Pokemon Story: A Normal Journey – Contest Extraordinaire Arc

~Ash Ketchum has completed the trials in Akala Island. Now he has to confront the Kahuna of the island for his Grand Trial. Before that, he meets up with an old friend and participates in a coordinator event that will help him grow as a trainer! How will it turn out? Will Ash win?~

~Preliminaries 26~

May stood on stage, looking at the crowd once again with a big smile "Welcome back everyone! After an eventful day with great performances, we have the 8 coordinators who will participate in the battle rounds!"

Behind her, stood the 32 aspiring coordinators waiting for the verdict.

"We've seen some great performances and we want to see many more! Remember residents of Alola, that in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh there are several contests and tournaments! We wait for you!"

The crowd claps at the announcement, many looking interested in actually partaking in the action.

"Now we'll announce the ones who pass to the next round! They are… Mina!"

Mina steps up with the duo of Rimbombee and bows to the crowd.

"Tristan!"

A young boy of 10 years of age at most steps up along a Magmortar and a Electivire that towered over him by at least twice his size. The boy waves wildly at the crowd, some of them chanting his name.

"Mallow!"

"Kya!" Mallow steps up with her Tsareena and her Lilligant, squealing in joy. She quickly recomposes herself and bows to the crowd, a radiant smile on her face.

"Hugh!"

Hugh crosses his arms and smirks as he steps up with his Audino and a Bannete at his side.

"Burnet!"

Burnet steps up with her Munchlax and her Munna, quickly stealing the mic from May "Did you see that Kukui!? I'm in! You so owe me those vacations!"

Kukui had to sigh at this, tuning out the TV for the moment "That Burnet…"

"She certainly is a very free spirited woman"

Kukui smiles at that "Too true my friend" he turns to his blonde companion and serves him a cup of sake "Want some more, Molayne?"

"You don't even give me the choice, Kukui" Molayne smiles wistfully "It was always you calling the shots with the two of us… well even when we were three"

Kukui's good mood goes down the drain with those words "That Guzma… he's going around the islands again…"

"He's still with that Team Skull thing?" Molayne looks at the TV and sees both Lana and Kiawe waving at the crowd at their respective turns.

"He hasn't changed one bit in that regard…" Kukui comments as he sees May present the last coordinator "May be even worse…"

"The last coordinator to pass to the battle stage is none other than Ash Ketchum!"

Ash steps forward along his Pikachu and Eevee.

"That is one trainer to be wary of" Kukui chuckles, seeing Pikachu and Eevee wrestling on Ash's shoulders.

"You think he's that good?"

"He'll be by your doorstep soon enough" Kukui leans forward in thought "I haven't seen him battle all out, but he did beat Professor Oak's signature Exeguttor easily"

"And Olivia?"

Kukui shakes his head and sighs "It really depends on her honestly. Is she willing to go all out on a Grand Trial?"

"Ash, this is Mina. She's a Trial Captain just like us" Lana introduces the blonde-haired girl from before "She's from Poni Island, the last island you'll visit"

Ash smiles at Mina and extends his hand to shake hands with her "I'm Ash, glad to meet you!"

Mina looks down at his hand with a bored expression, before shaking hands with him "Hello"

Mallow steps in between and turns towards Mina "That's cold, Mina! You can do better than that!" She starts shaking the girl by her shoulders "Be a little warmer!"

Ash steps back, a sweat drop falling by his face "I kind of get this happens all the time"

"Mina is not really that sociable, she's more interested in her art" Lana fills the blanks with her tidbit of information "Still she's a good friend when it counts"

Mallow pulls Mina's cheeks, the latter not really reacting at the assault.

The group were in the forest surrounding Royal Avenue, intent on having a quite time while training with their Pokemon. The Pokemon were roaming around the clearing happily playing with each other. Lana had the idea to introduce Mina to Ash, which led to their current situation.

"So, have they put up the brackets?" Kiawe walks up to them, intent on battling. He was fired up after learning that all his friends made it to the next round.

"In a few minutes they will"

The group turns to look at May, who walked up to them dressed in normal clothes for once. At least to Ash it was her normal outfit. Black shorts, a red top and a bow headband that completed her look.

