Hello Everyone,
I have finally returned. I know, I know, it's been a long time. Real life called and I had to take a step back and finish a few things. That plus a little bit of
writer's block held me back. I should be a bit more consistent with uploads in the future but you never know. Anyways I hope you are ready for this chapter,
let's get to it.

The two of them are much closer than they were in the anime, allowing for a positive relationship to bloom
Ash's mother has always been rather sickly
Ash has also tapped into his aura more than he had in the anime.
Ash was very excited. He had just defeated Stephan and advanced to the final battle of the Unova league. Walking back to meet his friends, the young man was greeted by Iris with a hug. "I knew you could do it Ash. Just one more to go and you are the league champion" she squealed.
"Yes, your unique sense of battling has produced a flavor that overwhelms everyone" Cilan gushed as Iris released her hold on the Pallet Town native.
"Thank you, both of you have been with me the whole time." the trainer responded. "Now to see who I will face in the championship". The second semi-final was set between Cameron and Trip. Both trainers had hardly been tested over the length of the tournament so Ash was hoping to see if he could discover any weaknesses during their upcoming match. As the trio were making their way towards the Pokemon Center, a buzzing could be heard coming from Ash's belt. The trainer looked and saw that he had received a message on his Xtransceiver telling him to call Professor Oak's lab as soon as possible. Ash bid his friends farewell for the time being, telling them he would be back as soon as he finished his call.
Making his way to the Pokémon Center, Ash dialed Professor Oak's number into one of the phones and waited for him to pick up. "Hello Ash." his voice sounded as his face popped up on the screen.
"Hey Professor, you wanted me to call you?" spoke the trainer. Ash looked and saw that the professor had a rather sad look on his face.
"Your mother had one of her episodes and is currently in the hospital." Oak revealed.
"Dear Arceus, is she okay?" asked Ash.
Oak held up a placating hand "she will be as long as she gets treatment". Ash nodded and was told by the professor that his mother was extremely proud of him. After that, Ash told Oak that he would call him later about exchanging Pokémon once he found out who his opponent is going to be.
Saying goodbye to the old man, Ash hung up the phone and made his way to the main lounge of the center where Iris and Cilan were watching the match. "So how is it going?" the trainer asked, taking a seat on the couch next to Iris.
"Both of them are on their final Pokémon" Cilan explained. Looking at the screen, Ash saw that Trip had his Serperior out, while Cameron had out a Lucario.
"Ah, I guess Cameron's Riolu evolved during the battle" Ash assumed.
"Yeah, and good thing too." said Iris.
"Why is that?" the Pallet Town native asked.
"He was backed into a corner for a long time." the dragon woman explained. Ash nodded and watched as the two Pokémon clashed. Serperior had used and Iron Tail, while Lucario used a Brick Break. The two moves collided, causing a large plume of smoke to obscure the vision of the two Pokémon. When the smoke cleared the grass-type was left standing, meaning that Trip was the winner. Ash let out a huff of annoyance as the trio got off the couch to go get some dinner. The three trainers made sure their plates where full before sitting down at one of the dinning hall tables. As the young man began to eat in silence Iris sensed the doubt in her friend's mind.
"Don't worry Ash." she spoke up between bites, "you'll do great tomorrow". Cilan agreed with her and began to spout some nonsense regarding taste-buds and flavor. This elicited a small laugh from Ash, who told the duo that his mother was currently in the hospital back near Pallet Town.
"Arceus Ash, I hope she's going to be okay." Iris said concerningly.
"Professor Oak said she'll be fine, as long as she receives the right medicine for her treatment." explained Ash.
Nodding, Iris began to think about how her time with Ash might be ending soon. When she first met him, he seemed rather childish. However, as they continued to travel, she had discovered that this was mostly an act. Iris found out exactly what happens when you anger Ash turning that happy-go-lucky attitude into one of seriousness. This change made him defend his friends from any trouble disregarding any dangers to himself in the process. "How dreamy" she thought, nodding along as the trio finished their meals. Ash excused himself from the table and brought Pikachu with him, leaving his two friends to stare at his empty seat. "He still doesn't seem himself" Iris said aloud.
