Chapter 29: Old Friends United Again
And just like that, Sarah remembered everything.
It all flew by before her eyes. It was as if she were reliving every memory all at once. The night she went to kill Stefan. Meeting Rebekah – who became one of her best friends – and Klaus and Leiah, long before she would again in Mystic Falls. How she'd fooled around with Leiah while her humanity was off. Her humanity returning as Rebekah forced it back on. The horror and disgust that had followed when she realised all that she had done while her switch was off.
But then, the impossible had happened. She'd fallen in love with Leiah. She'd actually been in love with a woman, for most of a year as well. She'd had a life, with her brother, with Leiah, Rebekah and Klaus. A whole chapter in her life that had been ripped out, unbeknownst to her. A chapter which would have changed the narrative of her life.
It was like finding jigsaw piece that had been under the couch for years. Placing it into the full picture – slotting it in and seeing it fit perfectly. But while she was satisfied to see the full picture, it no longer made any sense.
Sarah could see her entire timeline stretching out before it, but there was a pivotal moment that occurred in the 1920s. She'd learnt to love the same sex, had had a same sex relationship. She'd gotten over what Katherine had done to her…and then it'd been all taken away.
She'd forgotten everything that had happened, the change that had occurred inside of her. And she'd gone back to the way she was before. Terrified of Katherine's shadow and fearing a love she couldn't understand. That had been her life up until this point. When she'd been given her memories back. And now she was even more confused. Looking back now, it was as if her life had stuttered in the 1920s, or she'd gone through an awkward gear change.
She hadn't realised, but while the memories had been playing back by inside her head, Rebekah had released her hold on her. She was still strung up by the chains in the warehouse, with the two Originals stood before her, and the coffins of their siblings set up behind them. Now Sarah remembered this moment, what had been happening before she was compelled to remember.
She'd come to Chicago, once more, searching for her brother, but for a different reason. Instead of trying to kill him, this time she was trying to rescue him. And once more, she'd been compelled by Rebekah, and everything had changed. She had no idea whether she was coming or going, her brain fried as she tried to put it all into perspective.
"Sarah?" said a voice. A voice well known to Sarah.
She looked up, seeing those blue eyes as the memories came rushing back up again. The first time they'd held hands, the first time they'd danced. Their first kiss, inside Stefan's secret room. The heart with their initials that Sarah had scratched into the wall. The first time they made love, the first time they said, 'Love.' And remembering it all in that moment, Sarah felt like she'd been cheated. That it had all been taken away from her before it should have. It hurt and that hurt was heard in her voice when she spoke.
"Leiah."
It was as if she was saying it for the first time in almost a century. As if the past few months, every time she'd said it, it had been wrong – incomplete without all the meaning behind it. But now it did have the meaning. Sarah remembered it all, everything she and Leiah had been through. The love they'd shared.
Her gaze moved over, to the other Original in the room. To the tender nervous face of her strong willed friend who'd been there for her during one of the most confusing times of her life. She remembered that too. The long nights they stayed up talking, the small things she'd done to distract her from the pain and confusion. The advice she'd given her. The bond they'd forged. She now saw what she hadn't before, when this woman had first climbed out of her coffin. Then, she'd been a stranger, but now, Sarah saw the best friend she'd forgotten about.
"Rebekah."
The same spark appeared in those blue eyes from all those years ago. A spark of hope. The hope that the two of them could become friends as close as their brothers. And they had become just that. What followed was relief, but there was still uncertainty. A fear that it might not be real, inside those blue eyes.
"You remember me now?" asked Rebekah slowly.
Sarah stared back at her, showing the same confusion Rebekah had before. How could she not remember her? How had she forgotten everything that had happened throughout that year? But then, she knew the answer to that question too. Because she remembered it all, even how it ended.
"You made me forget," stated Sarah.
"I had too," said Rebekah, reflecting Sarah's sadness. "He'd found us and–"
"Why would you do that?!" shouted Sarah as her anger suddenly came to the forefront. She'd been robbed of a life changing event, something which could have made her whole life better and it had all be snatched away because–
"I asked her too," Leiah answered in a soft voice.
