Stepping into the line of fire

Chapter 29

John assembled his troop in a circle. This seemed a little ironic as that was the point of the brief. Nobody said anything though because he had that look on his face that allowed no dissension.

"Now. Let's do the SMEAC."

The boys cringed. Dad was going to go full marine mode on this one!

"The situation we have here is that we are dealing with a rogue Balrog."

Angela interrupted at this point and quipped "that rhyme's sir!" Dean gave her a little shove and waited for the fall out!

John took no notice and continued his briefing…

"That Balrog, Ugoliant, is very powerful and determined to survive in this world. He belongs to middle earth but he's not got the power to get himself back there at the moment. At present he's killing civilians who stumble across him and he's got the potential of attracting other demonic entities. This demon…because that's what we are dealing with… make no mistake…projects power and terror. It can alter its body structure and can even survive in water. This is a tough son of a bitch!"

John took a breath at this point and resumed his rundown.

"We're dealing with a demonic creature of huge power but it, like all creatures, has a weak spot…We need to find that weak spot. Our most likely course of action is to follow the lead that Angela gave us. We know where it is hiding. That is crucial to our plan. The most dangerous thing it could do is to out manoeuvre us. We've got to be ready for that…Is everybody listening?"

"Yes sir. Yes John." They all chorused.

"Now let's move on to the mission itself. We know who he is, what he can do, where he might be. Now we need to agree on when we make a move, why we should and whether it's in our best interest to do so. The execution of our plan is crucial. We need to zap that son of a bitch into oblivion. I suggest that we trap it, we've discussed this and it's probably our best course of action. That is, I personally believe, going to be the most important move we can make. When we have it trapped in our stone circle we kill it. Trapping it is everything. Dean you are the bait."

Dean nodded. He had already volunteered. Angela shuddered but understood that in situations such as these you had to have a plan and there could be casualties. She prayed that it wouldn't be her sweetie though… They were all at risk. John powered on…

"We have our ammunition and weapons sorted. We have an advantage in that he doesn't know who we are and what we do. We know the lore and we have Ange's blood. I believe that is our most powerful asset. We also have your psychic powers which might give us an edge gal!" John looked pointedly at Angela and she solemnly looked back at her commanding officer.

"Now… we all need to know what we're doing. We need to be fully aware of our own individual part in this hunt. We're all vital in the success of this mission."

Dean and Sam looked proudly at their father. The ol' man was great when he was in full command mode! Bobby looked impressed too.

"Dean ya' know you're the bait. You'll have Nasil dipped in the sacred blood and we want you to weaken it. Angela your role is to concentrate psychically and look after first aid. Sam you read the incantations when we trap it. Bobby and I will cover ya' all. The holy water is our back up. All clear?"

"Yes sir!" the hunters dutifully responded. John had them in the palm of his hand and they were all fired up ready to go and destroy that demonic monstrosity.

"When do we leave sir?" Dean questioned eagerly.

"As soon as the gear is sorted boy. Let's get to it!"

The hunters went about their allocated chores with gusto. They were all so very keen to get the job done. They were going to annihilate Ugoliant and deny him all claims to immortality. He was a dead balrog!
