"Guys, guys, guys!" Tooth came barreling in. She smiled, "You'll ever guess what I just saw in my last house during runs"
Nick smiled, "What did you see, Toothy?"
"A baby!" Tooth squealed, "He was so cute, and he was just getting his baby teeth in!" Tooth's wings fluttered with excitement before sitting back down.
Jack just smiled. He would never understand the excitement revolving around a baby. The only kids he ever played with could already walk and talk, well, save for Sophie. As a matter of fact, Jack didn't really know anything about babies. There was never a need. All of the other Guardians jobs focused on kids of all ages, but Jack couldn't really have a snowball fight with a 2 year old. So, whenever the Guardians gushed about babies, Jack just smiled and listened.
As he tuned back into the conversation, Tooth looked over at him, "Jack, he was so precious. I think you would have so much fun playing with him"
"Really? I didn't think babies could play" Jack shrugged, "At least the way I play"
"Sure they can play, mate" Bunny started. "Give them a little plush to shake, a dummy to suck on and make some silly faces and they'll be happy for hours"
"I guess I just wouldn't really know what to do. I mean, the youngest kid I've played with is Sophie"
"I thought you brought fun to all kids" North questioned.
"I do" Jack stood up, "I just don't really hang out around babies as much. I honestly don't really know anything about them"
Sandy made an image of a spoon and a baby's face, "Yes, I know what they eat" Jack smiled, rolling his eyes.
An image of a rattler, "Well, now I know they can play"
And just for fun, an image of a bird and a bee.
"I don't get it"
North and Bunny chuckled as Tooth rolled her eyes at Sandy's immaturity.
"The birds and the bees, Jack" Tooth answered
"What about birds and bees?" Jack gave a confused look. Bunny raised an eyebrow, "Ya know? The birds and the bees? Procreation? The facts of life?"
Jack just pursed his lips and shook his head.
"Seriously?" Bunny sighed, "Now you're just pullin' our legs"
"It is the saying for how babies are made" North chimed in.
"Oh" Jack's eyes widened, "Yeah, totally. Yeah, I know how babies are made?" Jack hesitated.
"Was that a question?" Bunny teased.
"You are just joking around, yes?" North asked
Jack looked off to the side before nodding, not looking any of the Guardians in the eye "Yeah, yeah. I know"
An awkward silence soon followed as the four Guardians looked at each other.
Of course they knew Jack was young, the boy was forever 14. But even 14 year old's should know how babies are made.
It could just be that Jack was joking around, but that kind of joke wasn't really Jack's style. If he really was telling the truth, then it was now up to the Guardians to make sure Jack knew. And they all seemed to realize this at the same time.
Tooth seemed to become more and more agitated the more she thought about it. It was a parents job to make sure their child grows up educated and informed about these kinds of things, and if Jack was denied this information about life, that means his parents failed to teach him. And this just led to even more questions.
What else had his parents failed to teach him? Were they planning on telling him, but didn't get the chance? Jack had said he grew up in a time period long ago, so maybe the idea of telling children how babies were made was taboo back then?
"Jack, what time period did you grow up in again?" Tooth asked
"Uh, like the 1700's I think?" He answered.
That explained it.
"Jack, you really don't know how babies are made?" Bunny asked, hopping forward slightly.
"I mean, I can guess. I know it takes a mom and a dad, and I know how pregnancy works" Jack spoke softly, feeling embarrassed for no reason.
"No need to be shy, if you would like to know, we will tell you" North smiled.
It was no secret that North felt like he had fit perfectly into the father role where Jack was concerned, and as such, North would gladly take on any hardships or issues Jack had missed during his short childhood as a mortal.
"You really don't have to." Jack stammered, "I mean, it's not like I have to know"
Tooth cringed, "Well, it is a piece of information that everybody should know, mortal or not"
Sandy stepped forward with a raised eyebrow, an image of a face looking side to side really fast with drops of sweat dripping down their cheeks.
"No, no, I'm not nervous" Jack denied, unbelievably.
"Mate, you said you grew up in the 1700's." Bunny started, "I know for a fact that children during that time weren't taught as much as kids are taught today. The fact that you even know anything about pregnancy is impressive" Bunny tried to reason.
Sure, the kid needed to know this stuff, but it wasn't his fault that he didn't. Jack had grown up during a really conservative time, and sex was something no one talked about openly. Let alone to children.
Jack sighed, "It just...feels wrong."
The Guardians didn't say anything, sensing Jack still had something to say.
"I do remember asking a few times, and every time I was told I didn't need to worry about it, and if I really needed to know that I'd find out when the time was right."
North stepped forward and patted Jack on the back, "Well, my boy, the time is right" he chuckled.
Jack slightly blushed before allowing himself to be led back to his chair.
And if the Guardians noticed that Jack avoided the Workshop a few days later, they didn't say a word.
