It was now the beginning of September and the school year was starting.
"I'm kinda nervous, I don't know why…" Adam said, fixing his tie for the 5th time.
"Relax, honey, you're gonna be alright! You can come back home for lunch, I'll have something for you."
Adam chuckled.
"What?"
"Nothing, it's just that we're like a couple in the 50s, I go to work, you're pregnant at home making lunch for me."
Jessica laughed. "Get outta here!"
Adam's studies were going great, he decided he was going to go into a finance major after all and even made the varsity hockey team. His firm gave him the option to do part time work to keep up his work experience. He was coming home late every day, exhausted.
"Aw, honey, are you sure you wanna do all those things at once?"
"I gotta, it'll be easier finding work after college and I wanna play."
"Okay, baby." She let him rest his head on her shoulder and stroked his hair.
Adam put his hand on her tummy. "Hey, baby, I love you and I can't wait to see you soon!"
Jessica raised an eyebrow and pursed his lips. "You're talking to the baby?"
"Yeah, I read somewhere they can actually hear you in there." He started singing softly. Suddenly, there was a movement. They both jolted upright. "Was that a kick?!" Adam almost screamed.
"Yes! Oh my God! It's kicking!" Adam continued singing to it as the baby gave a few more kicks. "I can't believe he's gonna be here in just 3 weeks!" He said.
"Jess, I think we should get you to the hospital, you're due almost any day now, it's better to be there in case it comes early or something."
"Yeah, I agree, let me just grab a bag and we can go."
The two went to the hospital to have her settled in. Her parents came to visit, too. They made sure she had a private room and the best care.
"Guys, you should all go home, there's still 2-3 days to go, you can't stay here until then, they're gonna let you know when it's time."
"Alright, dear, make sure you message every day!" Amanda said before her and Jack left.
"I don't wanna leave you." Adam pouted.
"Babe, you gotta go, you have classes and stuff, go!" He nodded and gave her a kiss before leaving.
The following day at around 4PM, Jessica started having contractions. The hospital staff called her parents an Adam who rushed over there.
"Oh my God, this really hurts!" Jessica cried out.
"I know, honey but you gotta push through this!" Amanda tried to console her.
"Why can't I have an epidural?!" She yelled as tears were rolling down her cheeks.
"They said the anesthesiologist is held up on another delivery, sorry honey."
"Are you fucking kidding me!?" Jessica started crying.
Adam's stomach was in knots, he couldn't bear to see her suffer and he felt helpless knowing there wasn't anything he could do.
"Alright, I want only one person in here with the mother, everyone else please wait outside." The doctor said in a stone cold voice.
"Alright, we'll wait outside, you stay with her." Jack told Adam as him and Amanda walked out.
Adam held Jessica's hand and stroked her hair as the nurse instructed her to push. Screams filled the room as Jessica gathered all her strength to push the baby out.
"Okay, the hardest part is done!" The doctor said as the head came out. "Here come the shoulders, the arms, legs, there he is!"
The baby's cries filled the room while the nurse took him and washed him before wrapping him in a blanket. She handed the baby over to Jessica who was now shedding tears of joy. The medical team decided to give them some time alone.
"He's so beautiful." Adam said through tears.
"I know! Look, he has your eyes!" The baby's big innocent blue eyes wandered around for a bit before he fell asleep.
Jack and Amanda walked in. "Everything alright?"
"Yeah, come in you guys!" Jessica called out.
Amanda started crying as soon as she saw her grandson and took him into her arms.
"So what are you guys gonna name him?" Jack asked.
"We haven't really thought about it yet."
"Did the doctor say how long you have to stay in the hospital?"
"Yeah, he said a day max, just so they can make sure he's okay."
"Okay, honey, we're gonna give you some time to rest.
"I'm so proud of you." Adam whispered and kissed her before they all left. He called Connie to let her know about the baby and told her she could visit the day after.
The following day, Jessica woke up at around 10AM while the baby was still sleeping. Connie came over to visit and was extremely emotional.
"I can't believe you have a baby! He's so precious! Have you thought of a name?"
"Not yet, we're probably gonna do that once we get home, we want it to be meaningful but we'll see."
"He has Adam's eyes!"
Jessica smiled. "Yeah."
"I can't believe how small he is, you could just eat him up!"
"Connie, can you help me get ready, the doctors said they can discharge me soon."
"Yeah, sure." Jessica got dressed and fixed her hair when the doctor came in to check in on her and the baby.
"Feeling better?"
"Yeah, I still have some pain but not too much."
"Yeah, that's normal, take these twice per day."
"Okay, love, I'll go now then, I'll see you soon?" Connie gave her a kiss on the cheek and left.
When they got home, the baby started crying.
"Aw, he must be hungry." Jessica said and sat down at the couch to feed him.
"You know, I was thinking, do you wanna have your mom staying over for a while, at least until you recover?"
"Oh no, babe, that's not necessary, I love mom but she's gonna drive me nuts!"
"Okay, whatever you want, babe. So, what are we gonna name this little fella?"
"How about Michael?" Jessica rubbed his head.
"Are you a Mikey?"
"I like it!"
"You know, part of me really wanted to name him Charlie…" She said.
"Me too...but I feel like that would be a constant reminder of ...you know."
"I know, babe, it's okay. Hey, we should facetime everyone to let them know!" The baby had finished eating so Jessica went to take a shower. Adam held him in his arms and looked into his eyes. Mikey's big orbs fixated on him as his tiny hand wrapped around his father's finger. Adam was suddenly overcome by a feeling he'd never experienced before. It hit him. He was a father.
The following week, they had Michael's christening and Connie took her godmother role pretty seriously. The little guy was thankfully a quiet and peaceful baby and didn't give them too many headaches.
