"So, Silas is appearing as Professor Shane. Wouldn't be my first choice."
Damon was on the phone with Stefan while they looked through the files in Will's office. Elowen shrugged.
"I dunno. It makes sense. He was someone Bonnie trusted."
"Elowen's right," Stefan's voice rang out through the line. "He needed to brainwash Bonnie into committing a massacre."
Damon paused. "You need us to come home?"
"No, we got it. How's the cure search going?"
"Eh, not great. I mean, it's no massacre in the making, but Rebekah trailed us here. Then, in addition to my buddy being a brilliant identity thief, he's also a hoarder."
"What are you trying to find?"
"Will had a repeat customer. 5'7 brunette. Said she was a runner."
"Katherine."
"Turns out I was helping her run from me. Ironic. Problem is, I'm pretty sure that this filing system goes by birthdate, but I can't for the life of me remember Katherine's."
"June 5th, 1473."
"And that, brother, is why you are the better boyfriend."
"Do you even know my birthday?" Elowen asked as she moved onto a different box to find the right file.
Damon made a face. "Is that even a question?"
"What is it, then?"
"May 10th, 1992," Stefan answered before Damon could.
Elowen smiled. "Damon's right. You are the better boyfriend."
"Oh, come on!" Damon protested. "I totally knew that!"
"Uh-huh. Sure you did."
"Well, what's my birthday?"
"June 18th, 1839," Elowen replied without missing a beat. "You're a Gemini, which explains a lot."
"And Stef-"
"November 1st, 1846. Scorpio. I like Scorpios. No wonder I fell in love with Stefan first."
"And you being an Aries-"
"Taurus," Stefan and Elowen corrected at the same time.
"Whatever."
"Ah-ha!" Elowen pulled a file out of the box she was looking through. "Found it."
Damon walked over and took the folder out of her hands. He opened it. "Well, will you look at that? It's all her former addresses, including a couple from the last two months. They're mostly P.O boxes, but hey, it narrows down the search."
"So, you headed back now?" Stefan asked.
"Yeah, tomorrow morning," Damon replied. "Gotta keep up the ruse for the terrible twosome outside, pretend like I'm having a good time."
Elowen quickly jumped up, grabbed Damon's phone and ended the call. Damon frowned.
"What are you-"
"Be quiet. Take your jacket off."
Elowen quickly took her shirt off and tossed it aside.
"Okay, whoa, if you wanted sex, all you had to do was-"
"Jacket! Now!"
"Okay, okay."
The second his jacket was off, Elowen grabbed the back of Damon's neck and crashed their lips together. Damon's hands landed on her waist just as the door to the office opened.
"Ugh."
Damon and Elowen pulled apart and looked over at the door to find Elena standing there. Damon suddenly understood why Elowen was in such a rush. They needed a cover story as to why they slipped away. Elowen made a face when she saw Elena.
"Can't you take a hint?" She asked as she bent over and picked her shirt up in annoyance. She slipped it over her head and then snatched Damon's jacket up. Pressing it against his chest, she walked towards the door and past Elena.
Elena watched her leave and then looked back at Damon. She crossed her arms as he shrugged his jacket back on.
"Nice way to ruin the party," he told her as he followed after Elowen, leaving Elena on her own.
Damon caught up to Elowen and put his arm around her shoulder.
"I think it's time I finished my story about Lexi being a nuisance in the 70s."
"Lexi's not a nuisance."
"You knew her for all of five minutes."
"And in the five minutes I knew her, she certainly fared better than you did at the time."
"Yet, you still fell in love with me. What's that say about you?"
"I have a thing for men with dark hair and pretty eyes."
"You always did say blondes aren't your thing. Wasn't that mystery girlfriend of yours a blonde?"
"She was, but if you're fishing for details on her, save your breath."
"Tch. Fine. Let's just get back to the party."
xxxx
"Are you sure we're going the right way?" Veronica asked. "We've been walking forever."
"You really don't need to be here, you know," Toby replied. "You can just turn back and go home."
"And miss all the fun? Also, hey, what's with the tension between Josiah, Caroline and Klaus?"
"Klaus has a thing for Caroline."
"Ohh. I get it. Josiah's jealous and Klaus doesn't know how to take a hint. Caroline's just caught in the middle. Why doesn't she pull an Elowen and have them both?"
"Ha! Yeah, right, like Josiah and Klaus would be okay with that."
"Are you saying Caroline wouldn't have a problem with it?"
"That's not what I said at all."
"Sh," Stefan shushed from in front of them. They were getting close to the location where Bonnie was. There were torches lit in a circle and the witch's chanting was getting louder. In the middle, a witch had her hands on either side of Bonnie's head, who was screaming in pain. Stefan quickly sped into the circle.
"Stop! It's not what you think."
The witch holding Bonnie looked up. "This is no place for a vampire."
