Chapter 28.
(Harry POV)
We just landed again.
"There we go, Perfect landing. Which isn't easy in such a tight spot," Dad said.
"You should be used to tight spots by now," Martha said.
"He isn't," I said.
"So Where are we?" Martha said.
"The end of the line," Dad said. "No place like it,"
Then Martha went out.
"Home, you brought us home," Martha said.
"Back to the morning after we left," Dad said.
"You sure this time," I said.
"Yes, So you've only been gone about 12 hours, No time at all, Really," Dad said.
"But all the stuff we've done, Shakespeare, New New York, Old New York," Martha said.
"Yep, All in one night," I said.
"Relatively speaking, Everything, should be just as it was. Books, CDs, Laundry," Dad said.
"Dad," I said.
"So back where you were, as Promised," Dad said.
"This is it?" Martha said.
"Yeah, I should probably," Dad said.
Then the Phone rings.
"Hi, I'm out leave a message," Martha's voicemail said.
"I'm sorry," Martha said.
"Martha? Are you there?" Pick it up, will you?" Martha's Mum said.
"It's mum, It'll wait," Martha said.
"All right then, pretend that you're out, With your boyfriend, If you like, I was only calling to say that your sister's on TV," Martha's Mum said. "On the News, of all things, Just thought you might be interested,"
Then we put it on.
"The Details are top secret," This old guy said on the TV
"How could Tish end up on the news?" Martha said.
"But I can tell you tonight, I will demonstrate a device," He said.
"She's got a new job, PR for some research lab," I said.
"With a push of a single button, I will change what it means to be human," He said.
Then Martha Turns it off.
"Sorry, you were saying," Martha said. "One trip is what we said,"
"Yeah," Dad said.
"I suppose things just kind of escalated," Martha said.
"Mm," Dad said. "Seems to happen to me a lot,"
"Thank you, For everything," Martha said.
"It was my pleasure," Dad said. "What about you, Coming,"
"I'll catch you up," I said.
"See you soon then," Dad said going in.
"Why?" Martha said.
"I'm not going anywhere yet, Plus May just stay here with you," I said.
Then The Tardis went.
"So Now what?" Martha said.
"Well," I said.
Then the Tardis came back and Landed then Dad popped his head out.
"No, I'm sorry, Did he say he was going to change what it means to be human?" Dad said.
"Oh, shit, Yes, he did," I said.
"Oh, We got to get ready come on," Martha said.
Then We got ready and headed there since it was close by. Dad was in his Tux.
"Oh, Black tie, Whenever I wear this, something bad always happens," Dad said.
"Dad, Mum made that clear, It's not the outfit that's just you," I said.
"Anyway I think it suits you, In a James Bond kinda way," Martha said.
"James Bond, Really," Dad said.
"Nope," I said.
"Hey," Dad said.
Then we headed in.
"Oh look, they've got nibbles, I love nibbles," Dad said.
"Bloody hell," I said.
"Hello," Tish said.
"Tish," Martha said.
"You look great," Tish said.
"I know she does, Not too bad yourself," I said.
"Hey. Impressive isn't it," Tish said.
"Very," Martha said.
"And 2 nights out in a row for you?" Tish said. "That's a social life,"
"I'll end up in all the gossip columns," Martha said.
"You should keep an eye out for Photographers. And Mum, She's even dragging Leo along with her," Tish said.
"Leo in a tux," I said.
"Leo in a black tie, That I must see," Martha said. "This is the Doctor,"
"Hello," Dad said.
"Is he with you 2?" Tish said.
"Yeah," I said.
"But he's not on the list how did he get in?" Tish said.
"He's my plus one," Martha said.
"So, this Lazarus, He's your boss?" Dad said.
"Professor Lazarus, yes, I'm part of his executive staff," Tish said.
"She's in the PR department," Martha said.
"I'm Head of the PR department, Actually," Tish said.
"You're joking?" Martha said.
"I put this whole thing together," Tish said.