"Hey everyone!" She walks up to them and starts shaking hands with them "Ash told me about you all, and your performances were great!"

Mallow stood rigid in spot, shaking May's hands mechanically while Kiawe looked astonishingly composed "You're May Maple, the trainer of that impressive Blaziken"

May turns to look at Kiawe and steps back at the intense look in the man's eyes "Er… yes?"

"I want to battle your Blaziken" Kiawe bows to her in the ground "Please!"

"Don't bother her so early, Kiawe!" Lana steps on Kiawe's head and the two start glaring at each other again.

"You want to battle!?" Fire blazes behind Kiawe as a stormy ocean is summoned behind Lana "Is that a small joke?"

"If it fits you…"

And soon they were at it again…

"They don't really learn how to mesh with people" Mina sighs in thought "Will they ever learn?"

Ash and Mallow turns to Mina, deadpan in their faces "Really?"

"They won't have to wait too long to settle their battle" May waves her Rotom Smartphone at them "The matches have been announced!"

The group gathers around May to see the brackets.

"Kiawe Vs Lana!?" Mallow steps back in shock "Who set that one up!?"

"Oho! I'm against Mina!" Ash looks at the phone and then at Mina "We're the third battle!"

"Mallow you're against Professor Burnet" Mina looks at the screen and sighs "I wanted to battle you"

"You should be able to, if you beat Ash that is" May smirks at her, but sweat drops as she gets no response "I remembered that I don't really know you… I'm May…"

"I'm Mina"

Silence reigned after that declaration, leaving everyone sans Mina waiting for something to happen.

Ash decides to break the tension with the final matchup "The winner between Kiawe and Lana will be battling against that kid Tristan or Hugh"

"That will be a tough one" Mallow frowns at the screen "Ash told me about that Hugh guy. He's really strong…"

Ash's eyes are fixed on Hugh's face in the screen "That time…"

Seeing the reasoning behind this, he calmed down, but still spoke confrontational "Pikachu has defeated Mega Evolved Pokemon in the past, there is no reason for you to not accept"

"Can you honestly tell me that your Pikachu can stand against my Medicham after witnessing it battle? The Medicham who's my weakest Pokemon on hand?" Hugh's eyes bore on Ash's and he felt weak suddenly "Clearly not. I'm not seeking to offend you or your Pokemon, but Mega Evolved Pokemon, well trained ones, cannot be defeated by normal ones"

Ash frowns at that. The time Pikachu won against Mega Lucario… well it was a recently mega evolved one…

"It's a simple fact" Hugh continues "I will not battle you unless you prove to me you can, but you…"

"I know for a fact that I couldn't have beaten him back then… he had this aura around him… like the one the Champions have" Ash looks to the sky deep in thought "Even now I feel… unsure… I don't know why this guy scares me so much"

"This guy scares you, Ash?" May looks at her friend in concern. Never in her journeys has she seen Ash so doubtful about a battle.

He always charged forwards and trusted in his partners. It was a simple fact. What could have happened to shake Ash like that?

May decided to speak with him about that before the event ended.

"Let's go then" Mina looks at all of them, a bored look on her face "The battles will start soon"

The other nod at that and follow her.

"Charizard use Flamethrower!"

"Hydro Pump, Milotic!"

An aged Charizard shots a highly concentrated stream of flames that clashes with a beautiful Milotic's water stream.

Lana smiles seeing the Hydro Pump winning over the Flamethrower and pushes forward "Dragon Dance!"

Milotic gets covered in energy as it gives a twirl in the air "Tic!"

"Look how beautiful Milotic looks!" Nurse Joy praises the coordinator's decision.

May nods in agreement "That will cost Kiawe some points"

Kiawe grits his teeth seeing his health bar going down "Rush at Milotic with Dragon Rush!"

Draconic energy covers Charizard as it flies towards Milotic, who just finished the dance.

"Counter Dragon Tail!"

Milotic quickly spins around and slams her tail against Charizard's oncoming assault.

"Now to make it beautiful!" Kiawe's fires burn brightly as he shouts "Beat your wings and use Heat Wave!"