"She's working for Silas."
"Silas?"
"He brainwashed her to kill you."
As Bonnie whimpered on the ground, the witch holding her pulled out a dagger. Stefan stepped forward in alarm.
"Wait. What are you doing?"
"If Silas has her, she's lost. We can't save her."
"Wait!"
Stefan moved towards them, but the witch flung her arm out at him and cast a spell. Stefan grabbed his head in pain and staggered backwards, falling to his knees.
"I have the power of 12 witches. You don't stand a chance!"
Stefan sped out of the circle and backed into a tree, groaning in pain. Toby and Veronica rushed forward to check on him as Klaus, Caroline and Josiah ran up behind them.
"They're linked," Toby explained. "Bonnie's gonna kill them."
"Not if the witches kill her first." Klaus grabbed Stefan and slammed him against the tree he was leaning against.
"Klaus, we need to save her!" Caroline said in desperation.
"How? The only way to stop the witches is to kill them, and then Silas gets what he wants."
"Spirits, take her soul!" The witch chanted from within the circle. "Free her from darkness."
She held the dagger over Bonnie and, thinking fast, Toby sped over and snapped her neck.
"No!" Klaus shouted, letting go of Stefan. Slowly, the other witches forming the circle began to drop dead and the flames from the torches died out. It took Toby a second to remember why he did what he did. He dropped down to his knees and gently shook Bonnie as Caroline approached them.
"Bonnie? Bonnie!"
Bonnie opened her eyes. They were a milky white color instead of her usual brown. She smiled eerily.
"The triangle is complete."

"You and Lexi?" Elowen asked in surprise. Damon had just finished telling her that him and Lexi slept together during their time in the 70s, and saying that Elowen was shocked was an understatement.
"Here? On the bar?"
"On the bar, on the stage, on the roof. It was a very long night."
"Huh. Didn't think Lexi was dumb enough to fall for someone like you."
"Well, you fell for someone like me."
"Which was completely accidental."
"Isn't falling for people always accidental?"
"Falling for Stefan wasn't an accident. Or Liv."
"I'd usually be offended if you didn't mention the mystery girlfriend. That's one of the first things I've ever heard you say about her. Seriously, why don't you ever talk about her? Your mom said it's because you said she doesn't count."
"Because she doesn't. We were together for like… three months, tops."
"Come on, there's gotta be more to it than that."
Elowen sighed. She got up from the bar and started walking away.
"Where are you going?"
Elowen turned around and walked backwards. "To the roof. It's too loud in here to delve into deep, dark secrets."
Damon smirked and got up to follow her.
"It's beautiful up here," Elowen said once they made it onto the roof. "I'm not even thinking about the fact that I hate heights."
She walked over to the ledge and leaned against it. Damon came up behind her and planted his hands on her hips. He leaned down and kissed her neck.
"So, Liv."
Elowen sighed. "Liv."
"What's the story?"
"I met Olivia in freshman year. She was in the grade above me. She had a twin brother. His name was Luke. He was kind of Josiah's only friend during our last few months in Atlanta. He became like his mentor, sort of, helped him through some stuff. Got him sober."
"I thought Josiah got sober after you moved to Mystic Falls?"
"No, but moving to Mystic Falls is what kept him sober." Elowen sighed. "Liv and Luke were witches. Apparently, they were originally from Portland, Oregon, not Maine, but something heavy had gone down in her family when she was a kid that caused their parents to send them to Atlanta. They lived with a family friend."
"What happened?"
"I don't know. She never told me. So, the story goes, I met her in drama club, one of the many things I joined so I could stay away from home. We were putting on Arsenic and Old Lace. She got the part of Elaine, while I was put in hair and makeup. Mind you, I knew a lot of people at my high school because I was apart of so many clubs as well as marching band, but none of them I would consider close friends. Toby had moved away the summer before freshman year, so my friends department was severely lacking. Liv and I clicked instantly, and once we found out we were both witches, we bonded very closely. I think I fell first. This was the first time I had really, really liked someone, and I'm pretty sure I made a fool of myself more than once. In the end, she was the one who asked me out because I didn't have the courage. I was really soft spoken back then. I don't know how she dealt with me."
"It sounds to me like she definitely counted. What aren't you telling me?"
Elowen chewed on her bottom lip. "... I didn't just like her. I'm pretty sure I was falling in love with her."
Damon furrowed his eyebrows. "I thought Stefan was your first love?"
"He was, don't get me wrong, but god… I was… enamored with her. I loved everything about her, from her laugh to the way her nose crinkled when she was confused about something." Elowen turned around to face Damon. "I say our relationship doesn't count so I don't have to think about the fact that she was the one that got away."
"I don't get it. Why didn't you just try long distance or something?"
"I was 15. How well do you think a 15 year old can maintain a long distance relationship? Besides, we mutually decided to end it after I moved."