"So do you know what the Professor's going to be doing tonight, That looks like it might be a Sonic Micro-field Manipulator," Dad said.
"He's a science geek, I should've known, Got to get back to work now," Tish said. "I'll catch up with you later," Then Tish left.
"Science Geek, What does that mean?" Dad said.
"That you're obsessively enthusiastic about it," Martha said.
"Ah nice," Dad said.
"Martha," Martha's mum said from behind us.
"Mum," Martha said Hugging her.
"All right, What's the occasion?" Martha's Mum said.
"What do you mean?" Martha said. "I'm just pleased to see you, That's all,"
"But you saw me last night," Martha's Mum said.
"I know, I just missed you," Martha said.
"You're looking good, Leo," I said.
"If Anyone asks me to fetch them a drink, I'll swing for them," Leo said.
"You both disappeared last night," Martha's Mum said.
"We just went home," I said.
"Just you 2?" Martha's Mum said.
"This is a friend of mine, The Doctor," Martha said.
"Doctor what?" Martha's Mum said.
"Just the Doctor, We've been doing some work together," I said.
"All right mate," Leo said.
"Lovely to meet you, Mrs, Jones, Heard a lot about you," Dad said.
"Have you? What have you heard then," Martha's Mum said.
"Anyway," I said.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm Professor Richard Lazarus and tonight I'm going to perform a miracle," Lazarus said. "It is I believe the most important advance since Rutherford split the atom, The Biggest leap since Armstrong stood on the moon, Tonight, You will watch and wonder, But tomorrow, You will wake to a world which will be changed forever," Then went in and it fired up.
Then The console started.
"Something's wrong," Dad said.
"It's overloading," I said.
Then Dad ran over and started working.
"Somebody stop him, Get him away from those controls," This old bitch said.
"If that thing goes up it'll take the whole building with it, Is that what you want? If not Shut it," I said.
So he managed to shut it down. Then We went to open it.
"Get it open," Dad said.
We managed to get it open and. Someone stepped out but it wasn't Lazarus. It was this younger guy.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Richard Lazarus, I am 76 years old and I am reborn," Lazarus said.
Then Everything almost went back to normal.
"What just happened?" I said.
"That can't be the same guy. It's impossible, It must be a trick," Martha said.
"Oh, it's not a trick," Dad said. "I wish it were,"
"Then what happened?" I said.
"He just changed what it means to be human," Dad said.
"That can't be good, Can it," I said.
"I don't know," Dad said.
Then Both Martha and Dad moved over as Lazarus as he was eating like mad. Then Lazarus and the Bitch walked off.
Then I went over.
"Ooh, He's out of his depth, He's no idea the damage he might have done," Dad said.
"So what do we do now?" Martha said.
"This place must be full of laboratories, I say we do our test," I said.
"Lucky, I've just collected a DNA sample, then isn't it," Martha said.
"That's my girl," I said.
Then We got there and Dad got the sample off her hand and then started looking at it. Then I Pulled Martha into me.
"I can't see anything different," Martha said.
"Look at it," Dad said.
"Wow, Did that just change," I said. Dad nodded. "But it can't have,"
"It did," Dad said.
"It's impossible," Martha said.
"2 Impossible things we've seen so far tonight," I said.
"Don't you love it when that happens?" Dad said.
"That means Lazarus has changed his own molecular patterns," Martha said.
"Hyper-sonic sound waves to destabilise the cell structure, Then a metagenetic programme to manipulate the coding," Dad said.
"He hacked into his own genes and instructed them to rejuvenate, But they're still mutating now," I said.
"Because he missed something," Dad said. "Something in his DNA's been activated and won't let him stabilise,"
"Something's trying to change him," I said.
"Change him into what," Martha said.
"I don't now, But I think we need to find out," Dad said.
"That woman said they were going upstairs," Martha said.
"Let's go," Dad said.
Then we headed up there. But when we got there he wasn't there.
"Damn it, Where is he?" I said.
