CHAPTER 26 - CONFRONTATION
The rays of mid day sun was what finally woke up Light from his sleep. Not that he realized how late it was at first. He woke up a few times during the morning, only to fall asleep again within seconds. When he finally opened his eyes and saw that he was in his room, in his bed, it didn't come to him immediately. He yawned and blinked a few times before his brain started working. Then… it all came back to him and his eyes went wide.
Last night. The tourney. The vision. Lawliet.
Light shot up to sitting position and his breathing quickened.
"Oh shit…" he cursed and looked around to make sure the professor wasn't there with him. Luckily, the room was empty. But he noticed he had his shoes off.
"What? But… how did I get here?" Light asked and then noticed a food tray that was floating at the other side of the bed. He frowned and moved to take the note from the tray:
"Light, you passed out after your vision.
I brought you to your room.
Take it easy today and rest.
You've been through a lot last night.
L Lawliet"
When Light read the note he felt butterflies in his belly. He couldn't help but feel happy that his professor took care of him like this. But then Light suddenly remembered how much his professor took care of him last night and his face turned bright red. He remembered how he begged his professor to meet with him late at night, how he was doing puppy dog eyes at him and how he later on cried on his shou…
"Oh crap… oh shit!" Light let out and immediately headed to his private bathroom to put his head under ice cold water. He let a cold flow fall on him for a minute and then he straightened up and looked in the mirror. His face was red and his chest was wildly raising and falling.
"I hugged him?! And he… he hugged me back?!" Light asked his reflection in the mirror. But the reflection only swallowed hard realizing, that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was that he practically sat in Lawliet's lap, crying, trying to nuzzle on his neck and the man he… Light's eyes went wide again and his face went even redder when he remembered Lawliet's soothing touches on his back and in his hair. And his sweet words:
"It's okay, darling… nothing is going to happen to you. I am here. I'll keep you safe."
"I am with you, baby, no one will hurt you…"
Light leaned against the wash-basin because his knees almost gave up under him. He suddenly felt strange. His legs were trembling and his belly was fluttering. He felt embarrassed about everything he let happen last night but also… he felt happy that it happened?
This really shouldn't have happened… what was I thinking? Light thought and reminded himself that he intended to bury his sympathies towards Lawliet inside but instead he ended up encouraging them.
Light turned around and went back to his room, to his bed. He didn't have energy for anything and he wanted to bury himself under the blanket and never leave his room again. How he was going to face the man again he didn't know. He reached out to cover himself with a blanket again but he stopped his movements and stared at the breakfast tray which was still floating next to his bed.
He really did this for me? Light asked and his eyes fell on the single red rose in a vase on the tray. He reached out and took it to his hands and sniffed. It smelled heavenly. Light couldn't help but smile happily and run the bloom over his cheeks.
Could he…? Perhaps he has…? Light's carefully hidden romantic nature was getting on the surface but he decided to fight it:
"No… that's ridiculous… I am sure he just saw me as an omega in trouble and wanted to sooth me… there is nothing more to it." He said with a rational voice and the only answer he got was only silence in his room. He looked at the rose again and pursed his lips. There was a seed of doubt within him.
But would he do this for someone else? Would he call anyone else darling, in that situation?
Something in Light wanted to believe it wasn't the case. He wanted to believe that he was the only one Lawliet was so attentive to. That he would not conjure breakfast with a rose for anyone else but him. That he would not call darling and baby anyone else, but him. That there was no one else the man would take in his lap. Light simply wanted to believe that Lawliet felt something for him…
"No… that's not true…" he started arguing with himself again: "... and even if it were, I already told myself I don't want to fall in love with him… No… it would just bring problems."
But the truth was… and Light was very aware that, if Lawliet would ever show any feelings of a romantic nature towards him, he would immediately open his heart and let himself fall. Because only if they both fall they might have had a future. They could get to know each other. Get familiar with their humor and habits. They would learn how to read each other's scents. They would date and kiss and make love. They might even get married, mate and have children and…
Light stopped his train of thoughts because he suddenly recalled his vision. His stomach made a somersault and he let go of the rose. Until now, he was so lost in analyzing his situation with Lawliet, that he almost forgot about the most important thing that happened that night.
"What the hell was that?" he asked out loud when he recalled various details of what his inner omega showed him. It was supposed to help him to find what he really wanted inside help him to unleash his magical power but… that vision was… strange.
When they started it, two weeks ago, Light was sure it was all just about him finding a mate, being intimate with someone and having a family. He also found out that he doesn't like being pushed into things. It all made hell a lot of sense, given his situation. But now that he saw the rest of the vision, he wasn't sure about anything. It was full of contrasts and everything he saw made him damn uncomfortable.
Well… not everything.
