Adam walked off the bullhead at Beacon's landing platform smiling. The cameras, the crowds of people. He knew it would be the last moments of peace he'd joy before being handed over to Atlas.
Jaune and Qrow walked calmly in front of him, both of them ignoring reporters.
Jaune said nothing, continuing to keep his sword pointed at all times at Adam's back.
Adam looked at Beacons grounds while being walked forward. "The school looks nicer than the last time I saw it."
Jaune glared at him. "You think this is funny?" he ignored the cameras snapping.
"Jaune Arc! How long before Taurus is released into Atlesian Custody?"
"Jaune! Over here!"
Adam kept speaking. "The reporters seem to like you. Must be fun to enjoy all the attention. Being Ozpin's new poster boy."
Before Jaune could say anything, Qrow shook his head.
~000~
In a dark room with his hands chained to his chair, Adam watched Glynda pace back and forth. She couldn't stop staring at the sword Jaune handed her, and the White Fang member it belonged to. "I don't understand. How'd you find him so quickly?"
Qrow spoke. "Jaune?"
"My semblance lets me move very fast. And it also makes me very strong, in more ways than one." Jaune said. "I found him the first night we got into the forest."
"And the others?" asked Glynda.
"We couldn't take both Taurus and the rest of them with us," Qrow said. "He's all we got."
Ozpin leaned off the wall. "Curious. I didn't think you could take him alive."
"I gave him no choice," Jaune said. "I couldn't give him what he wanted."
Not speaking unless spoken to, Adam watched them all quietly.
Glynda crossed her arms, walking towards Adam. "I wonder. If you agree to give us a televised confession, would you consider making a deal?"
"I don't deal with humans." Adam didn't even bother looking at her. "Much less the one's holding me captive."
"It might save your life. It might save you from torture."
Now Adam looked at her. "I fight for the right cause. Glynda Goodwitch." he enunciated as if every part of her name disgusted him. "Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to die for the White Fang. For the Faunus. What do you fight for?"
"Not Salem," said Glynda.
"Quite frankly I don't serve her either," Adam smirked at Qrow, Ozpin, Jaune, and Glynda.
Ozpin approached him. "Adam. Give us what we need. It could save you a great deal of pain."
Adam leaned forward onto the table. "The only pain I'd feel is knowing I failed. As far as I can tell, my capture only proves my mission was a success."
"Winter Schnee will round up your men and execute them one by one until you talk," Ozpin said. "We need to avoid that. You need to avoid that."
"I've already made myself clear. Now if there's nothing else. I'd like to spend my last few days in peace. I don't want the last faces I see to be you all." Adam said calmly.
In the hallway outside of the room, Ozpin spoke to Jaune. "Go to your team."
"But-"
"Jaune. Go."
Nodding, Jaune left quietly.
Qrow turned to Ozpin who spoke to him. "Is it true? Did he really capture him so easily?"
"Worst part was I barely had the opportunity to enjoy my morning coffee," Qrow said, earning a glare from Glynda. "What?"
"This is serious Qrow. No time for jokes." Glynda said.
"But I wasn't kidding. He was that quick about it," said Qrow.
"We're wasting time." Glynda fixed her glasses. "The longer we keep bantering. The longer we wait for Winter Schnee to return. She won't ask when she arrives. She wants Adam Taurus alive more than anyone."
Ozpin sighed. "I was hoping he'd listen to reason. It's clear that won't work."
"So what do we do?" Glynda asked.
"I've known Blake used to be his protege for some time," said Ozpin.
Glynda's eyes widened. "What? Whose protege?"
"Adam Taurus' protege," Ozpin said without even blinking an eye.
"How long have you known this?" asked Glynda.
"Far too long if you're telling us now." Qrow agreed with her.
Ozpin stayed silent for a moment. "Since the day she enrolled at Beacon Academy, I knew who she was. I knew she was a Faunus, but yes, eventually I found out that she wasn't just part of the White Fang. She and Adam Taurus practically ran the White Fang by themselves."
"And you didn't think to tell us?" Glynda said.
"The girl isn't to blame for her past mistakes. She never murdered anyone."
"Regardless you can't keep something like that from us," Qrow said. "Not when Taurus is so vital to restoring the faith in the academies again."