And just like that, Sarah's anger vanished, instead replaced by a heartache she didn't full understand. She looked to Leiah, like a puppy that had just been kicked and the Original couldn't bare to look at her.
"Why?" whispered Sarah.
"It wasn't safe. You wouldn't have been safe," Leiah explained feebly. Then she chanced a look at Sarah, one she instantly regretted.
A look of hurt was rampant on Sarah's distraught face, and it showed her broken heart on full display. It was clear Leiah had felt heart broken at the time too, but she'd never seen Sarah's reaction to the end of their relationship. It felt just that she had to face it now. After doing the one thing she'd sworn never to do to Sarah.
"You said I'd always have a choice…" Sarah said, her tone and head dropping as a strange realisation washed over her. That in spite of everything she'd felt, every moment of love she and Leiah had shared, the inner voice of Katherine had been right. It never worked out. And Leiah had done exactly what Katherine had. She'd compelled her. It may have been indirectly, but she'd done it. And suddenly, that picture, the timeline of her life, it made sense again. Only now, she'd been with two two women who'd tricked and manipulated her.
"It wasn't like that..." Leiah began desperately, before Rebekah pulled her back.
"Leave her alone."
"But–"
"I said leave her alone, Leiah," Rebekah warned, a protective edge to her voice. Sarah remembered that voice from the memories returned to her. Sometimes Rebekah had used that very same voice on her, other times it had been like now, when she was defending her.
"You did what she said, why?" asked Sarah, lifting her heavy head to stare at Rebekah. "You never do what Leiah tells you."
"I was scared," admitted Rebekah, and Sarah knew it was the truth. She could see it in her eyes. "I didn't think I just acted. I also thought I was protecting you in that moment. It was only after the chaos that I realised I'd made the wrong choice."
"Seeing as you're wearing the same dress you were that night, I'm guessing something happened," said Sarah matter-of-factly, letting her head fall back down.
"I made another wrong choice," stated Rebekah, before she began to fill in the missing gap.
1922
It was just another night at Gloria's. It was early in the night, the bar was packed and a slow song was playing. Like most of the year so far, it had been perfect. Amongst the couples on the dance floor, Sarah held Leiah close as they swayed to the music. They'd caught a few disapproving glares but neither of them cared. They were happy. And besides, they could kill anyone arrogant enough to say something, that was if Gloria didn't kick them out first and ban them for life. She had a sweet spot for the two of them.
Nearby, Stefan and Rebekah were dancing as well, and up in their usual booth, Klaus sat with a drink in hand. Even he was in a good mood. Normally he was sour about being left out of the couples' activities. But tonight, he was content as the rest of them.
Then everything took a turn in a single moment. Sarah and Leiah had been smiling at one another, with Sarah leading them through the dance – something she'd mastered after a few lessons – when Leiah had suddenly frowned in concern. Before Sarah could ask why, the petite woman was looking around the speakeasy. Sarah began to look as well, but didn't understand until she started to listen.
There was a loud banging noise coming from near the front. A banging that turned into a crash before–
"This is the police!"
"Chicago police!"
Gunfire exploded as bullets came flying towards them. Sarah was too shocked to react but Leiah was quick enough to tackle her to the ground as the bullets flew by. Although, not all of them ended up in the walls. A few of the patrons collapsed after getting shot, screaming in pain while others just screamed out of fright. The peaceful ambience had disappeared and in its place was pure chaos as everyone ran for either cover or an escape route.
It took a moment for it all to refocus for Sarah, as she saw feet frantically stamp past while others dove to the floor hoping to avoid the bullets.
Then she looked at Leiah and gasped, seeing that she'd been hit. It wasn't a huge cause fo concern, considering she was an Original. A bullet would have a heard time killing Sarah never mind her. But as Leiah pulled the bullet from her arm, they both saw it was no ordinary bullet.
"A wooden bullet?" asked Sarah beneath the panicked screams echoing around them. "Why would they be using wooden bullets?"
