Chapter 24: The Forests of Ithilien
In the forests of Ithilien, a strip of land between Gondor and Mordor, Gollum continued to lead Ethan and Conner to his secret entrance that he spoke of. Along the way, Gollum tries to catch a fish in the river. He slid around on his belly, amidst a lot of splashing, trying to keep hold of the slippery creature. Ethan and Conner were right behind him. Conner however, was unpleased with Gollum's recreational activity.
.
"Hey, Stinker," said Conner, "don't go getting too far ahead!"
…why do you do that?" Ethan cut in
"What?" asked Conner.
"Call him names," replied Ethan, impatiently, "run him down all the time."
"Because," answered Conner as he looked back at Gollum, to be sure he was still in sight, "…because that's what he is, Ethan. There's naught left in 'im but lies and deceit. It's the ring he wants… it's all he cares about."
Ethan walked a little ways from Conner, looking with sympathy at Gollum.
"you have no idea what the ring did to him… what it's still doing to him. I want to help him."
"Why?" asked Conner.
Ethan paused as he looked with sympathy at Gollum, who smiled back at him before replying, "…because I have to believe he can come back."
Conner went on as he walked up to Ethan, "…you can't save him, Ethan."
"What do you know about it, nothing!" Frodo snapped at Conner.
. Conner, feeling hurt by Ethan's outburst turned and slowly walked away from Ethan. Ethan suddenly felt regretful about what he said to Conner. Ethan then remembered, this was Conner, his Conner. And he was not Gollum. Not yet at least… and he didn't want to be.
.
"…I'm sorry, Conner," said Ethan, with remorse, "I don't know why I said that."
"I do," said Conner, as he turned back to Ethan, with tears in his eyes, "…it's the ring. You can't take your eyes off it. I've seen you. You're not eating, you barely sleep."
Conner concluded, as he walked back over to Ethan, "…it's taking a hold of you, Ethan. You have to fight it!"
Ethan felt intimidated by Conner's remarks.
"…I know what I have to do, Conner. The ring was entrusted to me…!"
Ethan then stormed off as he fiercely ranted, "…it's my task! Mine! My own!"
Ethan continued to walk away from Conner.
"Can't you hear yourself?" Conner called out, "don't you know who you sound like?!"
But Ethan wouldn't look back.
