Kai sighed as he came upon his fifth dead end. He had given up on trying to find the "ghosts" underneath the town hall an hour ago, but he had gotten himself lost in the process.
"I'm never getting out of here," Kai grumbled as he turned around. When he came upon a four-way intersection, he groaned. All of the tunnels looked exactly the same and he didn't remember which way he had come. He decided to take a chance and went down the right-hand tunnel. About ten minutes later, just when he was about to turn around, he saw a metal door built into the metal wall. He could've easily missed the door if the gold handle hadn't been sticking out almost six inches. Curious, he cracked open the door.
Inside was yet another tunnel, but the walls were made of rock instead of metal.
"Hello?" Kai called.
Silence. Kai headed deeper into the tunnel. The flashlight on his cellphone went out.
"Of course," Kai said as he put his phone in his pocket. He decided to take a chance on the amount of flammable gasses inside the cavern and lit a small fire in his hand.
After a few minutes, he debated heading back, but his curiosity of where the tunnel went was strong. Two minutes later, he saw a light. As he approached the light, he heard a clanging sound. As he ran towards the light, the tunnel became bigger. He eventually came upon a large cavern. He saw a shack built into the rock wall. Just outside the shack were two people with long chains around their ankles that led inside the shack. They looked up when he entered the cavern. Kai gasped. They were spitting images of his parents. The three stared at each other.
"Who are you?" Ray asked after a while.
"Well, that's a long story," Kai said as he approached.
"Kai?" Maya asked.
"Sort of."
"Sort of? How are you sort of Kai?"
"Like I said, it's a long story, and I will be happy to tell it to you once we're back on the surface." Kai grabbed a hammer and used his powers to heat up the chains enough to where he could break through them.
"How did you get past the monster?" Ray asked as Kai freed him.
"What monster?" Kai listened hard, but he didn't hear anything. He quickly freed Maya.
"Thank you. How are you sort of Kai?" Maya asked.
"I told you, wait until we're on the surface. There's a tunnel this way."
"Why not just go up that ladder?" Ray pointed to a ladder on the wall opposite them.
"Where does that lead?"
Ray shrugged. Everyone ran over to the ladder. Maya climbed up first, then Ray, and Kai brought up the rear. They were about halfway up when something grabbed Kai and threw him into the ground. Kai felt his right shoulder snap and he screamed in pain. A huge claw pinned him down. Kai looked up as a large, thin, tall, white, scaly monster screamed in his face.
"Kai!" Ray jumped down. The monster glanced at him before turning back to Kai. As the creature opened its mouth, Kai blasted it with fire. The creature screamed and smacked Kai away. Kai flew into the wall before landing on the ground. The monster grabbed Kai's bad arm and bent it backwards. Kai's screams were drowned out by the monster's screams. It turned around and plucked a sword out of its bony hind leg. Ray pulled Kai up and they ran for the ladder. The creature growled at them, and Kai made a large fire around the base of the ladder. The monster stepped towards them but shirked back as Kai made the fire bigger.
"Are you okay?" Ray asked as Kai started to climb the ladder.
"No." Kai used all of his strength to make the fire tall enough to cover the entire height of the ladder. Slowly, the three climbed up the ladder. The monster tried a few times to reach through the fire to grab them, but Kai kept the flames tall and hot. Eventually, they came upon a grate. Maya struggled to lift it, but eventually, she managed to move it enough to where she could slip through. Once she was up, she scraped the grate over the floor so Kai and Ray could get through.
"What was that thing?" Kai asked as he pulled himself up. He collapsed on the ground. As his eyes adjusted to the dark, he realized they were in a janitor's closet.
"Someone's mutant experiment," Ray explained.
"Let's get out of here before that thing decides to burst through the floor." Maya unlocked the door. Ray helped Kai stand up. The trio slowly made their way down the dark hallway. It wasn't long before they found the front door, but it was locked. Kai pulled out his comm.
"Is anyone there?" Kai asked.
"Kai? Is that you?" Lloyd asked.
"Yeah. Listen, we're trapped in… Where are we?"
