A/N: Hey! I just wanted to put a trigger warning at the start of this chapter because there are mentions of suicide in some of the Jay sections and at the very end. I won't be offended if you choose not to read this chapter as a whole, or if you want to just stick to the first Jay scene and all the Hailey ones sans the very end.
Jay slowly walked up to the dark and quiet bullpen just after 7am on Monday. He flipped the light switch to flood the area in a soft glow. There were still notes taped to the whiteboard and a half-finished water bottle sitting on Vanessa's desk.
He made his way down the middle and stopped at his desk to turn and take everything in. He did it. The room was his.
He laughed under his breath and shook his head. The framed picture of Drew and Blake on his desk caught his eye, so he picked it up and smiled at it. Two years ago, he had occasional thoughts of babies with Hailey, but he never pictured adopting, and now he couldn't picture his life without those boys.
He lightly hit the frame to his palm then walked into Hank's office – his office. It was his office now.
The desk was cleared of any of the framed pictures he'd seen countless times over the years. He placed the picture of Drew and Blake on the corner before sitting in the big chair. It was comfortable enough, but part of him wanted to buy a new one.
Hank had left the couch and the two chairs in their along with the flags on the wall; other than that, it was like Jay was moving into a brand new college dorm – well, it's what he felt like moving into a college dorm would be like.
There was a folded piece of paper in the middle of the desk with Jay's name on it, so he picked it up and opened it.
You did it, Halstead. I'm just a phone call away, but I'll be by tomorrow to check in. Take today to get your feet wet. Trust the unit. We've all got your back. – Voight. PS: Check the cabinet.
Jay smiled slightly and reread the note twice then stuck it in the top drawer taking note it was already filled with any sort of office supplies he could possible need.
He spun in the chair and started opening up the cabinet doors. He found old binders, recent case files, clipboards, a few badge holders, and Al's vest. He stared at the vest until his eyes burned. Letting out a breath, he tucked it back in the cabinet then opened the last door.
Inside was a new bottle of bourbon with a sticky note on it.
Tip 1 – always have a drink on hand.
Jay laughed and shook his head. "Thanks, Sarge," he whispered.
Hailey fixed the waistband of her maternity jeans and sighed. Part of her was still holding back and wishing she could fit into her normal jeans…but damn these were comfortable.
She turned to look at her reflection in the mirror and smoothed her shirt out over her small bump. She needed everything with her mom to go well. It was just lunch, but lunch could last much longer than necessary with her mom…or it could end much too soon thanks to her dad.
If he showed up, she wasn't staying.
"Mama! Mama!"
Hailey grabbed her phone off the bathroom counter and hurried out of the bathroom to Blake's nursery where he was trying to climb onto the rocking chair. His little legs were kicking as he huffed and grunted while the chair quickly moved back and forth.
"Blake," Hailey breathed and hurried over to grab him.
"Mama," Blake reached his arms out toward the small stuffed dog sitting in the corner of the chair.
Hailey sighed and grabbed it for him, "Is this what you wanted?"
Blake smiled and hugged the dog.
Hailey relaxed and kissed the top of his head, "You need to be careful."
Blake looked up at her then touched the dog to her face with a soft giggle.
Hailey smiled back at him and shook her head, "You're too silly. Come on, baby boy, Mommy needs to get you changed, then we're going to lunch."
As she slowly and deliberately changed his diaper in an effort to push off lunch, Hailey took the time to tickle Blake's sides and play with his toes. She needed to focus on him right now. He could make any cloudy day a little brighter.
Jay walked back up the stairs to the bullpen, but now with a box of subs for everyone in one hand and a case of pop in the other.
The morning was quiet. Everyone greeted him then went about their day. He didn't need to do much since their last case was just wrapping up, so he spent most of the time signing paperwork and making his new title official. He'd also finished setting up his pictures on his desk – his favorite was the latest pregnancy picture of Hailey against the wall in their room with Blake in her arms just barely resting on her stomach. He'd managed to print it off the night before just so it could be included in his office.