"Perhaps you should go after him" suggested Cilan.
"Do you think that would help?" Iris wondered.
"Of course," Cilan began "Afterall, I know how you feel about him".
"Wha, what are you talking about" Iris stuttered.
"Please Iris. It's very easy to see that you are infatuated with him." the gym leader responded. Both of your flavors complement one another so well, I'm surprised you haven't already told him how you feel".
"You know I really wish you would stop making food references." sighed the young lady, getting out of her chair.
"Just think about it." Cilan responded, before doing the same and heading to his room for the night.
Iris began walking back to her room. "I really should let Ash know how I feel about him." she said to herself. Turning around, the young lady walked towards the balcony of the Pokémon Center which overlooked the lake.
Little did she know, Ash was having identical thoughts. The young man sighed, "Do you think I should really reveal my feelings now or wait until after the tournament" he asked his partner. The electric type gave him a shrug, he was not experienced in this and could not help his friend.
"Hey Ash." a familiar voice came from behind. The young man turned his head to see Iris stand next to him. "Did you get your Pokémon ready for tomorrow"?
"Yup" he replied, the p sound popping. "I contacted Professor Oak again after dinner and we exchanged then". What Ash didn't tell Iris was that his mother had begun receiving treatment in the hospital let alone the fact that she was in it in the first place. The two trainers sat in silence as the stars twinkled in the night sky.
"Arceus, can this get any more romantic?" wondered Iris. "Ash what do you plan to do after the tournament"?
"Well, if I win, my short-term goal is to start training for matches against the Elite Four".
"And in the long term"?
Ash took several seconds to think about his answers. Looking out at the beautiful sky above, he wondered if this was the opportunity he was looking for. Taking his time, he told the young lady that he would probably go and explore the islands off the coast of Unova, having heard that they could be harboring some powerful Pokémon. Once again, the duo was left in silence, however this time Iris decided to take a chance.
"Ash I wanted to…" Iris was suddenly interrupted by Axew's cry as she felt some movement in her hair. Axew popped out and began to yawn, signaling to the trainer that he was tired.
"Looks like it's time to head to bed." Ash laughed, signaling for Pikachu to climb on his shoulder. The electric rat did just that and Ash motioned for the girl to follow him back inside.
"Maybe tomorrow" thought Iris as she nodded and went indoors as well.
The pair said goodnight to one another and departed to their separate rooms. Once inside, Ash began to think about his relationship with Iris. The young man had grown very fond of her since they started traveling together. Familiar feelings began to stir within and Ash knew that it meant he was attracted to her. Unlike previous times with Misty and May, Ash felt more confident and wanted to act on these feelings. "Tomorrow after the battle" he thought, before drifting off to sleep. What they didn't know was that the next day was going to change both of their lives. Ash was woken up by a buzzing sound coming from his Xtranceiver. Rubbing his eyes and turning to his clock, he saw that it was currently 5:30 in the morning. Deciding that it could wait until later, he ignored it and started to go back asleep. Then it buzzed again and again to the point where Ash couldn't ignore it any longer. "There better be a good reason for calling me this early in the…" Ash was interrupted by somber Professor Oak.
"Ash your mother passed away about an hour ago." the elderly man revealed.
"Wha…" Ash sat in bed completely stunned. "How? you told me that as long as she received her treatment, she would be okay"?
"She would have been fine but they accidentally gave her the wrong dosage." revealed Oak.
"Accidentally nothing, they killed my mom." Ash raged, tears now leaking down his face. "I never even got to say goodbye". The young man was now sobbing and Oak knew that nothing he could say would change what had happened. However, he knew that he had to get Ash through this.
