Hey everyone! I'm back with another chapter! Thanks for reading and enjoy the story! Let me know what you think in the comments!
I heard the shuffle of foot steps in my room but I was too tired to open my eyes and see who it was. I , curling up and pulling the blankets tighter around me, burying my face in them. My hands and feet were ice cold, I was sweating a bit, but I was much too cold come out from under the covers. Something brushed against my face. I shrunk back with a groan and clenched my eyes shut tighter.
Erin... I heard a voice. I was dreaming for sure. No one had said my name like that in a long time. It was the way my mom always talked to me. When she was waking me up, calling me in for dinner, congratulating me on some small and inconsequential achievement. It was a haunting kind of tone.
Erin, it's time to get up... The voice calling to me was too deep and husky to be my mother though, so the thoughts of her were soon gone and I thought of my father. He often was not around for the mornings, going on calls to help the sick, traveling far to check ups, etc. This tone in a deeper voice like his was strange and un welcome.
Erin, please, get up... I knew better than to believe this voice belonged to either of my parents, so I ignored it, I had yet to open my eyes, kept the closed tight, and let myself fall into a deeper sleep.
I wasn't sure how much time passed when I got out of bed. I walked to my window, pushing open the wooden shudders, and leaning against the window sil as I looked up at the sky.
It was dawn, the sun was just barely poking over the horizon, and the colors that danced across the sky were beautiful. It was pink and orange, yellow and blue with a thick, glowing red outline around the nearly white looking sun. It was so bright, I couldn't keep my eyes open as I looked at it. I had to look away, and look back, over and over to know how it looked in full. The 5 measly seconds I started with were not nearly enough.
"Erin?"
I stood up straight, turning around to look at the man behind me with a smile, "Good Morning, Levi."
He was holding a tray with tea and a satchel full of papers. He approached slowly, like he was afraid I would disappear at his touch. I guess this is a new phenomenon with him. My disappearing act must have been a bit more traumatic for him than I realized.
"Erin..." he put the satchel down on my chair and the tray down on the table top. He put a hand out, grabbing my shoulder roughly.
"Are you okay, Levi?" I reached up to touch his forehead and check him for a fever, but he just grabbed me with both of his hands and held me tight.
"You're awake." he mumbled.
"Yeah, I just woke up. Ms. Zoë really wore me out with those experiments. Is everything okay?" I asked.
"You were sick." he said, he didn't elaborate anymore no matter how much I poked and prodded at him for the hour afterward. I must have worried him, I felt bad.
At breakfast that morning, Levi's squad was happy to see me, Petra especially. She said that having me around was nice because it gave her a break from the four little boys in the squad. That made me laugh because she was calling Levi a bothersome little boy too.
After a nice long chat over breakfast, Levi dragged me off to the infirmary for a check up. They said I was fine, and he had nothing to worry about. Then I was dragged off to Ms. Zoë's office where Levi started demanding to know what she had done to me during the experiments.
I tried to calm him down, to tell him I was fine. I was just exhausted from using my titan form so many times, but he was convinced someone had done something horrible to me. I needed to know why, but for now he was still shut up like a clam.
"Levi..." I laid on his couch. It was almost midnight now. I was tired and wanted to go sleep in my bed, but he said no. I had to stay here where he could see me.
"Go to sleep."
"Let me go to my bed!" I argued.
"No."
"Why?!" I yelled, "Can you please just tell me why the hell I can't go to bed?"
He sighed and put a hand to his head.
"I've been asking you all day why I can't go anywhere without you. You tried to follow me into the freaking bathroom! What the hell is going on?!"
"Fine," he conceded, "You said some things while you were sleeping. I think you were having a nightmare. You were begging someone to stop, to leave you alone. Then you started crying and begging me to help you. I tried to wake you up so many times, but it didn't work and I just sat here listening to you begging and crying for hours."
I stood from the couch and approached him, nearly falling on top of him as I hugged him.
"Levi, I'm okay. I'm so sorry I did that to you. I promise nothing is wrong. It was probably just a nightmare about Kenny." I tightened my grasp on him, "I'm so sorry you had to listen to that."
"What did I tell you about apologies."
"I don't care, that must have been horrible for you. I promise I'm okay. Let's go to sleep now, okay. I know you can't sleep much, but I think you look like you need some rest right now. Let's go okay?"
"Fine."
I grabbed his arm, hauling him out of the chair and making him follow me up to his room. I gave him a hug and left off to my room.
When I woke up super early again the next morning, Levi was sitting in my chair. He had pulled it up next to my bed and held my hand in his with his head laying down on the edge of the bed.
"Levi..." I whispered.
"Hmmm..." he didn't move, he must have been exhausted.
"Come on."
I pulled his hand and he stood up, barely conscious as he sat down on the edge of the bed beside me.
"Go to sleep." I told him as I grabbed his shoulder and made him lay down beside me fine.
"Fine, brat."
"Good night." I said, ruffling his hair.
"Good night."