Jay set the subs on Hailey's old desk, "Eat up."
Adam smirked, "Look at the sergeant buying lunch."
"Big paycheck, big benefits," Kevin laughed.
Vanessa grabbed one and smiled, "Thanks, Jay."
He nodded and sat on the edge of the desk, "Not a problem."
Kim put her hands up so Jay would toss one to her, "How's it going though? You've been busy."
Jay shrugged once he'd sent a turkey sub her way, "It's fine. Kinda weird."
"Took a picture of you," Adam held up his phone, "Looking real good in your fancy office."
"Delete that," Jay unwrapped his own sub, "I don't need that."
"Your wife does," Adam waved his phone around with his thumb over the send button, "Three, two, one."
Hailey ignored her phone vibrating in her pocket as she carried Blake into the diner. He babbled along quietly while playing with her hair.
She smiled at him, "Yeah? Oh really?"
Blake nodded and pulled at her hair, "Mama," he blew out several noises and patted her face.
"Goodness, what a day," Hailey kissed his nose before looking around the restaurant. She didn't see her mom, so she sighed and made her way to a small, familiar booth grabbing a highchair on the way. She tried holding Blake in one arm while also putting the cover over the wooden chair. He wiggled around and reached for the blue material.
"Mama," he said.
"I know, I know, you love restaurants," Hailey shifted her hold on him, "Just give me a minute."
"Hailey Anne."
Hailey looked up to see her mom crossing the diner waving at her.
"Hey," Hailey breathed out. She tried straightening the cover again as she balanced Blake in her arms.
"I can help," Christine put her arms out toward her.
Hailey stepped back and tightened her hold on Blake, "Thank you."
"Oh," Christine hesitated then slowly nodded, "All right." She smiled slightly and finished putting the cover on the highchair.
"Thank you," Hailey set Blake in the chair, "He can't get sick and these things are filthy."
Christine nodded again and sat down, "I understand."
Blake squealed quietly and pulled at the two stuffed fish adhered to the cover. He chewed on one of them and giggled at Hailey.
She couldn't help but smile, "Yeah, you like doing things you're not supposed to, don't you, silly boy?"
Blake laughed and squished the soft fish in his fist.
"He's so much bigger than last time I saw him," Christine said while slipping her coat off.
Hailey winced at that memory. She took a deep breath, "Let's not talk about that. How…how're you?"
"Oh," Christine waved her hand, "Everything's fine. I didn't want to have lunch to tell you about myself. I want to hear everything about you." She reached her hand across the table.
Hailey glanced at it then grabbed a menu, "Life's been a little crazy, but we're good."
Christine slowly nodded, "Great. How's work been?"
"Uh, I'm currently taking a leave of absence," Hailey smiled slightly and looked at Blake, "I wanted to stay home with him and baby girl, just for a couple years until-"
"Baby girl?" Christine repeated, "You're having a baby girl?"
Hailey laughed and set a hand on her stomach, "Yeah, we just found out last week."
"Oh, Hailey," Christine breathed, "Baby, I am so happy for you. A little girl! My baby girl's having a baby girl."
Hailey smiled, "Thank you. We're very excited."
"Of course! Being pregnant with you and knowing I had a gorgeous super star inside me was some of the best nine months of my life," Christine smiled back, "It was rough, but I loved it."
Hailey's smile started faltering, "Rough?"
"Oh," Christine scoffed, "You were a super star because you took all of my own beauty. I got so fat with you and my skin was absolutely horrid. I was addicted to peanut butter too; now I can't even smell a PB&J without dry heaving."
Hailey tried to laugh, but the sound that slipped through her lips was much closer to a whine.
"Like I said, I loved being pregnant with you when I wasn't having morning sickness even all the way into the third trimester," Christine continued, "And the idea of your dad having his little prinkípissa just melted my heart. He's going to be ecstatic to hear you're having a little girl."
Hailey breathed in and closed her eyes. Prinkípissa. They might have called her a princess, but they sure as hell didn't treat her like one growing up.
