Arendelle market square
The merchants were slowly restoring their businesses and with the help of the Queen, the trade to Corona and Duchy of Flam were once again opened. The demand for lutefisk increased since the ascension of the Vinter Queen, while they started to export wool to the Duchy of Flam and profit was a lot higher than when they were trading with the Valley. Different guilds already started to gather man power to meet the demands of the kingdom and other neighboring kingdoms, since their revival unemployment gradually decreased. It was slow but still much better than the two decades they endured. The Arendellian population was grateful for the Queen's efforts, though there were still the people who still saw her as an evil tyrant who brought war in their shores and not easily deceived by the superficial kindness she was showing. They had a feeling the Queen tried to bribe them by not paying taxes, it was so good to be true since who would pass up collecting taxes? No one, especially if they were royalty. They knew sooner or later the usurper's true colors would reveal itself.
It has been days since the royal progress had passed the market square, leaving the Coronan royals in charge of the kingdom's affairs. Many were apprehensive on the notion of foreigners were at the helm. Soon their uneasiness turned into fear as a group of uniformed Arendelle knights approached the different shops discreetly demanding to pay their taxes.
"In the name of Queen Elsa, First of her name. We're hereby tasked to collect the taxes due for the kingdom." one of the knights said.
"Her Majesty had given us two month allowance for us to recover. She wouldn't take back her word." said the shopkeeper.
"It was decreed yes but before she departed for the royal progress, she had rescinded her decree. Now you must pay what you owe to the crown. . ." the knight paused and signaled his men. "Or else." the knights drew their swords slightly, to threatened the now quivering man in front of them.
They knew the reputation of the Queen's knights, some were mercenaries turned into proper knights and their true nature as mercenaries would always be there despite wearing uniform. They won't hesitate to draw blood if necessary.
"O-Of course." the man swallowed the lump in his throat before retrieving small pouch filled with money.
"Good man." the knight grinned before exiting the shop. As the knights exited a shadow on the window disappeared.
The scenery started to changed around them, there were farm lands and houses along the way. They were informed they would arrived at Heather Town after days on the road. Heather Town was a quaint town rich with history and it was one of Arendelle's richest town, it was not a surprise since it was next to the Duchy of Eldr. During the reign of Runeard, most of the trade was redirected to this town since the lord governing the area was a vassal of the Dukes of Eldr. No one dared to question the usurper king's decision, not even the nobles who secretly opposed the tyrant could do anything about it. The moment the Duchy of Eldr got richer the emptier the royal coffers had become, but of course the private coffers of the Duchy depleted soon as the war started.
Anna got this information from the Count of Isles before she got on the carriage, to let her know something about the town. Though while the Count was telling her stories, his eyes couldn't stop looking at the sprig of purple hyacinths she was holding. He was obviously curious about where did the flowers came from or who gave it to her. He didn't ask but Anna felt he knew who they came from if the glint in his eyes has to come by.
She collected the very same flowers since that night when she and Elsa talked. The flowers she found next to her pillow was a sprig of purple hyacinths. She was quite surprised for finding flowers the moment she woke up. Anna looked around but she couldn't find the only possible person responsible for it. Wendy helped her dressed and while they were at it Anna asked her who left the flowers on her pillow.
"I am not sure, M'lady. Though they are beautiful."
Anna had to examine her lady-in-waiting if she was lying but she saw confusion on the latter's face. She sighed and dropped the subject immediately. She thought it was better to ask the person she had in mind directly, so she did.
"Elsa, you left these on my pillow?"
The Queen only gave her a small smile before leaving her to give instructions to her knights. Anna just stood there, stunned, at the silent admission of the platinum blonde haired woman. Her face was warm and she was sure her skin started to have reddish shade. She thought it was just one of Elsa's whims but she was wrong. The next morning she found another sprig of the same flower. The next day after that she found them again on the same spot on her pillow, then at present she was cradling the same type of flower inside the carriage. She had instructed Wendy to keep them in a secured box. Then she tried to coax Elsa for answers why she was receiving such flowers, the latter would act as if she didn't hear her and kept on diverting their conversations on other subject. It was clear Elsa wouldn't like to talk about it so Anna gave up. . . for now.
