"You're going to be the death of me," Rose says with a smile as Scorpius brings his arms around her.
"I certainly hope so," he murmurs into her shoulder and she laughs.
The truth is, it isn't particularly funny. This is actually going to be the death of her. Both of them are going to meet their physical end if anyone ever finds out. The thought should terrify her, but frankly, most of her reasonable thinking just flies out of the window whenever he's with her.
After all, she's Princess Rose Weasley of Hogwarts and she's getting married to Prince—and soon King—Lorcan Scamander of Ilvermorny. It's a match made in heaven: they're old family friends, he's the heir of one of the most powerful Kingdoms of the world, and her family desperately needs the money and the protection of his family. Rose and him are actually on friendly terms.
And yet, here she is in Lord Scorpius Malfoy of Slytherin's arms, feeling the most happy she's ever been. She even wearing her wedding dress—white, as is custom—right now. Every thing about this is forbidden…
"That's quite the dress you've got on," he tells her, once he lets her go.
"You think so?"
"It's certainly something," he says.
Rose pauses, and looks at herself in the mirror. She's dismissed her maids, claiming that she wanted to spend a moment in the dress, enjoying herself. Truth is, she wanted to spend a moment with Scorpius, and she hopes her three maids don't come back anytime soon.
"Good something, or bad something?" she asks, her voice teasing.
Scorpius meets her eyes in the mirror. "Do you like it?" Clearly, he's avoiding the question and the thought makes her smile.
"No, I don't," she admits.
Scorpius laughs. "Oh, thank goodness. Because I absolutely hate it. You look like an over-dressed meringue."
The dress is white has an ornate lace body which constricts her breathing, and so many layers of tulle that she can barely fit through doors. It supposed to be traditional, at least that's how it is in Ilvermorny.
"Hey!" she exclaims.
"Just joking, darling. You look stunning," he tells her. "You always do."
She turns back to look at him, truly. Not just through the mirror. He smiles kindly at her, though the teasing amusement is still in his eyes. Those grey eyes, exactly the same as his father's. Speaking of his father, she can't help but be reminded of just exactly how much this relationship is forbidden.
The Malfoys are part of the Hogwarts Court, but only because of their title and their money. If her parents could, they'd get rid of them immediately. There's bad blood between the Malfoys and the Weasleys. But they're still there. King Ronald had warned Rose off them many times, and yet, her heart still goes to Scorpius.
"You know," she starts, "If I could pick it out, I'd want a blue dress."
"Blue?"
"Yes. None of that tacky white," she says with a grimace and he snorts. "And something very light, with none of this tulle."
"Can't you ask them to change it?" he asks.
She sighs, shaking her head.
"Oh."
Truth is, she still doesn't know why he sticks with her. She's tried to break it off, break his heart for good so that she can do her best to embrace her new life without him. And yet, every time, he comes back. She's absolutely overjoyed, every time. But that doesn't mean the wedding is cancelled.
"If it was our wedding," he says with a whisper.
"Scorpius!" she exclaims.
"You could wear anything you want," he finishes.
She looks up at him sadly. "But it can't be."
He opens his mouth to say something, but suddenly, they hear footsteps in the corridor. He gives her a last look full of regrets, presses a quick kiss to her brow and escapes into her ante-chamber. There's a secret passage there, that'll allow him to leave unnoticed. They'd discovered it a few months back and it's been ever so practical.
The door opens and Sophie, her head maid, comes in. "Everything alright, your highness?"
Rose nods and forces her lips into a smile. "Oh, isn't it just lovely?" she gushes.
"You look stunning, your highness."
Sophie helps her unpin the dress and slip into her evening wear. Rose can't help but be glad when the white monstrosity is taken away from her. She hates it. She hates it so much. More than anything, she wishes it would be blue, and that she was marrying someone different.
But she isn't. So, she has to bear the white, at least for the moment.
