Watts was on his way back to the station. He was expecting to see the others there after the warehouse. He hoped Crabtree and Higgins would be back by now, otherwise he would have to go and find them as well! His carriage finally made it to the station house. It was pretty quiet outside with no sight of the other carriage anywhere. Watts tipped his hat to the driver and then went inside.

"Hello." He called out hoping he would get an answer.

No answer came however. He was quite glad in a way. At least he would have some time to look through the note Murdoch had given him in peace. Miss James was waiting for him however, and gave him a big fright as he encountered him.

"Miss James! Don't do that!" Watts moaned, putting a hand to his forehead.

"I was just waiting here. You were the one who came in without saying anything." Miss James rolled her eyes.

Watts sat down putting the note on the desk. Miss James was intrigued but knew from previous experience that Watts didn't divulge. She would leave it out for now.

"Have you seen the others?" She asked, still staring at the note on the desk Watts had bought in.

"Not since earlier. I thought they would be back by now." Watts shook his head.

"So did I. I heard they were going to a warehouse about something but they left before I could hear anymore."

"Probably looking for Crabtree and Higgins. They were missing."

"Right." Miss James rubbed her hands together, really hoping Watts would tell her about the note without asking him.

"Was there something else?" Watts noticed her looking nervous.

"That note." Miss James blurted.

"It's from Detective Murdoch. He wants me to look into it." Watts went to grab the note away.

"How did he get it?"

"Doesn't matter. Now I'm sure you have a lot of work to do." Watts waved her away.

Miss James sighed internally. She tried. She then went back to the morgue hoping she might get a chance later to look further into the note. Watts made sure she was gone and then got the note out again.

The writing wasn't exactly easy to read and he could only just make it out. Obviously someone who doesn't have a lot of experience with writing. He tapped his pen on the desk thinking. The telephone then rang across the bullpen and he answered it.

"Station house No.4" He said into the receiver still looking at the note.

"Watts. Is that you?" The inspector's voice came through.

"Sir, I thought you were on holiday?"

"I am! I only have a few minutes before Margaret comes back in. I've rung several times but no one has answered."

"Well everyone's busy sir."

"I know that Watts!"

"Well was there something you really wanted or were you just checking in?"

"The case. How's it going?"

"Well. I think."

Watts then heard Margaret's voice on the other side of the phone. Obviously the inspector had left his wife for a few minutes. Knowing Margaret this wasn't going to please her one bit!

"I've got to go. When Sam comes back, tell her to ring me about the case." The other line then went dead.

Watts shrugged his shoulders and put the phone down. He then went back to the note. It intrigued him. He did think about the others and where they might be but put it in the back of his mind for now. They would be back soon enough.

Murdoch awoke suddenly from his sleep. He put his hand up to his head to nurse what seemed like a very bad headache. He looked around the room and found he was alone. Julia must have been called away to work. He sat back in his bed. He tried to make sense of his dream whilst he noticed a shadow lurking by the door. Murdoch watched as it moved into the room getting closer and closer to him. He turned when he saw the shadow stop by the bedside.

"Miss James!" Murdoch sighed.

Miss James was standing there nearly drenched with rain. She had been brought in a carriage but the rain had been so heavy that even just getting out of the carriage you could be soaked!

"Sorry to wake you." Miss James apologised, pulling up a chair to sit down.

"Don't worry I was already awake. Nightmare." Murdoch smiled.

"Hope it wasn't a bad one." Miss James smiled back.

"You look puzzled, Miss James. Is something bothering you?"

"Watts."

Murdoch already knew from just the name what she meant. Watts was good at his job and everything but he did annoy everyone all the time!

"What's he done this time?"

"I would like to get involved with the case like Sam asked me to but Watts won't even let me look at a very important piece of evidence."

"Sounds like him."

"He's getting worse. Since you and the inspector are away, he seems to think he runs the place."

"Well technically…."

"I mean it's not like I'm asking him to tell me all his secrets! If he wants my help then he won't get it until he apologises."

Murdoch sighed quietly. When Miss James got mad, she really got mad! True, everyone in the station was like that.

"I'm sure it will change when the others say something." Murdoch said, trying to calm her down.

"If they were there!" Miss James huffed.

"What do you mean?"

Before Miss James could tell Murdoch what she meant, doctors and nurses ran past the door. Julia came into the room with tears in her eyes. Murdoch and Miss James turned as soon as she came in.

"Julia what is it?" Murdoch asked worriedly.

"Someone's found a police carriage in a ditch. It has station house number four on the side of it." Julia managed to keep from sobbing.

Miss James looked at the detective. Murdoch leant on the bed as got up from the bed. Julia rushed to his side.

"Where do you think you're going?" Julia asked, raising one of her eyebrows.

"I have to help." Murdoch said through gritted teeth.

"No you don't." Miss James backed Julia.

Murdoch wasn't going to listen however. He continued to stand and get his clothes together. Julia and Miss James stood to one side.

"William, don't." Julia almost begged, knowing Murdoch would just brush her off again.

Murdoch strode off to get changed. Julia looked at Miss James. Miss James nodded and headed back to the station to give them some peace. Julia leant on the hospital bed waiting for Murdoch to return. As a doctor and his wife she would say anything to stop him, but as a friend and colleague she wouldn't stop him.

"How do I look?" Murdoch said, coming back into the room with his usual suit.

"Back to normal." Julia shrugged.

"I won't be long. I'll just make sure everyone is alright and then I'll be right back here and getting told off again." Murdoch reassured her.

"How do I know that'll change?" Julia sighed, smiling.

Murdoch smiled and kissed her on the forehead. He managed to get out of the door without any doctors noticing him. Lucky for him. Julia made sure she got him out however, even though she knew Murdoch didn't like that.

000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Watts picked up the phone once again as it rang again. It had been ringing non stop since he had arrived! Miss James rushed back into the station out of breath. Watts put a finger up to his mouth which annoyed her even further.

"Yes this is station house No.4." Watts spoke.

Miss James watched Watts' face change as he heard the news. Watts then slammed the phone down and raced to the door before Miss James could utter a word.

"Watts wait." She called after him.

"Didn't you hear? There's been a crash with one of our carriages." Watts shouted.

"Of course I did but I'm sure they have enough people dealing with it right now. We can wait here for news." Miss James finally stopped him.

"What are you talking about?!"

"Detective Murdoch is already on his way and I'm sure the other station houses have responded."

"But…"

"We can stay here and wait for news and take a closer look at the case or that note you've bought." Miss James went back to the station hoping Watts would join her.

Watts looked down the street one more time, sighed and then followed her into the station house. She was right. There were probably a lot of people there already and they wouldn't want the scene crowded with them as well! Miss James sat closest to the blackboard keeping an eye on it just in case they had missed anything.

"So what's this note you're so interested in?" Miss James asked Watts as he sat down.

"A brick went through Murdoch's window and this was attached to it." Watts got the note out.

"A brick!"

"Yeah. This is a warning that if we go further into the case then we'll be sorry." Watts passed the note to her.

"Well, it looks like they meant it." Miss James tutted.

"It's by one of the gang members I know that much."

"I'll post it on the board. Let's hope that the others will be able to get back safely and have a look at it." Miss James said.

Watts leant back in his chair as she did this. The blackboard looked more and more confusing as stuff was added to it. This note just made it more confusing.

"So, what now?"
