After running around all day, it was nice to be back in the Peaceful Woods. The sky was teasing the first hints of sunset and the gentle snore of comatose yoshis was soothing. There were only a couple of loose ends to tie up and they would be done. It was almost a shame.
"Today's been fun," Daisy said. "Apart from all the near brushes with death."
"Nothing we can't handle," Waluigi said. "Though it galls me we have to rely on the power of dreams and stars to finish this."
"What's wrong with the stars?" Wanda said. "They're nicer than some people I could mention."
"Anyone can be nice," Waluigi said. "Doesn't mean you should be given the ultimate power over wishes. Would you trust me with that power if I pretended to be nice?"
Daisy found it hard to imagine Waluigi doing anything too awful with that sort of power.
"You? Sure. Couldn't be that bad. You spend so much time thinking about what's fair that I don't think you'd break anything. Now, if someone like WARIO got ahold of that power, I'd be worried."
"I'm insulted," Waluigi said. "You've competed against me. You should know better."
"There is something about the stars that creeps me out, though," Daisy said.
"Like how easily they could abuse their power?"
"No, it's the fact they're from outer space," Daisy said. "People from other planets make me uncomfortable. Like, how do you trust someone who's got no reason to care about what happens here?"
"What about Rosalina?" Waluigi said. "I hear she's from space."
"Do I trust an aloof mystical alien?" Daisy said. "Heck no! I'm not even sure if she's actually a princess! She's more like a weird cat lady, but with pudgy star babies instead."
"I like the challenge she presents at go-karts," Waluigi said.
"Yeah, I guess," Daisy said. "But how do we know she's not up to something?"
"I think Mario said something on TV about her doing… something to help save the world," Wanda said. "I'm still not exactly sure what happened, but it sounded important."
"Look, she's probably fine," Daisy said. "I just had a very traumatic experience with a space thug, alright? As far as I'm concerned, we have enough trouble here without having to import extra."
"Don't be spacist," Wanda said. "All life is precious."
"Yeah, it doesn't matter where people are from," Waluigi said. "Alien or local, they're all the same. None of them stand a chance against me."
Daisy chuckled. That was a philosophy she could get behind. "Alright," she said. "Not EVERYONE from space is a bad guy. But I think it's smart to be careful around anyone who introduces themself as a celestial power."
"Dreams are a fundamental building block of the universe," Waluigi said. "Wishes are dreams made reality. The Stars control which wishes come true, so whether we like it or not they control the universe. But they aren't any smarter than the rest of us. They just have more power. That's what I don't like about them."
"Okay," Wanda said. "But if we didn't have SOMEONE in charge of wishes then who's gonna stop bad stuff from happening? Wart found a way to cheat the system and look at the damage he's doing!"
"He wants something and he's trying to take it," Waluigi said. "I respect that. But the thing is we want something too. And we're going to stop him because our will is stronger than his. I like that better than a bunch of out-of-touch stars deciding which of us is 'good' or 'special.'"
Wanda shook her head. "But you're doing it for yourself. The stars at least TRY to make things good for everybody. If your dream is selfish, how can you be sure you're any better than Wart?"
"Because we're not stupid," Daisy said. "You think we're going to wreck our own planet to get what we want?"
"Wishes are powerful!" Wanda said. "If your heart isn't in the right place you could do damage without meaning to! That's why Mario is such a good hero. He just wants to help."
Waluigi rolled his eyes. "And I'm sure Princess Peach has nothing to do with it."
"Yeah!" Daisy said. "Don't lecture us about our own wishes. Everyone needs to be a little selfish or else they'd never wish in the first place. We're trying to stop an obvious bad guy. Isn't that enough?"
Wanda let out an exasperated sigh. "Please just be careful, okay?"
The three of them arrived at the yoshi village. They stepped over the comatose yoshis and pushed their way into the clearing where the Sundream Stone tablet was stored.
"Hey, uh. Wanda?" Daisy said. "Did we take a wrong turn or something? I thought Sunny's tablet was here."
Wanda zipped back and forth around the clearing with panic spreading across her face. "No! This is where it's kept! It's gone! The Sundream Stone is missing!"
Waluigi fished Sunny's face out of his overalls. Its eyes were closed like it was napping. Waluigi gave it a good shake to wake it up.
"Oh! Good morning," Sunny said with a yawn. "It feels like you found all my dream gems! Good job."
"I know that already!" Waluigi said. "Where's your body? Where did it go?!"
Sunny concentrated a moment and then looked confused. "Huh. That's odd!"
"What is?" Wanda said.
"I can't feel my body at all! That's not supposed to happen…" Sunny said. "It's not destroyed. I'd be DEAD if that were the case, haha! So that means it must be on another plane of existence."
Daisy bent over to study the ground. There were fresh tracks of tiny footprints going every which way in the mud.
"Looks like some minions came through here," Daisy said. "They must've hauled Sunny's body off to Subcon!"
"Waaagh!" Waluigi growled as he crammed Sunny back down his overalls. "Then we need to go back there and steal it back!"
Daisy's cell phone started vibrating in her pocket. She pulled it out and was surprised to see her father was calling her.
"Hello?"
"Oh! Oh, I can't believe this! Thank the Stars. Is this working? Daisy? Can you hear me? Hello?"
"Yeah, you're coming in fine," Daisy said. "Dad, can this wait? I'm kind of in the middle of something."
"No! Please don't hang up!" He was whimpering. "I'll never figure out how to call you again!"
"Alright, just calm down," she said. "What's going on?"
"You need to come back to Sarasaland RIGHT NOW!" dad said, desperation rising in his voice. "It's an emergency!"
