Luffy's POV
Luffy was perched next to Dragon's sleeping form, he was starting to get worried now. He hadn't woken up since this morning, Luffy didn't know much about sickness but he did know that a fever was bad. Dragon had one and it was really bad.
When the younger raven had come back the night before he hadn't known what to expect, but when he arrived Dragon had been deep asleep. So the boy had left him, he hadn't been sleeping very well anyway and sleep was good in his book.
Then he had woken up early in the morning, like around two or three am, Dragon was making some weird noises, so like the concerned friend he was, Luffy had climbed down from his hammock, checking to see if he was okay.
The man was sweating profusely, he was red like a tomato and he was heaving unsteadily. This time he was awake, he had his eyes fixed on his shaking hand, the shackles were digging into his skin.
Poor Dragon was in agony.
When Luffy had asked what was happening, the older raven had assured him that he was perfectly fine. Which the boy immediately denied, he had been about to go find someone, however Dragon stopped him.
He had somehow convinced the straw-hat captain that he just needed sleep and if he got somebody he would be angry at Luffy.
This brought them back to the present situation, with Dragon having not woken up and his fever was significantly worse. The bandage on his left arm had started to go a nasty black colour, the handcuff was crushing his wrist, speckles of blood was seeping from the wound.
At this point Luffy had been about to get up and find someone, so what if Dragon was angry with him, he didn't care. He was sick and in pain, being mad at him didn't even bother him. The boy had respected Dragon's wish, he had left him be, mostly because he was sad and upset, Luffy hadn't wanted to make it worse but now that really didn't matter.
Then there was a loud rapping on the door, it was different from the one's earlier, this one was a lot more firm and unhesitant. Luffy didn't even need to see who it was, he knew already, the large presence was unmistakable.
He better be sober now, he did not want to deal with that again. Especially with Dragon in his current state.
The person didn't wait for a answer, letting themselves in. Luffy didn't really care all that much, that was if he wasn't going to be annoying like last night.
Whitebeard peered around the frame, he had to duck his head so he didn't hit it.
"You're not drunk, right?" Luffy queried, he eyed the man suspiciously.
"Ah no... just a bit hungover."
"Good, you're annoying when your drunk."
The raven turned his attention back to Dragon, wondering if he should tell the Yonko, the older Monkey didn't really like him all that much.
"I just wanted to check on you boys"
The blonde man was still hanging back by the door, trying to give them some space. Luffy did appreciate that, particularly after his clingy drunken stupor.
"Dragon's sick."
Whitebeard seemed to take that as some kind of invitation to come in, he came over to stand by the bed where Luffy was sat.
"How long has he been like this?" The man sounded extremely concerned.
"Since last night, he was making weird noises and it woke me up. I was going to get someone, but Dragon said no. He's stubborn like that. He was upset so I left him alone, when I got up this morning he was worse, thought I'd wait until he woke up, but he hasn't..." Luffy explained.
The Yonko was nodding, his brows furrowed, a look of worry covered his face. He knelt down, reaching out to touch Dragon's forehead when he paused, turning to Luffy.
"Can I touch him?"
That got a confused head tilt from the young captain, he just nodded. He was so weird... why does he need permission?
Luffy left Whitebeard to do whatever, wandering over to other side of the dark room and lit the oil lamp, the warm glow spread over the cabin. He had been sat in the dark for what felt like an eternity, the boy had been reluctant to light the room as it might bother Dragon. Luffy knew he didn't like have bright lights when he woke up, so he presumed the other raven wouldn't either.
He plopped himself down next to Dragon once again, while the blonde man had his arms crossed, a pensive expression on his face, he had taken a seat on the floor next to the mattress.
The boy patted Dragon's hair absently, it was drenched in sweat, plastered to his skin, it made Luffy stiffen from the gross feeling.
Poor guy.
He must have been really sick, it took the straw-hat captain back to the time Nami had fallen ill, she had been very close to dying, if hadn't been for Choppers mentor, they may have lost their dear friend.
