Burn

The tinder caught the instant that the Major first set eyes on

The annoying barracks' Colonel with the irritating smile.

A vague suspicion sparked by his remarks, his whole demeanour;

Not the cowed response expected, whether brass, or rank and file.

The heat increased with every odd event which plagued the Stalag;

Every missing high official, every bridge and train destroyed,

Every secret rendered useless, every scientist defected,

Every time he was accused of being deeply paranoid.

And now that fire was burning, with the fiercest white-hot flame.

As he faced the firing squad,

He knew precisely who to blame.
