I had walked ahead of the Doctor and Rose to catch up with Jack because one, The Doctor needed alone time with Rose mainly since he needed to talk to her to fall for her (well, more than usual because Ten and Rose were basically head over heels in love with each other- it would not be fun to be the third wheel, but that's something to worry about later) and two, I wanted to get to know Jack better and try to be his friend (although I mean, who wouldn't?).
"So, what's the deal with the creepy hospi- woah!" Jack stopped in his tracks as we entered the ward. "What's with the gas masks? Is it some form of primitive treatment in the twentieth century that I'm not familiar with?" He walked around from bed to bed, looking at each patient, and turned to me and Rose. "Because that would be arae, especially considering that I'm a genius." He threw his hands up and flashed us a huge grin.
I shrugged. "I don't know, I mean, I would call you a genius, except, well, I've met an actual genius." He frowned at me. "Let me guess. He was called Captain Jack Harkness."
I shook my head. "Nope, doesn't ring any bells." I shrugged. "Sorry, I guess."
He pouted at me and tilted his chin. "Come on, you and I both know that you're just saying this because your boyfriend is talking to Flag Girl in the corridor."
I walked toward him, my eyes and eyebrows raised. "One, he isn't my boyfriend, he's Rose's to be boyfriend, two, her name is Rose Tyler, not Flag Girl, and three, if you really were a genius, you would probably be scanning the patients. You know, the ones who look almost identical to the ones in the other wards."
He looked at me, pretending to have known what to do the whole time. "I knew that, I was just about to do the exact thing."
I laughed as he walked toward the bed that was closest to him. "Yeah, sure. Of course you did."
"Oi, what's happening here?"
I turned toward the door to see the Doctor and Rose standing at the doorway. The Doctor was glaring at Jack, and Rose was glaring at me. "Wow, identical much?" I muttered. Jack turned toward them and shrugged. "We were just talking."
"Talking about what?" The Doctor walked toward me as Jack shrugged again, scanning the patient. "Just some things. She's making me scan the patients."
"But I've already scanned them, why does he have to scan them again?"
I shrugged. "I dunno, that's what happened in the episode, and I really don't think he'd believe it if any of us told him."
"Alright then." He forced a grin and folded his hands, looking at Jack. I looked up at him, frowning. "You ok?"
"Of course I am! Why would you think otherwise?" His voice was falsely cheery, almost as if he was being sarcastic. Which he probably was. I mean, this was the incarnation that was the master- no, Doctor of sarcasm.
I looked away from him, still frowning, but I decided to drop the topic. We had bigger things to deal with at that moment. "This just isn't possible." I sighed in relief as Jack looked up from his scanning. "How did this happen?"
Well, the nanogenes happened, but I couldn't really say that, so I kept quiet as the Doctor asked, "What kind of Chula ship landed here?"
"What?" Jack turned around and looked at us.
"He said it was a warship." Rose said. The Doctor and I turned to look at her, and I raised my eyebrows when I saw how similar they both looked while interrogating Jack. "He stole it, parked it somewhere out there, somewhere where a bomb is gonna fall on it unless we make him an offer."
"What kind of warship?" The question was directed at me, not Jack. "What good would it do, asking her when I'm the one who's even selling you the warship in the first place?"
The Doctor ignored him and raised his eyebrows at me. "Technicalities, Doc. He says he's planning on selling us a warship-"
"But it's technically a warship because it's a ship that's used in war and not an actual warship!"
A grin made its way onto his face- a real one- and he turned to Jack, who was frowning at us. "I'm going to pretend I understood what you just said-"
"Don't, it just makes you look stupid." The Doctor walked toward Jack, "Anyway, what kind of ship was it?"
"I just told you, it was a warship." The Doctor turned towards me and I shook my head. "I can tell you what it really is, or I could let Jack come clean."
"Does it matter? It's got nothing to do with this!" Jack gestured to the patients.