Maybe he could find another old hag who lived in a snowy castle, he would be more than happy to carry him up mountain if it helped.
Or there was the mean old lady on this ship, she had done doctor stuff when Dragon and Luffy first arrived. She would have to help.
"I think his wound is infected... that's maybe why he's ill, I can't be sure, I'm not a doctor."
Luffy looked from Dragon's feverish form, he was gasping for air, it made the teens guts wretch.
"Doctor! Right I'm going to go find that old lady that was mean to Marco and tell her to come and help Dragon!" He fixed his black eyes on the Yonko seriously, the raven stood up ready to leave, even though he wasn't exactly sure where the infirmary was, but he had set his mind to the task and he was going to find and drag the mean old lady here.
He darted off only to not go anywhere, the large man had grabbed hold of the back of his shirt and pulled back.
"Wait! Hang on before you run off-"
Luffy butted in he really didn't want to wait, he tried to brute force his way out of the mans hold, but all he ended up doing was running on the spot.
"What! I'm gonna go find that old lady why are you stopping me!"
Whitebeard sighed a long suffering breath, as he got up from the wooden floor.
"Do either of you ever listen...? If you had let me finish, I was going to say that I would go, get the doctor and you stay here with Dragon."
The raven who had half ignored what the man had said, paused his brain slowly processing that information.
"Why didn't you say that before 'not so old' guy?"
The man just rolled his eyes, making his way out, only turning to make sure that the boy had actually listened.
"Just stay there."
The younger captain bobbed his head, going to perch on the mattress next to Dragon's head, giving the other raven a little nudge so he could make himself more comfortable.
Whitebeard's POV
Newgate felt awful, what with his hangover, the half destroyed Moby, his worn out and stressed kids, on top of his rampage on the Wolf man pirates ship which ultimately killed the captain.
Though to be fair the dead captain wasn't weighing on him that much, rather that he had terrorized his kids and they ended up babysitting his very intoxicated ass, while had been throwing around earthquakes like confetti at a party.
It was horrifying to think that he could have quite easily hurt or even killed one of them.
All in all the Yonko's day wasn't going very well, he had caused so many problems, it was a nightmare.
His already awful day had just gotten just worse, when the two brothers hadn't been out of their room, he had found out that it was because Dragon was very ill.
He was the cause after all, he was the one had who had forced Dragon's break down. The Yonko wasn't entirely sure what it was that he had gone and said to trigger him so much. However it had been enough to actually make the normally very emotionless kid crack.
Newgate had gone over and over what the trigger was, yet he couldn't figure it out. He hadn't really said all that much to him.
There was only a couple of stand out things he had picked up on.
One, he'd tried and failed to joke around with him, which had resulted in a apology from Dragon, for some reason.
Two, he had noticed that Dragon was in pain, he kept flinching and fiddling with his shackles. Now thinking back on it was probably the beginnings of his current sickly state. Newgate had asked if he was in pain, even if it was obvious that kid was. That hadn't been received very well, it had brought on a lot of 'Why do you cares'.
That was frustrating, though he did understand where that question came from now. Damn that Garp... Maybe that was the trigger?
He didn't know his head was throbbing, Newgate was starting to feel nauseous again. It was early evening wouldn't his hangover be gone by now! It was wishful thinking...
But that wasn't the only mess he'd made with the Monkey brothers, Newgate had been told by Marco that he had gone and pissed off the much more laid-back brother when he was wasted.
The Yonko, somehow, for some God damn reason gone completely off the rails with Luffy. He had dragged the poor kid around, been a little over affectionate with him, told him to call him Pops multiple times, being very forceful over it and then gotten in to a childish squabble with him over fighting the Wolf man captain.
Honestly he was more surprised that they hadn't barricaded the door to the cabin or tried to jump ship, maybe if they could swim, the Moby didn't have any small easy accessible boats to steal, they were all kept below deck in the cargo hold.
Poor little bastards.
Newgate wouldn't even blame them if they never spoke to him again.