"You know your mother was so proud of you when you made your first league in Kanto" he began, getting Ash's attention. "She would rave on and on about her little prodigy and yesterday before she had her attack, she told me that she knew you would win and would always be cheering you on". Ash nodded but continued to cry for what seemed like hours before finally running out of tears.
"I have to win for her" he let out.
Oak smiled and told the young man that they would wait for him to hold any sort of funeral or ceremony. Ash thanked the professor and hung up. He sat in bed for nearly half an hour and stroked Pikachu as a way to calm himself. Luckily the battle wasn't until 5pm so he had enough time to go back to sleep and refresh his batteries. When Ash woke up from his slumber it was around noon. Sighing, the young man checked his Xtranceiver and saw that what had happened the night before was not a dream. He then noticed that he had received several messages from Iris asking him where he was. Ash sent a message telling the girl that he was fine and went for a walk to clear his head. He also mentioned that he would see them later. The trainer knew he had a very tough task ahead of him, especially with the loss of his mother. He was hoping that being with his friends would help him deal with the tragedy. Speaking of which, his mind went back to what he was thinking about before all of this happened. Ash determined that the feelings he had for Iris were not going to go away and he needed to at least try to confess to her.
The afternoon flew by and Ash was ready to head to the arena for his championship battle with Trip. He had prepared a team of Snorlax, Krookodile, Heracross, Kingler, Charizard, and Pikachu. The young man knew that everything he had been through, all of the battles he had fought, were solely for this moment. With a sad smile, he put on his hat and headed to the arena with Pikachu on his shoulder. The arena for the final was different from the others Ash had previously fought in during the tournament. This one had the trainers enter through a tunnel (shaped like the letter I) underground which split off to the opposing sides of the battlefield. "It's now or never" Ash said to himself as he entered the tunnel.
The trainer made his way to the first turn of the tunnel and went around the corner. Despite trying to persevere through his mother's death, his spirit could not handle what he saw on the other side. Iris was currently locked in a kiss with Trip, her back pushed against the wall. Ash was stunned, the girl who had traveled with him for the past year (and someone he was about to give his heart to) was currently making out with his most hated rival. This, along with his mother's death made Ash feel that he was on the verge of a mental breakdown. "Arceus no!" he cried, drawing attention to himself. Ash wasted no time and bolted from the scene, his mind focused on getting him out of here and away from Iris. "Charizard fly home now." He called out, releasing the fire type from its pokeball. Charizard had heard everything going on outside and grabbed his trainer in his arms. The fire type wasted no time, taking off into the sky and shielding his trainer from the wind while Pikachu hung on to his brethren's neck. "Thank you Charizard" Ash whispered before emotion overwhelmed him and he slipped into unconsciousness.
3 Years Later
"Another meeting, Seriously?" Iris sighed, looking at the tablet in front of her.
The girl had grown into a young lady over the past three years and it all started when Ash disappeared. Trip had won the Unova League by default and had gone on to challenge the Elite Four. He had made it to Alder but could not overcome the champion. Iris had never forgiven the boy for what he had done to her and had started her plan for revenge by taking over the Opelucid Gym. After a year as a Gym Leader, she decided to enter the league herself with the hope of crushing a returning Trip. She would do just that, only losing one Pokémon. Once that was over, she went on to defeat the Elite Four and challenge Alder for his position as champion of the Unova region. It was an amazing battle and one that would have made Ash proud had he been there. The clash had resulted in her winning and becoming champion. Her victory was celebrated by her village, who had thrown her a huge party. Despite all of this Iris still felt empty inside. Ash had never shown up ever since that day three years ago. "Although I can't blame him for some of that." she said to herself. After Ash had disappeared, Iris had gone to Pallet Town to confront Ash. However, when she got there, she found out that he his mother had died and he had buried her. She asked Professor Oak where he went but the elderly man didn't know and would only receive messages from Ash telling him that he was ok or what Pokémon to send him.