"But I'm glad Blake has tried to make amends for her past mistakes. I didn't tell anyone because I truly believe Blake wanted to right the wrongs the White Fang made," said Ozpin. "That's why I never told anyone."
Glynda sighed. "Blake is one of the few people still enrolled here at Beacon. It's crucial we know everything important there is to know about her."
"Which is why I'm telling you this now. The moment she returns from her mission, we kindly ask her to persuade Taurus to confess. It's our best hope. Otherwise, General Schnee will take him away."
~000~
Pyrrha hugged Jaune before kissing him deeply on the mouth. "Are you all right?"
"I'm fine guys really." chuckled Jaune. "No reason to be so worried." he saw the looks on their faces.
"You just came back from your first Huntsman mission and took down one of the biggest bad guys!" Nora said. "How could we not be?"
Ren scratched his cheek. "It was a lot to do on your first mission."
"But I'm fine. Really," said Jaune.
"I mean after that killing that huge Grimm? Yeah, I can see why you'd feel that way," Nora admitted. "Now come on! I have a whole plate of food just beggin' to be eaten!" she lead Ren towards the cafeteria.
Jaune looked after her. "Well, I guess it's lunch."
"Jaune wait," said Pyrrha. "What happened?"
"I just used my wires. It was over in about a few minutes."
She laughed at how casually he made it sound. "What's Ozpin going to do with him?"
"He wouldn't let me know. I honestly have no idea how we're going to get a confession out of him," said Jaune. "Atlas worries me though. I heard Winter followed Ironwood more than anyone."
"Amber's waiting for us in the cafeteria." Pyrrha took his hand. "Don't worry."
~000~
Amber leaned off the wall as Jaune passed the entrance to the cafeteria. "Heard the mission went well."
"Qrow said I did well."
Amber laughed. "That's putting it mildly. You'll be a Huntsman in no time."
"You seem strangely happy."
Amber shrugged. "With Winter Schnee looming over our shoulders every day now. I'd be happy to see her again."
"Why's that?"
"I don't usually get to talk to another Maiden. We got off on the right foot. Might help if she's willing to negotiate the transfer of Taurus' custody."
Jaune nodded to Pyrrha. "I'll catch up with you guys in a second. What do you mean?"
"Newly named General Schnee was chosen to be the next Winter Maiden. I specifically don't know if this could change since the attack on Vale. But I expect she'll make for a better General than Ironwood ever was that's for sure." said Amber. "As for you though. I think you've gotten so strong now that in a few short months you can probably be considered an entry-level Huntsman. It's hard to think of anything requiring fighting that you couldn't solve instantly."
"So what's our next move? Ruby brings back Roman and then what?"
Amber shrugged. "You'd have to ask Ozpin. For now, at least we have to prove the White Fang were behind the attack on Beacon, let's the currently boiling water between every single kingdom simmer down."
"Ozpin." Jaune said. "Yeah."
~000~
"We can't just tell everyone about Salem," Ozpin said calmly in his reconstructed office.
"And why not?" asked Jaune. "The CCT is still up. We have Taurus arrested and Torchwick's gonna be soon too."
"The credibility of both myself and the Council is currently non-existent after how many people died last month. Well over a hundred students died at Beacon alone, many on Huntsman in training teams. That's not even counting the civilian deaths."
Jaune remembered what Cardin said. "Guess that makes sense. So then when are we gonna do it?"
"Likely not for a long time. To heal ties with everyone else in the world, we need to make it clear we can still do our jobs. And we've been seriously failing."
Jaune shrugged. "I killed that giant Grimm. I brought in Taurus."
"You're just one student here at Beacon," said Ozpin. "The attack on Beacon made it clear how hard it is for us to protect people."
"So how are we gonna convince people we can? I mean look at the school, it's completely empty. No other Kingdom wants to talk to us, and Taurus knows he'll just be handed over to General Schnee and Atlas after he talks. What's the plan here then?"
"The same one I've had since the beginning. Train you all to become Huntsmen, then continue to keep the world safe."
Jaune sighed. "So there is no plan?"
"Jaune I made it clear to both you and your team, as well as Ruby's, that Beacon has to survive. You're free to walk away anytime you like."
Jaune said nothing for a moment. "I read in the history books that my great-great-grandfather Lionel lead the greatest army the world had ever seen in the Great War. What ever happened to it? We could really use one right now."