Sarah almost completely forgot about her question, when she saw the frightened and terrified look on Leiah's face. She'd never seen her with a look like that since she'd known her. It was one of pure terror, something she'd never have expected an Original to have.
"Leiah, what is it?" asked Sarah, her own fear mirroring Leiah's as she took her girlfriend's hand.
Leiah tired to give her a reassuring smile, but Sarah saw right through it. "It's going to be all right," Leiah lied, as she took Sarah's face in her hands. "I promise, I won't let him hurt you."
"Who?" asked Sarah, but her question was once again abandoned as Leiah grabbed her hand. She sped them across the room and behind the bar where Stefan and Rebekah were already taking cover. The rain of wooden bullets was still coming none stop, and a few more of the patrons had been killed, Sarah could smell the blood in the air.
It didn't make any sense though. Gloria's had never once been raided. Part of that was because a number of the higher ups at the police department came to this very speakeasy to drink. Gloria paid them fairly for their discretion and gave them a more than generous discount to assure her establishment's protection. And with these officers dropping more bodies than Stefan had of late, it didn't add up.
"I'm going to go and get Klaus," said Stefan as he risked a look over the bar.
"Stefan, don't he'll be fine!" insisted Rebekah.
"We'll all be fine, once we're together," said Stefan, before kissing Rebekah on the forehead. "I'll be right back." Rebekah tried to stop him, but Stefan had already jumped the bar and was running across the room in a blur to get to Klaus.
However, Rebekah's frightened eyes were quickly drawn away from her love, when Leiah grabbed her by the arm. "Rebekah, I need you to help me protect Sarah."
"She can look after herself!" Rebekah snapped back, her priorities showing. While they were best friends, Stefan was her true love, and the one of the two in current danger. If she was going to try her best to protect anyone, it was going to be him.
Sarah wasn't hurt by this. In fact, she'd come to expect this from Rebekah. And in truth, she was glad her brother had someone has stubborn as Rebekah looking out for him, especially when Sarah had been after him.
"Not from him," Leiah replied, and Rebekah stopped trying to look over the counter. From the look they were sharing, Sarah could see they fully understood each other.
"I can't let it happen again," said Leiah, as the terror Sarah had seen before now appeared in her voice. Her firm, yet very frightened, voice. "Please, Rebekah, you know I can't do it, I promised. But you can save her."
Rebekah's gaze flipped to Sarah, who had no idea what was going on. But she could see the sorrow in Rebekah's eyes at the thought of whatever it was Leiah was asking her to do.
"She's your friend too, and you know it's the only way she'll be safe."
"What are you both talking about, we have to get Stefan and Klaus and get out of here!" Sarah shouted, as another round of wooden bullets shot by over head, shattering the few remaining unbroken bottles on the counter.
"Please!" Leiah begged, and Sarah could hear her crying. "Please, Rebekah."
"How much do I take?" Rebekah asked quietly, having apparently conceded to whatever her sister was asking of her.
"All of it," sobbed Leiah. "She can't remember any of it."
"Remember what? Would one of you please tell me…" Sarah trailed off as Rebekah crawled past Leiah and lay her hand on Sarah's shoulder. The action confused her, until she looked into Rebekah's eyes.
She hadn't had vervain in months, she'd never needed to take it. Leiah had promised to never compel her again and she was no longer afraid. Which was why she was caught off guard when Rebekah's eyes began to pull her in.
"I'm sorry, Sarah. You have no idea how sorry, but I truly am. But you must forget all this. You'll forget everything from this past year. You will forget me, Leiah, Klaus, all of it. You never met us. Our faces will be erased from your memories. If anyone asks about us, you will know nothing. You will be safe…. And you will sleep…once Leiah kisses you goodbye. Goodbye, Sarah."
Rebekah pulled away, tears in her eyes which she wiped away as Leiah took her place. But were Rebekah had been shedding tears, they were pouring out of Leiah. "I didn't want it to end this way… I never wanted it to end. But at least this way, I'll know your safe. Goodbye, Sarah…"
Leiah then leaned forward, giving Sarah one final kiss. She put her whole heart into it, making every second count as Sarah held on to her. She didn't want it to end, she didn't want to forget, Leiah could sense it. But she had to forget. For her own protection. So Leiah pulled her lips back. And when Sarah tried to follow, to steal one last kiss…she fell asleep against Leiah's shoulder.
