Chapter 28 The Sting
Once more Korra was with Varrick who was trying to convince Raiko to take the fight to the north.
"My answer is no. I will not sent my troops to the South." Raiko said.
"You don't understand. Unalaq is up to something. My people are suffering under his rule because he's trying to enforce his will on them." Korra said.
"Thats his right. As Chief of the Water Tribe he can do as he pleases." Raiko said.
"Not if they wanted to severe ties with the North which they did when they learned he summoned Ares 4 years ago to Kill Sean and didn't care if the South was wiped out." Korra said glaring at him.
"I very much doubt he wouldn't care." Raiko said.
"The guy flat out admitted it to everyone." Varrick said.
"Did he? Either way I still won't send my troops to the South unless it directly involves Republic City." Raiko said making Korra growl annoyed.
Thats when Desna and Eska walked in startling them.
"What are you two doing here?" Korra asked ready to fight.
"To deliver a message...Your husband is dead." Eska said shocking her.
"Wha...What are you talking about!" Korra demanded.
"A dark spirit came and attacked him and he did not resurface. The God Slayer is dead." Eska said making Korra widen her eyes in horror.
"No." Korra said.
"So the freak of nature is dead...Good. Since I'm sure Unalaq played a part in this tell him if needed I will send my forces to aid him in dealing with the Southern rebels." Raiko said shocking Korra and Varrick.
"WHAT!" Korra roared.
"Since he has something to do with that thing's death no doubt I'll support him if he needs it." Raiko said making Korra growl before she ran out. "Have the news print this out by the way. I'm sure everyone is going to enjoy this." Raiko said.
"Oh boy this isn't gonna end well." Varrick said.
Later
Asami was not in a good mood these last few days. She had tried to sell her Mecha-Tanks on the South but the ship transporting it was hijacked by the North making it even more difficult to make money for her company which was close to going under.
So currently she and Mako were heading to Korra's house to get some help.
"I don't think asking for their help is a good idea right now. Raiko completely pissed them off" Mako said not wanting to be here.
"We need a new plan since Reznov, Julia and Luke went back to Avalar to get some help and..." Asami tried to say before she and Mako heard Korra crying inside. "Korra?" Asami said concerned opening the door before finding her on her couch curled up before she rushed to her.
"Korra? Whats wrong?" Asami asked before she opened her eyes showing they were red from crying so much.
"Sean's dead." Korra cried out shocking them.
"What? What are you talking about What happened?" Asami asked holding her close.
"Eska and Desna showed up at Raiko's office. They said a dark spirit attacked him and he never he came back up. I know they weren't lying since they have no reason to. Unalaq clearly sent them to kill him and his dark spirit did it." Korra cried as Asami held her close.
Mako however had a look of guilt on his face for some reason.
"Korra I am so sorry." Asami said holding her close.
2 days later
After Raiko had told the Papers about Sean's Death he had expected everyone to be happy even throw a parade or so.
To his complete shock however it had the exact opposite reaction.
The people turned on him in a heart beat calling him a vile monster who was no better than Amon for his cruel and vile words he used on Sean and his wife. His supporters backed out from contracts he made and even his own troops were questioning him.
The people of Republic City had completely turned on him and he had destroyed his reputation in just a short amount of time. Some were even beginning to suggest he be thrown out of office.
Currently Korra was with Asami in her home trying to get past her loss.
"Only three months into my marriage and I already lost him." Korra said holding a cup of tea.
"Korra...You don't actually know if he's dead. He has survived a lot worse in the past." Asami said.
"Where else could he be? They have no reason to lie about that." Korra said.
Before Asami could say more Mako walked in.
"Sorry to interrupt but Asami needs to head to the police station. The captain of her last shipment is giving his report." Mako said.
"Ok." Asami said getting up with Korra.
"Why don't you stay here for a little bit." Mako said.
"I...Fine." Korra said sitting back down as the two left.
When they arrived at the station they were behind the viewing glass.
"Is there something you wanna tell me?" Asami asked Mako with a frown.
"What are you talking about?" Mako asked confused.
"Ever since you found out what happened you have been avoiding Korra at every turn and thats not like you. I would think you would want to be around her to help her through this." Asami said.
"I...Just think she needs her space. I know in a way whats she's going through and so do you" Mako said quickly.
"Mako, I know when you're lying and I'm not in the mood for it. What is going on?" Asami asked wanting a straight answer making him sigh.
"I'm the one who told Raiko about your plan to use his troops without his say so." Mako said shocking her.
"YOU WHAT!" Asami yelled.
"I didn't know this was gonna happen. He asked me a direct question and I couldn't risk him finding out and losing my job. If I knew I would have kept my mouth shut." Mako said.
"How did you even know! You weren't even with us when we talked about it." Asami demanded to know.
"Bolin told me. Look I feel guilty enough about it as it is." Mako said.
"Mako, you need to tell her Korra the truth now.." Asami said.
"Are you out of your mind! She'll kill me once I tell her." Mako said.
