Chapter 29- Strange Behavior
A/N: This part of the story coming up is for "The First Commandment." My character along with Teal'C would know about the device Jonas wants to use for protection for the sun as she has the Tok'Ra DNA and, ergo, would have seen it many times being used.
Laura stood in the gateroom as Walter showed her how to use the computer to dial out. It was not quite like the DHD device on most of the planets. Walter promised that he would talk to Hammond and ask if she could pick the next planet SG-1 would go to. The Stargate then came on.
"Uh, are we expecting anyone this late at night?" Laura asked Walter as he sat in his chair.
"No. I don't think so. Hmmm. It's SG-9," Walter said as the team's signal came up on the screen.
"SG-9? They were supposed to check in tomorrow. I wonder why they're call so early and why they're calling. Dad says Captain Hanson has a vain, pompous personality. They wouldn't call unless they had to," Laura said. Just as quickly the signal was gone and the Gate shut down.
"We'd better get General Hammond in here," Walter said.
They all stepped through the Gate and for once it wasn't night when they stepped onto a strange planet. The other relief was that it looked like a forest. Between forest and desert, Laura had come to the conclusion that she preferred forest to desert as on desert planets, it would be meltingly hot and on a forest planet, the trees provided shade.
"For a planet with a UV radiation as high as this one's supposed to have, the plant life seems to be doing well," Daniel said.
"Great. That means the trees won't protect us from being badly burned," Laura said with groan.
"Apparently, Abydos was the exception, not the rule, as far as trees are concerned," Carter said, rubbing her hand on her face.
"Well, that makes sense. I mean, in order for a planet to support human life, there must be some sort of carbon-based vegetation, right?" Daniel asked Carter.
"It is no accident. Many Stargate worlds were terraformed by the Goa'ulds centuries before," Teal'C said.
"Okay. Let's take a quick look around the Gate before we move out to find SG-9," Jack said as he moved forward, Laura right behind him.
"They can't be that far," Carter said.
"I don't know. This Stargate is literally out in the middle of nowhere. I doubt it plays an active role in anybody's culture," Daniel said as he followed Jack and Laura.
It didn't take long for Laura or anyone else to start feeling dizzy from the radiation. The only one who didn't seem bothered was Teal'C as his symbiote probably protected him. Apparently Laura's Goa'uld DNA had a limit. Radiation was probably different than parasitic diseases.
"There should be a road up here or something. Jack? Guys?" Daniel called. A muffled sound caused Laura to look back to see someone grab Daniel from behind and hold a gun to his head. "All right, all right. Don't shoot," Daniel begged before Jack grabbed the mystery man and held his gun to him.
"That's very sound advice," Jack said as the man held up his hands and Jack took his gun. The man turned to look at him.
"Colonel O'Neill?" The man asked, breathing hard as if he had been running.
"Lieutenant Connor?" Laura asked as she came over to her father, Connor, and Daniel. Daniel and Jack grabbed Connor by the arms and dragged him over to a fallen log.
"All right, Connor. What's going on?" Jack asked in a no-nonsense voice after giving the man some water.
"I was with Walter in Command. Command received your signal six hours ago and no one came through. Why?" Laura asked as she sat down next to her father.
"Hanson," Connor said, shaking his head.
"Where is he? We need-" Carter started to say before Connor interrupted her sharply.
"No! Don't," Connor said.
"Why?" Jack asked.
A stunned look entered Connor's eyes. "Frakes. He-" Connor got up and ran to what looked like a pile of jungle debris and ash. When they joined him a dejected look was on Connor's face.
"Connor," Jack said as Connor picked up a pair of dirty dog tags.
"Connor, we need to know what happened," Laura said softly as she knelt next to him and touched his shoulder.
Connor turned to look at Jack. "Permission to speak freely about a superior officer, Sir" Connor said.
"Yeah, go ahead," Jack said after considering it.
"He's lost it. He's out of control," Connor said.
"Captain Hanson?" Carter asked.
"Maybe it was the sun, the radiation," Connor said.
"Are you saying the sun did this to Frakes?" Laura asked, furrowing her eyebrows.
"No, kid. Captain Hanson did that to Frakes," Connor said with tightly controlled anger.
"What?" Carter asked shocked.
"We were trying to get back through the Gate," Connor said, turning to look at Carter.
"I don't buy that," Jack said.
"Sir, we were trying to warn Command about what's really going on. The people here, they believe he's their god," Connor said.
"Because you came through the Stargate," Teal'C said.
"No, no, you don't get it. Hanson believes it too," Connor said. Jack then switched his gaze to Carter.
"Carter, I want you and my brat to take Connor back through the Stargate. Report to General Hammond what's happened," Jack said.
"No, Sir," Carter said. Jack raised his eyebrows.
"No, Sir? " Jack asked in mild surprise.
"If you're going after Captain Hanson, I should go. I can get to him," Carter said. Carter had once been engaged to Hanson and she had broken the engagement and given his ring back. If Hanson had gotten over it, Laura could see that Carter was the best possible choice to get to him.
"Look, Captain. Either we're bringing him back to face a court-martial or not. I think we both know what the "not" means," Jack said, a slight edge in his voice.
"She knows him, Dad," Laura interjected.
"Now that would be the problem, wouldn't it Laura," Jack asked.
"I gave back the ring because I know him. I know how he thinks, how he operates," Carter said with a slight steel in her own voice.
"How he likes to play God?" Laura asked skeptically.
"Look, I don't understand how that could happen anymore than you do, but if SG-1 is going after him, then I am going with you," Carter said. Connor then stood, looking more shocked than Jack.
"Wait a minute. No, you can't do that. There are hundreds, probably thousands of them. He's their god. They'll die for him. They'll kill for him in a heartbeat," Connor said.
"That's not your problem. Now I need someone to report back to the general and that is you, Carter, and my kid,." Jack said.
"No, Sir," Connor said stubbornly, repeating Carter's words.
"No, Sir?" Does it say "colonel" anywhere on my uniform?" Jack asked.
"I know the planet, the situation. I think it's suicide. But if you're goin,' I'm goin,' Sir," Connor said.
"But you are not physically able," Teal'C said.
"Frakes was my friend," Connor said.
"This isn't about revenge," Carter said.
"Maybe not for you. We gotta move now, in the daylight," Connor said as he moved away slightly.
"Well, we're off to see the Wizard," Jack said, touching the back of Laura's neck gently.
"I hope you packed lots of sun block," Connor said cryptically.
"Well, we're mostly under cover," Daniel said as he stood.
"The probe's data indicated that shade, even heavy cloud cover, won't protect us. It can be pouring rain and we'll still burn. Even my Goa'uld DNA can't protect me from severe sunburn," Laura said.
"She's right," Connor said.
Then why on Earth are we travelling during the day?" Jack asked, annoyed.
"We're not on Earth. People here live in caves. I think they used to be mines. They only come out at night, They're probably still after me, Sir," Connor said.
"To Oz," Jack snarked as he and Carter put on their sunglasses and they all followed Connor.
