We're over
Oikawa Pov
I'd ruined it. It was all over now. The thoughts kept repeating themselves as I sprinted away from the blonde's house. Whenever I slowed down, Suzumi's crying face popped up in my head, so I kept running.
I was absolutely mortified. I should've known it wouldn't work. She literally told me she'd never fallen in love. I couldn't change that with a kiss. In fact, she hated the kiss enough to start crying.
She was trying to tell me something before I left but I doubted it would be something good. She'd probably slap me. She'd cuss me out and tell me to get the hell out of her house and out of her life. So I'd done her a favor and walked away myself.
I'd been so careful these past weeks, expertly hiding my feelings. I don't know what part of me thought this was a good idea, but obviously it had been wrong.
As much as I hated every second that came after the kiss, I loved every moment I held her in my arms. Her body fit so perfectly against mine, it was like it was made to be there. At least I got to make out with her. If she decided to completely shut me out of her life, I could at least dream about the memory.
Though, as much as I tried to rationalize my actions, I couldn't be satisfied with that. Not having the blonde in my life would break my heart. I had to find a way to undo my mistakes.
When I pulled myself out of my thoughts, I saw that my feet had taken me back to school. More specifically, the gym. Whenever I needed to blow of some steam of think, I'd come here and practice my serves. Thankful that the gym was empty on Mondays, I walked up the stairs to the locker room to change.
'My, my, look who we have here.'
I groaned at the sound of the familiar voice as I walked into the gym. Sure enough, the two boyfriends were leaning against the wall, matching smirks on their faces.
'Can we not do this today? I'm kind of tired guys.'
'If you're energetic enough to play volleyball, you're energetic enough to talk to us.' Matssun said.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, 'Fine, whatever. How did you guys know I would be here anyway?' I asked, tying my shoes.
'Because you always go here when you have something to think about.'
'Or after you've done something stupid.' Matssun added.
'Ah yes, almost forgot that one.' Makki said, 'Thanks babe.'
I kept quiet, having nothing to retort.
'Woah, you okay man? It's kinda creepy when you don't have a snooty reply.'
'Don't you guys already know what I've done? Isn't that why you're here?' I said, feeling annoyed at their played innocence.
'Yeah, but if the rumors are right, you just scored yourself a cute girlfriend. So we don't understand why you'd be upset about that.'
'We came to tease you about it and ask why you didn't think to tell your bestest of friends about this development.'
I sighed miserably, 'There is no development. It's all a lie.'
'I see.' Matssun said thoughtfully, 'So you're pondering who could have started the rumor?'
'No, I started it.'
I would have laughed at their confused faces if my situation wasn't this dire.
'But… why would you do that?' Makki asked.
'It slipped out okay? Can we move on from this topic?'
'No.' They replied in unison.
I huffed in frustration and tried to turn the attention away from me, 'How did you find out about this anyway?'
'It's the talk of the school.'
'I hope Suzu-chan has good life insurance, because tomorrow is not looking good for her.'
'As for your question, one of your exes came to us to ask us about it. The pretty one from our year, Makki, what's her name again?'
'Oh shoot, uhm,' Makki snapped his fingers a few times, as if that would help him remember, 'I think her name was Aki.'
'Right, that's the one.'
'Now that we've answered your question, you have to answer some of ours. So stop trying to change the subject. Why tell such a lie?'
'Yeah, if you're going to spread a rumor, at least make it one that's going to last for more than a day.'
'It was a mistake!' I exclaimed, done with their careless attitude.
'Does Suzu-chan know already?'
'No, but she will. It's like you said, Suzumi will find out tomorrow, slap me in the face and end our friendship.'
The friendship might've ended already, but I was holding onto a sliver of hope that it hadn't.
'You won't know until you ask. You can prevent her from finding out tomorrow by telling her today.'
'About that, I, uh, I did something stupid. She probably doesn't want to see me right now.'
'You're not making this easy on yourself, are you?'
'Tomorrow then,' Matssun said optimistically, 'what will you tell her tomorrow?'
'I- I don't know.'
'Then we'll help you figure it out.' Makki said.