"Korra is in pain because of you. She was already stressed out enough because of whats been happening in her tribe. Now you made this happen. If you don't tell her I will before Raiko can to get the last laugh." Asami said before leaving making him sigh.
Meanwhile
"So Kruger is finally dead. Well done." Unalaq said to his children.
"We're not really sure if he's actually dead since something isn't right. If he was truly dead why haven't the gods inside him come back? Ares and the others from the last 4 years." Desna said.
"Hmm. It could be because they were sealed within him that they need time to take form." Unalaq said.
"Or?" Eska asked.
"He could still be alive out there. The question is though if he's unharmed or mortally wounded. I'm assuming the later." Unalaq said.
"He's survived worse before." Desna said.
"Yes. But never mind that now. It's time I acquire the Avatar." Unalaq said.
"Then why didn't you send us after her?" Desna asked.
"Because I don't think it would work. Your strong like a I taught you to be. But Korra has also had training from Avalar and her now dead husband making her more stronger than she would be. So I'll summon an old foe to bring her to me." Unalaq said as he pulled out an ancient scroll.
"What is that?" Eska asked.
"10,000 years is a long time for certain items to arrive in the four nations. This one in particular can bring someone back from the dead." Unalaq said before opening it as it glowed.
Thats when one of his guards screamed in pain as his body broke down before reforming into a new one.
One of which that was familiar.
One of the Furies.
Megaera.
"I live." Megaera said pleased.
"Because of me. I have a task for you and it also deals a blow to Kruger in death. You will bring me his widow here. Alive. Once I'm finished with her you can do whatever you please." Unalaq said making her chuckle.
"It will be a pleasure." Megaera said leaving.
"Why summon her? She failed already." Desna said not seeing why her and someone else like A god.
"If I had tried one of the other two it would be more problematic than it was worth. I'll deal with her when she returns." Unalaq said.
Meanwhile
"You have a plan to find out who's attacking my shipments?" Asami asked as she sat with Korra.
"A sting operation. I was thinking we'd set up a bait ship, take it out into the open ocean, and capture whoever attacks it. That way we finally find out if the North is behind this or someone else." Mako said.
"That actually might work." Korra said.
"Let's do it." Asami said.
"It's not that easy. For the plan to work, we need the police, and Beifong already said no. I'd ask for Reznov, Luke and Julia but they are still at Avalar." Mako said.
"We can make it work." Asami said.
"Just the two of us?" Mako asked.
"No the three of us. I'm gonna help you." Korra said.
"Korra you don't really have to..." Mako tried to say.
"Look this will keep my mind off this for a while. Besides you've both been helping me through this since you found out. I need to pay you back." Korra said as Asami glared at Mako when Korra didn't see her.
"Ok first we need a ship I can ask Varrick for one." Asami said.
Later
Soon a ship was filled with dummy crates for the sting op.
"The ship is loaded up so we can head out." Asami said.
"Not yet we need some extra muscle." Mako said.
"So just get your brother." Korra said making him frown. "Oh no don't tell me you two are having issues?" Korra asked.
"He's become caught up in his fame for that stupid movie Varrick is making him do." Mako said.
"Oh my god you gotta be kidding me." Korra said seeing the problem before snickering a little.
"What?" Asami asked.
"When Sean and I first met Bolin he was trying to win me over using his skills " Korra said giggling remembering how they first met. "I also seem to recall someone being a major league prick when we first met." Korra said smirking at Mako making Asami giggle.
"Are you ever gonna let that go?" Mako asked.
"Nope." Korra said making her and Asami burst out laughing while he sighed.
"Nice to see you're getting back to your old self." Asami said making her smile lightly.
"So who do you wanna get? Reznov, Luke and Julia are still at Avalar and Turok is still with Tenzin's family." Korra said.
"I really hate to say it but we are gonna have to ask the triple threats to help us out." Mako said shocking them.
"SAY WHAT!" The two yelled in shock.
"Look I can't go to Beifong because she won't listen to me. And the others are not here. I don't have a choice." Mako said making them sigh.
"All right lets just get this over with." Korra said.
Later
Soon enough the three and the triple threats were out at sea to where the ambushes happened.
While Mako was waiting for the ambush Korra was leaning on the railing holding her former engagement necklace before a single tear ran down her eye.
"You ok?" Asami asked holding her close.
"No. I never should have opened that portal. None of this would have happened if I didn't and Sean would still be alive." Korra said.
"Korra...You don't know if he's actually dead. He's survived a lot worse over the years more dangerous than one Dark Spirit." Asami said making her sigh. "How exactly did you two meet anyway? You never told us." Asami said wanting to get her mind off this.
This made Korra smile softly remembering that perfectly clear.
"Shortly after I was discovered as the new Avatar the temple rose out of the ground. My parents went inside to investigate with Tenzin and the White Lotus. Me and Stayed with Katara at the house. When they came back he was wrapped up and placed down. I didn't know they found him in there at the time since I was too young to understand. When he woke up we just went outside and played." Korra said laughing making Asami giggle.
