Morgan hadn't left Spencer's side once. He fell asleep in the uncomfortable chair with his head rested on the bed next to Spencer's legs. He slept holding the little boy's hand in his own, to comfort himself as much as the child.
He was woken up by the sound of loud heels clacking on the floor. Garcia had brought him the book that he had asked for. She also seemed to buy out the entire hospital gift shop. Spencer's room was full of flowers, balloons, and other colorful decorations.
The doctor came in soon after Garcia and checked over Spencer's injuries. He paid special attention to the boy's lungs, and happily informed Morgan that they were healing very well. He took the tube out of the boy's throat so he could breathe for himself. His breaths were raspy, but the doctor believed he was breathing well enough to do it unassisted. Before the doctor left, he told Morgan that Spencer would hopefully be waking up soon. Morgan thanked him before he took his leave.
When Morgan was once again alone with Spencer, he sat back and opened up the book Garcia had brought him. He read out loud to the little boy for hours. During this time, Spencer barely moved at all. His only motion was the subtle rise and fall of his chest. Morgan took solace in this small sign that his son was still alive.
As the day went on, his team member's would stop in. It was always one at a time, supporting him in different ways.
Garcia had not only brightened up the hospital room, but also his spirits. She playfully flirted with him, bringing him comfort as well as a small smile to his lips.
Prentiss had brought him coffee and sat with him in silence. She gave him strength by just being there, no words had to be spoken.
JJ had come and given him a long hug. She talked about good moments that Morgan had had with Spencer. She reminded him to think of the good times they shared, telling him that they would make more in the near future.
Rossi had brought him a homemade italian dish that Morgan didn't even want to try to pronounce. He joked with Morgan, but he also gave him wise advice. He told him to stay positive, that it would all work out.
Hotch was the team member that had surprised him. He had brought Spencer's teddy bear with him and tucked it under the boy's arm. He sat on the other side of the bed, looking down at the boy with sadness in his eyes. Before leaving, he gave Morgan a clap on the shoulder and a supportive nod that spoke for him.
Near the end of the day, Morgan once again found himself drifting off to sleep. As his eyes slipped shut, he heard a soft whimper from the bed. He immediately shot up and looked to see if Spencer was waking up.
The boy's face was scrunched up and he let out pained noises. Suddenly, the child jolted in the bed. He then murmured something that Morgan couldn't make out. After he jolted again, the older man leaned in to listen to what he mumbled.
"...f-forty two..."
Morgan scrunched up his brow in confusion, but ignored it when the boy jolted once more, this time letting out a pained yelp.
Morgan squeezed the child's hand. "Shhh… It's okay Spencer. You're okay..."
Without warning, the boy ripped his hand out of the agent's and brought it up to his neck. He drew in a strangled gasp and then let out a pained whimper that broke Morgan's heart. A single tear escaped his closed eyes and ran down his face.
Morgan lifted one hand to the boy's head, affectionately wiping away the tear with his thumb. He took his other hand and placed it gently on the boy's hand on his neck. He carefully took it off his neck and brought it to his mouth, kissing it lightly.
He petted the boy's hair as he whispered to him. "I'm here, baby. It's okay. You're okay. I love you and I'm not going anywhere..."
Slowly, the boy began to calm down. His face relaxed and his breathing evened out. Morgan continued petting his hair until he joined the boy in sleep.