He must have admitted to himself that from the moment he accepted he was having some feelings for Lawliet, the thought of them being a pair and having children wasn't so bad. But the other part of his vision scared the hell out of him. Him being a bad guy who would take Lawliet's life. Anyone's life.… that made him want to throw up.
Light shivered and drew a blanket closer to his body. He didn't understand at all why his inner omega showed him something like that. He was sure it didn't have anything to do with Mikami and Lawliet. His subconsciousness just took them and used them as examples. Simply because they were close to him.
But why would Mikami be evil? Light questioned his own subconsciousness and it didn't make sense to him. But it could have something to do with the forced kiss. Light was not sure. But it wasn't important. It wasn't what was making him tremble. What was leaving him in the restless state of mind was the fact that there was probably evil, hidden deep inside him.
L spent the entire night searching through his old case files hoping to find that hand writing. He was sure he saw it before and it must have been in old evidence. He was hundred percent sure he saw that hand writing at work. So he illegally transferred his old case files from the Ministry and started going through the papers. But the number of evidence files he got through over the past seven years was so high, it was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
L stood in the middle of his tower cabinet, the note he found last night was floating in the air in front of him and everywhere around evidence files were floating, making slow movements in front of him and then then folded in a stack.
L was examining paper by paper, trying to find a conformity. But even after more than ten hours of searching, he didn't find anything. He started wondering if he was searching in the right place. He knew that handwriting. He saw it before. But maybe it wasn't case related after all. It might have been written by someone from the office. Or the ministry. But that would make things complicated because he didn't have access to employees' private files. And he was unable to transfer them. He could only transfer things he saw before. And even like that, he was breaking at least 100 security protocols. Not that he cared at that moment.
L frowned and put a finger to his lower lip while thinking:
This isn't good… if I have no idea who is waiting for me there I could be as well walking into a trap.
But on the other hand, L was waiting over 2 months now for something to happen. This wasn't what he expected but it was at least something.
Light didn't leave his room for another two hours. He forced himself to eat a bit of a breakfast Lawliet prepared for him, but it felt like a stone in his stomach. That was the effect of him still seeing Lawliet's dead eyes. He knew it was just a vision. It wasn't real. But it felt like it. In the end, the only reason he left his bed was to seek out his professor and make sure he was alive.
When he was slowly walking the corridors of Hogwarts, he tried to prepare what he wanted to say. He knew he didn't want to talk about the vision. Not yet. But he felt like he needed to apologize for his emotional outburst and he was sure Lawliet would want to draw some lines in their relationship. Which was fine.
He totally has a right to do that… Light rationalized, but he really wasn't happy about it. His inner omega definitely wanted to sit in that lap again and he himself… he tried not to think about it.
He continued his walk, with intention to head straight to DADA classroom, but stopped in his tracks when two girls passed him while giving him strange looks.
"See that's him! He is sleeping with Lawliet…" he heard a girl saying and his heart almost stopped in his chest. He quickly turned after those two girls and gaped. He couldn't believe what he just heard.
No… No… I misheard. Light told himself and continued walking. I am just tired and hearing things.
But in the next corridor, he met a few more schoolmates and they were all looking at him with stern and disgusted looks. He swallowed hard and quickened his pace. He immediately thought that someone might have seen him with Lawliet at night. Maybe when Lawliet took him back to his room. Because he really had no idea how that happened.
No… but that's not possible. There is practically no one in my part of the tower. Light tried to reason with himself, but the more people he was passing in the corridors, the more strange looks and whispers were around him. He decided he should head to the message board, as most of the people were coming from that direction, but he stopped in his tracks as he turned the next corner. He was in the entrance hall and together with him, at least half of the school. They were all gazing at the hourglasses and thronging around the point books. Most people were around the Ravenclaws' book. But not only Ravenclaws. Kids from all houses. They were sighing and screaming one over another:
"But that's the highest personal score in the history of Hogwarts…" Light heard some kid yell.
Then he finally noticed the Ravenclaw's hourglasses and he gaped. It was almost full. Almost every single blue gem from the upper bulb, was now in the lower one.
"Look! He is here!" Someone yelled. "It's Light Yagami!"
Dead silence spreaded across the hall as everyone looked at Light. All the angry sights sent a wave of discomfort to Light's gut. He had no idea what was going on. But he tried to compose himself and not to look scared. He had no idea what to do next. He didn't even dare to move. After a moment of uncomfortable silence, someone at the back of the room asked: "How did you do that?"
Everyone's head turned to the questioner and back him again. Light quickly realized that there was no way he could pretend he knows what they are on about. He decided to ask, as calmly as he could: "How did I do what?"
