When it rains, it pours, and sometimes it's blessings that rain down on you. In the first three years since the Lopez-Pierces had gotten married Santana had become the youngest Chief of Cardiology ever at St. Raphael's. Tino couldn't be more proud. She was performing less surgeries and trying to balance out her life. She and Brittany wanted to start planning their family. Brittany had worked out a teaching schedule that she enjoyed and was planning on going part time within the next two years. She had been offered the job as artistic director at the New York Dance Academy but she decided to decline the position. She was considering opening her own studio after a couple of years home with the baby. She had decided that's what she wanted to spend her wedding gift money on, something she can build into her very own.
Baby fever had been hitting the Lopez-Pierces pretty hard. Seeing a pregnant Quinn had their ovaries ready to explode. It had been a shock when Quinn had informed everyone that there would be a couple of new additions to the family, first Joe, and then the baby they would be having within the next 7 months. She would be taking a leave of absence and she would invest in Joe's private physical therapy practice so that he could be there for the baby. They already had a few therapists in mind to work with them and they seemed to have it all planned out even if the baby had been a wonderful surprise.
Mike and Tina were still going strong. No talk of marriage yet, at least not openly, but they had been living together almost since Brittany first moved out and things were going well with them. Mike told Brittany that he loved Tina, not that she didn't already know. They were happy, and that's what mattered most.
Tino had decided to take a teaching position at a medical university. They offered him a great salary and it would allow him and Mari to be nearby to help out with their grandchildren. Sure they liked traveling, but nothing beat the thought of being around for not only Santana and Brittany's kids but also Quinn's. It was too tempting for them to pass up. They wanted to settle down and prepare for grandparenthood.
The Pierces were also torn about moving closer. They wanted to be closer to the baby but Whitney also wanted to be close to her aging parents. Brittany and Santana came up with a solution. They were still looking for a larger place and one became available in the same building. It did not have the same views as Santana's apartment, but it still had both water and park views, and it was a four bedroom with two bathroom and two half bathroom apartment. They decided that they would make an offer on it and that way they could keep Santana's original apartment for the family to come and be nearby and help whenever they wanted. Brittany's family, abuela, whomever wanted to come and stay for as long as they wanted could stay in their old place, and then Santana gets to keep her views that she couldn't tear herself away from. Secretly, Brittany never wanted to let go of the studio Santana built for her, either, so that solution was perfect. Plus, that was loads of free help for Quinn's baby and theirs when they finally started their family. Everybody wins.
When the family had gathered together for Joseph Jr.'s first birthday it was a huge celebration. Quinn had already noticed the change in Brittany and so she pulled Santana aside to ask her once and for all.
"So it looks like we will be having another one of these parties in the near future, huh?"
"You knocked up again, Fabray?"
"Nope, but your wife is."
"What are you talking about?"
"Don't you lie to me Santana Lopez, am I about to be an aunt?"
"It's too soon, Quinn."
"But she's pregnant?"
"She's 10 weeks, and I'm scared to death to talk about it yet."
"I understand."
"No, you don't Quinn."
"Is there something wrong?"
"No complications. Let's just say if everything goes right we were lucky we went ahead and purchased that apartment when it came up for sale."
"What are you saying Santana?"
"I'm saying I don't have to wish for a boy or a girl, I can wish for both."
"What?"
"Who the hell gave you your medical degree Fabray?"
"Stop beating around the bush Lo...OHHHHH!"
"Yes Dr. Quinn, medicine woman."
"Twins Santana?"
"Twins Quinn."
Quinn just stares at Brittany. Brittany catches them looking at her and instantly knows that Quinn knows. Brittany comes over to join the chat.
"Hey guys, what's up?"
"You tell me?" Quinn says.
"She knows." Santana says.
"Blabbermouth, I thought we were waiting another month or so." Brittany said.
"She figured it out, she's a doctor." Santana said.
"Don't worry, I won't tell anyone." Quinn says.
"I'm kind of glad somebody else knows. I'm super excited but the stress of the first trimester is a lot."
"Positive thoughts, Brittany." Quinn says.
"It's going to be alright, babe." Santana adds.
"I know."
"But today is about my nephew. Can't believe Joey is one already." Santana says.
"Yeah, time sure flies" Quinn replies.
"He's such a cutie. We're going to have to steal him for the night soon, if his grandparents don't beat us to it." Santana says.
"They spoil him so much, just imagine when they find out about the twins." Quinn adds.
"We were thinking of planning a barbecue or something to tell everyone in a few weeks, you have to be there", Brittany says.
"Where else would we be?" Quinn replies.
At 14 weeks Santana and Brittany are excited, and begin to plan to tell everyone the good news. They arrange for a barbecue and the Pierces and Brittany's grandparents drive down for the weekend. Abuela and the Lopezes are there as well as Mike and Tina and Quinn and Joe.
Santana and Brittany can barely contain the news. Almost as soon as everyone is there they begin their announcement.
"Ok everybody, attention please, my wife has some career news", Santana says.
