A heads up: I imagine this chapter chronologically takes place soon after chapter 15 of this fic, hence why Amakusa's attitude is different compared to before. Because all the events in Part 2 up until this point had purposefully avoided canonically occurring during it, the relationship between him and Gudako hasn't progressed much. However, given that Servants finally show up again with Lostbelt 3 done, I figured I should set the mood right for when progress does occur!
Anyways, all that aside, I hope you enjoy this chapter!
Gudako was very confused.
Since the oni apparently didn't recognize the members of their group when split up, to take a peaceful break everyone had gone their separate ways. Gudako ended up coming along with Amakusa and the child Servants, and it had been peaceful so far.
But Amakusa was behaving… odd. Gudako had helped him look after the child Servants plenty of times so far, yet for the first time his attention wasn't focused solely on the kids. Of course he wasn't slacking off either: he made sure everyone stuck together with their buddy, and they always did a headcount before and after heading to a new attraction.
But for some reason, every moment he got a break – like when the kids were in a ride, waiting in line to buy snacks, or sitting at a table to eat said snacks – he immediately stuck with Gudako. He kept trying to spend every second he wasn't watching the kids with her, and if she didn't know better the young master would've almost thought he was flirting with her.
She dismissed the notion the moment it popped up, but she couldn't deny he was clearly paying more attention to her than he usually did.
Gudako liked Amakusa romantically, but because she knew her job at Chaldea would be ending soon, she'd decided – and reaffirmed her decision many times – to not act on her feelings.
That determination faltered when the Ruler was acting like this however, and she feared she wouldn't be able to keep it up at this rate.
So far, at least, she'd managed to deflect his advances with more than a little oblivious help from the kids:
When Amakusa tried to sit next to her at a table in the food court, Jack and Nursery Rhyme immediately took the spots besides her.
When he tried to get in the same Ferris wheel cabin as her, Paul Bunyan stepped in first and immediately grew large enough to take up all the space besides where Gudako was sitting.
In the haunted house, Jeanne Alter Lily and Ibaraki (whom Amakusa had just given some candy to take her mind off of the fact that she was in the 'child servant' group) were clutching his hands so tightly Gudako could've sworn she heard his bones creak, and he could hardly let one of them go to hold her hand when she wasn't even scared.
Admittedly she'd held his hand while she was taking a look at it afterwards to check if he hadn't actually broken something, but he was already busy reassuring a tearful Jeanne Alter Santa Lily who was still apologizing to him.
However, it seemed that she was finally left with no way out.
As the teacup spun round and round, so did Gudako's eyes as she desperately tried to avoid Amakusa's gaze as was seated opposite of her.
Originally some of the kids were supposed to get into the same spinning teacup, but Alexander got distracted by the merry-go-round (again), Wu Zetian by a food stall selling toffee, and (Kid) Gilgamesh had given the two of them a very knowing look before stepping out of the cup at the last possible moment.
He certainly didn't seem to feel guilty when Gudako could see him smiling and waving at her from besides the attraction, ignoring the scolding of an oni about leaving the attraction at that moment.
"That certainly was a surprise when he suddenly walked out of the cup before the door closed, wasn't it?" Amakusa tried to break the awkward silence with some small talk.
Gudako's reply was a short "yes".
"… Still, it's good to see everyone enjoying themselves. Regardless of the cause, I think it's a good thing everyone got the chance to enjoy an amusement park like this."
"Uh-huh." Gudako still wasn't looking at him.
"By the way, Kiyohime has been complaining that she hasn't had the chance to snoop around your room lately. Would you be alright with me turning off the anti-stalker measures so she can raid your drawers again?"
"Sure."
"…"
"…"
Gudako thought she could see Amakusa frowning from the corner of her eye, no doubt annoyed with how much she'd been avoiding him, but she tried to pretend she didn't see it.
"… I quite enjoy this attraction, actually," Amakusa finally spoke again in his usual tone of voice. Gudako glanced at him to see he was wearing his usual smile. Had she been mistaken about seeing that frown earlier…?
"This," he said as he pointed at the wheel in the middle, "is to spin the cup harder, right?"
"That's right."
As Amakusa grabbed the wheel he said: "I wonder just how fast this can spin." The moment he said that Gudako realized where he was going with this, but she was still too late to brace herself.
Amakusa gave on hard tug on the wheel with what Gudako could have sworn was all of his strength, and suddenly the cup was spinning so hard that Gudako couldn't see the area outside of it as anything but a giant blur. She let out a surprised scream as she was practically flung from her spot, though thankfully she came to a gentle stop.
Less thankfully, it was such a gentle stop because Amakusa caught her in his arms before she could slam full-force into his side.
Far too close to her with her face pressed against his chest, Amakusa chuckled: "I'm sorry about startling you like that. I didn't expect it to go this fast."
Gudako would've called him a liar if she wasn't busy paying more attention than she should've at how pleasant it was being hugged by the guy she liked.
She would've moved away as well, but the force of the spin was making it difficult to stand up to move to another spot, and her legs that were reluctant to carry her away from this warm embrace weren't helping her efforts.
Her heart was beating like crazy and her face was heating up as Amakusa spoke again – she was too distracted by his breath brushing against her hair and forehead to listen to what.
