A/N: Blah blah blah, boring intro stuff. Enjoy the story update.
OOOOOOOOOOOOO
Sadie climbed out of Sam's truck and took a deep breath. The pain in her body was easing. She'd stopped coughing up blood when they'd crossed the imaginary border between the two peoples. She could sit up on her own by the time they were five minutes in. Her body was healing.
Because I came back, Sadie thought, feeling a tinge of fear curl in her stomach as she looked at the Cullen's house of glass. I'm surprised that the big idiot hasn't come crashing through some window to get to me. Is he really that bad off?
Sadie shouldered her bag and turned, seeing Carlisle and Esme coming out onto the lawn. The wolf girl offered Esme a small smile and the matriarch of the Cullen family was suddenly hugging her tightly, sniffling a little. Sadie wrapped her arms around her adopted mother, remembering the feeling of being held and feeling like she was almost home.
"Esme, I'm – I'm sor-" Sadie began when Esme pulled back, but the woman hushed her.
"It's okay. You're home now," Esme told her with a warm smile. Her amber eyes turned towards Sam and his wife. "Thank you for taking care of her for as long as you did. We'll keep her safe from here on in."
"Remember, Young Wolf," Sam said, looking at Sadie as Carlisle stepped up to her. "You can come across the border to learn how to be a wolf. It is unwise to stay there however." His eyes burned with ancient secrets. "Your place is among these people and beside the giant one."
Sadie nodded and brushed back a strand of hair. "I know. Thank you, Sam."
Sam turned, gathered his wife and got back in his truck. Sadie watched them drive away and then turned to face the big house once more. Her eyes searched the windows.
"How bad is he?" she asked, trembling.
"Not in the best condition, I'm afraid." Carlisle told her. "It would do him well to eat something large."
"On it," Sadie said, heading towards the house.
She walked into the house and was immediately bathed in the sweet scents of the vampires that lived there. It made her light headed for a moment after living with musky, earthy wolves for as long as she had. Shaking her head to clear it, she headed for the stairs.
Alice and Jasper were watching her from the entrance to their room when she made it to the top. She glanced at them and Alice pointed towards the closed bedroom door that had once been Sadie's.
Is it still mine? Has anyone lain claim to it since I left? She scented the air and rolled her eyes. Of course she would try. Stingy bitch with all her perfect little reasons why she needs a second bedroom. If I had permission, I'd tear into her…
The dark haired girl put her hand on the door knob and twisted it. She pushed open the door and stepped inside, looking towards the bed where a curled up giant lay. She dropped her bag and watched him twitch, but he said nothing and didn't move beyond that. With a heavy sigh, Sadie crossed her arms and looked at him hard.
"Well, aren't you a sorry pile of pathetic."
OOOOOOOOOOOO
Emmett had heard voices outside the house. He hadn't understood them. All he understood was the pain in his belly from lack of food and the pain of knowing that Sadie was dying across the border. The rest could go to Hell.
She has to come back…please let her come back…I can protect her…I can love her…
The door to the bedroom opened and closed. It had to be Rosalie again. She was always coming now to tease him – sometimes smelling of a fresh kill that made his stomach turn. He'd come so close to pinning her to the wall and biting her. But he didn't want to touch her. He'd never touch her again.
His throat burned so he couldn't tell her to go away. He just laid there. Defeated.
"Well, aren't you a sorry pile of pathetic," someone said and he vaguely registered that it wasn't Rosalie's voice.
There's no way.
"I go away for a little while and you decide to pull a hunger strike like some kind of fucking idiot who got his favorite toy taken away," the voice continued, sounding closer and closer. "You're a complete idiot, Emmett. Did you stop and think for a moment what would have happened to me if you'd done something because you needed the blood and it turned into a disaster ending in your death? I would have died too. On that side."
Emmett opened his eyes slowly. "Sadie?"
"No, I'm Mary Poppins."
The large vampire pushed himself upright and looked at the person standing in the room with him, unbelieving. His undead heart tried to beat and he felt all his emotions and his thoughts swirl through his body. Sadie was standing there at the foot of the bed, looking paler than normal, but alive.
"Sadie…" He wet his lips with his tongue. "Sadie, you came back."