"Sounds like you two already had a powerful bond." Asami said.
"We did. Shortly we also found Naga when we got stuck in a snow storm...Which was my fault. Then my uncle showed up and I noticed Sean was acting strange when he left but brushed it off since I didn't know at the time he tried to kill him. I never knew back then how cruel he could be. I knew back then his wife committed suicide a few weeks after my cousins were born. I just figured she had problems. But now I see why she did it. She was trying to get away from him the only way she knew how." Korra said.
"Theres a marriage I don't ever want to be in. Lucky for you Sean would never treat you horribly." Asami said making her smile softly.
"For the next 8 years we grew up together. I did my Avatar training and he learned sword training from the White Lotus and Sokka. Then one day some of Set's monsters came and attacked us and Sean discovered his ability to breathe white Fire. When we told my parents about it they told us the truth...Well part of it anyway. How they found Sean in his mother's dying arms and took him in. Then Unalaq showed up and reveled the rest but twisted the facts. He left shortly after that to find out who he was." Korra said.
"Must have been hard on you and your family." Asami said.
"It was especially for me and my mother. For 2 years I trained even harder to hopefully find him. Then he showed up again and told me the full story. Unalaq also showed up and tried to get us to turn on him but it failed and Sean mocked him by reminding him why his wife killed herself. It sent him into a rage and gave him that scar on his right eye." Korra said.
"I always wondered where he got that." Asami said.
"Sean beat him and then later fought killed Ares but got badly injured and took us to Avalar to heal. And when we got back Unalaq tried to have him killed but failed. Sean found out he was the one who summoned Ares and he admitted it. We threatened to tell the tribe what he did unless he left us alone. He did...For a while." Korra said.
"Then you two showed up in Republic City and I know from there." Asami said making her smile.
"Yeah. I knew I was starting to have romantic feelings for him when he got back. Now 4 years later we got married. And Enjoyed every single day." Korra said making Asami frown knowing she had to tell her the truth.
"Korra...Theres something I need to tell you." Asami said.
"What is it?" Korra asked before Mako rushed to them.
"We've been double crossed. We have to get off this ship." Mako said leading them to a boat only to come face to face with the Triple threats.
"And just where do you think you're..." They never got to finish as Korra air bent them off the ship before they got into a boat and left quickly.
"The hell was that all about?" Korra asked making Asami frown before widening her eyes.
"Oh no." Asami said in worry
They made it back to her warehouse and found it completely empty of everything.
"Looks like someone knew about our plan." Korra said before seeing Asami's defeated look.
"I'm completely ruined." Asami said before Korra held her.
"Asami we're gonna fix this. You helped me when I needed you the most. I'm gonna find who did this." Korra said about to run off as Mako closed his eyes.
"Korra wait." Mako said stopping her. "Theres something I need to let you know." Mako said.
"What are you talking about?" Korra asked.
"I was the one who told Raiko your plan to use his troops without his permission." Mako said making her freeze before narrowing her eyes dangerously.
"What?" Korra asked extremely angry.
"He asked me a direct question. I couldn't risk losing my job if he found out I knew." Mako said.
"Let me get this straight. You sold us out to that prick and your the reason that my husband...Is dead?" Korra asked.
"I'm so sorry. I just didn't want to lose my job." Mako said.
"And what about what I wanted? I was this close to getting those troops to help my home from Unalaq. And now because of you my people are suffering longer because you had to be selfish and tell him." Korra said glaring at him.
"Selfish? I'm not the one who started all of this in first place. You always said you hated Unalaq and yet you worked with him regardless of what he did to Sean in the past. I was just trying to keep my job because I like what I do in helping people." Mako said ticked off by that remark.
"Easy both of you." Asami said as the whole place shook.
"Whoa...Easy Korra I didn't mean..." Mako said.
"You knew...Didn't you?" Korra asked Asami as Mako hid her behind him incase she did something rash.
"Mako told me at the station. I was going to tell you earlier before we got double crossed." Asami said making her close her eyes as tears escaped her eyes.
"Don't ever talk to me again. I never want to see you two...EVER!" Korra cried as she ran off.
"Korra!" Asami yelled.
"Let her go. I don't blame her for saying that. I screwed up." Mako said with his head down as she held him.
Korra ran back at her home before she found Naga and Dojo.
"Whoa you ok?" Dojo asked.
"Just get me out of here. Fly to the Air temples." Korra said.
"All right if you say so." Dojo said getting bigger before flying off with both of them.
Korra cried as Naga whimpered before rubbing against her making her hold her head.
"Sean...I'm so sorry." Korra said.
Meanwhile
Sean slowly began to open his eyes seeing he was on the beach somewhere before what were known as Fira Sages stood over him making him widen his eyes.
"BACK OFF!" Sean yelled pulling out his blades.
"It's okay, we're here to help you, Lord Kruger." One of them said.
"Who's...Who's Lord Kruger?" Sean asked.
"Uh oh." Mimir said.
"How did you get on our island?"
"I...Don't remember." Sean said before collapsing.