Matssun nodded, 'That's right, so why don't we sit down and you'll tell us everything that happened. Including this stupid thing you did. Then we'll come up with a plan. Don't worry. We got you.'
The first chance to talk to her came later than expected. It was the day after my talk with Makki and Matssun. I hadn't seen her before class, nor during our first break. I wanted to ask Chi-chan about her whereabouts, but the icy look on her face made it clear she wanted nothing to do with me. She'd been sending me death glares the second I passed through the gym doors for morning practice. Iwa-chan was with her, he didn't look very happy either. They were a scary couple, that's for sure.
Then, finally, I spotted her walking to a vending machine during lunch. I took a deep breath, I'd made a plan with Makki and Matssun, it was going to be okay. Determined to make things right, I walked over to her.
'Hi.' I said timidly.
'Hello.'
The lack of cheerfulness made it clear she was indeed mad at me. 'What have you been up to?' I asked awkwardly.
'Oh, you know, just running away from your fanbase. They've been having a real fieldtrip with this rumor you've been spreading.' She replied drily.
I cringed at her dull tone. So she found out about my lie. I should've known this would happen. I'd just hoped she'd stayed in the dark a little longer. Long enough for us to make up and laugh about my silly mistake.
'Listen, I can explain.' I said.
'Yeah? You'll explain everything to me?' Suzumi asked, looking skeptic.
Her skepticism was well-placed, because I sure wasn't planning on telling her everything. This was not the right time nor place to confess my feelings. For now, I just wanted everything to revert back to how it was before. My hesitance must have given me away, because she shook her head and sighed.
'Look, I'll tell everyone I'm a big, fat liar. I'll get rid of the rumors.' I said desperately, 'We'll forget about what happened yesterday and everything can go back to normal.'
While dissipating the rumors was part of the plan I made with the odd duo, forgetting the kiss wasn't. But we could do it, we could forget all about it, as long as I would get my friend back.
A look of hurt crossed her face, 'No Kawa, we're not doing that. For you, yesterday's… events might be a mistake you want to forget, but I'm not planning on forgetting my first kiss.' She said as a soft blush dusted her cheeks. The pretty pink didn't do anything to erase her sad features, 'We had a great thing going on, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want it back. But you've done me dirty Oikawa. You kissed me without my permission and then ran away the second things didn't go as planned.'
'What do you mean, planned? All I did was kiss you!' I replied heatedly. She made my feelings sound like something nasty.
'It might be nothing to you, but I planned to give it to someone special!' She shot back. 'Why didn't you stay? We could have talked about it.'
So I wasn't special enough, huh?
'You're painting me as the villain here. Don't act like you weren't going to curse me to the moon and back if I'd stayed!'
My mind was screaming at me to stop arguing. This was far from how I thought this would go. We were making things worse, not better.
'Who knows? You didn't stay long enough to find out!'
We were practically yelling at this point. I was vaguely aware of the small crowd that was starting to form around us, but paid them no mind. I could think about my image once this was over.
'If you hated it that much, why didn't you slap me or something?'
'I tried to push you off, but you didn't listen!'
'Well, I backed off after that didn't I? I'm trying to fix things!'
'You're trying to fix things by pretending nothing happened. You're a coward!'
'Well at least I'm trying something! I don't see you coming up with ideas!'
'This is your problem, not mine.' She said coldly.
'You're an insufferable prat Suzumi. You're mad at me not doing anything and you're mad at me trying to make things right again. You won't let me explain either! If you don't want to be my friend anymore, just say it to my face!'
She narrowed her eyes at me, 'Alright then.' She spat out venomously, 'Consider our friendship over.'
Yes, sweet, sweet drama! I really liked writing this one.
I know I've been portraying Makki and Matssun as pranksters, but I do think they'd be really helpful and nice when they want to be.
I hope you still like Oikawa and Suzumi after these past few chapters. I know they've been a bit of a rollercoaster. I've always found that people that feel hurt do stupid things and argue instead of cooperating, so I wanted to do that in this story too.
Also, practical note: next week will be the last week before I take two weeks off writing. The last test week of the schoolyear is coming and up I want to really focus on that. My apologies, I hope you understand.
See you again next week~