Shaken from her thoughts by an alert on her Xtransceiver, "TEAM ROCKET DESTROYED BY UNKNOWN TRAINER. LEADER REVEALED TO HAVE BEEN GIOVANNI BERNORLI." the screen read. Iris opened up the article and saw that Team Rocket had been hiding in Viridian City for ages. The new champion (whose name remained unknown) had exposed the organization and took down Giovanni all by himself. This brought Iris back to the time when Team Rocket had crashed her vacation with Ash and Cilan in Undella Bay. They had tried to tell the police that Giovanni was the leader but they had no evidence so he had still been a free man, until now at least. She shook her head "I've got to stop thinking about Ash" she let out, going back to her tablet. On the tablet was an email from Goodshow regarding the annual Champions Meeting. It was an idea the man had come up with in order to assure cooperation between the regions so that no other organization could take over like what had been happening. To his credit it had worked, no other organization other than Team Rocket had been making trouble for the past three years. Now that Giovanni was arrested there hopefully wouldn't be any more trouble for a long time. Speaking of champion's, the new Kanto champion had been an enigma to the other regions. Said champion had defeated Lance just after their last meeting and took over the position despite never having appeared to win the Kanto League. Lance went to being an Elite Four member, while Koga replaced a retiring Agatha. "Maybe I'll finally get to see who this new champion is." wondered Iris as she got out of bed to get ready for the day. However, she would have to wait another month for that to happen.
One Month Later
Iris had flown into Undella Bay for the Champions Meeting a couple of days early and was currently relaxing in the sun on her beach chair in a bikini. The weather was beautiful this time of year and Iris wanted to make the most of it before the conference started. Luckily the Pokémon league provided each champion with an oceanfront villa which meant she was merely a few steps away from the beach. Her style had also completely changed, with her long hair tied in a ponytail, after becoming rather self-consciousness about wearing it down. Currently, she was reading a book about Dragon Pokémon when a loud sound took her attention away from its pages. Down the beach appeared to be a Pidgeot dodging electrical attacks. Iris set her book down and got out of her chair. As she got closer to the action, she saw that the flying type appeared to be battling a Raichu. There also appeared to be a young man standing off to the side. The man raised his arm, signaling for both Pokémon to stop. "Excellent work you two, you both have grown immensely since the last time we've trained like this." he said. "I see we also have a visitor".
Iris flinched as the person's tone changed from inquisitive to seriousness. This stranger wore a mask covering their entire face. The mask was mainly black but contained two streaks of blue near the cheeks. The eye-holes barely revealed anything except brown eyes. As far as clothing went, he wore a black coat and matching pants. This gave him a very sinister look and gave Iris a very creepy feeling. "So, what does the champion of Unova want with me?" the man asked, practically snarling.
"This is a restricted area, only those who are authorized by the Pokémon league are allowed to be here." Iris responded channeling her champion's voice.
"Is that so" drawled the stranger, "you don't seem to be in any position to stop me the way you are now". The man motioned at Iris with his hand. It took the champion several seconds to understand what this action was referring too. Iris immediately began blushing and stammered out something about not underestimating her. The man let out a bellowing laugh, "Soon champion soon". A whistle immediately followed causing the Pidgeot to use Hurricane on the sand below.
"Wait come back glugh…" Iris coughed as the sand was blown in her face by the gust of wind. She was able to shield the rest of the dust devil with her arm but by the time it ended the man and his Pokémon had disappeared. "Who was that" Iris said to herself as she got the rest of the sand out of her eye. After looking around for several moments, the champion decided to cut her losses and go back to her book. However, as she did this, she couldn't shake the feeling that she would see that strange man again.
Two Days Later
It was finally time for conference. Iris had woken up bright and early and made sure she was prepared. Normally she wouldn't do this but the woman felt that she had to make a good impression on the new Kanto champion, whoever they were. After eating a nice breakfast, the young lady made her way down to the town's convention center. She saw Goodshow, who motioned her over to a room. Opening the door revealed a spacious area with a large circular table in the center. It also appeared that she was not the first champion here as Cynthia was already sitting at the table.
