As the memories progressed, the group witnessed the next time Lily and James saw each other at the muggle park. Meeting Lucy, and his confession of what had really happened the night Lily first got pregnant.
Needless to say, that "her" big brother, Thor was ready to take his hammer to James. But then found himself pleased at the young man's true change of heart later as he started to have more positive interactions with Lily, and Lucy.
He never made fun of her, despite knowing and seeing a couple Déjà vu moments with the girl's hair, especially when it hung in her dark eyes. The poor girl had at one-point inherited Snape's oily texture then Lily found a special formulated Shampoo and Conditioner to tame the oily slickness and bring out the more luscious waves and volume that came from her mother.
That was also when James discovered there was a different side to the kid, a "feisty" side. He just couldn't help himself one day, seeing her hair the way it was. He made one little comment as he reached out to touch it. When suddenly, he could hear Lily dying of laughter behind him. James had turned around asking "what?" when his girlfriend held up a hand mirror, showing him that his own hair was gone and replaced with pink and blue colored cotton candy! What's worse was that the flies and insects had noticed too!
"Lily!"
"It wasn't me, Lucy…"
The little girl snickered as a "wicked" smile crossed her lips. "Don't mess with my hair"
James looked at Lily with wide eyes, "She just-?"
"Uh-uh," said her mother still smiling. "Lu is prankster in her own right."
From then on, James and Lucy truly bonded as he, Sirius and Remus attempted to teach her the ways of the Marauders. Peter, on the other hand… the little rat was just plain scared of her. Ever since the first time he came over to the house.
At Lily's insistence, Lucy was growing up with both the Wizard and Muggle culture's forms of entertainment, including their movies. She had just watched "The Lion King" and was interested in playing out her favorite scenes with her mother's help.
They were reenacting the one Mufasa was giving Simba tips on "Pouncing," Lucy had even changed herself into an actual lion cub for the part. As she stayed "Low, to the ground" Peter came through the font door asking for James when the cub pounced, tackling him to the floor, making him shift into the rat.
As he tried to scamper away, Lucy caught him by his tail. Lifting him up as she quoted in her head another line,
"Life's not far, is it? You see I-! Well, I shall never be King. And YOU- shall never see the light of another day. Mm Humm, Adieu."
She finished holding him above her open mouth, as he screeched and squealed at the top of his lungs.
"Lucy!" ordered James, appearing out of nowhere. "Drop him"
"-On the ground" Remus added.
The cub did as she was ordered, disgusted as the rat scurried off. She changed back into her human form.
"Dad… You made me loose my lunch"
"-Your mother's cooking getting that bad?" asked Sirius as he quickly dodged a soup ladle that was thrown. "Just jokin' Lil's!"
James chuckled and knelt down to Lucy. "Trust me Cub, you don't wanna eat that Rat. He'll give ya indigestion. Isn't that right Wormtail?" he asked, seeing his longtime friend curled up against the backwall in his human form as well.
"That's- r-right James, you don't want to eat me" he squeaked. "N-Nice K-kitty,"
Lucy laughed, "I was just playing with you. I wasn't actually going to eat you"
"J-Just p-playing?" Peter's eyes raised to the ceiling as he passed out.
"What House was he in again?"
"Gryffindor, like the rest of us," said Remus.
"Then he must have cheated on his test"
"It's impossible to cheat on a test at Hogwarts, little miss Lucy" said Sirius, "I would know…" Thinking of all the endless detentions reprimands, by Professor McGonagall and little would be electric shocks, the anti-cheating spell gave off when he tried.
...
Later that night when Lucy was getting tucked into bed, her mother asked a question: "Lu, why did you call James your "Dad?" Were you still play acting or…?"
"Because that's who he is isn't he? He spends time with me, playing and teaching me stuff, like you do. Plus, you are always kissing and hugging when you think I'm not looking, like Grandma and Grandpa. And if he isn't then who is he? Where's my real Daddy? How come he doesn't come to see me?" Lucy asked, rapidly firing questions as she sat up, looking her mother in the eyes wanting the truth.
Lily sighed, despite knowing that this discussion was going to come up sooner or later. "It's complicated…Not easy to explain Lu,"
"Just try?" she pleaded.
"Alright, James is not your real Father. As in he didn't create you.
The man who did that, he and I were really close at one point. We grew up together. But sometimes, life points each of us in a different direction. Like North and South, East or West, and we grow further and further apart." She said, demonstrating with her hands. "That's what happened with us and I didn't get a chance to tell him about you. So, he doesn't know you're here, and I have no idea where he is now. But I hope he's safe" Lily answered sadly before changing the subject.
"But James, could still become part of our family?"
"How?" responded the little girl, bewildered.
"He asked me to marry him Lu"
"He did?"
"Yes Honey," she said holding out the box with the dazzling diamond ring inside.
"Pretty!"
