All I Want - Joni Mitchell

"So I decided to make roasted chicken instead of lasagna" He announces, making himself known, as he puts a shirt on.

Teddy glances up as he enters the kitchen. Owen noticed right away that there was a flash of fear in her face that she quickly masked with a smile. She straps Allison onto her high chair and places a bowl of berries in front of her. He walks over and places a kiss on top of little blonde hair.

"Okay, sounds good. We have chicken."

"You okay?" He asks Teddy, searching for her eyes.

"Yep" She says. She turns around and walks to the

"Tedd—"

"I…I'm fine"

He catches her hand and pulls her close and wraps his arms around her waist. "What's going on? I thought we were having a great time." He pulls her close and leans his forehead against hers. The tips of their nose touching. She stopped fighting him and gives into his embrace.

"We were."

"Then tell me what's wrong"

"Did I mess it up?"

"Mess what up?

"This. I know you said you don't have anything more than friendship and here I am, messing it all up—"

"You're not messing anything up. I wanted this too, remember? I said yes. You said yes. We both wanted this and we are not under the influence. We are not…consumed by anything other than a need for each other. You're not messing anything up" He reaches for her face and caresses her cheek. He leans in for a kiss and she pulls away and nuzzles into his neck.

"We're okay?"

"We are so okay. And it was good"

She chuckles and wraps her arms around his waist and gives it a squeeze. "It was."

He rubs her back to calm her down. For a second he was afraid that he'd messed it up. Maybe he didn't really want to be with him and he pressured her into it. He hasn't been sure about what's going on in Teddy's mind. He used to be able to read her mind, to anticipate her every move. But now it feels like they're both walking on eggshells around each other. He knows he needs to just take the initiative. To just be there for her.

"Leo's still napping?"

"Yep. I should really wake him up" She says pulling away from his embrace and he watches her make her way to Leo's room.

He doesn't regret having sex with her. He always had more than friendship in him reserved for Teddy. He said he didn't because he was hurt and confused and he didn't know what Teddy wanted and needed at the time. He's convinced himself that Teddy was never in love with him. He made himself think that Teddy just used him to feel good. And everything is confusing and he can't make himself unthink that.

But today, whatever happened in their bed, that was more than sex. He felt passion and rage and excitement. No one has ever made him feel all those things at once. It was decades of suppressed feelings and confusing thoughts and hurt and passion. She made mistakes and he tries to understand and accept that she is allowed to make mistakes. But it's hard for him now to read her and understand her and figure out what she really feels. She doesn't know if she can fully trust her, there will always be that doubt lingering. It will come back to him every now and then. But a part of him healing too is to move past this. Learn to trust her again. Trust that she's healing and that she's learning to share her feelings. He wants to believe that she loves him too. And that she wanted to do what they did, and not just to put a bandaid on some pain she's been harboring. Today felt good and light. She felt light and happy and clear.

"Dada" Allison says, interrupting his thoughts.

"Yes, Allison?" He asks as he wipes some strawberry juice from her cheeks.

Allison just stares at him as she shoves tiny cut up pieces of strawberries in her mouth. Their perfect daughter. Almost his carbon copy. He has always wanted to have a family. He's always wanted kids. And Leo comes along and then his tiny little bundle of surprise. Allison. Their Allison. Her namesake comes into mind sometimes. He just can't help it. He should have known she was more than just a friend to Teddy. The way Teddy talked about her all those years. He should have known. But it's done. And she's gone. So why does it still hurt?

"Dada." She says again, handing him little cut up strawberries.

"Thanks, munchkin."

She was named after an important person in Teddy's life. That's that. That's all it is. Their daughter wouldn't exist in this world if it weren't for Teddy's Allison. It's that simple. So maybe it's time to bury that grudge he's holding. Maybe it's time to stop obsessing and overthinking every single thing Teddy does. Maybe it's time to trust that she's healing.

It's time to trust that she wants him. That she loves him and their family.

"Dad!" Leo shrieks as he rushes to him. Teddy behind him, smiling happily.

He wants all of this. He wants the whole thing. He wants her. He wants to give her everything. More than friendship. More than love. So they can start their healing together. They deserve happiness.

Their kids deserves happiness.

The rest of the day was an event. He forgets how much time the kids consume. They put on a movie to entertain the kids while they made dinner. Owen made a roasted chicken and mashed potato and she made a salad. Owen teased her that he's doing all the heavy lifting, she rolls her eyes in response that she's entertaining the kids which is arguably the heavier of the lifting. He feels relieved that they can joke around and banter again. Everything seems close to normal. There were no dark clouds looming over them.

Although in true Seattle fashion, the sunny day eventually turned into cloudy and rainy. They were planning on having a nice little picnic in their backyard but the clouds and rain rolled in. Then it eventually turns into torrential downpour with lightning and thunder. They're watching some old cartoon about dinosaurs. The kids were amused at first, but they were distracted as soon as the first thunder rumbled. Allison clutches onto Owen immediately and Leo nuzzles into Teddy's side. Teddy and Owen look at each other with a soft smile.