"This is his office all right," Martha said. "Don't know, Let's try back at the Reception,"
"Wait, What is that?" I said as we headed over and we found a corpse of that bitch.
"Is that Lady Thaw," Martha said.
"Used to be," Dad said.
"What happened to her?" I said.
"It's just a shell, had all of the life energy drained out of her," Dad said.
"Like she's been squeezed like the juice of an orange," I said.
"Lazarus," Martha said.
"Could be," Dad said.
"So he's changed already," I said.
"Not necessarily, you saw the DNA, It was fluctuating," Dad said.
"The process must demand energy, This might not have been enough, So he will do it again," I said.
Then We went to the lifts and headed back down.
When we got down there we started looking for him.
"I can't see him," Martha said.
"He can't be far, Keep looking," Dad said.
"Hey, you all right, Marth? I think Mum wants to talk to you," Leo said.
"Have you seen Lazarus anywhere Leo?" I said.
"Well, he was getting cosy with Tish a couple of minutes ago," Leo said.
"With Tish," Martha said.
"Ah, Doctor," Martha's mum said.
"Where did they go?" Dad said.
"Upstairs, I think, Why?" Leo said.
"Shit," I said As we ran into the lift and headed up.
Then We got up there but no sign of them.
"Where are they?" Martha said.
"The Fluctuating DNA'll give off an energy signature," Dad said.
"Can our sonics, track it," I said.
"Maybe able to pick it up," Dad said. "Got him,"
"Where?" Martha said.
"The Roof," I said.
Then we headed up and saw them.
"Falls the shadow," Dad said.
"So the Mysterious Doctor, Knows his Eliot, I'm impressed," Lazarus said.
"Martha? What are you doing?" Tish said.
"Tish, Get away from him," Martha said.
"What? Don't tell me what to do?" Tish said.
"You had time for poetry, Lazarus, even being so busy defying the laws of nature," Dad said.
"You're right Doctor," Lazarus said. "One lifetime's been too short for me to do everything I'd like, How much more I'll get done in 2 or 3 or 4,"
"It doesn't work like that," Dad said. "Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80, It's not the time that matter's it's the person,"
"But if it's the right person," Lazarus said. "What a gift that would be,"
"Or a curse," I said.
"Look at what you've done to yourself," Dad said.
"Who are you to judge me?" Lazarus said.
"Over here, Tish," Martha said.
"You have to spoil everything don't you?" Tish said. "Every time I find someone nice you have to try and find fault,"
"Tish, He's a monster," Martha said.
"The age thing's a bit freaky, but it work for Catherine Zeta Jones," Tish said.
"Shit. Martha, Tish, You going have to leave that for now," I said.
Then Lazarus changed.
"The Hell is that," I said.
"RUN!" Dad said as we ran in and got the doors closed and locked before he could get in.
"Are you ok?" Martha said.
"I was gonna snog him," Tish said.
"Bad image, Tish," I said.
"Security one, Security one," PA said.
"What's happening?" I said.
"An intuition, It triggers a security lockdown kills most of the power, stops the lifts, Seals the Exit," Tish said.
"He must be breaking through that door," Dad said.
"Stairs, Come on," I said.
Then we ran down and the Door Breaks.
"He's in," I said.
"We haven't got much time," Dad said.
Then We got there.
"Tish is there another way out?" I said.
"There's an exit in the corner, but it'll be locked now," Tish said.
"On it," I said Head over the with my Sonic as Dad Tried to warn them but no luck. Then Lazarus showed up.
"Harry," Martha said.
"Almost have it," I said.
Then got it open.
"Over here, this way, Everyone down the stair, now, hurry," Martha said.
Then Lazarus killed another person. Then he turned towards Leo and Martha's Mum.
"Lazarus, Leave them alone," Dad said.
"Martha," Martha's Mum said.
"Come on stay with me," Martha said.
"What's the point? You can't control it, The Mutation is too strong," Dad said. "Killing those people won't help you, You're a fool, A vain old man who thought he could defy nature, Only Nature got her own back, Didn't she? You're a joke, Lazarus, A footnote in the history of failure," Then Dad took off Running as Lazarus went after him.