Kevin dropped some paperwork on Jay's desk and smirked, "Need your signature, Sarge."
Jay rolled his eyes, "Knock it off." He picked up the forms paper-clipped together, "What's this for?"
"That CI thing I'm doing tomorrow," Kevin plopped himself on the couch, "How's it really going?"
Jay grabbed a pen and stared at the line labeled 'sergeant' at the bottom of the top page, "Uh…it's good."
Kevin chuckled and shook his head. He pushed himself up enough to reach over to the door and shut it, "Really?"
Jay glanced up once he'd signed his name. He sucked in a breath then settled back in his chair, "It feels off. Like I don't really belong here."
Kevin shook his head, "Not true at all. Out of all of us, you're the one who's earned this the most."
"You can't say that," Jay ran a hand over his hair, "You all deserve to be in here."
Kevin shrugged, "That may be in the future, but you've put in the work to be here today. Maybe when you retire, this'll be my office. What's it come with?" He grabbed a random frame off Jay's desk and smiled at the picture of everyone from Jay and Hailey's wedding, "Think I'll keep this one."
Jay chuckled, "Go for it."
Kevin smirked and sat back, "I'm not joking, though, this is real cool. You've been number two for a while, it's time you became number one."
"Don't even think about saying that to Adam," Jay laughed.
Kevin laughed with him, "I know. Walked into that."
"But thanks," Jay nodded slightly, "I…I needed to hear that. It's one thing to hear it from Hailey, but from you too…thanks."
"Not a problem," Kevin stood to grab the papers, but the door opened distracting him.
"Jay," Kim said then stepped to the side revealing the medical examiner, Tom Cranston.
"Hey," Jay stood up, "Nice to see you, it's been a while."
Tom nodded and entered the office to shake Jay's hand, "Congratulations."
"Thanks," Jay smiled slightly.
Kevin gave him a thumbs up.
Jay rolled his eyes and put his hands in his pockets, "So what brings you by?"
Tom took a deep breath, "You ready for your first big case, Sergeant?"
Hailey passed Blake a french fry, "He's still not walking, but he can pull himself up. I actually found him trying to climb onto the rocking chair today."
Christine laughed, "He's a little monkey."
"He is!" Hailey sipped her Sprite, "He's going to play some sort of sport, I just know it."
"Did Jay play anything?" Christine asked.
"Baseball for fun," Hailey shrugged, "He likes soccer too, though."
"And Drew?" Christine bit her sandwich then wiped her mouth, "Does he still like birds?"
Hailey nodded and pulled out her phone. She scrolled through her gallery for a minute then showed her mom the pictures of Drew on his birthday, "His day was made."
Christine laughed and looked through the pictures, "I love all of these. You and Jay are such good parents."
"Thank you," Hailey smiled and grabbed her phone back.
"Mum," Blake hit the table and reached for another fry.
Hailey laughed, "Yes? Do you need something?"
"Mama," Blake whined and opened and closed his fist.
Hailey shook her head and passed him a fry.
Christine wiped her mouth, "This is the first time I've been here in years."
"Really?" Hailey raised an eyebrow.
Christine nodded, "I think the last time I was here was when I met Jay for the first time."
Hailey's eyes widened, "Mom, that was like five years ago."
"Yeah, I don't come this way often," Christine shrugged.
"In five years?" Hailey repeated.
Christine nodded then rolled up her sleeves to take another bite of her sandwich.
Hailey automatically looked over her arms and was happy to not see any bruises.
"Have you talked to your brothers lately?" Christine asked.
Hailey rolled her eyes, "No."
"What?" Christine dropped her hands to the table, "Hailey Anne."
"They haven't reached out to me either, so I don't want to hear it," Hailey wiped Blake's face and tried getting him to sip his water.
Christine sighed, "Fine. I just wish you hadn't written us all off. It's been a year, Hailey, it's time for you to come home."
Hailey froze then slowly looked up at her, "Excuse me?"