"Too bad you probably can't run back to the hotel." She says, scooting closer to Owen and leans against him.

He can't help but laugh. "I probably shouldn't."

They were a sight to see—the four of them snuggled in their couch. The fireplace is on. The movie, still playing but definitely forgotten. Allison fell asleep on his chest. Her little fists clutching onto his shirt still. Leo still fighting to stay awake, muttering something about Littlefoot the dinosaur.

They both know it's probably time to put the kids to bed, but they guiltily want to snuggle them a little bit longer. These nights are rare—the four of them nuzzled. The four of them in a snugglepile, like they're any normal family. Like there was no betrayal and secrets and pain. This is everything he's dreamed of, so he hopes there will be more nights like this. He wants to hold the kids, and hold her all the time. Spend time with them. Watch the kids grow. This was the dream. This was both their dreams.

"I don't want to go back to the hotel."

"Then don't. Our bed is big enough for the two of us. We don't have to sleep in the same bed if you don't—"

"Or we can. I mean. It's fine."

"Okay."

"Okay."

"I should put them to bed"

"Five more minutes?" He says, kissing the top of Allison's head. He's feels that he's already missed so much of her life. He wonders where the time went. She was just a tiny baby and she just sprouted into this tiny child.

He watches as Teddy pulls a blanket over Leo and runs her hand down his little back. He marvels at the way Teddy loves and takes care of him. He didn't realize Teddy would get too attached to Leo, and Leo to Teddy. He watched her go from Weddy to Mommy in a few weeks. He never doubted Teddy's love for their kids. He knew that's real. He was always sure that's genuine.

"Mommy?" Leo says sleepily, removing his thumb from his mouth, looking up at the two of them.

"Hmm?"

"I want a dinosaur"

"Oh Leo" She says, running her fingers through his unruly hair

"Why did we pick this movie again? This is so depressing." Owen says, laughing.

"I don't know. They don't know what's happening."

"Okay, but for us. This is depressing."

"Leo picked it." She says laughing "He's going through a dinosaur phase"

"So we picked The Land Before Time?"

"Should I have recommended Jurassic Park to our child?"

"Okay that's fair."

Teddy just gives him a smile "Okay, let me put them to bed because they get cranky."

"I'll take Allison you take Leo?" Owen asks

"I want mommy" Leo says sleepily

"I got you, baby"

"Good night dad" Leo stifles a yawn and sleepily drags Teddy to his bedroom.

He watches before taking their daughter to hers.

He doesn't ever want to live far away from them. He wants the nightly bedtime routine and the morning wake up calls and the weekly movie nights. He wants to hold his entire life in his arms.

"Tea?"

"Tea sounds good" He says, looking out the window. Lightning illuminating the sky. The trees dancing in the wind. "It's really coming down"

"I know. I kinda like it"

"I know." He says smiling at her. She hands him a steaming cup and she sits across from him.

"So," Teddy starts. She takes a deep breath before continuing. "I know that you moving back doesn't mean we're back together—"

"Yeah…"

"And just so we're on the same page, we both want to…take our time with this and not rush into anything."

"Yeah."

"Okay. But I'm glad you're coming home."

"Me too." He says "And just while we're setting rules and boundaries, I'm really enjoying the…sex… so I wouldn't say that's off the table, obviously unless it's an inappropriate time."

She laughs. He thinks it's such a beautiful sound. "Of course, of course"

"And we tell each other everything."

"Everything. Thoughts. Feelings. Fears."

"Yes."

"And no strings so if you want to date—"

"No" He says "No, Teddy. I don't. Unless it's you."

She blushes "Okay, I'm not going to argue that."

"I think we should date each other….eventually. That kind of sounds nice."

"Right?" She smiles "So.. what is this then? What are we doing?"

"We're friends… co-parents.. who live together… who maybe will have sex every now and then… who can potentially date again once they figure their shit out"

"I like that."

"Me too." He says, moving closer to her. He can't help it. She is intoxicating. She is his weakness. "My answer will always be I love you. And I mean that."

Tea turned into scotch. They went from the couch to the floor by the fireplace. Totally friendly and platonically sitting across from each other laughing their asses off. They were just… talking. They're catching up on ever

"So tell me.. what else did I not know about Teddy Altman."

"Hmmm" She says laughing as she takes a sip from her drink. "I failed Biology in high school. I had to go to summer school."

"I don't believe that."

"It is. It was a whole fiasco. My parents were really mad. They gave me the whole how are you going to become a doctor if you fail Biology. It was definitely the only time I've felt like a loser."

"I do not believe you ever failed anything."

"It's true. It was embarrassing. I never told anyone that." She says "What do you mean, I've failed at everything. I failed you. I failed our family. I fail people."

"You're working on that" he says thoughtfully, stretching out by the fire. "You know I was afraid that I know you too well and there won't be any surprises anymore."

"Surprise I'm a terrible person?"

"You're not, though. You're just more…complex."