"Yeah, because someone was being an idiot and not doing vampire necessities," Sadie told him, bracing her hands on the bed. "I wonder who that would be."
Emmett climbed towards her and swung his legs over the foot of the bed, looking up at her as she straightened. "You left…"
"I know," Sadie said, looking into his eyes. "And you look like shit."
How red are they? How much hunger is there?
The vampire lifted a hand and struck out with it, catching Sadie by the wrist. She didn't resist him as he pulled her close, resting his face against her body. He breathed in her scent deeply, greedily. His arms wrapped around her tightly and he held onto her like she would fade away at any moment.
"You came back," he whispered, voice muffled against her.
"Yes," Sadie said, running her fingers through his hair. "And I don't plan on going anywhere for a very long time, okay?"
Emmett peeked up at her, nose resting at the base of her breasts. "You're not running away again." He squeezed her. "Mine."
Sadie's lips twitched at the corner. "Not yet, I'm not." She bumped him with her hips. "Now c'mon. Let go and go to the mountains to eat something. You really do look like shit."
Emmett let out a little growl which caused Sadie to roll her eyes. Couldn't she understand that if he let her go, she would disappear again? Because this had to be a dream. She couldn't be really there. He would have heard her coming miles away.
Sadie cupped his face between her hands and smoothed her thumbs over his cheekbones. "Emmett…hon, if you don't go eat something right now, I'm going to have to drag your sorry ass into someone's trunk and drive you there myself," she threatened. "And if you haven't realized something, I don't drive because I suck at it. I'm a danger on the road and I will hurt someone if I take you that way. So do us both a favor – do humanity a favor – and get your ass moving towards where the bears are in the mountains."
"But -" Emmett began.
"I'll still be here," Sadie promised, offering him a small smile. "I've got to reclaim this room because it smells so much like you and…" She shook her head and pressed a kiss to his forehead. "Just go take care of yourself."
Emmett closed his eyes at her touch and drank it in. He didn't want to move, but his stomach was empty. He needed blood and not hers. Not a human's. Being in the same room as her was torture because he wanted to bite her, to make love to her, to devour her all at the same time. And yet, he resisted.
"Go," Sadie whispered.
"I'll be back," Emmett promised, tilting his face up and grazing his lips against hers, just a taste. "I'll come back in no time…then I'll hold you some more."
Sadie smiled against his lips. "Hurry then. Get going. Take Jasper with you to make sure you don't accidentally eat the wrong thing."
Emmett looked up at her and she moved back, out of his grasp. He rose to his feet and walked towards the door, seeing Jasper already at the landing for the stairs. The large vampire turned and looked at Sadie once more.
"Don't go anywhere," he begged.
The wolf girl sat on the foot of the bed and crossed her legs. "I won't. I promise."
Emmett believed her and turned, leaving.
OOOOOOOOOOOO
Sadie let her breath out in a heavy sigh when she heard Jasper's car leave the premises, taking Emmett with him. A single tear fell down her cheek and she sniffled, not wanting to believe what she had just seen.
How could that have happened? He looked so…so…hungry and dangerous…yet, sad. Like he was giving up because of me…how could I have done that to him?
"Welcome back to the land of the living," Alice's voice came from the doorway. "I hear you had quite the adventure."
Sadie's hazel eyes turned to the spunky vampire. "Alice! Oh my God, Alice, I missed you!"
Alice leaned against the doorframe. "You could have called then. You could have come home. We missed you and seeing you walk around school, then go missing because you fell apart, that was hell, Sadie. As bad as I heard you were, I wanted to go across the border and bring you back. I had to talk sense into Jasper because he almost did it a couple nights ago."
Sadie looked down at her feet. "I'm sorry, Alice. I know I've caused a lot of problems since coming to Forks, but I'm going to make up for it. I don't know how, but I'll do my best. And look, I came home and convinced Emmett to hunt? That's good, right?"
Alice was silent. Too silent.
Next thing Sadie knew, she was being squished tightly by the spunky brunette and could barely breathe. Alice smiled at her.
"I'm glad to have you back, Sadie," she decided. "Rosalie has just been terrible since you left. And as penance, you can let me dress you for the next three months. Okay? Okay."
Sadie offered a weak smile. Lord, help me.