"Yes, it is. James has been holding onto this for a while. He wanted your approval as well. Because you are part of this Lucy. If we were to marry, he would become your new Dad, for real"
"You mean Stepdad,"
Not all Stepparents are bad, Lu. James confessed he's grown to love you as his own. You calling him "Dad" tonight, sealed the deal when he asked."
"What did you say?"
"I told him I had to talk to you before I gave him my answer. You don't have to say anything now. Just sleep on it and let me know. Good night Sweetie," said her mother as she kissed her good night and shut off the lights. Electricity was one thing Lily loved and missed about the Muggle world and was glad to be living back in a home that still had it.
...
A couple days passed and Lily spent her time, teaching Lucy about the different herbs and vegetation that grew in their garden after discovering the girl had a knack for it while helping Hagrid with his own patch last weekend, when they visited the school. Seeing her old Head of house, Professor McGonagall.
The elder witch was already so impressed by the three, almost four-year old's reading skills as she sat, curled up on the teacher's lap and read aloud a page from a first year book. Minerva, as she insisted Lily call her now, gushed about how she couldn't wait until Lucy was old enough to attended Hogwarts and she could help guide the lass to reach her full potential in whatever she set her sharp mind to"
Of course Lily had joked about how she didn't want her baby girl to grow up so fast. Her old teacher had just smiled, knowingly.
"Look Mum! An Airplane!" her daughter said, excitedly breaking her mother out of her thoughts. As she pointed up in the sky, watching it fly overhead as the child happily held her arms out and started making engine noises as she ran across the yard. Lily smiled to herself, guessing that tonight was the night...
"Mum, are you sure about this?" Lucy questioned, scarily eyeing the hovering broomstick that her mother just mounted. "It doesn't look very safe to me"
Lily softly chuckled, "It's fine, Honey. I know what I'm doing. I've done this before. Countless times at school. Flying is something you never forget. And I know how much you want to" she teased. "Especially after seeing Aladdin and Peter Pan with the magic carpet and the pixie dust. But this way, is better. You actually have something solid beneath you"
"I don't know," said Lucy backing up.
"Well, alright then. See you in a little bit" said her mother as she took off, disappearing into the night.
"Mum!" called Lucy as she squinted trying to find her amongst the darkness, when out of nowhere, an arm snaked around her waist, from behind. Lifting her up and onto the broom as she squealed. "Mum?!" Lily's laughter vibrating against her back as she nudged her daughter closer to her, blocking the bulk of the wind, keeping her warmer.
"Open your eyes, Lucy" her mother whispered. Causing the little girl's eye lids to open and take in her surroundings.
"Whoa! How high up are we?" she asked, as the clouds above shifted, showing the moon and a bit of faint stars surrounding. "It's better if you don't know, right away. Given how scared of heights you were before we took off. Just know, I won't let anything happen to you" answered her mother.
"Hello Lily Fire! And little Lucy as well?!" greeted James, as he came up alongside them on his own broom.
"James," said Lily, with a smile. "What are you doing here?"
"I stopped by your house to see you and imagine my surprise when I looked up saw the most beautiful witch flying above me. So, I figured, I'd better come on up and say "Hello," before she flies away. Now I'm in the presence of two lovely witches. Hi Lu, how do you like it up here?"
"It's beautiful," the little girl answered, still mesmerized by the scenery.
"This is her first time on a broom," her mother whispered to him.
The young man's eyes widened, his face paling in a comical fashion. "F-first time? That's blasphemy! She should have at least been on a toy broom as a baby!" he fiercely whispered back.
"I wasn't around as much when she was a baby, baby because of school. I've been trying to make up for lost time as she's gotten older. And I'm still nowhere done yet, with approx. 15 years ahead. But this is a good start. Lucy is a little afraid of heights. So, I am going to begin taking her out for little flights at night when she can't see the ground so clearly and it helps with the muggle neighbors being two acres over"
James nodded, "That's a good plan, and when she's ready. Sirius and I will start teaching her in the daylight, about Quidditch"
"Don't get ahead of yourself James" Lily lightly scolded, before sighing. "I told her. Everything. About Severus, and about the possibility of us getting married"
"Possibility? Lily? Are you saying "No?"
"I can't say "I will," James. Not without consulting her first. Otherwise, with her imagination. She'll think it's a wicked muggle fairytale come true. Stepparents, particularly the "Mothers" are known as "Evil." Because if something happens to the biological parent and they end up dying. Then the Stepparent usually treats the child like dirt out of resentment."
"That will never happen with me Lil's. I love Lucy, and I also intend on giving her my name. So, no one will question it."
...
Lily and James smiled at each other and Lucy when she finally gave her blessing a day or two later.
Under the "condition" that she didn't have to call James "Dad," if she didn't want to, now that she knew the truth. Ironically that is what she ultimately kept calling him and referred to her biological or "birth" Dad as "Father."
It was a lovely wedding. James and Lily took the time to make sure Lucy felt included where she wanted to be. From cake testing, to the beautiful dresses. She was even doubled as the flower girl and ring bearer at the ceremony when Peter was running late.