While clashing Dragon Rush and Dragon Tail, Charizard starts beating its wings, picking up a hot wind that meshed with its move. Red and blue combines into purple as Milotic is pushed back until it rolls towards Lana.

"Milotic!" Lana looks concerned as the crowd cheers at the display.

"What an amazing way to bring a light show to that powerful clash! Despite clearly being a trainer, Kiawe has some imagination for this kind of battles" Mr. Contesta looks appraisingly at Kiawe's work.

Milotic gets up unsteadily as Charizard starts looking intensely at the rival Pokémon.

Lana's eyes widen at that "Could it be…?"

Kiawe frowns at this "What is it, Charizard?!" Charizard turns to look at Kiawe and its trainer turns pale at what he saw "N-No way!"

Charizard had hearts for eyes…

"Milotic's ability, Cute Charm, seems to have activated in their last clash" May theorizes as she sweat drops 'Feels like seeing Brock all over again…'

"Charizard snap out of it!" Kiawe suddenly looks panicked at this turn of events "Come on buddy!"

"Kuh, kuh, kuh" A shadow covers Lana's eyes as a mocking smirk bloom on her face "Did you really think you could win this battle, Kiawe?"

Kiawe takes a step back, feeling the dread over his head "T-This power…"

-o-

Ash looks at the battle with critical eye "Lana took over"

"I agree, she clearly was looking forward to her Pokémon using her ability" Wallace comments from his seat "Kiawe's Charizard is still the stronger Pokemon"

"But strength is not everything in a contest battle" Juan comments with a nod "I agree woefully, Lana has a good mind for this"

"Milotic use Life Dew!"

Milotic used her technique to heal herself "Tic!"

"Come on Charizard! Use Flamethrower!"

Charizard nods and shots a stream of fire upwards, forming a heart with it.

"That certainly is beautiful" Nurse Joy sweat drops a bit "But it doesn't help Kiawe's situation"

"Milotic finish this battle with Hydro Pump!" Lana points at Charizard, intent on ending the battle.

"Milo! Tic!" Milotic shoots the stream of water at the Flame Pokemon.

"Char!" Charizard is taken from his lovestruck funk as water showers over him "Char-char!"

"Charizard react now!" Kiawe pleads with his Pokemon, only for Charizard to start glowing red "Can it be…?"

"That's Blaze" May looks at Kiawe intently "And a strong one at that…"

Charizard turns around to see Kiawe in the eyes, a glare set on the look of the Pokemon "Char…"

Kiawe smiles at this "You're right my friend!" It seems that Charizard snapped out of the infatuation after a cold shower… "We'll end this with a Z-Move!"

Lana frowns at this, but nods nonetheless "Let's clash then!"

Both coordinators cross their arms, initiating the poses for their respective Z-Moves.

"Wela Volcano burns for you, Charizard! Use Inferno Overdrive!"

A great ball of fire coalesces in front of Charizard, ready to be thrown "Char!"

Lana meanwhile moved her arms like the ocean waves "Milotic, swim in tranquillity like a wave! Use Hydro Vortex!"

Milotic generates a water tornado and sends it towards the Inferno Overdrive, both clashing for dominance over the other.

"Fire will never beat water!" Lana shouts at Kiawe, the ocean backing her up.

Fire explodes behind Kiawe and he retorts back "Fire is indomitable! Never to be extinguished!"

"GO!" Both coordinators' shouts to their Pokemon as the Z-Moves collapse and explodes in a big curtain of vapour.

Everyone waits in silence to see the result, only to be surprised to see both Pokemon unconscious.

"What!?"

Mallow sighs at that "Another tie"

"Indeed… their conflict will be eternal, like art" Mina adds her two PoKé.

-o-

The judges debate lightly between themselves until they come to a conclusion.

Raoul Contesta stands up and informs everyone of their decision "Despite both Pokemon being unconscious, there is a clear winner due to the point system used to evaluate the battles. The winner is Lana!"

Lana smiles bitterly at the announcement, looking at Kiawe despondently "This is not a win for me"

"For me neither" Kiawe shakes his head and closes the distance with her "Null battle?"

"Null battle" Lana confirms as they shake hands and leave the stage.