Teddy just shrugs and takes a sip of her scotch. "You're a good egg, Owen Hunt" she says, outstretching her leg, giving him a little kick.

"I have my flaws too"

"Who the hell set the standard for being a good person. We're all complex human beings. Nobody is perfect. Of course you have flaws. That's what makes you human. It doesn't make you not good. So just say 'thank you, Teddy. I am a good egg'"

"Only if you say out loud that you're not a terrible person"

"Touche"

They sit in silence for a few moments just eyeing each other. There are plenty of questions he wants to ask her but he still doesn't know what's going on in her head.

"Have there been the women?" He blurts out. He doesn't know if it's the scotch or something, but he just said it out loud. "I mean… besides Allison?"

Teddy chuckles and downs her drink. "No. No. I mean, I can appreciate a beautiful woman. Absolutely. But not like that."

"What was it about her?"

"Do you want to know the truth?"

"I thought that's what we're doing here."

"Okay, here's the thing, which I'm only realizing now. Don't get me wrong, she's one of my favorite people in this world, but she gave me this love and affection and care nobody has ever given me—I mean, at that time obviously, before you—and she just understood me and I've never been with a woman before, I had no idea what the hell I was doing or feeling. And I didn't have to try too hard to be myself around her and she just let me be me. But I just kind of.. fell in love with that feeling. That..companionship. The affection. And the sex was good, so what the hell. I just kind of used her to fill a void. Everyone I loved died and I just wanted to feel other things besides grief. Allison filled that void until…until she was gone. I don't know if she really loved me, I hope she did. But it didn't matter because I didn't get to have that freedom with her. We were always hiding. From society. From Claire. So I've been really thinking about it. Did I love Allison more than my best friend or did I love the affection Allison gave me?"

"Is there a difference?"

"Yes, absolutely. You, for example? I know I loved—love—you for decades. Even when you had other women I just knew I loved you and every part of you. That's without the affection. Without the physical touch. I knew that I loved you. You weren't just someone to numb the grief or the pain or the anxiety. So to answer your question, no there hasn't been other women. Not yet at least" She says smirking at him, giving him a little wink. He knows it's a mechanism to move away from the subject.

"I was just curious."

"I know. That's why I'm telling you. And these are all things I'm just learning now. Apparently talking through it helps. And I'm not knocking whatever history I had with Allison, because there was love there and that was real, but that's a whole different chapter and that's over—it has been over. And I don't want to not talk about it anymore because not talking about it doesn't really do anything. It just complicates everything. But I trust you. And I love you. So I tell you these things."

"I appreciate it."

"Okay now you have to answer my question. Fuck, Marry, Kill - Me, Cristina, Amelia"

"Oh come on!"

"I'm kidding, don't answer that. I'm still far too vulnerable" She says laughing "Okay fine - Bohkee, Bailey, Catherine Fox"

He guffaws like he hasn't laughed in ages. "What is wrong with you!"

Teddy just snorts and gets up to refill her glass "Another round?" She asks, pointing at his glass.

It was nice to see her laugh again. Her eyes sparkle even in the dimmed room. "C'mere" He says, pulling her by the hand into his lap. "I love you too."

"I thought we're just friends"

"We are."

"So? Refill?"

"Yes please"

She leans her forehead against his, his heart skips a beat, hoping she'd lean in for a kiss. She wriggles out of his grasp."We should add that to the rules- No sex when we've had more than half a bottle."

"Should we be writing these rules down?" He asks, Teddy just shrugs in response.

He watches her walk away to the kitchen and refills their drinks. He gets up to flip the record that was playing in the background. It's been a while since he's had this much fun with her. It reminded him of Germany. The laughing. The talking. The fireplace. The records. The easiness of everything.

He follows her in the kitchen and pulls her close and sways to the music. "Something I never told you?" He says, leaning his forehead against hers. "This was supposed to be our first dance..I mean at our wedding. It was going to be a surprise."

"Your Song by Elton John, are you kidding?"

"It's a nice song."

"I thought you'd go with a more classic wedding song like For Once In My Life like Frank Sinatra or something but I guess that would be a lie since it's your third wedding"

"Ooo, shots fired" He says, laughing. Pretending to be offended. "This song is nice though. What would you have picked?"

"I don't know. Maybe Sparks by Coldplay? Maybe I'm Amazed by Paul McCartney? Crazy Love by Van Morrison?"

"Oh so you've thought about this?"

"Of course I've thought about this." She says softly, leaning closer. Their lips millimeters apart "But I like this song too."

"What about You're My Best Friend by Queen?" He says, their bodies pressed against each other. Her arms around his neck, his around her waist.

"That's a good one too. It's fun."

"And that one would not be a lie."

"No, that would be true. We are best friends."

"We are" He says, leaning in for a kiss. She pulls away, but not too far away.

"Remember the new rule."

"Fine." He whispers. Leaning his forehead against hers again. "Can we keep dancing?"

"Yes."

They sway to the music through the entire song. Enjoying each other's closeness. He wants to do this every night of his life.

All he wants is to dance with her in the kitchen forever.