There were a few disgusted sounds around the room and Light also noticed Takada and Mikami at the other side of the room. But they were not really helping. They were just watching the situation.
"Get out of my way!" A high squeaky voice echoed through the hall and Light watched as people were literally pushed away by a small blonde, who was making her way to him. He was not sure if he was nervous or relieved by that.
"Light…" she said his name the moment she finally stood in front of him. Everyone was watching them with hawk's eyes.
"Misa… hi… what's… what's going on?" He asked and cursed himself for stuttering.
Misa pursed her lips nervously: "Well, it seems like Lawliet finally let out his points last night."
Light raised an eyebrow and eyes the hourglasses again. All of them were certainly fullest than a few days ago. Especially Ravenclaw's.
But that doesn't explain why everyone is so…
"Come, better if you'll see it for yourself…" Misa said, took his arm and dragged him towards Ravenclaw's hourglass and point book. The students were stepping aside and making space for them to pass. But they were giving Light angry and disapproving looks. For some reason, Misa leaned closer to him and whispered:
"Don't worry, Light. I know it's not like that..."
It's not like that? What the hell is she talking about? Light was asking himself but every step they took forward the image of what was going on was getting clearer in his mind. There could be only one reason why everyone was so agitated. One reason he heard girls whispering he was sleeping with Lawliet. The last person stepped aside and Light finally had a chance to look into the point book. His eyes widen in horror when he saw the last entries:
Yagami Light, 250 points, class assignments
Yagami Light, 50 points, winner of the tourney
Yagami Light, 20 points, effort
And right after the last entry was written in large red capitals:
YAGAMI LIGHT IS LAWLIET'S SLUT
Light clenched his fits and his blood was instantly boiling. He didn't even have time to think what to do next, when he heard someone saying:
"Well, well, Yagami, you must be extraordinary in bed if Lawliet evaluated you with 320 points."
Light immediately turned around and wanted to punch the person, but before he could identify who it was, there was another yell:
"Can't keep your legs shut, omega?"
And another followed:
"Slut!"
"Bitch!"
"Whore!"
In a second they were shouting one over the other and Light was too overwhelmed to do anything. His reasoning completely shut down and he could only feel the anger raising in his veins. He heard Misa shouting at them. He knew she was on his side, augmenting reasonably. But it didn't matter. Nothing mattered at that point. Over three years of his hard work, of him proving himself... was gone. It was all in vain. Because he was an omega. And there was no other way an omega could deserve points than sleeping around, was there? He was just a lower being controlled by his lust and need for breeding children. Nothing else mattered. Because that was all they saw.
A weak. Ridiculous. Omega.
Light's mind went blank. There was nothing but anger. Pulsing feeling that consumed him completely and then…
A loud crackling sound echoed the hall as all four hourglasses suddenly bursted from the inside and shattered. Then screams as the students tried to shield themselves from the falling glass and colorful gems.
It all happened within a second and Misa watched as students started running away from the place with loud yelles. Some of them had bruises from the shattered glass and some of them seemed just shocked. Misa stood in front of Light and was partly shielded by his body. She quickly looked at him, to make sure he wasn't badly injured but Light only stood there. Completely frozen. His eyes fixed on somewhere far away and he didn't seem to perceive any of the chaos around. He was also completely untouched by the shattered glass. Misa opened and closed her mouth. He looked so distant and yet angry. All other students from the hall were already gone. Mikami remained unmoving and observed Light and Misa.
"Light?" she whispered and tugged her friend's sleeve.
It took a moment for Light to understand what happened. And it was only for his previous talks with Lawliet that he realized that it was him. He broke the hourglasses. He injured other students. And it scared him to the core.
There is really a darkness in me… he thought and felt tears coming to his eyes. In that moment he felt a tug on his sleeve and looked down at Misa. She looked confused and frightened. He looked around to see everyone already gone. Just Mikami was there coming closer.
"Light, are you alright?" Mikami asked with a frown.
Light didn't know what to answer. He was not alright. Hell he was not alright. But he couldn't tell them that… He needed to… he needed to save the rest of the dignity he had left.
He narrowed and nodded: "I am fine."
"What… what just happened?" Misa asked and looked at Light. He opened his mouth to say something but Mikami was faster:
"I think the hourglasses didn't last under the pressure from all the gems in the lower bulbs and exploded."
Light was shocked by his statement. Surely Mikami knew it was him. He must have known. But this lie created a cover for him and Light decided to go with it. His face remained unchanged, he only nodded.
Misa was silent for a second, before accepting the explanation: "That's strange… I hope everyone is alright."
"Mmm… I also do. Maybe you should go to the infirmary, check on the situation, Amane." Mikami said formally.