"I love you," Leiah whispered into her ear, before she lay Sarah down. She knew she'd be safe. He wouldn't take notice of her down here. And even if he found out she was a vampire, he wouldn't care. He was after them, and he wouldn't waste time on one lonely vampire if it meant he might lose his prize.
"Come on, Leiah, we have to go, now," hissed Rebekah, as she grabbed her sister's arm and pulled.
But now Leiah didn't want to go. She didn't want to leave Sarah behind. And yet she allowed her sister to pull her away, to shove her around the bar and push as Leiah cried.
It hurt. It hurt like it did so many times before, but it had been worth it. And if it was meant to be, they'd get their second chance. Unfortunately, none of that helped the pain she was experience right now, or the tears she couldn't stop crying.
She caught one last glance of Sarah's still form behind the counter, and then she vanished from sight.
"Rebekah! Leiah! Come on, we've got to go, sweethearts!" shouted Klaus, who was standing by the side of the stage with Stefan across the room. Rebekah was dragging Leiah over to them, pushing her in front of her and ducking on occasion to avoid the bullets still coming. Leiah started trying to get back to Sarah, but Rebekah kept pushing her on, no matter what she said or did. Whether it was saying she'd changed her mind, or if she was trying to shove her sister aside, Rebekah kept her ahead of her and moving. At one point, while Leiah was clawing at her neck, trying to get her out of her way, Rebekah felt her sister's hand catch on something before it suddenly broke away. She had no time to think about it, as Klaus grabbed Leiah and yanked her away.
"What's wrong with her?!" shouted Klaus, holding Leiah as she cried and thrashed.
"She just said goodbye to Sarah," said Rebekah, rubbing at her neck where Leiah had scratched her.
"Bloody hell, just what we need," grumbled Klaus. "Get her to the warehouse, we'll join you in a sec."
"But–"
"Go!" Klaus ordered. Rebekah hesitated, before then taking her little sister from Klaus and running out the escape route Gloria had shown them. It was for privileged clients only, and personal friends. It lead through into the next building and then out into an alley that was unguarded by the cops. Outside, Rebekah saw other fortunate patrons escape and flee unnoticed. She, herself, was going to have a harder time doing that with Leiah still crying. So she ran at vampire speed, staying in the shadows so that those who saw them would only catch a glimpse and play it off as a trick of the light.
She got them far away from Gloria's and then let her sister cry it all out as she held her. She needed to get it out and needed Rebekah to assure her she'd done the right thing. She was hurting herself, having just lost her best friend, but right now she was more worried about Stefan and what he might do to him he found him. Her only reassurance was that their brother was with him and Nik would never let anything happen to Stefan. He loved him like a brother.
So she tolerated Leiah's heartache, until she was sober enough to head to the warehouse. They'd agreed long ago when they settled down in Chicago that they needed an escape plan, unless they wanted a repeat of what happened last time. So they'd agreed that if he ever appeared and they got separated, then they'd meet at a warehouse on the edge of the city, where Klaus stored their siblings.
A few hours later, Rebekah and Leiah arrived, having been sure not to be followed. Klaus had been in the middle of loading up the coffins when they arrived, but when he paused to ask how they were doing Leiah had broken down again. Being the semi good brother he was, he consoled her for a few minutes before he deemed her fit enough to be left on her own as he resumed moving the coffins. Unfortunately, that had been when Rebekah noticed Stefan's absence.
"Where is he, Nik?"
"We got separated," Klaus said, as he loaded up the last coffin and sealed the hatch on the back of the truck.
"But he knows we're to meet here, doesn't he?" pressed Rebekah.
Klaus looked at her, and she knew his answer. But even so, she stood her ground stubbornly, looking at the door as if Stefan would suddenly burst through and pick her up off her feet and kiss her. And Leiah knew this because she was hoping for it herself. She was also hoping, that like their own brother, Stefan would never leave his sister behind, and that when he came through that door Sarah would be right behind him.
