No 26. Concussion (300 words)

Although sudden, the hit wasn't really unexpected. Ever since day one, Chase had attracted the unwanted attention of the school's jocks. Even though he didn't exactly remember that day. Usually he tried to avoid them. Though, the resounding smack as the ball bounced against his head was clear evidence he had failed this time. Roaring laughter arose from the group of bullies as Chase lost his balance, smacking his head against a nearby bench.

The next moment, Chase blinked his eyes open from the ground. The jocks were gone. Instead there was a faint ringing in his ears and a loud pounding in his head. Chase groaned, trying to push himself up.

The world blurred before his eyes, sending him swaying slightly. Nausea pushed against his throat, and Chase collapsed back to the ground with another miserable groan. He rested his head against the cool grass for a moment, taking deep breaths.

Don't throw up, don't throw up, don't throw up.

Slowly, Chase pushed himself up into sitting. Feeling his head, he found a rather large bump on the back – where the ball had hit – and a small cut on his forehead – from hitting the bench. Chase let out a low sigh. At least it wasn't worse.

With gritted teeth, Chase got up on his feet. His legs shook a little, but overall it was a manageable task. Besides, he didn't have the time to wait any longer. If he did, his siblings would come looking for him when he was late home. Logically, that probably would have been better. But Chase really didn't want to have this discussion here and now – he'd rather wait until he was home behind closed doors.

The world wasn't swaying, his vision wasn't blurry, and he wasn't throwing up. It's fine, he told himself.