"What your dad did to you in front of your son was awful and I understand your choice not to speak to him," Christine said, "But your brothers and I had nothing to do with that."
"You stood and watched," Hailey hissed, "You certainly didn't stop him. You could tell he was getting mad and he was making horrible accusations about Jay that he should have been saying about himself. And Alex and Evan have chosen his side. They never bothered to reach out and really listen to what I had to say."
"But now you're having a baby," Christine put her hand on Hailey's arm, "Don't you want her to have a godfather? I'm sure either of your brothers would love to step up and help raise her."
Hailey laughed in disbelief, "Mom, neither one of them is going to be her godfather. Jay and I don't go to church."
"You don't go to church?" Christine whispered, "Since when?"
"Since I was undercover for a year a super long time ago," Hailey crossed her arms.
Christine looked to Blake, "So he's not baptized?"
"No," Hailey shook her head, "And if he was, his godfather wouldn't be Alex or Evan. I am much closer to Jay's brother than either of them."
"The doctor, right?" Christine asked.
Hailey nodded, "He treated you after your car accident."
"Yes, yes," Christine nodded, "I remember that."
Hailey let out a long sigh then ran her hand through her hair.
Christine watched her then pursed her lips, "You really need to stop doing that, especially after that little girl's born and you experience post-partum hair loss."
Hailey groaned and sunk down in the booth.
Kevin walked around the body on the examination table, "So paramedics shows up to a possible suicide call."
Kim nodded, "Pronounces him dead."
"Call their fire department," Kevin continued.
"They spray down the blood," Kim stopped her pacing near the dead man's head.
"And he's taken here where Tom finds a bullet tore through each side of his head," Jay sighed.
"I'm confused on how this even happened," Kevin breathed, "Someone didn't do their job."
"You think?" Jay rubbed his face, "How're we supposed to fix this? We have no chance of DNA evidence at the scene. All we have is the absolute fact that a dead man who just committed suicide cannot shoot himself again on the other side of his head."
"Start with the girlfriend," Kim shrugged, "And go back from there."
Hailey buckled Blake into his car seat then straightened up to look at her mom, "Well, this was…nice."
Christine smiled and hugged her, "I'm so glad we could talk. It was so great to hear about your family."
Hailey lightly patted her mom's back, "I'm glad too."
"I actually got you something," Christine stepped back and put a finger up, "Just one second."
Hailey nodded and watched her hurry over to her car. She messed around in her backseat for a moment then turned with a pink gift bag in her hands.
"Okay," Christine breathed once she returned, "For my first grandchild."
Hailey blinked in disbelief and glanced behind her at Blake making faces at himself in the mirror connected to the back of the seat, "You're joking."
"No," Christine held the bag up, "I bought you something. I was hoping you'd tell me the gender, so I bought some gifts just in case. Come on, sweetheart, open it up."
"Mom," Hailey crossed her arms, "You have two grandchildren."
"Yes, but they're adopted," Christine said quietly, "You know what I mean. My first biological grandchild."
"You're ridiculous," Hailey closed the backdoor, "Don't bother calling me again. Ever."
"Hailey," Christine's face fell, "It's a gift."
"Drew and Blake mean everything to me," Hailey fought back tears, "And I thought you loved them too."
"Of course I do, Hailey-"
"No," Hailey shook her head, "Dad had made comments like that and you stood up to him them because you thought I'd never have a biological baby, isn't that right? You thought Blake and Drew were your only chances at having grandchildren so you stepped up to help, but now that I have a baby in me, your song changed real fast."
"Hailey, don't do this," Christine tried. She weakly held out the bag, "Just take it. It's a misunderstanding."
"It's disgusting," Hailey angrily grabbed the bag and opened it up to find a Tinkerbell outfit for the baby. She breathed shakily and stuffed it back in the bag.
"Isn't it cute?" Christine whispered.
Hailey wiped her face, "Bye, Mom."
Christine stepped back and watched Hailey get in her car to quickly drive away.
Jay walked in the house and just stood still once the door was shut. He closed his eyes and tried reveling in the quiet for just a minute after the mess of a day he'd had.