"Come on, let's go," Klaus said to both his sisters, as he opened up the door to truck.
"He'll be here any second," Rebekah said to herself, still not moving.
Klaus sighed, as he made his way over to Rebekah. "Do you want to die? We've bene found. We need to move."
"Not without Stefan," stated Rebekah, as she turned to face her brother.
"Stefan's not coming," said Klaus regrettably, as confusion flashed across Rebekah's face. But Leiah knew what he'd done. The same thing she'd had Rebekah do. "We have to disappear. He'll draw too much attention, let him go."
"What did you do?" asked Rebekah, fearing the answer as fresh tears formed. Now, she'd not only lost her best friend, but another true love.
"Come on," declared Klaus as he grabbed her arm. "I've already got Leiah to deal with, I don't need you throwing a tantrum as well." But before he could take a single step, Rebekah shook him off.
"I don't want to run anymore, Nik! All we do is run!" The exhaustion, both physical and emotional was clear as Rebekah stared back at her brother. Leiah understood it. They'd been running their entire lives, and their family had only gotten smaller and smaller. But if they didn't run, then they'd end up like the rest. Leiah thought her sister knew that, now it seemed otherwise.
"I want to be with Stefan," declared Rebekah.
"Fine," said Klaus lowly. "Then choose, him or me."
Rebekah held his gaze for a moment. Then her eyes shut, keeping the tears back as Klaus turned away.
"That's what I thought. Both of you, get in the truck, now," ordered Klaus, already stood at the driver's side door.
"Goodbye, Nik," Rebekah said, and Klaus froze.
Leiah stared at her sister with wide shocked eyes. She truly had forgotten what happened to the others. But more than that, she'd forgotten the promise. Always and Forever.
It was as Rebekah turned to leave, Leiah saw her brother move. She closed her eyes to avoid seeing it. She'd lost enough already today. She'd lost a friend, she'd lost love. And now, she was losing her sister.
She heard the impact of the dagger, the groaning and gasping as Rebekah's body was put into a state of death. When she opened her eyes to look, Rebekah was on the ground, her skin grey and body lifeless, her heart having stopped – for as long as that dagger remained in it.
She looked up from the body of her sister, and saw that her brother held in his hand, another dagger. The one meant for her.
"Are you going to make the same choice?" asked Klaus shakily, aiming the dagger at her. "Or are you going to let go of that girl and stay with me?"
In that moment, she knew her options for what they were. Go to sleep or stay awake. And honestly, going to sleep didn't sound like the worst idea. But Leiah also knew, that once that dagger went in, there was no guarantee of when it'd come back out. And if she went, Klaus would be all on his own. That didn't bode well for anyone, even their family. One of them needed to stay awake, to stay with him. Not only for his sanity, but to give the others a chance at being woken up.
Her heart was aching. Klaus didn't like it. So she shoved it down, forced what she was feeling to the back of her mind. She would mourn more later. Now, family was all that mattered.
"I'm with you, Nik," swore Leiah. "Always and forever."
"Always and forever," agreed Klaus.
"And you've been asleep ever since," muttered Sarah, after having heard Rebekah's story.
"Until now," agreed Rebekah.
"Forgive me if I don't feel sorry for you, either of you," Sarah said with a spiteful look to Leiah, who hid herself in embarrassment.
"I don't need your forgiveness, I need your friendship," stated Rebekah, stepping towards Sarah and shielding her sister from sight.
"Well, you lost it when you took away my memories."
"I gave you those back," argued Rebekah, as if that should somehow fix everything.
"Too little, too late," Sarah snapped back, before Rebekah grabbed her by the jaw.
"I could compel you," snarled Rebekah. "Make you be my friend again."
"Go ahead," muttered Sarah, her words squished like her jaw in Rebekah's hold. "Why change now?"
