on a Yagami family photo on the bedside table. Those strict eyes that L felt on himself were ones of Soichiro Yagami. He was frowning straight at him from the photo. That was enough for L to snap out of his desires. He immediately backed off.
What he fuck Am I doing?! He yelled internally and quickly headed to the door. His wand was turning between its master and the sleeping boy in confusion. It decided to go after L but bumped into him, when he suddenly turned around in the doorframe.
L caught the wand and headed back to the bed. He was pissed at himself for almost losing control and wanted to flee as fast as he could. But he remembered the situation Light was through that night. He will have a lot of questions when he wakes up and there was no way L could leave him without a note. He quickly conjured paper and quill and wanted to scribble a note. But he was not sure what to write for a while. He decided to keep it simple. They could talk later. When Light is ready. And when L will think through how to keep his urges under control.
He wrote a note but he was not sure where to leave it for Light to find it in the morning. He was looking around and thought about the table. But there was no guarantee Light would go there in the morning. So L conjured a small tray, put the note on it and Wingardium leviosa it next to the bed. He was about to leave when his wand ripped of his grip and flew back to the bed.
"What?!" L spat and watched the wand conjuring even a bigger plate with... breakfast.
Breakfast.
Two croissants with butter and jam, hot chocolate and a glass of orange juice. Then the wand made L's note slowly flow from the small tray to the breakfast tray and L's original tray disappeared.
L was clenching his fists in irritation and watched as the wand drew a heart in the air.
"Great, you genius… now add a rose and my doom is sealed." L hissed sarcastically.
But the wand didn't understand irony or sarcasm. Instead of backing off it really conjured a small vase with a red rose and added it on a floating breakfast tray.
At that point L was raging. He knew that his wand was learning from his behavior and if the wand thought L would want to do something like this for Light, he was truly screwed. He needed to get out of there. He needed to breathe and think.
"Whatever…" he hissed and headed back to the attic. His wand silently closed the door to the boy's room and followed L so he could portkey himself away.
"I need to work more… yes, that's it. I need to take another case. Teaching is obviously not taking all my attention so it's natural that I am trying to find entertainment elsewhere." L started arguing with himself immediately after he portkeyed himself in front of the castle. Using a portkey was forbidden inside the castle so he could only transport himself outside or on the rooftops.
"I definitely have to keep distance from him. Because what happened tonight was… What the hell was I thinking?" L was mumbling to himself and he was unbelievably angry.
You were not thinking. You saw what you wanted and you were ready to take it. Another voice in his mind offered.
"Shut up! Shut up! It's all your fault anyway." L repeated to his inner alpha angrily and walked towards the entrance to the castle. His wand was flying behind him but at one point it flew in front of him and made him stop his pace.
"What?!" L spat at the wand and tilted his head as the wand pointed to the four hourglasses he just crossed at the entrance hall.
L closed his eyes and cursed under his breath. In the heat of the events he completely forgot about the house points. He promised Watari he will finally give his points after the Halloween tourney is done.
L's wand was furiously flying around and pointing to the hourglasses to remind him about it.
"Yes, yes… I know!" L let out and rolled his eyes.
Damn… he thought and caught the want to his hand: "Accio evaluation notebook."
Within seconds the small notebook from his office appeared in his hands. He opened it and immediately hesitated. He still didn't know what to do with Light's points. Everything about that boy was complicated and was driving him crazy. So he decided to start from the first year. Like that he could postpone the decision for a few more minutes.
L made his notebook levite next to him and his wand started fastly flying from one hourglass to the other, as L was reading houses, students' names and amount of points. With each movement of the wand the colorful gems fell down from the upper bulb to the lower and the lower bulbs started slowly filling up. At the same time names of pupils' who got the points were automatically written to the big evaluation book that laid next to each hourglass.
It took 10 minutes for L to get through all the names and points he had in his notebook. He cursed himself that he didn't do it sooner. Finally, he got to the points of seventh year. He got through all the names and points and also gave extra 50 points to Misa Amane for winning the tourney. He almost forgot about that. Then… there was only one name left to deal with.
Yagami Light.
L closed his eyes and his head fell back. He breathed out a long frustrated breath before opening his eyes and eying the ceiling. L managed to get the boy from his mind for 10 minutes and now he was back there. Sitting in L's head like it was his nest.
I have to think straight… he told himself. He needed to think as a teacher and not as… a man... alpha… himself.
I said if Light will get through the tourney I will give him all the points. And he got through. Not only… he won and managed to synchronize with his inner omega. Even more than that… he managed to get through the whole vision later on.
If L was looking at the situation from this point of view, there was really no reason why not to give the points. Light was doing milesteps forward in his studies. If L would cut his points he would also have to cut points for everyone because Light…
"Damn you, Yagami… you are the best of them all." L let out in whisper and watched the wand floating in the air and waiting.
"Ah fuck it…" L said and read out loud: "Yagami Light, 250 points for class assignments, 50 for winning the tourney and 20 for… for the effort."
L watched the Ravenclaw's bulb filling with blue gems almost to the top.
He raised an eyebrow and chuckled: "We will need larger hourglasses."
A few minutes later L finally got to DADA classroom. After this night he felt more tired than normally and he was seriously determined to go to sleep. Which was not happening often. He felt like he needed to sleep off all the emotions that were boiling inside of him. Because a certain boy was still making his way to the front of his mind and L found himself thinking about how scared Light was. And how L was overwhelmed by the need to help him. The weight of the situation finally fell down on L and he started worrying about what Light might do, when he realizes L was touching him so intimately and called him...
"Shit… I called him darling! Shit. Shit. Shiiiiiit!" L cursed out loud and headed to his cabinet. The truth was, L couldn't imagine Light's reaction. Because his stupid attempts on flirting were one thing, but him holding Light in his lap, caressing his back and hair were something completely different. In a way, they got physical. Which was exactly what L wanted to avoid. They will have to talk about this and it was gonna be hell awkward.
"Well… maybe he will just sue me right away and the situation will solve itself…" he told himself while opening a door to his cabinet.
The cold air immediately punched him in the face and he caught his wand to his hand in alertness. The window was open and the curtain was moving in the cold autumn wind. Someone was there. In his cabinet.
L immediately made a few defensive spells around himself and then tried a spell to reveal the person. But he found no one. Even the tracking charm didn't reveal anything. Whoever was there was careful enough not to leave a trace.
L moved to close the window and started searching through the cabinet the old way, in a hope to find something. But he didn't need to search for long as the answer was laying on his desk. There was a note saying:
"Meet me at the Shrieking Shack. The 1st of November, 8 PM."
L's eyes widen. He knew that handwriting. He saw it before somewhere. He checked the time. He had exactly 17 hours to figure out who he was meeting with and prepare himself for it. His brain immediately switched into a full Auror mode.
Finally… something is going on. He thought and smirked.
Mmm… So what do you think? What will happen next? Who left L the note? :O I am so looking forward to your comments!
Be safe! J.
