Prompt: Feeling For Each Other In The Dark (Nalu)
It was a unnatural shadow that cast it's darkness over the cavern, one born of magic that ate away others abilities to keep them blind and lost in maze like corridors. This job was a tough one and Lucy groaned from the chilled floor, sore and weary from exertion. Her magic wasn't working. Not properly, but she still felt it beneath her skin. The gentle heat of her keys gave her the motivation she needed. She wasn't beaten yet.
"Natsu?" She asked, staring into the darkness, desperately trying to see some shape or form. He'd been by her before the floor had dropped beneath them. He should still be nearby. "Natsu, are you there?"
He was unconscious was he? What if he struck his head. What if he'd used too much magic and was too weak to move? He had a nasty habit of over doing it, could that be the case now? A frantic worry began to boil in her stomach, but a low groan from her right canceled out her shouting his name again.
"- feel like, I'm gonna... hurl... What was moving?" The nauseated voice filled Lucy with relief, amused despite herself.
"We fell through a hole." She explained, clearing her throat to talk louder. "It wasn't a vehicle."
"Tell that to my stomach."
"I would if I could see it."
He chuckled and ruffled movements of clothes and sandals scraping the ground told Lucy all she needed to know. He was moving. Good. "Weirdo, why didn't you say so earlier? Give me a second." A second was all he needed for the familiar heat of his flames to wash over her, close by, yet not seen. The magic seared and crackled through the air.
Then it was gone. Fizzling out like a wet match. Natsu growled. "What the? This damn place is sucking up my fire! That's cheating!"
Feeling around the ground, Lucy began to search for him. Ignoring his complaints as she crawled across the floor blindly trying to discern just how close to her he truly was. This darkness was absolute. Too strong. Too deep. Whatever trap or magic had caused it was too well made. She couldn't even begin to figure it out. Not without light. Not without a way out.
"It wont let me use my keys either." She muttered, flinching when her finger smacked against a jagged rock. "Ow, ow, can you please try and find me instead of whining like a baby?!"
"That's what I'm doing!" He snapped back, and it must have been true, he sounded closer than before. "I can smell you at least so don't freak out too much. In fact, hold still and let me find you."
Lucy scoffed, hand outstretched as she shuffled along, "As if, I'm not staying in one place! It's too cold for that!"
Calloused fingers grabbed her own and Lucy paused, letting out a whoosh of air she'd been holding. Perhaps, she had been a little more panicked than she cared to admit, but she knew those fingers. Knew them well as they threaded with her own, tugging her close so the heat of Natsu's body settled into her bones. She sighed, relieved and feeling more secure by the second.
"Gotcha." He celebrated, voice a low growl that echoed across the walls and into her ear. She shivered, not from the cold, but too concerned too think on it. "Now let's get out of here."
"And how do you suppose we do that?" She asked. It wasn't meant to be biting, and she squeezed his hand tight for reassurance.
"No clue!" Natsu chortled, and the familiar sizzle of magic sparked in his hand. Not enough to create a fire, but Lucy's eyes widened in amazement when she realized her own magic was answering the call. "But we'll figure it out, cause we're awesome, right?"
"Right. Awesome..." So confident, he appeared, but it was difficult to doubt him. So she didn't. The spark of magic she felt as still there, like a tiny moth fluttering just out of reach. Unlike the previous times, Lucy felt no outside force drawing it away. Maybe they really could do this.
"Hey, Natsu," Lucy inched closer to him and moved to stand, a plan already formulating in her mind. It was rare Hard to achieve. So very difficult, but she had managed it with Juvia before, why not Natsu? "How about you fire it up just a little bit more?"
"Eh? But wouldn't that burn you-"
Fingers focusing on the magic she felt between them, Lucy let it flow and the keys on her hip emitted a glow in answer. It was dim, but the darkness failed to put it out. Natsu paused in his words and with an excited laugh, he did as she asked, the magic of his flames lit between their fingers and sparks like stars glittered between them.
"Hell yeah! Let's kick this places ass!" Another burst of magic and the light roared to life, followed by Lucy's laughter.
"I don't think it has an ass!" She said, tears of relief prickling her eyes, "but lets go find the others!"
Not a doubt at all. They would be okay, because they were together.