But the most beautiful sight in the room was seeing her mother walk down the isle in that gorgeous dress, hair, and make up. She looked like a real live Princess. Accompanied by her Grandpa, and witnessed by their family and friends.
Sadly, James' parents were not there in the audience. Having died shortly after he graduated of the Wizarding disease known as the "Dragon Pox" They had also been quite elderly, (having had their son later in life.)
But still, the day was not ruined. It meant the world to James to have his "brothers" standing up there with him. Even Wormtail, who had quietly snuck in the back row when he finally arrived.
When it was time for the rings, James had knelt down to Lucy's level as she held them out. Calling her a "Daughter of his Name and of his Heart" Thus making her truly smile, quickly hugging him back as Lily proudly stroked her hair while holding the bouquet in another hand.
Thor had never seen any version of Loki that happy and he truly felt for her and his niece. Knowing that this story did not end well. Leading them into the predicament they were in now. The others felt very much the same as they silently waited for it to take a turn for the worst.
...
The "good" times lasted up until three months later when Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters finally made their presence known by targeting a double decker bus filled with muggles for baiting. There were no survivors, and among the dead were Lily's parents.
Something Petunia loudly blamed Lily for at the funeral. Making James come to her aid and meeting Vernon. He wasn't the least bit intimidated by the big and round man. Already telling he was a Bully and a Coward. Spouting mean and prejudice remarks to and about those who were different and while inwardly fearing their abilities.
Though Lily swore to Petunia that she had nothing to do with it. Her snooty big sister refused to acknowledge that. Stating that "You Freaks are all the same," and to stay away from her and Vernon. For they were getting married and she wasn't invited. As far as Petunia was concerned, she didn't even have a Sister.
Thus, breaking Lily's heart even more and causing a bigger rift between the two.
The only saving grace was that Lucy wasn't there to be targeted. For she was sick at home with common cold, being babysat by Remus. Ever since Lily had asked him to watch her that day in the Park. The werewolf and Lucy had developed a quiet yet strong friendship.
During the times that he would start to doubt himself, that little girl would take his hand and quote a line from Rudyard Kipling's Jungle book: "For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack" Meaning that he wasn't alone. Once she had explained it to him. Moony looked up and saw the smiling faces of his own make shift pack, realizing she was right. And they all were going to need each other with what was coming.
For the attacks were just beginning. The next victims were a group of Muggle borns who'd just been shopping in Diagon Alley when the Dark mark appeared in the sky. Their bodies were all found with the word "Mudblood" carved somewhere into their flesh. Be it their arm or on their face.
Steve Rodgers grimaced when he saw this.
Mentally remembering and comparing it to the news reels of the war footage, he had seen when he was trying to enlist. It looked to him that "Voldemort" and his followers were the Wizarding version of Hitler and his Nazis. Taking place fifty to sixty years after the original terrorists.
Given Voldemort's presumed age. Didn't he learn anything from "history" of how this turned out?
Even Director Nick Fury could see how bad this terrorist was. And he was even further astounded how magical Britain attempted to keep it under wraps from its Muggle government. Because he had a feeling this "Dark Lord" wasn't going to stop until he'd conquered the world.
Then came the taboo of actually saying his name. And Wizarding kind started referring to him as "You-Know-Who" which irritated Tony to no end. As he consistently kept shouting "Just say his Damn Name already! They're just giving him more power"
Bruce silently nodded in agreement while on the inside, The Hulk was roaring with anger wanting to be let out so he could smash the bad Wizard.
Thor, in the meantime wondered why Heimdall never informed him or the All- Father about this happening on Midgard. He, Lady Sif and the Warriors Three would have gladly come to protect and fight this threat.
Then they saw the Marauders and Lily's old Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore approach them with a proposition about joining the secret group he was putting together to fight back against Voldemort called, "The Order of the Phoenix." Since the Ministry was on the verge of being taken over and James' job as an Auror was in danger.
With the fire still burning in her belly from her parents' murder and the drive to fight and protect her remaining loved ones. Lily was the first to say "Yes," followed by James and everyone else.
Then the training began, led by Alastor Moody. They trained long and hard, fighting many battles with Death Eaters along the way Some of which Moody lost some body parts, even one of his eyes. Gaining himself a false magical eye and the moniker "Mad-eye Moody"
Making Stark snap his fingers going, "Why didn't I think of that?" gazing over at their own "Mad-Eye" Fury, who simply rolled his good eye while silently admiring the crotchety Wizard's training techniques and philosophy.
Before they knew it, James and Lily had taken on Voldemort, along with Frank and Alice Longbottom. Each couple were given an "opportunity" to join him. (Despite Lily's "filthy" magical heritage, she was powerful and strong and the Dark Lord wanted that.)
They said "No," Defying him, not once, not twice but three times.
After that last encounter, Lily found herself continuously worn out: Sick, and that wasn't just it. Something inside her was changing.
She was going to have a baby…