Inhaling the sweet scent of the flower made her feel warm feelings in chest, something she never felt before. Anna wouldn't admit loudly but the purple hyacinths were the first flower she received after two decades. The other person, whom she barely remembered, gave her flowers when she was a child was long gone, her father. Even as a princess she only received ostentatious gifts from nobles, no one ever thought that flowers would suffice. It must've been ludicrous to feel happy for receiving such simple flower from someone who just recently decided to be civil with her, regardless of the deal they made to fool the nobles.
A smile crept across her face while gazing at the purple hyacinths.
"Who would've thought that you are quite charming." Anna mumbled. Her teal eyes gazed outside the carriage window, hoping to see platinum blonde locks but she only saw Eric. She sighed and silently staring the empty seat across her. She doesn't know- well she did know but she doesn't understand why she had to be in the carriage when they were riding for days and was fine on horseback. The only explanation she got was.
"Her Majesty wouldn't want you to tire yourself even further." it was Eric who informed her.
"I am perfectly fine." she protested.
"I apologize M'lady, but Her Majesty insisted." with that Anna stormed off and went to find Elsa.
Fortunately, Elsa was on her way back from one of the tents, Marshall's probably. Anna intercepted her and took her arm before gently dragging her to their tent.
"I don't like to sit on the carriage all day. I can ride on horseback."
"No." Elsa immediately shot her down.
"Elsa! You can't expect me to sit alone all day on my own! You have to be there with me."
The only response she received was eyebrow raise from the Queen, then slowly a smirk found its way to on the Queen's lips. Anna was too late to realized what she said and healthy shades of red bloomed on her face.
"Ah I see now." the Queen's smirk widened.
"No! You got the wrong idea!" she was flustered.
"I don't know, you just said you want me there. Does that mean you like my company?" the Queen tucked some stray strawberry blonde hair behind her ear.
Anna took few steps back. "NO! You—uh – I am fine on my own!" she hurried towards the carriage but not before hearing the Queen's soft chuckles.
Anna covered her blushing face with her hands as she remembered that particular embarrassing encounter with Elsa. She was thankful she was alone or else she would see another smirk from the latter. She leaned her head back on the panel of the carriage and took deep breaths to calm herself. Anna wouldn't admit to anyone but she got used to Elsa's presence and found it oddly comforting. She felt safe with her around. She was sure something has changed between them, but she couldn't possibly be liking Elsa, could she? She bit her lower lip.
It was absurd. Maybe Anna only felt like this because Elsa kept her safe, no matter how odd her ways were. Also out of the people around her, it was a glaring fact, only Elsa whom she could rely on since Elsa holds the power. Yes, that's the reason. It was a snowball chance in hell she's liking Elsa in any way, because there's no way she would, despite the flowers she received.
"No. I shouldn't— and wouldn't." Anna closed her eyes and shook her head. She shouldn't dare.
Anna was sure Elsa wouldn't think of her that way. No, it was not possible. The wound was too deep and too painful for them to feeling anything for each other. What Elsa needed was someone who could keep the kingdom from falling apart. Over and over Elsa said it was for the sake of the people why she did what she had done, at first Anna thought it was only a ploy for her to agree but was proven wrong. Based on what she witnessed these past few days, she knew she had to help. She should stop her hesitance on the terms they agreed upon, she should stop being stubborn.
The people in Heather town couldn't believed their eyes when three riders bearing the new royal standard coming to the city to inform the town head, the mayor, of the arrival of the Queen. The town mayor was Eli LaBouff, a wealthy lord with a daughter named Charlotte. Lord LaBouff had received a letter a week before, stating the possibility of the Queen and her courtiers would lodge at his manor house so he was ready to receive the royal visit in his quaint town.
Lord LaBouff folded back the letter but it was immediately swiped off his hand by his excited daughter.
"Oh gods! The Queen and the Princess will stay in our house! I wonder what she looks like." Charlotte went to the balcony of her father's study and squinted her eyes to the town's square since it was visible from her vantage point. She turned to her father. "Papa, do you think I'll be invited to a royal ball or perhaps the royal wedding since it was rumored the Queen will wed the Duchess of Eldr."