She couldn't fight it, and to be frank Sarah didn't have the strength or the heart to. Her world had been turned upside down, and yet, nothing had changed. She was only now more miserable than she was before, and with all of it weighing down her, she just didn't have the strength to try and fight Rebekah. So she looked the Original in the eye, ready to embrace whatever came next.
But the compulsion never came. She never felt the mental pull and in the end, Rebekah let her go. Even went as far as to undo the chains holding her up, allowing her to collapse onto her knees as the chains clattered along the floor.
"No. I want my friend, not some compelled servant."
"Then you'll be waiting a while," grumbled Sarah as she rubbed her chain free wrists.
"I know," said Rebekah. "But really, it's Leiah you should be mad at."
"I am," Sarah assured her, with a sideways glance at Leiah who closed her eyes. Once again hiding from her ex.
"Thank, Bex," muttered Leiah.
"What? You are the one who wanted me to compel her, after all."
"My thoughts exactly," agreed Sarah.
Finally Leiah looked towards Sarah. She hesitated, then finally started to speak. "Look, Sarah. I'm sorry that I had her compel you and I can't imagine how violated you feel after I broke your trust. But I had to, otherwise–" She was cut off by the banging of a door somewhere in the warehouse.
"He couldn't have picked a worse time," growled Leiah, her fists clenching as footsteps echoed from along the warehouse. Sarah turned, trying to see who it was in between the rows of shelving units.
Then, sensing movement, Sarah turned, finding that Rebekah had disappeared and that Leiah was the only one stood with her. If she'd had it her way, it would have been Leiah who disappeared. She could at least stand to look at Rebekah, where as Leiah, the second they locked eyes, both looked away.
The intruder then rounded the corner at the end of the warehouse, and Sarah looked over to see that it was Klaus who'd joined them. He froze upon seeing Sarah, down on her knees before Leiah. Both staring back at him.
"What's she doing here?" demanded Klaus.
"Remembering," stated Leiah.
"I take it that means, Rebekah's up and about. You were supposed to bring her to Gloria's."
"She only just woke up."
"Excellent. So, where is she then?" asked Klaus, as he made his way around Sarah and towards his little sister.
"She ran off when you came in. I can't imagine why."
Klaus shot Leiah a glare, but then began looking for his other sister. "Rebekah! It's your big brother. Come out, come out, wherever you are." He then leaned in towards Leiah, lowering his voice as he said, "How bad a mood is she in?"
Leiah didn't need to answer, as the next second Rebekah came running back into view. She charged straight into Klaus at supernatural speed, grabbing him by the shoulder and thrusting the dagger that had once been in her heart into his. "Go to hell, Nik!" she snarled, as she shoved him back against the shelving unit. Klaus clamped down, refusing to even groan as he swallowed his pain.
When his eyes then opened, Sarah saw the anger in them, the annoyance. But he was trying to keep it down, to not let it out. It wasn't something she remembered him doing a lot. Whenever he'd been mad or angry in the 1920s, he'd expressed it. Although, logically, Sarah doubted he'd finally awoken Rebekah just to have a shouting match with her.
Rebekah gave another twist of the dagger, but still Klaus didn't react, didn't groan or snarl. He merely closed his eyes and bit down. Seeing she wasn't getting what she wanted, Rebekah gave him one last shove, before backing off.
"She's pretty pissed," Leiah answered, stood with an expression that said she'd see this all before.
"Yes…thank you, Leiah," groaned Klaus, at last showing some pain as he pulled the dagger from his chest. He then looked to Rebekah, who was coldly staring back at him. "Oh, don't pout. You knew it wouldn't kill me."
"No, but I was hoping it would hurt more," said Rebekah, turning on her brother and towards Sarah, who was still on her knees. "Oh for God sake, get up," she said with little care for what Sarah was going through. That didn't surprise Sarah, that was how Rebekah normally was. What did surprise her was the hand Rebekah offered her.
She stared at it for a moment, before looking up to Rebekah and seeing that same spark of hope she'd seen before. The hope that they could be friends, again. And while Sarah was mad, frustrated, confused and heartbroken, she wanted a friend too. She needed one right now, and none of the usual suspects where around. Lexi was dead and she couldn't call home and risk dragging them in and having Klaus learn about Elena. So…Rebekah might be all she had. And she knew what rejection would mean. She was all alone at the moment, she needed someone in her corner. So she took Rebekah's hand, and stood up.