"Cynthia how have you been? I haven't seen you since the last meeting" asked Iris as she approached the table.
"Great, I would have visited but I haven't had time to come to the bay." the blonde responded. "you know how it is, the life of a champion".
"Of course." Iris laughed, We should definitely catch up after the meeting". "I'd like that." answered Cynthia.
"I see you ladies are doing well." a voice came from the door. The Hoenn Champion Wallace strode into the room.
"Looking fabulous as always Wallace." spoke Iris, "How is Winona"?
The water-type trainer let out a chuckle "she is doing great. In fact, we are expecting are first child".
"Oh my gosh, when?" Iris squealed, she loved children, especially babies.
"Should be in about three months." the man replied. Both champions congratulated him and watched as Goodshow entered the room with the Kalos Champion Diantha.
"So we are just waiting on the Dual Champion." explained Goodshow.
"Speaking of the Dual Champion." Diantha began, "Who are they"?
"Yeah you've kept us in the dark for nearly a year" Iris added.
Goodshow sighed, "They wanted to remain anonymous in order to clean up Kanto and Johto's scoundrels".
"Wait are you telling me that the Dual Champion is responsible for taking down Team Rocket?" asked Wallace.
"Yes I am." a voice came from the door. The three champions all turned to see a figure.
"YOOOOUUUUUU!" Iris yelled, pointing at the figure.
"Nice to see you again Ms. Champion" laughed the figure, taking several steps into the room.
"What the hell is this man doing here?" Iris yelled at the chairman. Cynthia immediately rushed over and tried to calm Iris down.
"I would like to know that myself chairman." prodded Wallace.
"Well you see…" "I am the Dual Champion." Goodshow was interrupted by the man who now made his way to the table. The three other champions looked on in shock but it was confirmed by Goodshow himself.
"What is your name?" Wallace asked.
"You may call me Satoshi" he replied. "So." the man said, taking a seat next to Wallace, "What do you say we get this conference started". Iris gulped and the four champions began what they had come here to do.
6 Hours Later
Iris was fuming. She had just returned to her villa from the first day of the conference and things had not gone well for her. Every time she had put forth a suggestion the Dual champion either convinced the others that it was a bad idea or came up with a better suggestion. It wasn't something like her region was a mess or looking bad in front of the other champions, but it still bothered her immensely. It irritated her so much in fact that she felt that she needed to blow off some steam. Iris fed her Pokémon then changed into her swimsuit and headed down to the beach to clear her mind. She went straight for the ocean and began to swim out to the buoys. She had picked up swimming after Ash's disappearance as a way to cope with the sadness and keep her mind busy. It basically became the therapy she needed. However, ever since she became champion there was less time for her to do this. Almost immediately Iris felt her mid at ease. Her arms drove forward into the water as she calmly glided through the bay's surface. Soon she had reached the first buoy and started to head to the second one. When Iris was about halfway there, she felt a sharp pain in her left leg. The champion looked down but saw that there was nothing on her before feeling the exact same pain affecting her right leg too.
"How could I be so stupid to swim right after eating" she thought, beginning to tread water with her hands. Although she was on the surface, Iris began panicking and started yelling for help. However, her left hand soon succumbed to cramps as well. Now unable to keep herself afloat in the rough water Iris began to be dragged under the waves. She tried valiantly to fight and get herself back to the surface but it became too much for her to overcome. "So this is how I die." she thought as her body floated towards the ocean floor. "Ash I hope you can forgive me, wherever you are". The last thing Iris saw was a shadow blocking the sun as unconsciousness took her.
