Mya's POV:
I jumped into the air sensing flying towards me from a rooftop. I twisted around in midair and caught the shield. I landed and turned to see Steve and Bucky standing at the end of the street. I knew they had jumped down from a rooftop. I dropped the shield on the ground. Everyone's eyes were on me trying to figure out what my next move was.
"Mya," Steve said. His voice was full of worry. "What did they do?"
I stomped on the shield and sent it flying into the air. As it came back down towards the ground I swung my leg into the air and kicked it back towards Steve. He caught it in his hands but the force that I used to kick it sent him flying backwards. Steve had managed to stay on his feet but he looked between the shield in his hands and me.
"Be careful," Hayward warned with a small chuckle. "She's the strongest of the six."
Steve hurled his shield at the man and I shot a string of web at the flying saucer knocking it off of its course. My eyes and mind were clouded with fog from the serum but that didn't stop me and my abilities. I watched as the shield flew back onto Steve's arm.
"What are you talking about?" Bucky shouted at Hayward. "What did you do to her?"
"I figured you out of all people would recognize those words," Hayward said through his teeth. "The mighty Winter Soldier, the best of the best."
"You didn't," Bucky growled. "You didn't do that to her."
"Find out for yourself," Hayward said with a shrug. Steve threw his shield at him again but this time instead of simply knocking it out of the way I pulled it back to me.
"You dropped this," I muttered holding up the weapon. I could feel Wanda's eyes burning into my back but I ignored them. I chucked the shield into the air over the tops of buildings.
I turned away from them and towards Wanda. The serum could do a lot but it couldn't stop my heart from breaking at the sight of the girl in front of me. Her beautiful green eyes only held red in them and tears streamed from them tracing paths down her face. She held her hands up in front of her and red energy swirled around them.
"I don't want to hurt you," she whispered. "But I will if I have to."
"Cute," Hayward muttered. I turned to look at him but he wasn't looking at me. With the flick of his wrist guards with their guns trained on us appeared.
I took everyone's moment of shock to my advantage. Knowing that I wouldn't be able to do what I needed to do I went after Steve and Bucky. I lunged toward Steve first and was able to get a few good punches on him. Bucky finally realized what was going on and threw a punch at me with his metal arm. I grabbed his wrist and threw him into Steve. They flew backwards but red energy caught them before they came in contact with anything. They were quickly able to regain their balance and before I could do anything more I was lifted into the air.
I turned my head slightly and saw Wanda raising her hands into the air. Struggling to break free I was pulled towards her.
"Mya," she said through her teeth. It was taking a lot of energy to keep me in place. "You need to stop whatever this is. I know you're still in there somewhere."
I grunted and was able to move one of my arms. It was quickly put back in place as I was pulled even closer to Wanda. She knelt down and put her face near mine.
"Please," she whispered.
I watched as she stuck her hand out and it brushed against my forehead. A loud gasp escaped my lips as the fog in my eyes and mind disappeared. I opened my mouth to say something but was stopped when I heard a click.
I didn't need to turn and see that Hayward had a gun held on me.
"Step away from her," Hayward warned. Wanda stood up and looked at him. All of the energy that had been trained on me flowed back towards her. Surrounded by the power she looked towards the man across the street. "I along with twelve other fully trained gunmen have our weapons focused on the girl," Wanda tilted her head to the side. "If you even think about attacking it will only take one shot and she's gone."
Wanda clenched her fist and took a deep breath. As she exhaled the energy around her slowly disappeared. Two men dressed fully in black appeared next to me and lifted me from the ground. Their hands wrapped tightly around my arms but I didn't care. I knew what was going to happen when Hayward took me back to my prison. I hung my head in defeat and didn't look Wanda in the eyes. I couldn't bring myself to.
"You can't keep her from me," Wanda said calmly. "I will find her."
"I'm sure you will," Hayward said with a grin.
More guards dressed in black appeared on the street level. Two walked towards Wanda and grabbed her by her arms. I stood behind Hayward watching the scene. My eyes met Wanda's but she quickly looked away.
"If you hurt her any more than you already have," she warned. "I will not hesitate to kill you."
"Oh I'm not worried about you," Hayward told her.
"And yet I'm the one without the guns?" Wanda shot back tilting her head.
"Maximoff," Hayward's voice was cold and cut through the air like a knife. "I would be careful with your words. I believe you are the one that just used your powers on a few dozen innocent people."
Wanda glanced at me once more and I saw in her face she had finally come to a decision. I watched as she threw the guard's hands off of her and energy shot away from her knocking everyone on the street down. I stumbled to my feet and looked around me. It looked like Hayward had been thrown backward farther than everyone else. Glancing down at my feet I saw the gun that had moments before been in his hands. Scooping it up I held it in front of me aiming towards the man I had grown a deep hatred for. He started to get to his feet when he looked at me.
