Fighting Destiny 6

Chapter 28 News Travels

"

Wendy and Cherry were sitting in a bar in nearby Princeville having a drink and looking for some guys for the night. The bar was all polished hardwood floors, low lights, black tables with charcoal colored club chairs and a long copper bar along one wall. There were even some hammered cooper sculptures on the walls. It was a big change from the more informal bars in Charming.

Cherry had just told her the sad news about Baby Nate dying.

"How's Jax holding up?" Wendy asked as she sipped her Chocolate Espresso Martini. Drinking it made her feel more sophisticated, but she preferred domestic beer or whiskey.

Cherry shrugged and crossed her legs hoping to catch the eye of a guy sitting at a nearby table. He was wearing a suit. She was trying to attract a different kind of boyfriend. She'd had enough of being passed around by the Sons. It had been seven years now and she still wasn't an old lady. She'd given so many blow jobs; she was getting TMJ. She could happily spend the rest of her life without another man's dick in her mouth.

"I guess OK. He hasn't been around."

"How'd the kid die?" Wendy asked.

"Just one of those sudden baby death things."

Jax was sensitive, but still a badass biker. That's one of the reasons Wendy fell in love with him. He was the perfect mix of tough and tender.

She knew Jax would be gutted at losing his son. She wasn't going to pretend to feel grief over the death of a baby she never knew. She was a lot of things but she wasn't a hypocrite.

What did this mean for her? It meant that Jax wasn't tied to pinch faced bitch Tara by a baby anymore. That was a good thing for her.

Tara was the reason her marriage to Jax failed. He was haunted by Tara and never gave her a fair chance. He blamed it on her crank use, but she'd used before they got married. She'd used more crank after to numb herself because her husband didn't love her.

And It was Tara's fault that he never loved her. A world without Tara meant that she might be able to get Jax to give her another chance and Abel was the ticket to getting back into Jax's life.

She knew she didn't have what it takes to kill someone, but she knew someone who did. It was one thing to fantasize about something like that, it was something else again to make that call. It was a line she wasn't sure if she could cross.

Charming was a small town and when a prominent neonatal surgeon's infant son dies, it hits the front page of the weekly newspaper. The article didn't have much to say beyond the 911 call coming in, an ambulance responding and Dr. Tara Knowles riding in the ambulance desperately trying to save her baby son's life. It said the tentative cause of death was Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, but would be confirmed through an autopsy. It mentioned that no funeral arrangements had been made.

Linc Potter read the article with interest, wondering what this meant for his stalled RICO/weapons case against the Sons, the Irish and the Galindo cartel. Between Juice exposing Roosevelt and his efforts against the Sons on the internet and Otto killing the nurse, everyone thought his case against the Sons was over, but his nickname wasn't "Harry" for nothing.

He'd been given the nickname because he was a wizard at taking dead cases and bringing them back to life. That whole internet fiasco with Juice had been a nightmare resulting in Roosevelt being reassigned to a desk job at another sheriff's station in the county. His ability to breathe life into this case was going to really be put to the test.

He was going to make one last attempt to bring his case back to life by squeezing the hell out of Tara Knowles. He'd hoped the idea of doing jail time and being separated from her young infant would convince her to turn on Jax. Now that the baby was dead, her motivation might be lessened.

Still, prison for a doctor and the loss of her career might be motive enough for her to turn on her husband. Marriages after the death of a child usually don't last. It might be too early for cracks to begin to show in the Teller-Knowles union, but he could hope.

He picked up the phone and contacted Detective Sprague to see how the investigation into the nurse's death was coming and if he'd made any progress into putting the cross into Knowles' hands, so they could charge her in the murder of Nurse Debbie Burrows.

Tara Knowles was the only way he could get a RICO case against the Sons, the Galindo cartel and the Irish. He didn't care what he had to do to get her to rollover on Jax Teller. This was his last and best chance to take down that criminal gang and make people safe from the weapons and drugs they trafficked and the violence that accompanied it.

His ends were just even if his means sometimes got too close to the line. He was going to succeed or his nickname wasn't Harry Potter.

Author's Note: I was reading an online article about a woman in Australia who was convicted of murdering four of her kids. Scientists are petitioning for her release. In the two girls that died, they found a genetic mutation that increases the likelihood of a breathing failure. They haven't had a chance to do testing on the boys yet. Whether this is the case in all SIDS cases, I don't think is known.

Gemma did have some basis for her belief that there was something defective about Baby Nate. Of course, it isn't his fault or Tara's and it isn't something she should be saying because it's hurtful.

Ash, I left you a note in the reviews.