With Satoshi
Satoshi had been meditating in his villa when he felt a disturbance in his aura. Opening his eyes, he looked through his window and saw Iris struggling in the waves. "Poor champion doesn't know how to swim" he let out a wicked chuckle. However, as he watched Iris, he felt her panicking more than she should be. Now noticing that something was extremely wrong, Satoshi darted out of his villa still fully clothed and took off towards the ocean. He then saw the Unova champion sink beneath the waves and ran even faster. As Satoshi got to the shoreline, he channeled aura into his feet. Using this technique, the man was able to run across the surface off the water and avoided wasting his energy on swimming. When he got to the area that Iris had sunk, he dived in after her. Pressing a button on his mask allowed him to turn it into a scuba mask and re-breather. Satoshi saw the champion unconscious on the seafloor and swam down to get her. "This doesn't look good. I need to get her up to the surface as fast as possible." He thought.
The man grabbed Iris beneath the shoulders and kicked off the bottom. It felt like an eternity to traverse the 10m between the ocean floor and the surface. Once again, Satoshi channeled aura into his feet and climbed out of the water. Cradling Iris, he rushed back to shore with urgency. Once he got to the beach, he set Iris on the ground and took off his mask to begin CPR. After giving 30 chest compressions, he tilted Iris's head back and performed two rescue breaths. "Please don't be dead." he whispered, going back to compressions. About halfway through the second set, barely opened her eyes.
"Ash?" she thought, getting a look at the man's face who had saved her. Suddenly she went into a coughing fit, hacking up the water she had swallowed. Satoshi appeared to panic and quickly put his mask back on his face. By the time Iris stopped coughing it was secured.
"You should never swim alone and risk yourself like that." Satoshi let out.
"I cramped up from the food we had for lunch. Do you seriously think I don't know how to swim." bit back the Unovan native.
"Well, you shouldn't be swimming so soon after eating." he the Dual Champion shot back. "You would have destabilized an entire region all because you couldn't wait for your food to digest". A pregnant silence permeated the air. Iris knew that Satoshi was right.
"Wait I thought I saw him" Iris said to herself. "Satoshi I once had this friend who would more often leap before thinking about consequences." she began. "He was someone I cared deeply about but ended up betraying".
"Why would you betray someone like that?" asked the dual champion clearly a bit miffed at what he was hearing.
"I was caught off guard and forced into it." she whispered.
Satoshi had had enough of this and whipped his mask revealing his face, "What do you mean you were forced?" he yelled. Iris looked over and took the young man's face in.
"Ash is that you? she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Hey Iris it's been a while" he replied neutrally.
"Ash I've been looking for you for three years, where have you been?" questioned the Unova girl.
"You don't get to ask any questions until you tell me why I found you making out with Trip." he yelled back in response. As soon as the words came out of his mouth Ash regretted them. Iris had begun to tear up but swallowed her pride and began to tell Ash exactly what happened before the incident.
Flashback, Three Years Ago
Iris had been looking for Ash all day. The young man had not showed up to breakfast which was extremely uncharacteristic of him. Eventually she had given up and decided to wait until his battle with Trip. Making her way down to the entrance a half hour before the battle she waited for Ash to arrive. 15 minutes soon passed and Iris was beginning to get worried. She heard footsteps and turned to see Trip was making his way down the hallway.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, a harsh tone in his voice. Iris gave him the stink eye in response. "No seriously, what are you doing here?" pestered the young man.
"If you must know, I'm waiting for Ash." she grunted.
Trip tilted his head to the side "Oh, and why is that?" he drawled, inching in closer to Iris.
"Wouldn't you like to know" she bit back. The two of them began to hear footsteps approaching.
"When it involves getting an advantage on Ash it becomes my business." Trip responded. Before Iris could think of a response, she found herself with her back to the wall and being kissed by Trip with her back to the wall.