"Don't move!" I shouted at him. I thrust the gun forward trying to warn him that I would shoot.
"Mya," he said slowly. Laughter filled his voice. "Do you really think you can kill me?"
"I'm the one with the weapon," I said through my teeth.
"Yet I have the armed guards ready to shoot with my command," he scoffed.
There was a noise next to me and I quickly glanced to my side. Peter stood tall staring at the man on the ground before us.
"I took care of that problem," Peter said quickly. "You don't take my best friend from me and then walk into my city expecting to get away with it."
I kept my arms extended in front of me and I could tell that Peter knew that I was terrified of the man in front of me.
"Even if you do kill me," Hayward said with a hideous grin. "I will never truly leave you. Those months you spent locked away in that cell. The same cell that Allie-"
"Don't!" I shouted at him. "You have no right to say that name!"
"Do it, Mya," Hayward beamed. "Pull the trigger! Release your demons!"
"Mya," I felt Peter's hand on my shoulder. "Put down the gun. This isn't who you are. You don't have to do this."
My hands shook with the weight of the weapon. I wanted to listen to Peter but I couldn't force my arms to move.
"Kill me," Hayward sneered. "You know you want to do it!"
"Stop!" I shouted. Silent tears ran down my cheeks. My breathing was shaking as my chest heaved up and down. "Just stop."
Peter moved his hand from my shoulder down towards the weapon in my hands. My body tensed and Peter's hand stopped moving when he noticed that something was off.
"Mya," Peter whispered. "Please just drop the gun."
The sound of a helicopter echoed in the distance. I quickly snapped my head to the sky trying to find where it was coming from. Peter tried to place his hand on my wrist but when I felt his fingers brush against me I turned towards him. He held his hands up as I pointed the weapon straight at his chest.
"Get back!" I shouted at him.
"I'm not the enemy, Mya!"
"Get back, Peter!" I hissed through my teeth. "I don't care who you are right now! You need to get back!"
Laughter bubbled in Hayward's throat as he watched the scene that I had created.
"Mya, please," Peter begged.
"Back up Peter!" I told him again. "I'm not going to tell you again!"
He opened his mouth to protest but my feet were kicked out from under me. I hit the ground hard but didn't let go of the weapon in my hand. My head was spinning but I managed to turn towards Hayward. I could tell that he was beginning to get up. I held my arms in front of me trying to focus and get a good shot.
The gunshot rang through the alley and Hayward's body collapsed in front of me. The hood of my suit blew off of the top of my head and I heard the sound of the helicopter blades above me. My hands shook as I set down the weapon and I stared at the terrible man in front of me. The man that I had killed. I had killed people before but this time it was different. Hayward was right. I could kill him but he would never truly die. The memory of him would surge through my veins because he was the one to create and use the serum on me.
There was a hand on my shoulder and my body tensed at its touch. I didn't need to look behind me to see that it was Wanda.
"We need to leave," she told me. The sound of the helicopter continued to pound in my ears. "The media is above us capturing every angle of this but they will never see it from your perspective. As far as they know you just killed the head of SWORD."
"I need to run," I spoke slowly and softly.
"We need to run," Wanda corrected.
"No," I responded shaking my head. "Not this time. I can't ask you to go with me this time."
"But I'm going to."
"Someone needs to be there for the twins," I told her. After a few moments of silence, I finally got the courage to look up at her. "And this time it can't be me. My hands are stained with blood. They can't look up to someone like me anymore."
"Mya," she whispered. "I-"
"Wanda, I'm sorry but I need to leave," I interrupted her grabbing her hand. I brought it to my lips and a tear trailed from my eye onto the back of her hand.
"I-I can't breathe without you," she stammered.
"There will be a time for us to run away together again," I said softly. "There will be a time for us to make it up to each but not this time."
"Do you remember what you used to say?" she blurted out. "What did you say to Tony while we were locked away?"
"Yes, I-"
"Nothing safe is worth the drive," she repeated what I had said all those years ago. "The boys have someone to look up to. They have a lot of people to look up to."
She placed both of her hands on my cheeks and I pulled away from her in fear.
"I-I'm sorry," I stammered when I realized what I did. "I-I didn't me-mean to. It's just-just an old habit."
"I don't know what they did to you, Mya," she said softly. I felt her eyes trying to pry me open but I wouldn't budge. "We can get through this together."
I looked over her shoulder and saw people forming in the street. I looked past them and at the house with the large 23 on the front of it.
"Do you trust me?" I asked quickly, turning my attention back to the woman in front of me.
"What kind of-"
"Will you hurt me like they did?" I asked, interrupting her. Her green eyes met mine and filled with tears.
"Never," Wanda answered, staring straight into my eyes. "I will never hurt you. I love you too much."
I nodded and looked down at the ground.
"I trust you," I responded softly. "You can come with me."