"Charlotte!" Lord LaBouff hissed quietly as possible. "Watch your words. The Queen had stripped the former princess of her titles, she will not take kindly for hearing such treason. The Duchy is currently under the Queen's control, I am sure you witnessed those Coronan army passed through here during the war to stormed Eldr castle, you better behave or we might lose our heads."
"Of course Papa." Charlotte understood her father's fear since most of the vassals under the Duchy were all beheaded at the conclusion of the war. Since then her father was branded as a coward and traitor by those who once considered them as allies. No one knew how hard it was for her father to bow down to the victor in exchange for the lives of the people under their care.
"I heard she was fair and treated the people equally, though I have yet to see it for myself in order to believe." Lord LeBouff said.
"How should I address the former princess?" Charlotte asked.
"M'lady. Nothing else." Lord LaBouff said. "Have you checked the rooms where they would stay for the night?"
"Yes, I made absolutely sure they are perfect!" Charlotte's spirit was once again lifted, dismissing the previous thoughts she had in her mind.
"Good." Lord LaBouff chuckled.
Elsa's expression while riding on horseback was blank as always, though her mind couldn't stop certain moments that transpired these past few days. She should've expected Anna to ask if she was the one who gave that purple hyacinths one morning, she couldn't help but to feel embarrassed on what she did. However, she expected more reaction than a simple question. Never in her life she would imagine to give anyone that specific kind of flower, since it would only hurt her pride. Even so it made her feel a little better, as if she could finally breathe.
A small smile crept on her lips at the memory of a stunned and flustered Anna. She found the latter's quirks endearing. They way she stutter while sporting flushed cheeks. It was so far from the woman she met who only have hatred and contempt in her eyes whenever they meet. Of course Elsa wouldn't back down despite how attractive the former princess was. Elsa never wanted Anna to get mixed up with politics but what she didn't expect was a woman who was capable of fighting her in everyway she could, she knew then there was no hope but to proceed as planned.
"You seemed happy." a voice on her left said.
"Do I?" Elsa pursed her lips and gave the man a side glance.
"I heard Anna received flowers these days. I don't believe you are responsible for them."
Elsa's brow twitched in annoyance. "Your Grace, if so then why bother approaching me about them?"
"Oh come now, Your Majesty. You know I am only teasing." the Duke chuckled. "I'm glad you're in good terms." sincerity was evident in his tone.
"Let's just say it was mutually beneficial to us to stop getting to each other throats. It creates unnecessary drama." her tone was indifferent.
"Child, every member of the royal family of Arendelle are dramatic whether you like it or not. It's in your blood and besides life is a bore without it" the Duke laughed.
"Ah yes, Runeard's love for drama mixed with insanity and lust for the throne killed my family. Silly me, how could forget?" Elsa deadpanned.
"You and your dark humor." the Duke shook his head. "Elsa, I know you don't need my approval, but I'd still say I approve the way you are handling your relationship with her. I know I said this many times, this is the only way we could end things peacefully as long as there are people who have Eldr blood in running through their veins."
Elsa knew there was another way to solidify her claim but she didn't respond because she doesn't have it yet.
"She's a sweet girl and of course beautiful." the Duke continued.
The conversation the other night popped into Elsa's mind.
"If so then why she wasn't married yet at her age? I heard she doesn't have any marriage proposals until King Arkyn."
"Because she's yours, she has to be your wife no matter the consequences out there." the Duke firmly stated.
Elsa turned her head to the Duke with a sudden realization. "You. . . it was you."
The Duke fixed his spectacles on the bridge of his nose.
"Of course it was me. I manipulated Runeard for not marrying Anna off to nobles and even princes of other kingdoms. I did my best to produce incriminating information to every individual who would dare to want Anna's hand in marriage. Runeard would only choose the perfect spouse, not even a speck of dishonor, for his granddaughter despite he himself was a debauched human."
"Surely not all of them have something to hide." Elsa said.
"Yes that's for sure, so I made some for them. Being that monster's advisor gave me enough room to do all that." the Duke grinned. "I made sure for you to have her hand and now I want to make sure she stays in your bed." the firm tone returned. "You wouldn't want to waste this old man's efforts, would you?" he chuckled.
Elsa turned her attention ahead and didn't answer.
Arendelle Castle.