It didn't last long because soon enough there was the sound of a pot against the countertop and Drew said, "Oops."
Jay smirked and slipped his coat and shoes off, "Drew, buddy, what're you doing?"
"You're home!" Drew ran around the corner and smiled, "Hi, Sergeant Dad."
Jay laughed, "Hey, bud."
"Mom's changing Buzz's diaper, so I thought I could finish making the noodles for her," Drew said.
Jay raised an eyebrow, "What're you talking about?"
Drew sighed and led him to the kitchen. He pointed toward the box of noodles next to the big pot on the stove, "I need to finish that. We wanted to have dinner ready for when you came home."
"That's cool, but," Jay let out a breath and walked over to fill the pot with water then started the stove, "Mom and I don't want you using the stove on your own. It can be dangerous."
"Because of the fire?" Drew leaned against the counter.
"Mhmm," Jay opened the lid of the sauce, "Once Mom set my pajama pants on fire because of the stove."
Drew's eyes widened, "Are you serious?"
"Yeah," Jay chuckled, "So don't play with the stove."
"Oh, I promise I won't," Drew nodded.
Hailey came in carrying Blake and smiled, "Hey, look, it's Daddy. Daddy's home."
Blake giggled and reached out.
Jay grabbed him, "Hi, you." He kissed Blake's head then hugged Hailey, "Hey," he kissed her temple, "How was lunch with your mom?"
Hailey shook her head and sat down.
"Not good?" Jay guessed.
"Not at all," Hailey whispered.
Jay frowned, "I'm really sorry."
"What's not good?" Drew asked.
Hailey waved her hand, "Doesn't matter."
"But you're sad," Drew crossed his arms and furrowed his brow, "Please tell me."
"How about you set the table?" Hailey pointed toward the cabinet.
Drew groaned, "Mom."
"Set the table," Jay said. He placed Blake in his highchair before going back to the stove, "It's the right thing to do."
"Yeah, but," Drew stomped his foot, "Mom, what's wrong?"
"Sweetheart," Hailey straightened up, "Thank you for being concerned, but I-"
"I want to help," Drew clenched his fists, "I want to make you feel better."
Hailey smiled slightly, "Thank you, I appreciate that, but this is adult problems."
"Oh my god," Drew rolled his eyes.
"Drew Alexander," Jay turned to face him, "Look at me."
Drew rubbed his face then looked at Jay, "Yes?"
"Watch the attitude," Jay started, "You're going to walk to the cabinet and then you will set the table. Mom and I are happy that you want to help, we think it's really nice, but please trust us that if you needed to know, we'd tell you."
Drew squeezed his eyes shut then nodded with a soft groan, "Sorry."
"Drew," Hailey said softly once he started setting the table.
He looked at her and let out a long sigh, "Yes?"
"Did you want to make me feel better?" Hailey asked.
Jay glanced up from pulling the garlic bread from the oven.
Drew smiled, "Yeah."
Hailey put her hand out, "Can I have a hug?"
Drew relaxed and hurried over to hug her tightly.
"Thank you," Hailey whispered and held him close, "I needed a big hug from you today."
"Mama," Blake kicked his legs, "Mama!"
Hailey laughed and looked at him, "I've given you a lot of hugs today, baby boy, I'll give you more later."
"We all want Mommy hugs today," Jay winked at Drew and set the pot of sauce on the table.
"Because she's the best mom ever," Drew shrugged and sat down.
Hailey smiled and set a hand on her stomach, "Thank you."
"Did the baby move at all today?" Jay asked. He brought over the noodles and garlic bread then sat in his chair.
Hailey's face lit up, "She did. Still just little flutters. I haven't been able to feel her from the outside, so we still have to wait for that."
"Do you like it?" Drew sipped his milk.
"I do," Hailey nodded, "It reminds me that your sister's in there and that she's okay."
Drew smiled at her, "Good. I'm still trying to pick a name for her."
"Oh, really?" Jay chuckled.
