It takes her time to pull herself back from her script, process Itachi's question, and mentally recalibrate the order of her tale.
She suppose she can skip some stuff for now.
"Uchiha Sasuke... What happens to Uchiha Sasuke is the result of what happens to Uchiha Itachi."
She arrange the events in her mind, "Because of constant mistrust against the Uchiha clan, the clan is pushed to resort to a coup."
"What?!" Shisui slams a hand on the floor in front of him.
"Uchiha Shisui and Uchiha Itachi... Itachi becomes ANBU, a member of team Ro, under Hatake Kakashi. At that point, he is already attending the meetings conducted in the... Naka shrine, I think. But being strongly against it and having tried to talk his clan out of it multiple times, the Uchiha have lost faith in him, they send Uchiha Shisui to spy on him. Unbeknownst to the clan, Shisui was of the same opinion with Itachi and they report the state of affairs to the Hokage. I don't know the details, but they try to work on it with the Hokage but everything fails. Konoha is on the verge of a civil war. Uchiha Shisui, deciding that he will do anything to keep Itachi and Sasuke safe at all cost no matter how, goes to the Hokage to propose to use his Mangekyo to make his clan members give up on their plan."
She gives them a moment to digest that. Shisui is the one to speak.
"What happens after?"
"Shimura Danzo believes that the Uchiha will eventually do it again even if they're stopped the first time. He also believes that Shisui doesn't understand the true potential of his Mangekyo. Confronting Uchiha Shisui, he and his agents are easily subdued but he used Izanagi and managed to take Shisui's eye. Shisui may have managed to escape, or was maybe saved by Itachi returning from a mission. He gives his one remaining eye to Itachi and commits suicide by jumping from the cliff overlooking the Naka river in front of him to awaken Itachi's Mangekyo. He succeeds. Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu."
"... What happens after?" Shisui asks grimly.
"The clan believed that Itachi killed Shisui, there is some altercation, and in the end, Itachi, having run out of options, is given the order that will later come to be known as the Uchiha Massacre, somehow being able to track down Obito who introduces himself as Madara to help him. Uchiha Sasuke is the sole survivor." Nagi blinks, "I think Itachi had a girlfriend too, the first one he killed via an overpowered genjutsu where they lived in the world he wanted. Itachi became a missing nin and was invited into the Akatsuki, partnered with Juzo of the seven swordsman who will later die defending him when they face up against the fourth Mizukage who has been under either Obito or Madara's Mangekyo the entire time. The Akatsuki, or more like Obito who is following Madara's plans and therefore Black Zetsu's manipulations, plans to harness all the bijuu to resurrect Otsutsuki Kaguya -not that they know that part- and trap the world in Infinite Tsukuyomi where everyone can dream a world exactly how they want it. Among other things, Itachi recruits Deidara of Iwa by catching him in a genjutsu and beating him. Eventually, years later, Sasuke is the teammate of Haruno Sakura and Uzumaki Naruto under Hatake Kakashi. Itachi puts his former ANBU captain in a torture Tsukuyomi and goes after Naruto who is travelling with Jiraiya in search of Tsunade to convince her to become the Hokage after Orochimaru kills the Sandaime Hokage in the Suna-Oto invasion-"
"Stop! Okay, stop! Fuck, stop right there!" Shisui exclaims, looking sick.
If possible, Itachi looks worse, his back to her, on his hands and knees, the first time she'd seen him so unrestrained.
"... That's horrible." Itachi says, almost to himself, trembling a little.
Nagi watch them sympathetically, "I vomited and fell sick when I first received the memories."
It's the best she can give them.
Her sleep that night is restful, like a weight off her chest.
(Which can't be said for the other two.)
XxXxXx
Because they are ninja, and they are ninja prodigies, of course they remember all the names.
Nagi finish her story the next day (Yuki-sensei and Yoji are out again, this time to greet some noble and to escort them around in the town over).
She doesn't mention her past life. Just the story. Not because she wants to deceive them, but it's unnecessarily divulging too much information. Like when your teacher asks you about your project and you tell him about what you ate and how annoying your brother was yesterday.
She can't think how that can be useful to them.
"I don't even know where to start."
Shisui chew on a barbeque, eyes on the ceiling. They're in a luxury room. Partly for the privacy but also because the table here is low, otherwise Nagi would have to sit on a high chair.
She sits beside Itachi and across Shisui.
"I'm not sure how dependable all these are." Nagi speaks, after all, there was still Boruto and with these sorts of things, there would be plot twists she wouldn't have been aware of. And not even mentioning those different timelines, "So I'd really like for us to confirm things before we do anything. That is, if you believe me?"
"... it's... well, it's hard to believe, but you know too much confidential information that you'd have no way to know otherwise. And really, in this kind of world, what can you say is outlandish."
"Peace, huh..."
They turn to Itachi, who seemed to have moved on from the circumstances of his story death way too quickly.
He looks at Nagi, "Uzumaki Naruto achieves peace?"
"Yes." She nod.
"That's..."
"That's great. But now that we know all these things, the very moment Nagi received this memories, things changed." Shisui tells Itachi.
Nagi reach over to take some barbeque from the stove. It's not obvious immediately, but between the two, Itachi is the optimist. They're both realist, just...
Maybe because Itachi is younger. Or maybe Shisui is a control freak and would rather have as much of the variables under his influence, and tends to distrust the ones that aren't.
"But we'll try, right?" Nagi implores them.
Shisui's gaze softens and he nods, with a small smile, "Yeah, we'll try."
Itachi pick out a sizzling slice of meat with a faint quirk to his lips.
"Isnt it funny though."
"What is?" Shisui asks him.
She really wants to know what part of this Itachi can consider funny.
"In the story Nagi tells. You, me, and her... we're all just side characters. And the ones who die in the end too. Our roles can't be said to be small, but... we're not the main characters and yet here we are. Nagi is the one to awaken all this memories, you're the one she chose to tell this to, and I'm the tag along."
"You're not a tag along, Itachi." Shisui reassures him in an intentionally overbearing manner.
Itachi rolls his eyes, "I know I'm not literally. So stop touching me, your hands are greasy."
Nagi is impressed. It took her some time to go back to normal but these guys are taking it well.
Either it's because their horrible ends hasn't hit yet, they don't see their characters as themselves, or it's just because nothing she said is an immediate 'right now' dilemma.
Nagi pick some vegetables.
"Nagi."
She look up and they're staring at her in concern.
"Yes?"
"Are you alright?"
"Um, yes? Why?"
"Your tragedy..." Itachi says, "It couldn't be prevented."
Her tragedy. It goes without saying.
Her tragedy is her father's death.
Itachi's tragedy is the murder of his clan. Shisui's is Danzo's thievery.
And all that comes after because of their actions.
"It's done. There's nothing I can do now. I just want... like Shisui said, the one responsible for it. Maybe Danzo. But someone, undoubtedly."
"I see." Shisui nods, a resolve building in his eyes, "I'll do my best. Your faith in me... it's honestly heavy, but I won't fail it."
Her eyes widen.
Itachi's pats her head -her hitai-ate secure over her cursed seal after she's shown that her knowledge isn't absolute, it can be changed- smiling.
"You made us out to be such amazing people in your story," pitiful too, "Hopefully we'll measure up to some of those."
Nagi can't believe they actually believed her.
And when the hell did she begin looking up to them that she can so easily believe their words.
Tears run down her face.
Relief.
It was so difficult drowning alone in the feeling of being too small to change anything big. She wasn't the main character, and like them, died before they saw something meaningful for the world at large.