"That… happened…" Ash sweat drops at their reactions to the battle "They keep their record straight…"

"It was an intense battle, still too much charged like a Trainer Battle rather than a Contest Battle" Wallace shakes his head in thought "We'll see how she evolves through this tournament"

An alarm runs off through the private box coming from Lisia's phone.

"Your turn is soon, Ash" Lisia looks at him, a smile on her face "Better get ready!"

Ash gives her a thumb up and leaves the room "See ya!"

"Extrasensory!" Mallow tells her Shiftry "Hold Munchlax in the air!"

"Try!" Shiftry uses the psychic move to hold the Big Eater Pokemon tightly.

"Munchlax use Hyper Beam!" Burnet shouts at her Pokemon "Towards her Shiftry!"

"Turn him around" Mallow smirks confidently.

Shiftry rotates the Pokemon that was preparing the powerful move so that its mouth was pointing directly at Burnet.

Burnet crosses her arms in panic to cancel the move "Munchlax abort now! Don't hit me!"

Munchlax stops the move and burps smoke in the process "Munch…"

"Now finish this with Leaf Storm!"

A tornado of leaves rises up with Munchlax in the epicentre.

"Munch!"

"Oh no Munchlax!" Burnet cries crocodile tears as Munchlax falls to the ground, completely unconscious. That is, until she approaches the Pokemon, cradling it in her arms, and realizes that it was snoring audibly.

"Seeing as Munchlax is out of battle, Mallow and her Shiftry win!"

Mallow giggles sinisterly as she poses with her Shiftry back to back "A piece of cake!"

Ash watched her battle from the backstage, sweat dropping at her punchline "That was brutal…"

"Mallow always did get competitive when she got into it" Mina comments from his side "I wonder who'll get her more… fired up in the next round… you or me?"

Ash shakes his head "Whoever will be, Mallow seems like a different person while battling" Both start walking towards the stage "Another persona or something"

"Or something" Mina shrugs "She just likes to battle and when she's into it…"

"And the next coordinators are Ash and Mina!" May announces to the stadium, a wave of cheers filling the stage.

"Let's have a great battle, Mina!" Ash pumps his fist at her, getting no overall response "Okay then…"

May looks at both of them and takes a seat by the other judges "Release your Pokemon!"

"Come on, Dartrix!" Ash calls for Dartrix, the Pokemon looking at their opponent expectantly.

"Trix…"

"Granbull come out" Mina calls for the Fairy Pokemon, who grumbles slightly as it cracks its knuckles.

"Bull…"

"Start!"

"Fake Tears, Granbull" Mina drones mindlessly, eyes zeroed on Dartrix.

Granbull towers over Dartrix as a lone tear, and only one tear, falls down its immutable face.

Dartrix sweat drops at this, still a veil of energy signifies the fall of its special defense.

The judges looked moved by this…

"What an incredible act" Nurse Joy looked close to tears "I felt Granbull's heavy emotions right there…"

Ash meanwhile was thinking furiously 'Why Fake Tears? Granbull is a hands on Pokemon… so why?' Nevertheless, he had to act "Dartrix use Peck!"

Dartrix flies at Granbull, intent on getting a clean hit.

"Counter with Fire Punch"

Granbull closes his fist as it ignites, fire coming off it.

"Spin around and send some Leafage!"

Dartrix spins as he sends leaves at Granbull, distracting it from the oncoming Peck attack that managed to hit in the Fairy Pokemon's stomach.

"Bull!"

"Trix!" Dartrix flies away, satisfied with the result.

The judges seem to appreciate the combo "That was a crafty combo that showed the versality a Pokemon can have" Raoul Contesta strokes his chin in thought, appreciating the show "Certainly proves that great performances can come from a Trainer"

Mina looked unmoved by this "Shockwave"

Granbull releases several waves of electricity, and finally her tactic clicked on Ash's head...

'Shockwave to keep any Pokemon away and strong physical attacks to counter any close combat… Ash smiles as he sweats a little 'What a fearsome combo!'

Dartrix didn't need the instructions by now to evade as best as he could the electric shocks "Trix! Dartrix!"

"I know Dartrix!" Ash shouts at the Pokemon "Leaf Blade on the ground now!"

