Epilogue
The Mission
FARLEY and LUKE DARMER pleaded guilty to all charges around the attempted explosion. Their attorneys highlighted their deprived backgrounds and unstable family situation as mitigating factors. The judge was unmoved and gave them both twenty-five years in maximum security prison, recommending that parole not be considered for such a serious crime. They are scheduled for release in 2039, when they will be forty-three years old.
JOEY DARMER was brought back to Oklahoma from New Mexico and charged with aiding the twins' terror attack. He refused to cooperate with police, but eventually pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to fifteen years in prison.
The FBI are pursuing Joey's former mafia contact but are said not to be hopeful of results. It's thought that this contact was the one who originally tried to buy explosives and triggered the FBI investigations.
HUGH PATRICK was given immunity from prosecution in return for assisting the Irish and British security forces. He was given a new identity and now lives in Lanzarote. His smuggling ring has fragmented and is being pursued by authorities in five countries. The Irish List is still being investigated.
DAWN LOVETT was arrested on her arrival back in Routledge from the camping trip. She was sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, to await trial for her original crime there. Shortly after her arrival in prison, she was seriously assaulted by another inmate and is recovering in a secure hospital. It is hoped that she will be well enough to stand trial in 2015.
ANDREA VASSELL moved with her family to Joplin, Missouri shortly after Dawn's arrest, after Andrea made two suicide attempts. She is recovering and has agreed to give evidence against Dawn at her trial.
ASHTON POLK was offered a promotion and the opportunity to work with a FBI task force in California, but preferred to remain in Oklahoma.
Deprived of their best hitter and star pitcher, the ROUTLEDGE BULLDOGS lost all their remaining baseball games that season.
The Cherubs
HARRY YORK served his remaining hours in the recycling centre without George, and departed for a mission in Bournemouth.
JEMIMA SUZUKI's relationship with NICK TAVISH ended after a few weeks. She said she was too embarrassed to be seen with him by her friends.
DOUGIE MCRAE remains king of computer games on campus after dominating everyone at Forza. He was given twenty hours in the recycling centre after his party got out of hand and woke up the entire floor.
JULES RICHARDS was cleared of wrongdoing by an investigation headed by EWART ASKER. The FBI's poor background investigation was criticised and the conclusion of the investigation repeated calls to appoint a full-time member of staff to advise on missions in the United States. Jules's emotional support for Letty and quick thinking in calling in the police to find George was commended.
LETTICIA KATZ (Letty) returned to campus after a week staying with INSTRUCTOR CAPSTICK and his family. She has agreed to return to missions after a four month period of recovery, and came out as lesbian to her friends. She has now set up and leads a LGBTQ support group on campus, something which chairwoman ZARA ASKER said was "long overdue" and which has gathered significant support and funding from the ex-Cherub community.
GEORGE KNIGHT's performance on the mission was highly praised by the FBI. He was credited with averting 'America's worst terrorist attack in twenty years' and became the first CHERUB agent to be awarded the FBI Bravery Medal, presented 'in recognition of an exceptional act of heroism or voluntary risk of personal safety and life'. His actions are credited with saving the lives of the fifty-five SCC personnel present on the site that night, plus those of Farley and Luke. CHERUB was less impressed, praising his bravery but criticising his recklessness in not calling for help immediately and not taking proper steps to secure his own safety. No black shirt was awarded, but George is optimistic that "next time they can't possibly say no."