"Town hall," Maya said.
"We're trapped in the town hall. Can you please find someone to unlock this door?"
"I'll see what I can do. Are you alright?" Lloyd asked.
"No. My arm is pretty messed up, and my shoulder is dislocated."
"Okay. Just sit tight. I'll be there as soon as I can."
Kai slumped onto the floor. Ray and Maya sat down on either side of him. Maya rubbed his good shoulder.
"How are you sort of Kai?" Maya asked.
"There are two Ninjagos, and my friends and I were taken from our world and got trapped here, and the versions of us that live here are now trapped in our world. It's complicated, but we are looking into a way to switch us back," Kai explained.
"How long were we trapped down there?" Ray asked.
"I couldn't tell you. How did you get there anyway?"
"This guy kidnapped our children and said he would kill them if we didn't do as he said. He released them, but took us in their place," Maya said.
"Had us forge armor for some army," Ray added.
"I hope my babies are okay."
"They're fine. Like I said, your Kai and Nya are in my world, and Wu would never let anything happen to them," Kai said.
"Who's Wu?" Ray asked.
"Wu. Son of the First Spinjitzu Master. You two fought with him and Garmadon during the First Serpentine War. That's how you two met."
"No, we were childhood sweethearts. We grew up across the street from each other," Maya said.
"Our dads worked at the same factory, along with most everyone else in town," Ray explained.
"Factory?" Kai asked.
"Yes. I don't know why he thought we were blacksmiths."
"Because you are blacksmiths in my world."
"I see."
The trio talked for about another hour before the pain in Kai's arm became too much. He leaned against Maya and started to doze off. Maya stroked his hair. He woke up several times that night. Just before eight o'clock the next morning, someone finally arrived with a key.
"Woah. There really were people trapped in here. How did you get in here? Did Jerry forget to check the bathrooms again before locking up?"
"Look in the janitor's closet," Kai mumbled. He stood up and stretched. Lloyd ran inside.
"I'm so sorry, Kai. No one believed me," Lloyd said.
"You're fine. Lloyd, meet the ghosts underneath the town hall."
"Hi," Ray said.
Lloyd waved awkwardly before taking Kai's good arm to support him. Koko was waiting in her car outside.
"Back to the hospital, Mom," Lloyd said as he helped Kai into the front seat.
"Boy you ninja sure are accident-prone," Koko commented as Ray, Maya, and Lloyd climbed into the backseat.
"Who else is hurt?" Kai asked.
"Jay. He and Zane had a run-in with a kraken. Dr. Julien is trying to fix Zane, but we haven't heard anything about Jay yet," Lloyd explained.
"Dr. Julien? You actually found him?"
"Yes."
"And he's still alive?"
"Let me guess. He died in your world?"
"Twice."
"Twice? How do you die twice?" Koko asked.
"An evil skeleton lord brought him back to life."
"Evil skeleton lord… Are you talking about my dad?" Lloyd asked.
"No, though the skulkin did work with him briefly."
Lloyd didn't know what to think as he entered the hospital room. Jay was in his bed, pouting, and Kai was giggling uncontrollably. Cole and Nya were sitting between the two beds.
"What's so funny?" Lloyd asked.
"Apparently morphine makes him laugh. Hey, Giggles, shut up," Cole said.
Kai only started laughing harder.
"Jay? What's wrong?"
Jay turned away. Cole motioned for Lloyd to stop talking, but Lloyd ignored the warning.
"Jay?" Lloyd asked.
"I'm never going to walk again," Jay grumbled.
"You don't know that," Cole said.
"Yes, Cole, I do know that. My life is over. I can't walk, she wants a divorce, and we're never getting back home."
"Divorce?" Lloyd looked at Nya.
"I don't know him," Nya said.
"No one is getting a divorce," Cole said over Kai's laughter.
"But I don't know him."
"You aren't allowed to file for a divorce until we're back home and Mystaké has had a chance to work her magic on you."
"Do you really trust Mystaké?" Jay asked.
"No, but I think she knows how to get us home."