"I understand that you're upset with me, Rebekah," said Klaus. Rebekah didn't even look at him, which they all knew he wouldn't like. But nevertheless, they were all listening and he was aware of that. "So, I'm going to let what you just did go, and the fact that your ignoring me and showing this tart more…" He stopped, sensing he was saying the wrong thing. It was another surprise, since Sarah rarely remembered him holding punches against her, verbal or otherwise.
But right now she was in a privileged position, as she was realising. Both Rebekah and Leiah were giving her more attention than Klaus. Rebekah, by what she'd just done, and Leiah because she'd been stood beside Sarah and watching her this whole time. Previously Klaus would have gotten mad about it and started a fight. But he was on thin ice with Rebekah and was trying to please her for the moment. Sarah hoped that meant she was safe, but she'd still have to tread carefully. Push Klaus too far, and he'd probably kill her just to rile up his sisters.
Klaus sighed, recomposing himself before continuing. "I'm going to let it go, just this once. I'll let…Sarah, live. She can stay or leave, it's your choice." Sarah didn't miss that it wasn't her choice but rather Rebekah's. Not even Leiah had been awarded that right, so he really was kissing his sister's ass. Obviously he wanted her for something, Sarah just needed to find out what. Then maybe she could use it as a bargaining chip for getting her and Stefan out of this mess.
"And…I brought you something else too," Klaus added, before looking down to the other end of the warehouse. The three women turned to look as well, and Sarah's eyes widened when she saw her brother stood ahead of her. Impulse took over and she ran over to him, throwing her arms around him and holding him close as he hugged her back.
It had been too long. In the grand scheme of things, it might only have been a few months, and while they had spent years apart before, but it had still been far too long. Finally after so long, she had her brother back. She had her family back. Maybe they weren't all together, but holding him, it made the dream feel real again.
"Sarah…Sarah, what are you doing here?" Stefan asked as they parted.
"She came looking for you, like she always does," answered Leiah, but neither Salvatore acknowledged her.
"You're not hurt are you?" continued Stefan.
"Not physically," replied Sarah, at which Stefan frowned. She jumped over the obvious follow up by asking, "You?"
"Yeah…I'm–I'm good."
"Stefan?"
Sarah looked back over her shoulder, seeing Rebekah with yet another hopeful look in her blue eyes. This time, it was the look of a high school girl in love – or at least that was what Sarah had come to see it as. With her knowledge of pop culture romance movies and her life in general, her new memories of the past came with a new perspective also. It was starting to give her a head and she was doing her best to shove it all down right now, to not think about it. But then she saw Leiah, staring at her and it all came back again. Because they'd been two couples together. While Rebekah had been madly in love with Stefan, Sarah had been madly in love with Leiah. But were as time had passed for everyone else, Rebekah had woken up as if all that was yesterday. While herself and Leiah no longer looked at each other the same way as they did back then, Rebekah still looked at Stefan the same way she had back then. Hopelessly in love.
Probably was, Stefan didn't remember any of this. Sarah could see it on his face, as he stared at Rebekah. He had no idea who she was or what she'd once meant to him. Meaning he'd been compelled to forget too.
She was suddenly shoved aside, stumbling into a shelving unit to find Klaus had taken her place before Stefan. Rebekah was still mesmerised by the sight of Stefan, so Leiah was the one to speed over and help steady her. Sarah's instinct was to shove her off, but then she looked at Leiah's face and something clicked in the back of her mind, as memories of better times came to the forefront.
So, instead she got her feet underneath her, and silently thanked Leiah, who let her go the second she was able to stand on her own. She was still heartbroken by what Leiah had had Rebekah do to. But at the same time, she'd never had a chance to get over Leiah. She still…loved her in some way. She'd only forgotten that she had and now those memories were suddenly back. They both stopped suddenly in the past, and reappeared again now. It was messing with her head, to the point of a migraine. And now Klaus was ripping the same bandaid off of Stefan.