"Time happened," Ozpin said. "Atlas' Military outpaced the rest of Remnant in a few short decades. The same men Lionel led eventually passed away."
Jaune frowned. "I'm sorry about what I said about this plan. I just, everything just feels wrong now."
"It will I'm afraid. But Beacon truly is lucky to have you Jaune. I haven't seen a warrior as strong as you since Lionel himself. You're more than a spitting image of him, you're the embodiment of everything the Arc family could've asked for."
Jaune began to turn towards the elevator. "Right."
~000~
"Jaune?" Pyrrha opened the doors to the dorms, walking outside to see Jaune sit by himself on the steps of it.
Jaune said nothing, quietly passing a whetstone over his platinum sword.
"Jaune what's wrong?"
"What isn't?" Jaune said with a snort. "I'm probably the strongest student ever in Beacon. I can become a Huntsman in a few weeks and I'm not even 18. I have all this power, I can move so fast and hit so hard that I can do anything Ozpin needs me to do fighting-wise. Except make things feel less awful. I know I can do so much, but it feels like I can't do anything still."
"So what is this about?" Pyrrha sat next to him.
Jaune kept looking on blankly as he sharpened his sword. "I beat Adam Taurus, probably the best fighter in the White Fang easily in about two or three minutes. And I can't fix all this." he sent a hand towards the empty grounds of Beacon. "I promised myself I'd be the best Huntsman ever. And even after accomplishing that, it feels like I've done nothing at all. It just all feels pointless. What am I even supposed to do?"
"You sound sad. You sound worse than even when Cardin was bullying you and Velvet."
Jaune snorted again. "I miss those times actually. Things felt simpler, if push came to shove I could always just drop out of Beacon. Now I'm one of the last twelve people in the entire world who probably still trusts Ozpin, sixteen if you count Qrow and the teachers. And even then I don't really."
"Things were simpler back then. And simpler doesn't mean better necessarily. But look how far you've come. You saved Vale, and you saved us."
Jaune kept frowning. "Only for things to look more hopeless. My great-great-grandfather was some legendary warrior, and look what strength earned him. He died a bitter and resentful old man, so shut off from the rest of the world he was disgusted to even look at it."
"You won't end up like Lionel Jaune. I promise you." Pyrrha smiled. "Not when you have me. Not when you have Nora and Ren, and the rest of us."
Jaune smiled back weakly. "Thanks Pyrrha. But I still can't help but feel that killing the giant Grimm might not have changed anything. Sure I stopped Vale and Beacon from being destroyed, but so many people died that it might not have mattered."
"Of course it mattered," said Pyrrha. "You saved all our lives."
"Amber and Qrow saved you all, so did Ozpin and Glynda. I spent like twenty minutes fighting that thing."
Pyrrha put a hand on his shoulder. "You push yourself too hard. Don't blame yourself for all this."
"It's ironic, isn't it? For me to feel so powerless?" admitted Jaune blankly.
"Yes. But I still feel these current times are just going to be the worst of it. They'll come back to Beacon Jaune. Everyone who left. And people will learn the truth. I promise you Jaune, we will fix this."
Smiling, Jaune leaned his head onto Pyrrha's shoulder. "Couldn't have needed anyone but you to change my mind."
"It's no problem Jaune," said Pyrrha. "No problem at all."
~000~
"Fria, if you still want to change your mind. I won't stop you. The decision must be yours. Not mine, not anyones. Yours." Winter said.
The sickly Winter Maiden sighed, sipping the warm tea Winter passed her. "I won't change my mind. Not after what happened at Beacon."
"So it's done then. Penny Polendina will be the next Winter Maiden?"
"She will. You have enough on your plate. You took on this responsibility under the belief you wouldn't be running the Army. Send Penny my best regards."
Before Winter left, Fria put a hand on hers. "You wouldn't have enjoyed it."
"I've been ordered to kill anyone who's a threat to Atlas since I enlisted."
"Not because of that. Your duties would change, you would change."
Winter just nodded respectfully before she left.
~000~
Winter stepped into the council room quietly, already noting how Sleet and Camilla were looking at her.
"Congratulations." Sleet stamped a seal onto an edict before passing it to Winter. "As of today, the council has voted unanimously. All of Atlas' Military and Navy has passed completely to you. Effective immediately, you are now officially Supreme General Winter Schnee."