"Then, how come you didn't just stay in contact?"
"That was my fault. I broke my phone during our move to Mystic Falls and I had to get a new one. My number changed and I lost all my contacts. I kind of feel bad. She probably thinks I just ignored her until she went away." Elowen sighed. "I told my story. What's the deal with you and Lexi? That obviously didn't work out."
Damon laughed. "Yeah, well-"
Damon and Lexi were asleep on the rooftop. The sun had started to rise and when it came over the horizon, it burned Lexi's skin. It woke her up and she quickly sped out of Damon's arms and seeked refuge in the shaded doorway. She tried to open the door, but it was locked and wouldn't budge.
"Good luck."
Lexi looked over at Damon, who was sitting up on the mattress.
"Spent all night reinforcing it. It was tough." He got up and approached Lexi. "Had to be really quiet not to wake you up."
Lexi laughed nervously. "What is this?"
"Payment."
"For what?"
"Oh, for the last six months of my life. For the nagging, for the self righteous platitudes. I'm paying you back for six months of you."
"Your humanity isn't back on, is it?" Lexi asked as realization dawned on her and dread filled the pit of her stomach.
"Never was."
"So, this was all just-"
"A joke! A big, fat lie." Damon smiled. "Best part of it is, you believed it. You thought I was like Stefan, a wounded little bird that you could nurse back to health."
Damon reached forward and brushed his hand against Lexi's cheek. She grabbed his hand forcefully and ripped it away from her face.
"But, he's a victim. I choose to be this way."
Damon pulled Lexi's hand into the sunlight. Her hand burned and she screamed in pain. She pulled it back into the shade.
"Enjoy the day. I hear it's gonna be a scorcher."
Damon smirked at her and then sped out of sight. Lexi slammed her fist against the door angrily, trapped.
Elowen gaped at Damon. "You did not leave her to fend for herself in the daylight for 24 full hours."
"No, I totally did."
"Damon!"
"What? I had my humanity off. What else were you expecting?"
Elowen shook her head. "This is just like when you first came to town claiming the switch was flipped. Your obsession over getting Katherine out of the tomb was clearly an emotion within itself, as was your love for her. In order to pull this off, you spent six months trying to get Lexi to fall in love with you just so that you could hurt her. You were spiteful, malicious and borderline evil. Those sound like emotions to me."
Damon shrugged. "Maybe they were. Maybe hatred was the first one I got back."
Elowen sighed. "Is it bad that I don't want the cure for Elena? I mean… yeah, there's only one dose, I get that, but…"
Damon nodded in understanding. "Stefan."
"Stefan."
"You two always did have a connection I could never touch. If either one of us ever deserved a human life with you, it was him."
"Yeah, but…"
Elowen wasn't able to finish her sentence. Rebekah sped up behind Damon and snapped his neck while Elena came up behind Elowen and wrapped her arm around her throat. Elowen struggled around for a moment before she lost consciousness. Even after she went limp in Elena's arms, she kept her tight grip around her neck.
"Hey, let up, she's out," Rebekah said. Elena didn't let go. "Stop it. You're going to kill her."
Still, Elena didn't stop.
"Stop!"
Rebekah went over to Elena and ripped Elowen from her arms.
"Are you insane?"
Elena rolled her eyes. "What? It's not like she would've been missed."
"On the contrary, Elena. She would've been missed by dozens and then you'd have half of Mystic Falls on your ass. Hatred is an emotion, you know."
"Please, I don't hate her. She's not worth it."
"Then why'd you just try to kill her?"
Elena didn't say anything. Instead, she bent over and plucked up the paper that was sticking out of Damon's back pocket. She wiggled it in her fingers.
"Bingo. Shall we?"
Elena walked off. Rebekah watched her go and after a moment's hesitation, followed after her.
xxxx
It was morning by the time Elowen and Damon woke up. Actually, Damon woke up first with a groan, looked over and saw Elowen out cold and quickly rushed to her side.
"Wen? Wen! Wake up!"
With a small grunt, Elowen's eyes squinted open. Damon breathed a sigh of relief and helped her sit up.
"What happened?"
"A 5'7 brunette and her blonde accomplice happened."
Damon carefully maneuvered Elowen onto her feet before pulling out his phone to call Stefan. He put the call in speaker.
"Hey," Stefan said when he answered. "What time are you guys coming home?"
"Yeah, about that…" Damon trailed off.
"What happened?"
"The lead I had on Katherine, Elena and Rebekah stole. We're back to square one."
Stefan didn't say anything for awhile. Elowen and Damon shared a glance.
"Stefan?" Elowen tried.
"I didn't stop the massacre," Stefan blurted at last.
Elowen and Damon looked at each other in shock.
"Guess Silas has everything he needs," Damon said.
"Everything but the cure."
