Sophie immediately realized her mistake. That one thought was like a signal flair, so sharp and clear that Gethen was automatically aware of her presence. But she didn't care, as the discovery seemed much more important at the time.
Sophie's consciousness was cast out of Gethen's mind, allowing her to fall back into our own.
She was weak, barely able to stand, let alone battle the telepath.
The pain from moments earlier was still lingering in her mind, leaving the ability to think straight just out of reach. But there was one thing that she understood, Gethen was her biological father, a part of Project Moonlark. It made so much sense, but so little all the same.
Sophie needed to speak up, needed answers.
Gethen just stood there, his head hung. "So now you know." he said slowly.
"Know what?" Sophie spat back. "That you've been lying to my face? Torturing me while you've known the entire time th- that..." her voice broke, but she stood her ground.
He sighed, "You don't understand." As he spoke, Sophie could believe for the first time, that the cruel murderer actually had emotions. But the sympathy quickly vanished.
"Your right, I don't! I don't understand how you could've joined the Neverseen, knowing that you would battle your own blood! I don't understand how you can look me in the eye while striping away everything, everyone that I care about! I don't understand what could've driven you to turn your back on this world, to take lives!" she screamed.
"This world is broken!" he yelled. "Everything was taken from me, my family, my whole world! And it was all their fault! The humans are a disease! All they do is destroy! And yet I was labeled a criminal for fighting back!"
Tears coated Sophie's cheeks, but she hardly noticed. "And even after experiencing loss, you still think yourself to be justified letting others go through that pain?" she asked.
His anger faltered, replaced with doubt. "It's a small price to pay for freedom." he finally answered, although he seemed to be trying to convince himself as much as Sophie.
"Then it looks like there's nothing left to say."
Keefe narrowed his eyes, suspecting a hidden motive, but his desperation prevailed. He looked at each of his friends and nodded, "What do you want you know?"
A smile colder than the room curled Fintan's lips, along with a glint in his eye that almost made Keefe regret accepting the offer.
"Have you figured it out yet?" Fintan asked.
Keefe's heart started racing, but he maintained his composure. "What are you talking about?" he asked.
"I guess not," Fintan concluded with fained sympathy.
"You all look at me like I am a monster, a murderer, but that is another lie told to you by the Black Swan."
Keefe couldn't believe it, as in, he didn't. "Said the one who killed Kenric." he said, attempting to keep his voice under control, but he had a feeling that this conversation would end with Fintan unconscious.
"Ah but did I?"
"Yes, you did. I was there." replied Fitz.
"But where were you when dear Kenric actually died?" he asked. Fitz didn't seem to have a response to that.
"The counselor is not dead as you believe." said Fintan. "Well, I guess the counselor is, but not Kenric." he added. Keefe was getting really tired of the cryptic clues, "What are you implying?" he asked.
Fintan's expression seemed to become even more ominous, if that was possible. "Kenric is one of your secretive leader's many identities."
The realization of Fintan's claim, knocked Keefe back multiple steps. Mr. Forkle is Kenric?
"Don't look so surprised." said Fintan. "It was fairly obvious. That fool isn't as good as keeping secrets as he thinks he is. I guarantee that, if you think back, you'll discover many occasions where you will curse yourself for missing his slip ups." he added.
"The Black Swan isn't as noble and innocent as you think them to be. They lie, kill, and place children in the line of fire to do their dirty work."
Keefe was still in shock, but managed to come up with a reply, "Why should we take your word to be the truth? Even if the Black Swan isn't completely innocent, no matter what, they are still better than you and your little band of evil!"
"Believe what you want, but sooner or later you'll realize that your fighting for the wrong side, boy."
That was it. Keefe lost it, "Shut up!"
Suddenly, Fintan's eyes rolled back into head, and his body went limp. But what surprised Keefe most, was the fact that it was only him. His friends were fine. I- I can control it.
Keefe took a deep breath, and put his overwhelming emotions into another word, "Awake,"
Fintan than woke up, a wild look of fear in his eyes.
And with that, they left the prison, and the psycho inhibiting it, behind.
But what if he was an honest psycho?