"Thank you, Councilman. This is an honor."
"However we do have one request with this appointment," Camilla said. "You are to collect Adam Taurus from Vale and head out to Vale as soon as possible."
Winter folded her new official edict into her pocket. "But the fleet's not even halfway repaired."
"This is a diplomatic mission. Not a military one. The last time Atlas ships were seen patrolling over Vale thousands died." said Sleet. "Atlas needs to project mercy now. Not strength."
"And if I refuse?"
Camilla raised an eyebrow. "He needs to stand trial. Ozpin wants to-"
"Ozpin is responsible for the catastrophe at the Vytal Festival!" Winter said. "He can't be allowed to decide our affairs. Vale was almost completely destroyed by the pride of Atlesian military technology, it's up to us to show we can't let criminals play us like puppets anymore!"
"You forget yourself, General," Sleet said calmly. "Your duty is to the people of Atlas."
"And not any of you," Winter said to the Council. "General Ironwood never would've stood for something so rash. And neither will I."
Quickly, she marched out of the Council chambers.
"General?" a soldier asked when she approached.
Winter spoke calmly. "Alert all personnel. Crew are to work double-time repairing the fleet."
"Sir yes sir!" the soldier saluted before running off.
Winter looked back at the Council chambers.
'Matter of time before they threaten funding for the Fleet reconstruction. I have to move quickly. I am not letting Ozpin of all people dictate what I should do. Not on my life.'
~000~
Winter watched from her office down below at the Atlesian Shipyards. Hundreds of men and women were working on constructing new battlecruisers and repairing damaged ones. Her view was perfect, and Winter looked around at her desk.
'Never would've imagined after serving General Ironwood for so many years. I would be the one replacing him at this very desk.'
There was a knock at the door. "General?"
Even Winter was getting used to being called this. "Yes?"
"Ms. Polendina is here to see you."
"Send her in."
Penny walked into Winter's office. "General." she bowed her head.
"Penny, please sit," Winter said. "Some tea?"
"No thank you," Penny said taking a seat in front of Winter's desk.
Sparks flew in the shipyards behind Winter on one of the ship frames while she spoke. "I just spoke to Fria this afternoon. You will become the next Winter Maiden."
"Me?"
"Surely you've been briefed on this."
"I have but. I still thought it was going to be you."
Winter sighed. "So did I. But Fria didn't want a General to become the next Maiden. You were the most logical choice."
"Winter- Thank you."
"Don't thank me. Thank Fria."
Penny bowed her head again. "Still. Thank you."
"I'm returning to Vale by next week. Adam Taurus will pay for what he did to General Ironwood."
Penny nodded. "I agree but. I thought the council wanted you to leave today."
"Not with the fleet in this shape. I was not chosen to be General to be the Council's lapdog, no matter what anyone says." Winter said rubbing her chin. "I will take Taurus from Ozpin if it's the last thing I do."
"Don't you think we're sending the wrong message? I mean, after what happened?"
"I understand Ruby is your friend. Weiss is my own sister, but I have a duty to Atlas. To Remnant. To keep it safe."
Penny as always still spoke respectfully. "I have the same responsibility General."
"So does that blonde boy. The one who killed that Grimm that flew out of Mount Glenn. Jaune. And yet he follows Ozpin around like the most loyal of pups. True strength is doing the tasks no one else has the courage to. No matter how distasteful."
"You mean, you want to take Adam Taurus by force?"
"No, the fleet is to project strength. But it's highly unlikely. Ozpin has a lot to answer for. Not as much as Taurus but still, a lot." said Winter. "I won't take you, or FNKI, or any other student with me."
"But if I come along as the next Winter Maiden. Wouldn't I be able to have a better time convincing Ozpin to give us Adam Taurus?"
Winter explained. "I don't plan on actually fighting. That would be unnecessary."
"Then as the next Winter Maiden. I humbly request you bring me with you to Beacon." Penny said.
"Penny, these friends of yours are hoping that just by asking Taurus he'll betray everything he lives for. I can't let the world's most wanted criminal smirk in a cell while I politely ask for him in return."
Penny raised an eyebrow. "By threatening war to take him?"