Rapunzel was pacing in her room after reading a small note from one her dreamers had sent. She was sure Elsa would find a solution for this sudden display of power of Northul. It was stated on the note of how the Northulian army bolstered their numbers at the border. Arendelle was not yet ready for another war, the kingdom was still half buried from the economic and military collapse by the previous ruler and on top of that was their invasion to reconquer the kingdom. Sure her cousin have the borrowed troops from Corona but Arendelle wouldn't be able to withstand its after effects. The reluctant nobles would possibly see this as Elsa's fault for causing such rift between Arendelle and Northul, and of course it would be an opportunity for the other bastards who wanted Arendelle for themselves. It would look like her cousin's efforts to revive the kingdom were all for naught.
She re-read her cousin's letter.
" Dearest Cousin,
I hope everything is going well there despite many hurdles. As for the royal progress. . . I'll say it's far from what I expected. We were attacked by villagers before welcoming us and encountered another poor village on our way. I write to you while we are currently resting in the middle of nowhere and headed to Heather town.
I have been following your advise and it's fruitful, the golden crocus' defenses had been lowered and it's only a matter of time before whether or not I would take that as an opportunity to go straight to the jugular. I have a lot of things to tell, disturbing things, however I would to discuss them personally not writing them down like this for it would be dangerous to do so. What you can do right know is to have one of the dreamers fly to the northern border and assess the situation yourself.
One more thing, the other page of my letter contains the things needed for the Forest Village, the one we encountered the first time, they would be needing tools and such and please make sure they are permitted entry to the capital for trade and commerce, the person who delivered my letter will be a great help for more information regarding the village. Also if there's a person named Philip Hubert, grandson of Master John Olsen, I left him a letter of recommendation to join my elite knights. If he would take his wife to the capital with him, his wife's name is Aurora of House Costa, kindly give them a room there in the castle. Aurora will be one of Anna's lady-in-waiting, I'll leave the necessary arrangements to you on that matter.
Please take care on my absence, I would very much like to go back soon and handle some pressing matters there. Send my regards to Uncle and thank him for his long patience for dealing such headaches in my place. I miss you both.
Sincerely,
Elsa Vinter R."
She had told her father about this and made plans with General Maximus, she was relieved Elsa had recalled him after securing Eldr Castle. She has to do something to de-escalate things. The Northulian royals doesn't really take rejection lightly.
A certain patterns of knocks on the door had pulled her from her thoughts.
"Come in."
Her personal guard was carrying series of notes and gave them to her.
She read each notes and as she did so, her anger rose.
"Bastards!" she plunged her knife on the vanity table in anger. This was the least she needed at the moment. "Taking advantage of the Queen's absence and extorting money from the citizens in the name of the Queen." Rapunzel glared to no one particular. "Do we have evidence?"
"We are gathering them as we speak." Vlad responded.
"Good. I'll make sure they will suffer from it." she quickly took a parchment and wrote a letter for her cousin before sealing it with her crest. "Take this and make sure it will reach my cousin as soon as possible." she handed the sealed letter to her personal guard.
"At once, Your Highness."
Rapunzel could only sigh in exasperation.
The royal progress was warmly welcomed by the people of Heather Town, the Queen was forced to get on the carriage before they entered the town's gates. It would be odd for the Queen on horseback while Anna was inside the carriage alone. They waved through the window of the carriage.
"They are lively and I haven't received any jeering from the crowd about my heritage for once." Anna said while smiling to the people outside.
"Of course you wouldn't, this town was under your family's authority, I might be the one they are cursing under their breaths as we speak" Elsa's humorless chuckles reached her ears.
"What made you say that?"
"Anna, it's common sense. I took everything from you, of course these people will feel resentful towards me."
"We'll never know." Anna shrugged.
"LONG LIVE THE QUEEN! LONG LIVE PRINCESS ANNA."
Both of them were surprised at those words. They stared at each other for a moment, then a massive smile broke into Anna's face.
"I think you have to tone down your negativity." Anna grinned.
The Queen gave her a questioning stare before stating. "So they say you are still a princess. I wonder who's whispering in their ears to say such thing. Even in the capital, they dared to address you as such. I understand the people in the secluded villages but a town like this, whom the town head knew what would be the consequence of such insolence." there was a glint in those glacial eyes Anna couldn't decipher.