"Arceus no!" both humans heard a voice cry. Moving her eyes to he left, Iris saw that Ash had come across the scene and was clearly misinterpreting what was going on. As her friend ran, Iris elbowed Trip in the gut and chased after Ash with the hope of clearing up this misunderstanding. But by the time she got back outside Charizard had already lifted off. "Dragonite won't listen to me so there's no way to catch up." she observed with sadness. That sadness quickly turned into anger at Trip for what he pulled. She tried storming back inside but the gate to the trainer's entrance closed, locking the poor girl out.
Back in The Present
"Wait so you weren't making out with Trip?" asked Ash.
"No, I wasn't." she replied somberly.
"I'll kill him." Ash whispered, knowing that Trip was long gone and probably in shame after his xenophobic outburst during his latest league battle.
"I tried looking everywhere for you afterwards so I could explain" Iris spoke, tears flowing freely down her cheeks. "I visited Professor Oak's lab and he told me what happened to your mother as well as the fact that he didn't know your current whereabouts".
"Yeah, I was off the grid for a while after my mom's death." admitted Ash. The two of them sat in silence for several moments. "Now that my secret is out we might as well let our Pokémon say hello to each other".
Iris looked up and began blushing, "Let me just go and get changed before that" she responded, having just remembered how little clothing she currently had on. Ash never even noticed that as he had been so focused on saving and berating Iris for her stupidity.
"Ok, meet me back here in about half an hour" Ash told her before saying that he had to get changed out of his wet clothes as well.
The two split up and Iris made her way back to her own villa where she showered. While in said shower, she thought back to how she felt about Ash before he disappeared. "I never changed. I still love him after all of these years." The woman wondered if she should reveal how she felt to him. Drying her hair, Iris grabbed her Pokémon and made her way down to the back of Ash's villa. "Well, I guess I'd better knock." she said to herself. As she reached out, the door opened to reveal Ash with his Raichu on his shoulder. Said Raichu immediately jumped off of his trainer's shoulder and into the woman's arms.
"When did Pikachu evolve?" she asked Ash who told her that he didn't want to talk about it. Deciding to stay away from that topic, Iris released her Pokémon out onto the sandy beach. Raichu immediately went over to Haxorus who greeted the electric type with pure joy.
"I see Axew is no longer the youngling he once was".
Iris let out a small chuckle, "Yeah he really grew up in the last two years". Ash made his way over to the rest of Iris's team in order to check their health. She still had her Excadrill and Dragonite (both of whom seemed to finally listen to her) but it was her knew Pokémon that caught his attention. Her Lapras looked extremely strong and had taken residence in the bay. She had also trained a Garchomp, who was currently nestled in the sand next to Excadrill. Her final Pokémon was a Salamence who was hovering protectively around his trainer. "Salamence it's okay, Ash isn't going to hurt me." Iris laughed, stroking the blue dragon.
"Where's Emolga?" asked Ash, releasing the rest of his Pokémon.
"She's at my parents' house, my mom wouldn't' let her go when I brough her home." responded the Unovan lady.
The two trainers continued to talk about each other's Pokémon. Iris marveled at how strong both Ash's Charizard and his Garchomp were, while Ash marveled the beauty of her Lapras and Haxorus. While this was going on, they took the time to feed all of their Pokémon. Eventually the sun had started to set and Iris was thinking of heading back to her villa when her stomach grumbled.
"You hungry too?" Ash asked her.
"Just a bit." she responded, embarrassed at the sound her stomach made.
Ash laughed and told her that he had an extra dinner in his villa if she wanted to eat and continue to catch up. The woman agreed, returning her Pokémon to their pokeballs while Ash did the same. As the duo entered the villa, neither of them noticed a blonde-haired woman spying on the two of them and cheering through binoculars. Iris followed the Dual champion into the kitchen where she watched Ash grabbed two containers from the refrigerator and place them in the microwave. While the meals were being heated up Iris asked Ash where he had been training. When he told her Mt. Silver, the woman let out a gasp in surprise.
"Mt. Silver! I thought you had to be part of the Pokémon Rangers to even step foot there"?