"Now, you remember," Klaus compelled.
For a moment, Stefan stood, dazed as if watching something. Sarah knew what he was experiencing first hand. She'd just gone through it herself. He was seeing everything he'd forgotten played back before him like the world's fasted movie. But he was taking it all in, remembering as he relived times forgotten.
He came back, staring at Rebekah as she smiled shyly back. He now recognised her. "Rebekah," he said quietly. The corners of his mouth turning up as he remembered it all, everything he'd had with her. Rebekah was more expressive, as she beamed back at him. But her high didn't last long, as Stefan then turned towards Klaus, staring at him as if trying to place him. And then he did.
"I…remember you. We were friends." A glance towards Sarah and Leiah, the memories playing back before his eyes. "All of us were."
"We still are," said Leiah, before beginning to smile. "And now, we're together again…" She trialed off, her enthusiasm dropping as she caught Sarah's sideways glare. Because things were not as they had been back then. Despite what she might want, they were not picking up were they had left off. Things were different now, in so many ways. Just because Rebekah had been asleep this whole time, didn't mean they all had. No matter how much they all might want it in some small way, things could never be like they were back then.
"Yes, well, we can celebrate all that later," said Klaus, looking rather pleased with himself as he patted Stefan fondly on the shoulder. "But first, I need a word with you," he said to Rebekah, striding over to her. "Gloria tells me you know how to contact the Original Witch."
"The Original Witch?" scoffed Rebekah.
"What do you have that Gloria needs?" pressed Klaus impatiently.
Rebekah rolled her eyes, before reaching for her neck. But whatever she reached for, it wasn't there, as she sharply looked down in shock. "Where's my necklace? What did you do with it? I never take it off." The panicked blue eyes turned frantic as they shot over towards Leiah. "You! You took it didn't you!"
"Why would I take your necklace?" snapped Leiah defensively.
"You've always been jealous, you and Amelia. Always jealous that she gave it to me and not you!" shouted Rebekah, going to charge at her sister when Klaus grabbed her by the shoulders and pushed her back in front of him.
"I never touched your bloody necklace!" Leiah shouted back over Rebekah's ranting.
"Tell me that's not what she needs, Rebekah?" said Klaus, his anger boiling up again.
"Find it now, Nik! I want it back!" shouted Rebekah as she shoved her brother away.
Klaus then wheeled around towards Leiah, pointing an accusing finger. "Did you take it?"
"Would you stop accusing me! No, I didn't take it, it must be her coffin!" Leiah shouted back, as the three Originals moved over to the coffins. Rebekah got there first and began pulling everything out. The padding, the inner lining. She pulled out everything she could before then slamming the lid and flipping the coffin over as she screamed.
What then followed was all three Originals shouting at one another. Rebekah was shouting at Leiah for stealing her necklace and demanding Klaus find it at once. Leiah was shouting at Rebekah because she didn't steal the necklace and was yelling at Klaus for taking Rebekah's side over hers. Klaus was shouting at them both for not doing what he wanted and for losing the necklace which he blamed them both for.
Ironically, had they looked over to where Sarah and Stefan were stood, they would have possibly figured out the answer. Because at that very moment, Sarah remembered that necklace, the necklace Rebekah had always worn. It was small and insignificant, so she'd never paid it much attention or even asked about it – which she now realised may have been a mistake. But she remembered someone else wearing that necklace too. Elena.
Stefan had given it to her, that very same necklace. And like Rebekah, Elena wore it every day because it contained her vervain supply. The Originals wanted to know where the necklace was, and the Salvatores knew. But telling them would lead them straight to Elena, who was still very much alive.
Sarah looked over to Stefan, seeing her concern matched in his expression. He'd known it from the second the necklace was brought up that it was the same one Elena had. After all, he'd been the one who had it the entire time Rebekah was in the coffin, blissfully unaware that her ex had her most prised possession. Now he was panicking, just like Sarah, because if Klaus found out he'd been played, no good will from his sisters would save them or their friends.