Blades of grass comes off Dartrix's foot-claws, as the Pokemon dives to the ground and takes the Shockwave.

Dartrix did remember Ash's battle with Hau.

A cry of pain followed a small curtain of smoke that Ash wanted to take advantage of.

"Ominous Wind now!"

Dartrix sends the smoke directly at Granbull with the Ghost Type move, leaving it blind to the oncoming attack.

"Peck attack!"

"Play Rough" Mina now looked notably more worked up.

Granbull starts chasing after Dartrix, smacking him after he got too close with the Peck move.

"Keep at distance and use Leafage!" Ash looks at the judges and smirks "Cover Granbull with it and give them an impulse with Ominous Wind!"

Dartrix starts lacing the leaves with Ghost energy, turning them purple and making them faster than before.

A shower of purple leaves comes towards Granbull, who couldn't even dodge the move as it had jumped towards Dartrix.

The leaves explode upon contact and throws Granbull towards the ground "Bull!"

The judges see that Granbull was out of it and announce the winner "Coordinator Ash passes to the next round!"

"Good job Dartrix" Ash walks to the Pokemon and hi-fives his wing "That was a cool battle, Mina. I feel that in a trainer battle you would have done better"

Mina walks up to Ash starts measuring him with her thumb in front of her eyes "I see…" And she walks away from the scene, leaving a bewildered Ash behind.

"Eh?"

"And so, the four coordinators going forward are Lana, Hugh, Mallow and Ash!"

-BREAK-

-Ending: Ame wo Matsu - Minami, Ame wo Matsu (2020)-

Hello again people! Welcome to another chapter of ANJ.

Right now, I'm seeing a good vibe of you for this arc, but it certainly can do better. Honestly, this arc for me is a test to see how I would tackle a tournament arc, much like the league. This will help me organize it and be able to show good battles while not overwhelming the reader. Did it feel too rushed? I mean I omitted some obvious results like Hugh Vs Tristan, but I like the idea of showing a bit of every battle. Not every battle because a league is massive. Especially the one I'm planning. SO, this is kind of a test drive. I'd like feedback because I like to write to the intensity of older leagues while covering most of the battles like the Alola League.

What did we see? Well a nice battle between Lana and Kiawe which still leaves their rivalry hanging around. What did you think of their bout?

Mallow destroys Burnet while Ash battles against Mina using some interesting tactics. Also, Dartrix shows who's boss. That's the important bit.

And so, we have the semi-finalists: Ash, Lana, Hugh and Mallow!

How will that go!?

Next time: Lana Vs Hugh and Ash Vs Mallow! Maybe we'll see some of the finals?!

We get to see Ash and May interactions here, but it seems May had a problem here, I hope she will found what path she'll take in the future. Hugh participates ContEx in hopes of battling Lisia is interesting, to say at least. I want to see how things will unfold here. Ash's performance was not bad at all, thanks to influences of May, Dawn, and Serena. Dazzling indeed! Did you see the new preview of Pokémon Journeys by any chance? It's pure HYPE! I hope as well, because I like her too much to be depressed like that :s It's fun because this may be the first time one of Ash's main rivals actively seeks to confront one of his friends. It's cool that Ash takes so much from his friends, he did quite well in the Wallace Cup and in Terracotta Contest. That lead to mean that he could connect through that with his Pokemon. About the preview, *girly screams*. It's awesome. Iris's battle was great. I loved to see her progress off-screen. I mean his friends aren't stagnant and that's how it should be!

InfamousPlayer: I think part of the reason Ash leaves his Pokémon behind when going to a new region is- well, of course it's to nerf him and to make room for the new team without confusing new viewers who didn't watch previous series- but also because there's only so much they can learn from him you know? I mean, think about it, every region he goes to, there's always Gyms to conquer and a league to win. His old mons did exactly that, they don't need to do it AGAIN, so Ash probably thinks they can learn more at Oak's ranch with the old members, who are more experienced and can teach them what Ash can't in a journey that they've already been though. Of course, Alola is an exception to this rule, but still, it would be hard for his old Pokemon to shine without overshadowing his new ones. If they show up in the league it would definitely be cool, would at least stop Ash from losing to a conveniently powerful opponent designed to beat him, I'll tell ya that for free. I loved the contest and Ash's performance, and how you emphasized Ash is actually pretty good. I mean, he did reach the finals in his first one and fought May for that ribbon, so he definitely knows what he's doing, and I loved that he took inspiration from Serena to make his contests better. He taught her and May and Dawn everything he knew, but he also learned from them since what they did was not his are of expertise. That's awesome, it's what makes Ash such an amazing trainer.