"Do you know when this started happening?" I gestured to the beds. "A month ago, when a kid wandered into the bomb site nearby. And guess when your stupid ambulance landed here! Roughly a month ago on that exact spot!"
"Basically, it's got everything to do with this." The Doctor turned to me. "Ambulance?"
My eyes widened, "I actually said that?" Everyone in the room nodded with a different expression on their face- Jack was annoyed, Rose was confused, and the Doctor looked like he would either burst out laughing or punch Jack. I shook my head and muttered, "I had one job-"
Jack opened up a hologram on his watch thingy, showing us all a model of the ambulance that led us here. "This was what you were chasing through the Time Vortex. It's space junk. I wanted to kid you it was valuable. It's empty. I made sure of it. Nothing but a shell. I threw it at you. Saw your time travel vehicle, love the retro look, by the way, nice panels. Threw you the bait-"
"Although, would the TARDIS really be considered retro, given that we're twenty years before the police box she was modelled after was even invented?" I looked up at the Doctor, scrunching up my eyebrows.
"I dunno, I mean, it could be retro for him since he's from the future, but it wouldn't for a person from this time zone. Or I could be completely wrong and you could be right." He shrugged, "Could be taken any way."
"Will you two stop making goo-goo eyes at each other and let me finish what I was trying to say?"
I turned to look at Jack, frowning and mouthing, "Goo-goo eyes?" as he continued talking. "I wanted to sell it to you and then destroy it before you found out it was junk. It was a con, I was conning you."
"No shit," I muttered, and he scowled at me. "I'm a con man. I thought you were Time Agents. You're not, are you?"
"Finally, that 'genius' brain of his starts working," I muttered, as Rose said, "Nope. Just a couple more freelancers."
"Oh, should've known." He turned away and back to us again, scoffing. "The way you guys are blending in with the local colour. I mean, Flag Girl was bad enough, but U-Boat Captain?" I gripped onto the Doctor's arm to prevent myself from laughing at his expression as Jack turned to me. "And Omnipresent Eagle Enthusiast?"
"What the-" I looked down at my sweater and back at Jack. "It's called-"
"Anyway, whatever's happening here has got nothing to do with that ship!"
I sighed, putting my hands on my hips. "Didn't know that 'genius' is now synonymous to 'stupid'. Didn't I just tell you how everything that's happening here is related to the goddamn spaceship five minutes ago?"
Jack scowled again, "Love the sass, but does it really have to be directed at me?"
"What is happening here, Doctor?" Rose asked before things could escalate further.
"Human DNA is being rewritten. By an idiot."
"What does that mean?"
"I dunno, some kind of virus, converting human beings into these things. But why? What's the point?"
He looked at me, and I shrugged. "Maybe it was programmed to do something like this. Actually no, cut out the maybe. It was programmed to rewrite human DNA."
"But why? By whom?"
"Or by what?" The Doctor looked at me quizzically and I shrugged. "Sorry, that's all I can give you right now- saying more would basically mean giving up the whole plot to you. Although, just remember that sliding down a rope causes burns."
"What the hell does that have to do with what's happening here?" Jack looked up at me as he was bending over a patient.
"Everything."
"What do you mean-"
At that moment, he jumped back as the patient he was bending over sat up and started repeatedly saying 'Mummy' like all the other patients there. I jumped and almost fell down, but the Doctor caught my arm and pulled me close. I internally smacked my forehead. How could I forget this bit? It was what had stood out to me the first time I watched it!
"What's happening?" Rose asked, as she and Jack backed away from the patients, who were continually advancing towards us.
"I don't know."
"They sorta share a hive mind, and the hive leader, basically the first victim, has sent out some sort of a signal, I'm guessing." I said, backing away as well.
"Don't let them touch you."
"What happens if we touch them?"
"There was one kid at the bomb site. Now there's a whole bunch of patients a month later. What do you think will happen?"
"It spreads through touch?" Jack asked from wherever he was.
"Precisely."