All eyes fall on Brittany.
"Ok, As you all know I have been debating about starting my own studio. We wanted to call you here today to let you know that I will be doing just that in a couple of years, after Santana and I have had some time with these babies we're having."
Total chaos ensues. Santana and Brittany are mobbed. Everyone is super excited.
"Twins! Do you know what you're having? How far along are you"
The questions flood in from everywhere.
"We do not know what we are having yet, we're 15 weeks along." Brittany says.
"Have you started thinking of names. You really should be considering names", Whitney asked.
"I was thinking Madison and Mason" Brittany says.
"Something tells me two kids with those names would be a little too gleeful for my tastes", Santana says. "I personally was rooting for Rizzoli and Isles."
"You have got to be kidding me", Quinn says.
"Santana, we talked about this." Brittany says.
"Bonnie and Clyde, that would be so badass!" Santana counters. "Bette and Tina?"
"No" Brittany says.
"Janet and Jackson?" Santana pleads.
"You are not naming our children Santana. I will come up with something."
It was a bit of a exciting end to the pregnancy, with Brittany going on bed rest for the final month on account of the fact that she was big as a house and yet still thought she could hang around the dance studio verbally instructing dancers on how to get their stuff together. With Mike still working off Broadway in that Rachel Berry play and Brittany having to turn down the promotion to artistic director she wasn't happy with where she had to leave the dance company for now, but with not one but two babies on the horizon it just wasn't possible.
Santana was set to start her family leave from the hospital in 10 days, and so she was working like a mad woman trying to make sure that everything ran smoothly while she was gone. Quinn had been spending the day with Brittany as Santana's secret spy making sure she took it easy. Santana really should have known that her wife, being as energetic as she was, would have a problem sitting still near the end of her pregnancy. This is the same woman that went through a very horny stage in her pregnancy and woke her wife up dressed like a very pregnant cowgirl for a lap dance. Not that Santana minded, she's not turning down a lap dance no matter what, but Brittany could have simply said she wanted a little sex and would have gotten the same result without needing to be helped off of Santana's lap at the end.
Brittany and Quinn were having a little lunch, as Joey seemed to be trying to convince Brittany to share a little milk with him since Quinn had been weaning him. He loves to nuzzle into Brittany's breasts even though he can no longer fit in her lap. He will sit next to her and fondly remember the days when Quinn would offer up her boobs without debate. Santana has warned him more than once that she feels his pain but she's not going to take him leering at her wife like that. In reality, Joey just loves his aunts. Brittany and Santana are great with Joey. They love their nephew and they are eager to introduce him to his new cousins.
Brittany had been feeling a little discomfort all morning, but when she began complaining about the need to poop all morning Quinn got Santana on the phone.
"San, I think I'm going to bring Brittany by the hospital. Don't panic, but I think she's going into labor."
Apparently Santana missed the whole "don't panic" part of the conversation.
"Quinn, I'm coming home."
"Santana, no. I haven't even told Brittany what I'm thinking yet, but I know that look. I will call you as soon as we get there and you can come downstairs and meet me at the obstetrician's office. Call Dr. Holiday and tell her we're on the way. I'll have Joe meet me so he can grab Joey."
"Quinn, she better take good care of my wife. You're the one who said it was okay for me to trust someone named Doc Holiday with my wife and children."
"Santana, she has been amazing with you and Brittany and you know it. Stop threatening me and call the doctor. She is nowhere near ready but I'd like to get her checked out to see if she has started labor, that way you can finish up and meet us downstairs."
Santana met Brittany and Quinn at the doctor's office, who confirmed that Brittany was going into labor 2 weeks early.
Lucas and Lillian Lopez Pierce were born early the next morning after a long labor, surrounded by more family and friends than Santana or Brittany had ever known at their age. Their children would start out with relationships they never experienced. An instant best friend in each other, a cousin to grow up with. Santana had never been more in love with her wife than in that moment looking at those two little babies and the amazing woman who gave them life.
Brittany had gotten over her fears of having kids who would grow up with the same challenges that she had. With time, with therapy, and with love she had come to understand that life could be hard for anyone, and that the people who love you mold you into the person that you become. She married a woman born with a silver spoon in her mouth to parents who adored her who had traumatic struggles just like she did. Her wife was intelligent, outspoken and strong but still suffered with self esteem and finding love in all of it's forms. Brittany was told as a child that she wasn't smart enough, and yet she could do things with numbers others could only dream of. She believed those people deep inside that convinced her that being different was wrong, until she found dance, which showed her that being different was the most beautiful thing in the world.
She saw her wife find love and the courage to heal. She found the same. Now she is a mother, something she always wanted and always feared, and yet with her wife by her side, her family surrounding them offering the four of them all of their love and wisdom, she knows that Lucas and Lillian will be alright. They'll hopefully have it easier than Santana and Brittany did, but there will still be pain. There will still be a million ways for a heart to break, and then something, sometimes someone, unexpected will come along and fix it.