Gudako knew that if she didn't do something about this situation, an escalation was going to be inevitable.
But at the same time, actually speaking up and rejecting any possibility of feelings growing between them – because by this point it certainly started feeling like the Ruler saw her as more than just his Master – was something she just couldn't bring herself to do.
And so, gathering the last of her willpower, Gudako's hand moved to grab the wheel in the middle and pulled herself towards it, out of his arms.
The chilly autumn wind hitting her head-on now that she wasn't shielded by him made her feel instant regret, but she was committed to her course of action now. Sadly enough the wind wasn't cold enough to cool off her burning head, and Gudako was desperately looking for anything to say to break the awkward silence now that she'd ruined the moment.
And so, panicking a little, she told Amakusa: "You know, the spinning teacups is actually my favorite attraction!" She couldn't bring herself to look back at Amakusa, but she imagined his expression was probably a disappointed one. She tried not to imagine it to save herself from even more regret.
"I especially like it when it's spinning like crazy," she added before starting to spin the wheel.
She may not have had the strength of a Servant, but to make up for it she just didn't stop spinning. Even as the cup was going so fast that it was difficult to stay upright, she continued spinning it harder and harder, using every ounce of her strength.
"Um, Master, it already appears to be spinning like crazy," Amakusa said, sounding concerned. But Gudako just continued.
In the end, she didn't stop until the attraction itself did.
What came after was just her reaping what she sowed, really.
Gudako was sitting on a bench in the park, doubled over and hoping that the world would stop spinning soon.
Amakusa was sitting right next to her rubbing her back, but there was nothing romantic about the current situation. If anything it was mortifying how after all of that spinning, Gudako stumbled out of the teacup with a green face and barely holding back the popcorn, churros and sorbets she'd eaten not that long ago (she hadn't been to an amusement park for years, even before humanity's incineration, so she let herself go a little along with the kids).
Her only comfort was that at least some of the attention on her situation was taken away by the fact that Illya and Chloe had apparently gone through a similar enough experience in their teacup, both stumbling around with green faces as well.
Apparently the young Master had looked so bad that all of the kid Servants took pity on her, and Emiya and Boudica agreed to look after them while Amakusa made sure she was alright.
As the Ruler was soothingly patting her back, Gudako really felt regretful for how she'd been acting.
Sure, his behavior made her feel over-conscious and nervous. Her unresolved feelings for him were her own problem, not anyone else's, especially when he'd done nothing even remotely untoward to her. She'd been feeling so conflicted she never even asked him to stop, which he surely would have on her request!
Yet here she was, letting down the kids and preventing Amakusa from enjoying the amusement park because she'd made a stupid decision in a panic. The more she thought about it, the more she wondered if she felt worse because she was on the verge of throwing up or because of how she'd messed up.
"Would you like some water?" Amakusa gently asked, unaware of the guilt she was struggling with as much as the nausea.
"No," Gudako gulped as she lightly shook her head, "but thanks for the thought."
It took a few more minutes, but finally Gudako felt good enough to sit up straight.
Amakusa took this chance to tell her: "I'm sorry. I'm aware that it was my behavior that made you panic and caused this, and I'm sorry if I've made you uncomfortable. I should've stopped when I noticed you were trying to avoid talking to me, but I…"
"No, you don't need to worry: you didn't make me uncomfortable, that's not it." Gudako couldn't really admit that he was instead making her a bit too comfortable back in the teacup.
Instead, she said: "I just… I'm not used to you acting like that, so I just got confused and overreacted. I should be the one apologizing for that really. I promise I won't do something stupid like that next time."
"Hah, it wasn't that bad…"
"No, it definitely was. I'm so embarrassed…"
Despite saying that Gudako felt a laugh bubbling up, and they both chuckled over it.
"I'm glad to see you're feeling better now."
"Yes, thank you for looking after me."
The awkwardness now gone, they both sat in companionable silence for a while. Amakusa was the first one to speak again.
"… You mentioned a 'next time' just now. Does that mean you'd like me to try again?" There was no question about what he'd be trying again, and how he leaned a little towards her, their hands on the bench brushing together only emphasized it.
On one hand, Gudako had just made herself so dizzy she was about to puke just to get out of this kind of situation.
On the other hand, she honestly did want to see where this would go…
Before she could make a decision however…
"Master!"
They both looked up to see Abigail trotting towards them, a relieved expression on her face.
"I'm happy you're looking better now!"
"Yes, I'm fine now."
"You're not with any of the others?" Amakusa asked.
"That's right. Did you get separated?"
"That's right," Abigail admitted sheepishly as she nudged a pebble with her foot.
"I was worrying about what to do when I remembered you took a seat near the teacups, and thankfully you're still here. I… Hope I'm not bothering you…"
"No, it's fine," Amakusa and Gudako said at the same time.
They shared a surprised look, but Amakusa smoothly continued: "We'll help you find the others." Abigail giggled at how in synch they were before thanking the both of them.
so, with Gudako holding Abigail's one hand and Amakusa the other they started walking, the earlier awkwardness long forgotten.
Gudako's face did go bright red again when a passing woman wondered if they were a young family, but at least Amakusa didn't laugh too loudly at her expense.