"What's the Doctor Doing?" Tish said.
"Buying us time," I said.
"Leo, Focus on me, let me see your eyes," Martha said. "He's got concussion. Mum you'll need to help him downstairs, This'll keep the swelling down,"
"We'll be right behind you," I said.
"Tish Move," Martha said.
"We need to get out of here," I said.
Then we got down to the doors but they were closed.
"Tish, Where's the security panel," I said.
"Over there, Behind the Desk," Tish said.
"On it," I said Then Ran over and jumped over the Desk. Then Found it and used the Sonic on that which shut down the Security 1 Lockdown and opened the doors.
Then We got everyone out.
"I going back, His going need all the help he can get," I said.
"Hold up, I'm coming with you," Martha said.
"You can't, You saw what that thing did, It'll kill you," Martha's Mum said.
"Only if It can catch us which doubt it," I said.
"It's that Doctor, Isn't it," Martha's mum said to me. "That's what happened to you, That's why you've changed,"
"He was buying us time, Harry. Time for you to get out too," Tish said.
"I'm not going anywhere," I said Then Headed back up. As did Martha.
"Martha," Her mum said.
"Where would he go?" Martha said.
"No idea yet," I said.
Then there was a bang.
"Wow," I said.
"Where did that come from?" Martha said.
"Labs," I said.
Then we Ran down there way and into him.
"What are you doing this," Dad said.
What you don't need backup," I said.
"How did you," Dad said.
"Heard the explosion," I said.
"I blasted Lazarus," Dad said.
"Did you kill him?" Martha said. As I saw him.
"More, sort of annoyed him," I said.
Then We run. Then we were back in the main area.
"What now? We've just gone round in a circle," Martha said.
"We can't lead him outside," I said.
"Come on, get in," Dad said as we got into the thing.
"Are we hiding?" Martha said.
"No, He knows' we're here but this is his masterpiece, I'm betting he won't destroy it, Not even to get at us," Dad said.
"But we're trapped," Martha said.
"Well, yeah, that is a slight problem," Dad said.
"You mean you don't have a plan?" I said.
"Yes, the plan was to get inside here," Dad said.
"Then What?" Martha said.
"Well, then I'd come up with another plan," Dad said.
"In your own time then," Martha said. "Hey,"
"Sorry," Dad said. "Ah here we go,"
"What are you going to do with that?" Martha said.
"Improvise," Dad said.
"I still don't understand where that thing come from is it alien?" Martha said.
"No, For once it's strictly human in origin," Dad said.
"Human, How can it be human?" I said.
"Probably from Dormant Genes in Lazarus's DNA. This reactivated them, Now it looks like they're becoming dominant," Dad said.
"So it's a throwback," I said.
"Some option that evolution rejected millions of years ago. But the potential is still there, Locked away in your genes, forgotten until Lazarus Unlocked it by mistake," Dad said.
"It's like Pandora's box," Martha said.
"Exactly, Nice shoes by the way," Dad said.
"Oi," I said.
Then It powered up.
"Doctor, What happened?" Martha said.
"He's switched the machine on," Dad said.
"That's not good," I said.
"I was hoping it would take him a bit longer," Dad said.
"Want to hurry up," I said.
"I know, Nearly done," Dad said.
"What are you doing?" I said.
"Setting the capsule to reflect energy rather than receive it," Dad said.
"Will that kill him?" Martha said.
"When he transforms, he's 3x the size. Spreading himself thin," Dad said.
"We're going to end up like him," Martha said.
"Just one more," Dad said then it stopped. Then we got out.
"I thought we were going to go through the blender then," Martha said. As I got her down.
"It really shouldn't take that long just to reverse the polarity," Dad said. "I must be a bit out of practice,"
"Must be," I said.
"He seems so, Human again," Martha said. "Its kind of pitiful,"
"Eliot saw that too, This is the way the world ends not with a bang, But a whimper," Dad said.