The Yonko was so deep in thought, so focused on his journey down to the infirmary, that he almost stepped on Marco, who had been trying and failing to get his attention.
He froze mid-step inches from accidentally stomping the boy, his son hadn't bothered to move out of the way. He really wished he didn't do things like that, just because he could heal himself, didn't mean he could just keep taking damage. Newgate did not want to be the reason he was hurt.
"Marco what are doing?"
"I was trying to talk to you, but you kept ignoring me, yoi!" Marco grumbled, he had his hands on his hips, looking particularly peeved.
"Oh, I was deep in thought... sorry."
The blonde man patted the teenager's head apologetically, all he got in return was a grumpy pout.
"Whitey said you'd gone to check on Luffy and Dragon, are they okay, yoi?"
Newgate sighed, debating if he should tell him or not, he didn't want to worry his son, however he had already told Marco what had happened with Dragon, so really there was no point in keeping it from him.
"Dragon is ill, I was on my way to get the old ba- I mean Marilyn."
"Pops everyone calls her old bag, yoi" Marco snorted in amusement.
Well that was true... the Yonko probably should set a good example. Ah, he didn't care enough, she was nasty old woman and her only redeeming quality was that she was an excellent doctor.
The blonde boy's smile died a little, he was most likely concerned about Dragon or at least how Luffy was taking it anyway. Newgate gave him a reassuring smile, lightly ruffling his hair with his knuckle.
"How about you come see them with me, I know Luffy needs cheering up, he's acting pretty out of character."
"I bet, he hadn't eaten today, that's already weird enough, yoi"
Newgate nodded in agreement, when he had seen Luffy this evening, the kid was uncharacteristically quiet, he seemed to lack the normal optimistic attitude and cheerful demeanour. The way he moved was lacking any energy, the boy was burnt out.
Newgate had learned more things about Luffy in the last day and half, then the almost 2 weeks since he arrived. He was surprisingly unpredictable despite his very straight forward personality; the man was never quite sure what the kid was thinking. All he thought about was food, if he was deprived of it, he would get very grouchy and angry, especially at the person that was the cause, according to Gloria he had made her life miserable when he was helping out in the store room. And finally, Luffy was blunt, so blunt in fact that when he had called Newgate annoying, he felt rather attacked, okay yes, he was annoying when he was drunk, but the kid could at the very least have said it without the irritated tone and accusing look.
"I think he may feel better if you go and see him, anything to get the kid back to some kind of normality. It was awful seeing him like that, I don't know him all that well, but the way he was so..."
Marco looked up at him, he had a pensive expression. "Maybe I should of just barged in anyway, I expect he was glad you went to check on them, he was probably worried about leaving Dragon alone, yoi"
"He wasn't overly pleased to see me, I'm in his bad books... not that I can really blame him." The Yonko's shoulders sagged, shaking his head without much hope.
"Aww Pops I'm sure he's just upset about Dragon, yoi"
Marco flew up to perch on his shoulder, giving his best attempt at a hug, which Newgate very much appreciated. He really needed one right now, though the proud man would never admit it out loud. It took a great deal of effort not to go completely mushy and shower Marco with lots of affection.
His son wasn't 7 anymore, he was 15 and he had to remember that going dad mode on his teenager son would make him extremely embarrassed and Marco may not give Newgate another hug again.
He missed the days where he could pick him up and smother him, there was a time, not even that long ago that he could get away with it. Then when he turned 13, suddenly he was to old and cool to be cuddled by his dad and it honestly upset Newgate more than he would ever admit.
The Yonko just hoped that when Jozu turned 13 he wouldn't do the same. It was nice to have a least one kid he could still be an overly affectionate and doting dad with.
Okay, that wasn't actually 100 percent true, Whitey was okay with it sometimes, though it had to be on her terms and if it wasn't she would get incredibly crabby about it. To be fair, annoying his daughter was one of his favourite pass times...
Am I a terrible father?
Shaking off that thought before he over analysed it, he continued on his mission.
"Come on, let's go get the old bat."
