Mabel and Kevin laughed enthusiastically as they ran out to the middle of the forest together, happy to be alone and away from the confines of the Shack. Happy to explore and spend time together. The August sun was beating down in beautiful, broad beams that seemed to set every scrap of nature alight in style - seemed to capture Oregon at its brightest and most welcoming. They were holding hands, enjoying eachother's company, and were fully intending to go and harass some gnomes, or spray perfume on Manotaurs to make them scream like little girls.
But first, Mabel had a different mission in mind.
The young couple crossed over into a bright, warm glade - a babbling brook splashed away alongside them, the long grass swaying peacefully in the hot summer's wind. The smell of ripening berries from the nearby brambles made it seem only more homely and welcoming.
"I think this'll do."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, definitely. It's got everything he needs! Lots of space, berry bushes, a freshwater spring... It's perfect! Exactly what he deserves, Kevin!"
"And you think this is definitely a good idea?"
"He can't help who he is, Kevin. Without his boss, he's harmless." Mabel huffed as he rummaged through her pocket.
"I'm surprised he didn't melt in your pocket." Kevin chuckled as he watched his girlfriend treat her new pet with more than a little bit of reverence.
She carefully pulled out a golden snack cake, its saucer eyes never leaving her, its slack tongue wagging with slightly vacant excitement and enthusiasm as she slowly, gently, placed it on the ground.
"Go on, Murp. Go live your life. Be free." She beamed, pulling out a tiny sun hat and perching it on him.
The little Dinkie paused and looked up at her - and Kevin - before slowly crawling away, its golden, syrupy coating shining in the sun as the dim, vacant and artificially flavoured creature basked in the open air, and made its way into the forest.
"You think he'll be okay?" Kevin asked, arm around her waist.
"I'm sure he'll be fine." Mabel smiled. "What's the worst that could happen?"
THE END