Light knew what he was doing. He wanted to win some time alone with Light. But Light wasn't ready. He wasn't ready to face Mikami for multiple reasons and he definitely didn't want to have a conversation about what just happened.
"That's a good idea. And if you'll excuse me, I'll go to find professor Lawliet. I think I need an explanation from him." Light said and quickly headed towards the exit.
"Do you want me to go with you?" Mikami called after him.
"No, thank you. I can beat the shit out of that bastard myself." Light said and meant it. He heard Misa protesting behind him and he knew what she was thinking. That Lawliet surely did have a good reason to give him such a ridiculous amount of points. That he surely deserved them. But he didn't see it that way. He was sure Lawliet had ulterior motives. And just thinking about the possible scenarios made Light's blood boiling again.
It's all his fault! My life was perfectly fine before he stepped into Hogwarts! Him and his bloody methods! I can't believe I was so naive and started trusting him. Damn him! He did it all on purpose, didn't he?! He wanted to gain my trust and then humiliate me! I hate him! I fucking hate him!
With these thoughts, Light headed straight into DADA classroom. There was no reasoning anymore. Just raw emotions and disappointment. In both himself and Lawliet.
L was deep in his thoughts, completely oblivious to events outside of his cabinet when the door suddenly burst open.
"Are you fucking kidding me?!" A very angry young male's voice echoed in the room.
L didn't even have to turn around to know it's Light Yagami, having a tantrum. L was not sure if he was pointing to the events of last night or to the points he got. But he didn't really care at the moment. He had a lot of work to do and only a little time left. The boy had to wait.
"Light, please leave. We will talk another time. I don't have time." L said, as calmly as he could, but he didn't even turn around to look at Light. He was still examining his evidence, file by file floating in front of his eyes and away. His wand was making all the necessary magic at the moment, so it couldn't focus on Light.
But Light was not the one to give up easily. In his mind he already blamed everything on Lawliet and he needed answers to confirm his theories. He definitely wasn't leaving this room without answers. He didn't really care that the whole room was a mess of floating papers and that Lawliet's scent was showing a serious lack of interest.
"We. Will. Talk. NOW!" Light hissed and it caused L's wand to stop working and turn towards the fuming boy. The wand was obviously about to do something, but L stopped it:
"No, leave him be, we don't have time for this." L commanded and the wand turned to papers again. That pissed Light even more. Lawliet was talking to the wand but he was completely ignoring him.
"STOP IGNORING ME!" He yelled at his professor.
The sound of that angry yelling voice caused hair on the back of L's neck to stand up. He finally snapped out of his working trance. He hated when someone was yelling at him. It reminded him of one particular part of his childhood that he wanted to forget about.
L slowly turned around to face Light.
Light's breath froze in his lungs when he saw those big piercing eyes filling with ice cold anger. The air around him quickly filled with a dangerously smelling scent. It smelled like something was burning. Light knew he got his warning before but it was too late. He crossed the line and he wasn't going to back off.
"Why the hell did you give me 320 points?!" Light said, totally pissed off and made a step closer.
L tilted his head. He hated this. The boy was seriously out of line and L couldn't do anything to calm him down. Or more precisely, he didn't want to. He was too tired to deal with Light's tantrums and there was a line to everything. And no matter how much he liked the boy, he was still his teacher. Light couldn't just come into his cabinet without invitation and yell at him. He couldn't just come and disturb him, while he was working. L needed to find the handwriting and prepare for the meeting with that mysterious person. He could deal with Yagami later.
"Because you earned them, now leave. I don't have time for you." L said and turned back to his work. But Light was not moving and he was still holding his speech:
"320 points?! Are you kidding me?! That's what a house usually gets for a year! Do you seriously hate me so much that you must have humiliated me like this?!"
L felt like someone kicked a breath out of his lungs and abruptly turned to look at the boy's face. He was serious. He just said a complete utter shit and he was deadly serious. And pissed off. L felt the whole room starting to shake, books were falling from shelves as Light was glaring daggers at him. Case files suddenly fell to the ground as L's wand stopped holding them in the air and flew fastly against Light.
L quickly caught it in the air, before something could happen. He meant to snap at Light, but he couldn't mask the disappointment in his voice and he only growled:
"Get. Out."
Light could smell the scent around him turning again, attacking his nostrils and forcing him to submit. His inner omega was yelling in pain and begged Light to crawl on the floor in front of the alpha. He felt sweat on his forehead and he clenched his fists.
"I am not leaving until you give me an explanation!" Light answered with fire in his eyes, while his whole being was shaking.
"I said… GET OUT!" L yelled and waved his wand in the air.
Before Light knew it he was flying out the cabinet, out of DADA classroom and down the stairs from the tower.
Awww… and they were bonding so well until now. :/ What an evil author… :D :D :D