"He's murdered countless innocents in Vale alone. I shouldn't even be asking for him. Besides, there won't be any threats."
"All I'm asking is that you bring me along. Please, General."
Winter looked aside in thought.
'If I go with her, Ozpin will realize he has no choice. The fleet can still project strength. And she can represent a diplomatic approach.'
"Fine."
~000~
Blake stared into the campfire deep within the forest of a remote island south of Vacuo. "Ironwood would've tortured him for sure. Don't know if Winter will do the same or not."
"I know Winter. She's not going to do anything she'll end up regretting." Weiss said beneath her sleeping bag. "She won't threaten us. She won't torture anybody, no need to think she will."
"She doesn't know him," said Blake. "For all we know, getting captured was part of his plan again."
"No one's gonna save him this time," Ruby said. "Right?"
Yang shrugged. "I mean, he was about to be executed when he killed Ironwood instead. But I still don't think he'll get away."
"He wants us to be this worried," Blake said. "I know him. He wants us to worry if Winter will do anything to take him. He's already won by having so much confusion surrounding how many people died at the tournament."
Weiss spoke. "I guess stranger things have happened. Maybe he'll talk if you ask him to. Blake? Blake?"
She said nothing.
Ruby rubbed her eye as Zwei slept quietly on her sleeping bag. "I didn't think I'd be this tired searching for Torchwick all day."
"I did." Yang yawned. "Night."
~000~
Adam was surprised by who entered his cell. "Wasn't expecting you of all people to come see me."
"Blake should be back in a few weeks to talk to you."
"Blake." scoffed Adam. "Say that traitor's name again or-"
"Or what?" Jaune nodded towards his chained hands. "You'll kill me? Didn't work out that well last time."
"I still don't understand. That girl, the one with the greaves and the sword."
"Pyrrha. She's my girlfriend."
Adam nodded. "Right. People call her the greatest fighter in the world, at least still in training. I barely beat her when we fought, and I haven't even heard of you."
"Why're you so fine with talking to me?"
Adam shrugged sitting on his cell's bunk. "I've been imprisoned for the better part of an entire year. All I did in captivity was train to break out. And yet, you were able to beat me with ease. Not only that, but capture me in a matter of minutes. How?"
"I wanted to ask you a question instead." deflected Jaune. "How can you serve Salem? She only wants to destroy the entire world. How does that help the Faunus? How does that help you?"
"What you'd classify as destruction means something else to me entirely. And it's not because you're human and I'm not. Tell me, are you willing to risk your own life defending me when Winter Schnee and the entire Atlesian army comes asking for me?"
Jaune shook his head. "She wouldn't."
"She would," said Adam calmly. "I was a slave under Atlas. Like thousands of my brothers and sisters, those who ran away or fought back were butchered or branded like cattle. I'm sure your precious teachers never mentioned why exactly the Faunus still fight. Why we, every single Faunus struggle in the mud, in our own blood for freedom. Don't lecture me about Salem. When you haven't spent a single day in chains."
"Is that what you tell yourself when you murdered everyone here in Vale? You serve justice? Freedom?"
Adam chuckled quietly. "You're even stupider than you looked. Ozpin won't bring you or anyone justice. Tell Blake she'd be wasting her time. I'd rather see Ozpin and Schnee tear each other apart after I won."
"You won? Impressive thing to say locked up in here." Jaune raised an eyebrow.
Adam leaned forward from his bunk. "I wanted to die a warrior's death. Honorably. To seal the greatest victory the White Fang would ever have. I won't say a word about what we planned, what happened that day." Adam said calmly. "That friend of yours. Weiss Schnee. She and her family are among the richest group of slavers in the entire world. Think about that when you eat breakfast together when you see each other every day."
Jaune spoke quietly. "Between Weiss or Salem. Think I'd go with Weiss."
"Have you ever met Salem? Or are you just trusting what Ozpin said?"
"Have you?"
"Never have." Adam shook his head. "But I don't serve her. I pledged my life forever to the White Fang. If you're dumb enough to believe that I serve her instead, you're as lost as Blake. Weiss Schnee? Ozpin? I've squashed bugs with more honor than both of them put together."
Jaune began to leave as Adam kept speaking. "Back in the jungle. You could've killed me but you didn't. No one ever needed to know. You knew I wasn't going to talk. Why not kill me and be done with it?"