Anna's smile vanished. "Will you punish them?"
The Queen sighed. "No. . ." she trailed off. "I guess Arendellians are stubborn people." she shook her head.
"You are Arendellian too you know." Anna carefully stated.
Elsa snickered. "Is that a way of you telling me I am stubborn?"
"I didn't say that." Anna responded innocently as possible but the faint smile on her face was betraying her act.
The platinum blonde squinted her eyes at her. She looked away while biting her lip to prevent herself from smiling.
"Go on laugh, it's not like I'll throw you into the dungeon for it. Well technically I can but I just chose not to, to avoid any complaints from the people who loves to protect you so much." Elsa grumbled.
Anna didn't know she would have an opportunity to see this side of Elsa.
"I am not laughing!" Anna protested, but her face was bright with a hint of a smile.
The Queen gave her an unamused stare. "Never mind." she paused and looked to the crowd. "Anna listen to me."
Anna gave her full attention to the latter. "What is it?"
"I had this carriage made specifically for the both of us." Elsa kicked the polished wooden panel under her seat using the heel of her boot forcefully. The panel opened and revealed two swords and two daggers.
Her teal eyes were widened at the sight of the weapons.
"There are weapons here you can use. Open yours under your seat." Elsa ordered her.
Anna copied what Elsa did and kicked the heel of her boot against the wooden panel. Hers revealed two bows and two quiver of arrows.
"Elsa?" she gave the platinum blonde haired woman a questioning gaze.
"I know I gave you a dagger for your safety but it would not be enough, it's a safety pre-caution in case we were ambushed by bandits or . . . some powerful people. We can never be sure." for a moment, Elsa's face was filled with sorrow and her hands were balled into fist on her lap.
The latter used her foot again to return the panel back to its place with a soft click on the latch inside and Anna did the same on hers. She observed how the scowl on Elsa's face became prominent. It wasn't the usual scowl she saw before, as if Elsa was in anguish?
Without much thought, she reached for Elsa's clenched hands and asked.
"Are you alright?" Anna was genuinely concern.
"Of course." Elsa's tone was quite subdued.
Anna brushed Elsa's knuckles using the soft pad of her thumb but Elsa abruptly pulled away from her touch. She did her best not to wince, she retracted her hands but Elsa held them back gently as possible.
"I'm sorry, I am just not used to this kind of thing." Elsa admitted.
"It's alright." Anna smiled and her effort was rewarded by a small smile from the latter.
The carriage stopped, startling both of them and pulled their hands away immediately. Anna shyly looked down the carriage floor as Elsa stood up and got out of the carriage.
She bit her lower lip while trying to even out her breathing, to calm herself.
"Anna?"
She snapped her attention toward the open carriage door and saw Elsa holding out her hand for her.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you wait." she reached for Elsa's hand and proceeded to climbed down the carriage.
"It's fine."
Anna looked ahead and smiled to the people waiting for them on the manor house' foyer. There she saw a bear like man, sporting golden brown hair and a mustache and was dressed in his military regalia. Beside him was a blonde lady dressed in frilly pink dress, probably his daughter.
Anna was thankful that she wore her green travelling dress, while Elsa wore her military uniform with the help of Wendy, the mudstained uniform was once again free from dirt. She glanced at Elsa's arm and automatically looped her own around it. They proceeded to walked the path and as they go, the lined up servants on the sidelines bowed and curtsied and greeted them.
"Your Majesty. Lady Eldr." Lord LaBouff and his daughter bowed to Elsa and bowed slightly to Anna. "You are most welcome to Manor Stella. It is an honor to be chosen to serve our most gracious and kind Queen." he jovially smiled to them.
Elsa only nodded in acknowledgment.
"May I present my daughter. Lady Charlotte's of House LaBouff."
"It's a pleasure." Elsa responded.
"Pleasure is all mine, Your Majesty and M'lady." Lady Charlotte gave her a warm yet excited smile.
"Come, let's go inside." Lord LaBouff led them inside the manor house.
Outside Heather Town at dusk.
A lone hooded rider just about to reached the town's entry way, the town was unusually bustling with people. The rider looked for an inn but unfortunately it was full, the owner had to turn the rider away with words of apology. The rider then looked for a tavern and hoping they have a room.