Me: Thinking about that, they tried to keep Ash's Pokemon in the Johto arc, where Ash started with a full team that was slowly replaced by his Johto team. It led to a stampede for Ash using Charizard against Falkner, which is not really interesting to see despite the hype fans have due to returning Pokemon. The hype is that, because someone one knows comes back. For example, the hype for Infernape returning. Its not something that happens all the time, and it makes it special. Ash starting from scratch also helps, as you said, to insert new watchers without confusing them. But foremost, to nerf him in order to make the battles challenging. Imagine Ash in Unova's battle with Lenora, which he had to do again if I remember correctly. Using Infernape or even Squirtle would have destroyed the concept of tension. Problem with the ranch is that some Pokemon are quite competitive, so battling with them from time to time is good for them. The upcoming episode with Infernape may regard that issue… But in the end, it's about showing off the development of the new ones. Unfortunately, the conveniently strong trainers are a convenient tool to keep the series going without changing the format and structure of the story. It's in the end about making the series everlasting! About contests, Ash is good. I mean he did reach the finals of a contest and he did well in the Wallace Cup. I believe that contests are a mix of performances and being a trainer, it fits well. Ash's time with Serena broadened his view about the appeal part.

BruhMoment65: I liked this chapter. Its kinda intriguing that you're including business politics in the last 2 chapters and how it's affected 2 of the most beloved characters in the Pokemon universe. It's almost done right. I feel like there is no basis or example yet to bounce off from. But by including those types of examples into a story would make it too clunky and aimless. I like the idea that the PokeCast is dealing with an interpretation of real world politics. I would love to see an actual fanfic about it, rather than exposition and examples. Aside from that: wouldn't it be interesting that Lillie and Sun's first meeting with Ash was through Hau flicking through the channel's in a Pokemon Center and stumbling into Ash's live performance?

Me: Thanks, I mean I'm introducing this to the readers as much as it is introduced to Ash himself. He learns about these things as he enters the adult stage of life. His view isn't as black or white as before. He starts seeing greys and that's part of maturing. I think the closest we see something like this, is with Palermo and Serena. I mean, the 'come with me and you'll be famous' is kind of mentioning the agents that work towards earning their represented chances to become famous. With this it felt like if Serena didn't go with Palermo, she would never triumph. The softies in OLM mean to tell that Serena will triumph despite not being represented by a well known and connected agent, like Aria did. I feel like a story that fully showcases these issues would be too dark for the fantasy story people want in the end. While working as a designer, I learned that people never know what they want. About a possible omake or something, yeah haha that would be fun!

Reader: Somewhere in Kalos, Palermo considers starting male Showcases for the title of Kalos King. Great chapter that had Ash show his full experience with contest and showcases despite mostly being a spectator. Drew's analysis of Ash was spot on too, I'm pretty sure Ash would pick up his Ashley persona from Celadon to compete in Showcases if he could bond with his Pokemon more. It's weird for me to read your douche Hugh character since the only impression I have of him is from the BW 2 game's anime trailer that portrays him as a friendly rival.

Me: It should be a thing, I thought that there were several characters along the series that would fit the bill haha. Yeah, Drew certainly knows Ash and understands his drive to become a better trainer, it's for his Pokemon in the end. And I feel like XY missed the chance in bringing a cross-dresser Ash, almost all series had one at certain point. About Hugh, yeah his character is mostly an OC that I wanted to have a searchable description because I'm too lazy in writing and describing OC. That's it mostly. Also his design is one of the bests among the rivals in the games.

Ashpool: Should have Drew meet Dartrix, his Alolan variant. Both have the hair flipping habit.

Me: Totally! That's true! I didn't see that one coming! *Mind working…