"I'm not a murderer," said Jaune. "I didn't want you to drag me down with you."
"You'll die like every other Huntsman who ever lived. Young and clueless."
"My great-great-grandfather died of old age. So did most people in my family. Guess we're the odd ones out." Jaune smirked as he left Adam's cell.
Seeing Jaune leave, Adam tried positioning himself on the floor of his cell to begin training again, only for his chains to lock him in place.
'Makes sense. They can't make that same mistake twice. Torchwick, I expect they'll bring him in soon too. I just hope they don't put us in the same cell.'
~000~
Leveling [Strong Hit], Jaune hit a car so hard with his fist it went flying backward across the junkyard. It crashed into the other wrecked cars behind it.
He considered going back to the Emerald Forest with Qrow and hunting Grimm, but decided against it.
Jaune looked at his palm.
'My Semblance is so powerful I could cut apart an Ancient Grimm with it. I gotta learn how to use it.'
Jaune raised his hand, concentrating on the smashed car with all he had. Opening his palm, Jaune tried channeling lightning. After about a minute or nothing but concentration, Jaune tried holding his hand.
Jaune saw nothing happen, there was no blast of electricity frying the smashed car and everything behind it to ash.
Again, Jaune raised his hand, concentrating as hard as he could on the car.
"Hey Jaune, whatcha doin'?" chirped Nora, sitting above him with her legs crossed.
Sighing, Jaune explained. "Trying to use my Semblance. Need to hit this car with as much electricity as I can."
"Hm. How much have you gotten so far?"
Jaune went back to strength training. "About none."
Nora watched as Jaune used well over 100 points of STR to fling a trashed car into the air before slicing it clean in half with his sword.
[You have gained +1 LV to Strong Hit!]
[You have gained +1 STR!]
Laughing, Nora watched both halves of the car fell onto the ground. "Wow. Can't say I remember you being this strong a year ago."
"I wasn't," Jaune said picking up a sledgehammer to train his strength again. He made sure to put goggles on to not get any glass into his eyes.
"I miss Sun. And everyone else. The school feels so empty now."
Jaune shrugged. "I only talked to Sun and Neptune a few times. I didn't know anyone else that well either."
Jaune used the sledgehammer to keep leveling Strong Hit. He smashed the car's roof into a pancake with his hammer, sending glass about. Then Jaune sent a roundhouse to the car's bumper, sending it flying off its wheels into another stack of other smashed cars.
The whole time, Jaune saw the Gamer was rewarding his strength leveling.
"You can throw cars about like they're nothing," said Nora. "Why do you have to train your Semblance so badly?"
"The last time I used it I killed that Wyvern. There are some things you can't just brute force your way through. Killing that giant flying Grimm on Beacon Tower taught me that. You need to be prepared for anything. I'm going to need my Semblance as a fallback at some point, and I have to be ready. I can't just let it almost kill me again." Jaune said.
"Do you believe everything they're saying? Do you really think Winter Schnee is coming to like? Take Adam Taurus without asking."
Jaune shrugged. "To be honest I don't. But I highly doubt she'll put Weiss in any danger."
"She's a General now though. Things have changed, especially after what the White Fang did."
"I know," said Jaune. "But I still don't feel as bad. Pyrrha made me hopeful about all this though."
Nora smiled from above him. "That's what she usually does I guess."
~000~
Zwei barked, running in circles.
Ruby woke up slowly from her sleeping back. Her eyes widened, from the looks of it, Zwei had found something.
'Is it Torchwick?'
Oobleck, as if it was the first thing he did when he woke up in the morning, sipped his coffee. "Ladies. Please wake up, we have a criminal to catch."
Yang rolled over as Zwei kept barking with a quiet groan. Weiss was still completely asleep and Blake was already out of her sleeping bag reading.
Ruby sighed as she got ready for the day ahead. She looked around at the forest, it was clear to her this search would still take weeks. And it would be nothing like her mission to Mount Glenn.
~000~
So. I've gotta cut all the bullshit outta my head and do what I like. Write. Also before anyone asks, chapter 29 does not exist, but I did update the fanfic with this chap. People mention it in the comments, but when I shift stuff around people get confused. So you can't read chapter 29 because it doesn't exist (yet), this is chapter 28. So thanks guys, peace.