Then We were outside again.
Then Tish came over and hugged Martha.
"Mrs Jones, we still haven't finished our chat," Dad said then She Slapped him.
"The hell was that for?" I said.
"Keep away from my Daughter," She said to Dad.
"Mum, What are you talking about?" Martha said.
"Always the Mothers, Every time," Dad said.
"Like the way Gran got you," I said.
"Shut it," Dad said.
"He's dangerous, I've been told things," Martha's mum said.
"What are you talking about?" Martha said.
"Look around you, nothing but death and destruction," She said.
"How's that his fault, He saved us all of us," I said.
"And it was Tish who invited everyone to this thing in the first place," Leo said. "So I'd say technically, It was her fault,"
Then there was a crash.
"Now what?" I said.
"Let's find out," Dad said then took off.
"Leave him," Martha's mum said.
"No," I said then went after him as did Martha. But when we catched up. Tish was there too.
"Lazarus, Back from the dead," Dad said. "Should've known.
"Where's he gone?" I said.
"That way," Dad said.
"The church," I said.
"Cathedral, It's Southwark Cathedral," Tish said. "He told me,"
Then we headed in.
"Do you think he's in here?" Martha said.
"Where would you go, if you were looking for sanctuary," Dad said.
"Then Where is he?" I said.
As we slow made our way up. Then Dad stopped with his sonic, That was when I grabbed both Tish and Martha.
"I came here before," Lazarus said. "A lifetime ago, I thought I was going to die then, In fact I was sure of it, I sat here, just a child, The sound of planes and Bomb outside,"
"The Blitz," I said.
"You've read about it?" Lazarus said.
"Was there," I said.
"You're too young," Lazarus said.
"So are you," Dad said.
"In the morning, the fires had died, But I was still alive," Lazarus said. "I swore I'd never face death like that again, so defenceless, I would arm myself, fight back, Defeat it,"
"That's what you were trying to do today?" Dad said.
"That's what I did today," Lazarus said.
"What about the other people who died," I said.
"They were nothing," Lazarus said. "I changed the course of history,"
"Any of them might've done too, you think history is only made with equations?" Dad said.
"Facing death is part of being human," I said. "You can't change that,"
"No, Avoiding death, that's being human, It's our strongest impulse, to cling to life with every fibre of being, I'm only doing what everyone before he has tried to do," Lazarus said. "I've simply been more successful,"
"Look at yourself, you're mutating, You've no control over it, You call that a success?" Dad said.
"I call it progress," Lazarus said. "I'm more now than I was, More than just an ordinary human,"
"There is no such thing as an ordinary human," Dad said.
"He's going to change again any minute," Martha said.
"I know, If I could get him up into the Bell tower somehow, I've an idea that might work," Dad said.
"Up there," I said.
"You're so sentimental, Doctor, " Lazarus said. I moved back with Martha and Tish. "Maybe you are older than you look,"
"I'm old enough to know that a longer life isn't always a better one," Dad said. "In the end, you just get tired, Tired of the struggle, Tired of losing everyone that matters to you, Tired of watching everything turn to dust, If you live long enough Lazarus, the only certainty left is that you'll end up alone,"
"That's a price worth paying," Lazarus said.
"Is it?" Dad said.
"I will feed soon," Lazarus said.
"I'm not going to let that happen," Dad said.
"You've not been able to stop me so far," Lazarus said.
"Leave him Lazarus, He's old and bitter, Maybe you had a taste for fresher meat," I said.
"Harry no," Dad said.
Then I grabbed Tish and Martha and Ran.
"What are you doing," Martha said.
"Keeping you out of trouble," Tish said.
"Dad, Tower," I said. As we headed upstairs, Heading for the Tower.
Then Lazarus change.
"Did you hear that?" Tish said.
"He's Changed again, Run," I said.
As we kept going.
"HARRY!" Dad said.
"Dad, What," I said.
"Take him to the very top of the bell Tower, Do you hear me?" Dad said.