Drew nodded and held his plate out, "It needs to be a good one. I thought Buzz was a good name too, though, and you didn't pick that one."
Blake stopped chewing on his noodle, "Doo."
"We picked Buzz," Hailey said, "It's just his nickname."
"I wanted it to be his real name," Drew mumbled and began eating once Jay had filled his plate.
"Well, it's close," Hailey said and started piling food on her plate, "Dad and I will definitely take whatever name you come up with into consideration."
Drew shook his head, but said nothing as he continued eating.
"How was day one of being a sergeant?" Hailey asked Jay with a smile.
He smirked a little, "A little crazy. It was kinda cool, though. I think everything's going to be okay in the end."
"Because you're the best too," Drew said, "Obviously."
"Yeah?" Jay chuckled.
Drew nodded, "You two are the best people ever. I told you, I'm lucky."
"We're lucky," Jay reached over to lightly nudge Drew's chin.
Drew smiled and swirled his food around on his plate, "Thanks."
Hailey hummed softly and spooned more food on Blake's tray grateful that the day was taking a much happier turn.
Jay was on his side next to Hailey on the bed and slowly rubbed circles on her back. while listening to her tell him about the lunch with her mom. He lightly scratched down her spine before kissing the back of her neck.
She sniffled and wiped her face with the pillowcase, "And she had to give me that damn dress. It's freaking cute too. It's like this green onesie with Tinkerbell on it and a little tutu."
Jay nodded along and wrapped his arms around her.
Hailey turned her head to look at him as best she could without completely flipping around, "Would you judge me if I told you I kept it?"
Jay shook his head, "Not at all."
Hailey closed her eyes against more tears, "You were right, though, I shouldn't have gone."
"Hey," Jay whispered and pushed himself up to kiss between her eyebrows, "You didn't know what was going to happen. I do think you would have regretted not going."
Hailey shrugged and wiped her face again.
Jay returned to rubbing his hands over her back, "What do you need from me?"
Hailey took a deep breath and relaxed back into the pillows, "Can you tell me about your day? How'd Sergeant Halstead do?"
Jay chuckled and held her close to his chest slipping his hand under her shirt to rest on her stomach, "Well, yesterday, some paramedics got a call for a potential suicide which is what they declared it as…until he was taken to Tom for his official autopsy and he found two entrance wounds, one on each side of his head."
Hailey's eyes widened, "Are you serious?"
"Mhmm," Jay hummed, "And since it was an assumed suicide-"
"They cleaned up," Hailey breathed, "Holy crap. So they called you?"
"Yeah, Tom paid a visit this morning," Jay nodded, "Kim, Kev, and I went over to check it out while Adam and Vanessa wrapped up that last case so we could focus on this one."
"Was he in a relationship?" Hailey asked.
"Yeah, girlfriend, well, actually, fiancé," Jay said.
"Think she's involved?" Hailey set her hands over Jay's.
He smirked slightly, "I have my suspicions."
Hailey turned in his arms, "Well, you're going to have to keep me in the loop on this one."
Jay laughed, "I can do that."
Hailey kissed him lightly, "I really am proud of you. You're going to do a great job."
"Thank you," Jay smiled.
"And I promise that when this baby's coming out of me in a few months," Hailey continued, "I won't kill you."
Jay laughed harder and hugged her tightly, "Awesome."
Hailey smiled up at him and kissed him again, "Here's to new beginnings."
"Cheers," Jay chuckled against her lips.
A/N: Hi again :) Thank you all so so much for the kindest words after last chapter. I'm going to try and make my way to everyone to personally thank you for reviewing, but just to everyone THANK YOU. Really. And to the guest who asked if Hailey's going to return to work…yes. She kind of mentioned it here in this chapter, but exactly when and how she'll return is something I'm keeping to myself. Hope you understand :) I know this wasn't the fluffiest of chapters (and I know some people may have wanted one since it's the last day of filming and from some online stuff), so I ask that you hold on for the next chapter – I think it could be a fun one :)