"I've done a few favors with the rangers in the past so they pulled some strings to let me train there." Ash revealed. The timer for the microwave went off and Ash got out of his seat and retrieved the pair of meals. The duo began eat, with Iris pressing Ash with more questions about his training. Eventually she mentioned that his mother had passed away due to an accident. Ash snapped his fork in half at this, catching his fellow champion's attention. "Don't say that." he growled.
"What do you mean? Didn't they accidentally give her too much medicine?" asked Iris curious as to why Ash was acting so defensive.
"Because I found out what had actually happened." spoke the Kanto native. Iris leaned in and listened as her friend began his tale. "Everyone at the hospital had known our family for years and knew exactly how to treat my mother's condition. So, I looked at the hospital records and saw that a new employee had been on staff for the day that she died and he had been the one to give my mother the medication".
"Surely that's just a coincidence." gestured the woman, believing it only to be that.
"I thought as well until I looked at the employee's records." he responded.
"What did you discover?" asked Iris. Ash took a deep breath and resumed, "First his resume had a few holes in it that I found out, but the second was more obvious". "I recognized him as Butch from Team Rocket." Ash revealed.
"You think Team Rocket killed your mother!" Iris exclaimed.
"I don't just think, I know." the dual champion responded with a growl.
"Why, why would they target a woman who lives in such a small town like Pallet?" questioned Iris, her voice increasing in pitch.
"I received a message from an unknown number on my house phone saying it was revenge for stopping them from acquiring Meloetta." Ash revealed.
"Is that why you disappeared after her death"?
"I did it to protect those I still care about and to one day get revenge".
Ash then went on to explain how he had gotten in contact with the Pokémon Rangers who then allowed him to train at Mt. Silver and monitor Team Rocket's activities. After a year and a half of training he contacted Lance who had offered to give him a shot as his championship since he had never been able to finish what he had started at the Unova league. Ash agreed to it as long as the battle was away from cameras and he could hide his identity. The Dragon Master agreed and the Pallet Town native was victorious. He then explained how he used his new position as the champion to monitor Team Rocket and with the help of Lance, finally trap and lock them all up barring Giovanni who he had killed personally. By the time he was closing in on the end of his tale late afternoon turned into night. Finally, Ash's story came to an end the Unova Champiion was finally able to speak her mind.
"Something still doesn't make sense. Why just you? she asked.
"What do you mean"?
"Cilan and I played just as big of a part in protecting Meloetta as you did. So how come they didn't go after any of our families?" she questioned.
Ash sighed, "From what I recall, Team Rocket looked into doing something like that but there were to many underlying issues"
"Underlying issues"?
"First, both of you are living in Unova, which means you were mostly out of reach." he began. "Cilan is one of the gym leaders which means killing anyone of his family would cause the league to investigate which is the last thing Giovanni wanted". Iris nodded along, it made sense that Team Rocket would stay away from a place where they suffered a huge defeat. "You are a member of the Dragon Village, a wealthy and influential family. Giovanni would be insane to mess with you". Once again, Iris acknowledged that Ash had made very good points, No one messed with her family and got away with it. "That just left me. A trainer from a small town, no power or family to hide behind, the next town over from Viridian City".
Iris frowned and let a few tears drop onto the table. "I'm sorry this happened to you Ash". While she was speaking her mind was running wild with thoughts of telling him that she loves him. "I wish I could have been there to help you".
That reminded Ash of something. "Speaking of being there, what were you doing in the trainer hallway before my battle with Trip"?

Ash had made sure that no one in Kanto or Johto would ever suffer like his mother did. A small smile crept onto Iris's as Ash lifted Delia onto his shoulders. The Dragon Master knew that as long as her family stuck together, she would be happy. Something no title could provide.

really good set-up for why Ash and Iris got together as most of my chapters seem to just through them in without thinking. The idea of using a wrong dosage
of medication actually came from one of my great-aunts (although hers was truly an accident). In the future would you all prefer having shorter chapters but