"Up to the top, Then what?" I said.
"Harry," Martha said.
"What," I said then saw Lazarus "Oh right, Run,"
Then we took off again.
When we finally reached to top of the bell tower.
"Now what," Martha said.
"There's nowhere else to go, We're trapped," Tish said.
"Dad, Told us to bring him here," I said.
"So then we're not trapped, We're bait," Tish said.
"He know what he's doing," I said.
"We have to trust him," Martha said.
"Hello there," Lazarus said.
"Oh, Off with the Kenobi, Stay behind me," I said. "If he goes for me, Make a run for it, head back down the stairs, you should have time,"
"But," Martha said.
"Just do it, Both of you," I said. "Dad Come on Already,"
Then Martha get hit.
"Martha," I said. "Get away from her. DAD IT'S NOT HIGH ENOUGH," As I grabbed her hands. As it got louder But it was working on Lazarus where he fell down. Then Managed to Pull Martha up. And she hugged me.
"HARRY MARTHA!" Dad said.
"WE FINE. ALL 3 OF US," I Shouted back.
"Thanks," Martha said.
"Always," I said.
"It's your Doctor, You should be thanking," Tish said.
"I told you he knows what he's doing," I said.
"Who is he?" Tish said.
"He's the Doctor," Martha said.
"Come on," I said getting up and helped those 2 get up too then we started heading down.
Once we were down we found Dad.
"You okay?" Dad said.
"Fine, Don't you could play," I said.
"Oh, well, if you hang around with Beethoven, you're bound to pick a few things up," Dad said.
"Especially about playing loud," Martha said.
Then We managed to get back to our place.
"Something else that just kind of escalated then," Dad said.
"I can see a pattern developing, You should take more care in the future, or the Past, and whatever other time period you find yourself in," Martha said.
"It's been fun, thought hasn't it?" Dad said.
"Yeah," Martha said.
"So what do you say, One more trip?" Dad said.
"No, sorry," Martha said.
"What do you mean? I thought you liked it?" Dad said.
"I do, but I can't go on like this, one more trip it's not fair," Martha said.
"What are you talking about?" Dad said.
"I don't want to be just a passenger any more, Someone that you take along for a treat," Martha said. "If that's how you still see me, Well then I'd rather stay here," Then I elbowed him.
"Ok, then if that's what you want," Dad said.
"Right, well, we've already, said goodbye once today, It's probably best if you just go," Martha said.
"That's not what he meant," I said.
"What is it?" Martha said.
"What I said okay," Dad said.
"Sorry?" Martha said.
"Okay," Dad said.
"Oh, thank you," Martha said.
"Well, you were never really just a passenger were you?" Dad said.
Then We got into the Tardis and Took off.
"So where am I staying?" Martha said.
"Come on," I said. As we headed down to My room and went in.
"Wow, Nice," Martha said.
"Thanks," I said.
"Harry," Mel said.
"What was that?" Martha said.
"Close your eyes, Close your eyes now," I said as she did that. "Mel, Change them eyes now, She a friend,"
"Hold on a second," Mel said. "Okay, done,"
"Who Mel?" Martha said.
"Remember when I told you a few things before I found him," I said.
"Yes," Martha said.
"Well open them," I said.
Then Martha opened her eyes and saw Mel. Not before jumping into me.
"That's a Basilisk," Martha said. "Why aren't I dead,"
"Oh, I told her to switch her eyes round," I said.
"What that's Mel," Martha said.
"Yeah," I said.
"I thought you killed her," Martha said.
"No," I said. Then We got into my bed as Mel slithered her way next to us. Then I Told Martha about the 3 years before I went to meet up with Mum and Dad, Then I could see that she was tired, hell so was I. So I got something out for Martha to put on as She went into my bathroom and changed as I changed into mine. Mel Didn't want to stick around so she went through the hole back to her room, I got dad's Tardis to make for her.
Then Martha came back out and We got into my bed and Martha Snuggled up to me then I kissed her before we close our eyes.