On the way to the tavern, there were drunken men littered at the pavement, singing merrily. The rider tried to ignore their calls and went straight inside the establishment after securing her horse on the small stable. Nausea hit the rider no thanks to the reeking smell of alcohol and sweat.
Proceeding to the counter and asked for a room, thankfully there was one available. After handing few pieces of silver, the hooded rider went up the stairs after getting the key. Once hidden, the hooded cloak was immediately discarded, it revealed luscious long red tresses.
She looked around, the room was cramped compared to the room she had back in Lille Manor but it was much better than the cold wilderness where she spent the few nights of her travel. She sat on the small bed and try to formulate her plans for the next few days before she ran out of money to use. Ariel only managed to get food from the manor for few days but didn't have the time to get any more valuables other than the ruby necklace and earrings she was wearing the day she ran away. Those jewelries had helped her enormously, she had them pawned in exchange for nice pouch of silver coins.
A rumble on her stomach reached her ears. She sighed and went to search her satchel but it was empty saved for the pouch of silver. Ariel was forced to don her cloak again and went downstairs to buy herself some meal.
The moment she got on the first floor of the tavern, the nauseating scent once again invaded her senses and the tavern was a lot noisier since more patrons went in for a drink.
She sat on a lone chair by the counter and asked the barmaid for a bowl of soup and bread.
The barmaid has dark skin and lovely raven hair. She was beautiful for a barmaid, Ariel thought.
"Here you go." the barmaid served her the food she ordered.
"Thank you." Ariel kept her hood up as she ate.
While she ate, she tried to tune out the noise and it worked, that's why she was quite startled when she heard a masculine voice next to her. The man was talking to the barmaid and got himself a tankard of ale.
Ariel had finished her meal and paid for it but as she turned she heard the door slammed opened and a group of men went in. Her heart sank as she recognized one of the men. They were Gaston's men.
She started to panic, she tripped on the chair but was saved by the man beside her preventing her fall but her hood was pulled down. Ariel was startled by the man's gorgeous blue eyes then turned her attention to commotion in the tavern caused by Gaston's men.
"Hey watch it!" one of the drunk patron exclaimed when Gaston's men carelessly bumped into him.
"You watch it old man." the thug growled and drew his sword.
Everyone in the tavern went silent at the sight of the sword. Some of the patrons cautiously placed their hands on the grip of their swords in case of a scuffle.
"Scram." the thug commanded before using his booming voice to get everyone's attention. "We're looking for a lady name Ariel of House Rey, she has long red hair and blue eyes. Anyone who will tell us her whereabouts you will be rewarded fifty gold."
The blue eyed man immediately pulled her hood up, realizing she was the one the men were looking for.
"Do you know them?" asked the man and discreetly shielded her with his body.
"Yes. My mother wanted to sell me to their master. I had to go. Please let me go." Ariel's eyes brimmed with tears. No she shouldn't be caught, not now.
"Okay, but you have to follow me." they carefully sneaked to the poorly lit part of the tavern.
"Why are you helping me?" Ariel asked.
"Do I need a reason to help you?" the man asked her in return. "Come follow me." they managed to the get into the tavern's kitchen and opened the back door.
"I have a horse in the stable." Ariel said.
"Stay here, I'll get it for you." the man ran towards the stable while she was crouching down near the bushes.
Ariel waited but was startled by the commotion inside the tavern. The sound of table banging against the walls, breaking of plates and the sharp sound of swords against each other.
The man arrived with her horse. Ariel immediately got on and before riding out she turned to the man.
"Thank you for your help Sir. . ."
"Max. Just Max."
"Max." Ariel smiled. "I''ll never forget your kindness Max. I hope I'll be able to return the favor when the time comes."
"No need to. Please go. I'll make sure they won't be able to follow you." the man, Max, said.
"Thank you, I owe you my life." Ariel pulled the reins of her horse. "Until then." she kicked the sides of her horse and galloped ahead.
"Until then, Ariel." Max smiled.
Moments later, Arendellian knights found him at the back door.
"Sir Eric, the armed men are apprehended and Lieutenant Olaf had asked your presence to Manor Stella."
"Very well." Eric said but his eyes were on the path where the beautiful redhead went.
